Born in 1897 at Hyderabad, Dr Zakir Husain was the third President of India from May 13, 1967 until his death. Hussain was born in Hyderabad, India, where his father had migrated from Uttar Pradesh. He went for higher education to Anglo-Muhammadan Oriental College (now Aligarh Muslim University). He was known even in those days for his love of knowledge, his wit and eloquence and his readiness to help his fellow students. Zakir Husain, then only 23 and a student of the M.A. , was among the small group of students and teachers who decided to establish a National Muslim University and named it Jamia Millia Islamia. Zakir Husain's unceasing quest for knowledge also took him to Germany in the 1920's. During his three year stay there, he acquired a deep love for European art and literature on music and he also got a Doctorate from the University of Berlin in Economics. In 1963, he was awarded the highest honour of the land, the Bharat Ratna for his great service to the nation. After serving as the Governor of Bihar from 1957 to 1962, and as the Vice President of India for a term of five years, from 1962 to 1967, Dr. Zakir Husain was elected President of India on May 13, 1967. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan is best known as the man who introduced the thinking of western idealist philosophers into Indian thought. He was an Oxford don who became the first Vice President and the second President of India. He was born at Tiruttani, 64 km to the northeast of Madras in South India. His mother tongue was Telugu. His early years were spent in Tiruttani, Tiruvallur and Tirupati. His primary education was in Gowdie School, Tiruvallur. He graduated with a Master's Degree in Arts from Madras University. In 1921, he was appointed to the most important philosophy chair in India, King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science in the University of Calcutta. Radhakrishnan represented the University of Calcutta at the Congress of the Universities of the British Empire in June 1926 and the International Congress of Philosophy at Harvard University in September 1926. In 1929, Radhakrishnan was invited to take the post vacated by Principal J. Estin Carpenter in Manchester College, Oxford. This gave him the opportunity to lecture to the students of the University of Oxford on Comparative Religion. He was knighted in 1931 and was known as Sir Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first President of India. Rajendra Prasad was a great freedom-fighter, and the architect of the Indian Constitution, having served as President of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Constitution of the Republic from 1948 to 1950. He had also served as a Cabinet Minister briefly in the first Government of Independent India. He was a crucial leader of the Indian Independence Movement. Prasad was born in Jiradei, in the Siwan district of Bihar. His father, Mahadev Sahay, was a Persian and Sanskrit language scholar; his mother, Kamleshwari Devi, was a devout lady who would tell stories from the Ramayana to her son. At the age of 5, the young Rajendra Prasad was sent to a Maulavi for learning Persian. After that he was sent to Chapra Zilla School for further primary studies.
After India became independent he was elected the President of India. As President, he used his moderating influence so silently and unobtrusively that he neither reigned nor ruled. His sister Bhagwati Devi died on the night of 25 January 1960. She doted on her dearly-loved younger brother. It must have taken Rajendra Prasad all his will power to have taken the Republic Day salute as usual, on the following day. It was only on return from the parade that he set about the task of cremation. In 1962, after 12 years as President, he announced his decision to retire. He was subsequently awarded the Bharat Ratna, the nation's highest civilian award. Within months of his retirement, early in September 1962, his wife Rajvanshi Devi passed away. In a letter written a month before his death to one devoted to him, he said, "I have a feeling that the end is near, end of the energy to do, end of my very existence". He died on 28 February 1963 with 'Ram Ram Ram' on his lips. Because of the enormous public adulation he enjoyed, he was referred to as Desh Ratna or the Jewel of the country. His legacy is being ably carried forward by his great grandson Ashoka Jahnavi-Prasad, a psychiatrist and a scientist of international repute who introduced sodium valproate as a safer alternative to lithium salts in the treatment of bipolar disorders. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

जम्मू-कश्मीर में सुरक्षा बलों ने, अपने को जैश-ए-मोहम्मद का प्रमुख बताने वाले आतंकवादी सज्जाद अफगानी और उसके अंगरक्षक को श्रीनगर के बाहरी इलाके में डल झील के पास मुठभेड़ में मार गिराया है। विशेष सूचना मिलने पर पुलिस ने डल झील के पास से गुजर रही एक कार का पीछा किया और उसे रोका तो आतंकवादियों ने पुलिस पर गोलियां चलानी शुरू कर दीं। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि पुलिस ने भी जवाब में गोलियां चलाई और अफगानी तथा उसका अंगरक्षक मारे गये।
सज्जाद अफगानी का मार गिराया जाना राज्य पुलिस की एक बड़ी सफलता है। पुलिस के अनुसार यह पाकिस्तान आतंकवादी आठ वर्षों से घाटी में सक्रिय था। पुलिस का यह भी मानना है कि वो श्रीनगर शहर में अपने गुट को फिर से स्थापित करने के लिए यहां आया था ताकि आने वाले महीनों में हिंसात्मक गतिविधियों को अंजाम दिया जा सके। आज पुलिस को बड़ी सफलता मिल गई है। इस घटना से सतर्कता बरकरार रखने की आवश्यकता का उल्लेख हुआ है।

सी. बी. आई. ने राजधानी के तालकटोरा और शिवाजी स्टेडियमों की मरम्मत के काम में शामिल विभिन्न एजेंसियों के कर्मियों के १८ ठिकानों पर देशभर में तलाशी ली है और तीन नये मामले दर्ज किये हैं। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि सी. बी. आई. ने इस काम में शामिल एजेंसियों के खिलाफ दो मामले दर्ज किये और खेलों के दौरान सलाहकारों की नियुक्ति के सम्बन्ध में भी एक मामला दर्ज किया गया। सी. बी. आई. ने आज सुबह राष्ट्रीय राजधानी क्षेत्र, कोलकाता तथा अन्य शहरों में तलाशी अभियान चलाये। भारी खर्च के बावजूद शिवाजी स्टेडियम की मरम्मत का काम राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों के दौरान पूरा नहीं हो पाया था और तालकटोरा स्टेडियम की मरम्मत के खर्चें में वृद्धि पर भी सवाल उठाये गये थे।

मुम्बई की सत्र अदालत ने आज पुणे के व्यापारी हसन अली खान के मामले की सुनवाई कल तक के लिए स्थगित कर दी। प्रवर्तन निदेशालय ने हसन अली के खिलाफ मजबूत मामला बनाने के लिए और समय मांगा था। निदेशालय ने अदालत को बताया कि खान से कई बार पूछताछ की गई लेकिन उसने सहयोग नहीं किया। हमारी संवाददाता ने बताया है कि अदालत ने निदेशालय को अपना काम पूरा करने और पर्याप्त सबूत लाने के लिए २४ घंटे का वक्त दिया है।
काले धन का कुबेर और हवाला कारोबार के बेताज बादशाह हसल अली खां को आई ईवी ने मुंबई के सत्र न्यायाधीश एम एल ताहिरयानी की अदालत में पेश किया गया जहां कोर्ट ने दोनों पक्षों की दलीलें सुनने के बाद कल फैसला सुनने तक हसन अली खान को ईडी हिरासत में रखने का आदेश दिया। इससे पहले कोर्ट ने ईडी पुख्ता सबूत न होने की वजह से फटकार लगाई थी। लुबना युसुफ मूसा आकाशवाणी समाचार मुंबई।
हसन अली पर युनाइटेड बैंक ऑफ स्विटजरलैण्ड की ज्यूरिक शाखा में आठ अरब डॉलर जमा करने का आरोप है। उस पर १९९९ के बाद से अपनी आय छिपाने और कर चोरी का भी आरोप है, जो ४० हजार करोड़ रूपये से अधिक का है।

एन्ट्रिक्स और देवास मल्टीमीडिया के बीच हुए समझौते की कमियों के बारे में जांच करने के लिए गठित उच्चाधिकार प्राप्त समीक्षा समिति जल्दी ही सरकार को अपनी रिपोर्ट सौंपेगी। पूर्व मंत्रिमंडलीय सचिव बी. के. चतुर्वेदी की अध्यक्षता में यह समिति इस साल फरवरी में गठित की गयी थी। यह जानकारी आज राज्यसभा में प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय में राज्यमंत्री वी. नारायण सामी ने दी।

भारत, सोमालिया के समुद्री डाकुओं द्वारा बंधक बनाये गये ५३ बंधक नाविकों की सुरक्षित रिहाई के लिए हरसंभव प्रयास कर रहा है। विदेश मंत्रालय के प्रवक्ता विष्णु प्रकाश ने बताया कि काहिरा में भारतीय राजदूत और दुबई में महा वाणिज्य दूत का उन दूसरे देशों के साथ लगातार सम्पर्क बना हुआ है, जिनके लोग भी बंधक बनाए गए हैं।
श्री विष्णु प्रकाश ने बताया कि सोमालिया के तट के पास समुद्री डाकुओं की समस्या से निपटने के लिए भारतीयों की सुरक्षा को उच्च प्राथमिकता दी जा रही है।
भारतीय नागरिकों की सुरक्षा और संरक्षण देश के लिए उच्च प्राथमिकता में शामिल है। इस समय ५३ भारतीय नाविक अभी भी बंधक हैं। ११ भारतीय नाविक जो अफीराना पर थे उन्हें सोमाली बंधकों ने रिहा कर दिया था।
श्री विष्णु प्रकाश ने कहा कि नौवहन मंत्रालय, जहाजों के मालिकों और प्रबन्धकों के साथ सम्पर्क बनाये हुए है और विदेश मंत्रालय सम्बन्धित पक्षों के साथ बातचीत करने में उनकी मदद कर रहा है। यह मामला आज राज्यसभा में उठा, जब भाजपा और वामपंथी सदस्यों ने नाविकों की रिहाई के लिए सरकार द्वारा किये जा रहे प्रयासों के बारे में स्पष्टीकरण मांगा। विदेशमंत्री एस.एम. कृष्णा ने जवाब में कहा कि जहाजों के मालिक, समुद्री डाकुओं के साथ बातचीत कर रहे हैं।
समुद्री डाकुओं द्वारा बंधक बनाये गये लोगों को रिहाई में मदद के लिए उनके परिवारों ने आज लोकसभा अध्यक्ष मीरा कुमार और विपक्ष की नेता सुषमा स्वराज से मुलाकात की।

लीबिया से भारतीय नागरिकों को निकालने के लिए बड़े पैमाने पर चलाया गया अभियान आज रात तक पूरा हो जाने की उम्मीद है। विदेश मंत्रालय ने नई दिल्ली में जारी बयान में कहा कि लीबिया से करीब पन्द्रह हजार चार सौ भारतीय, स्वदेश आ चुके हैं, जिनमें से दो हजार चार सौ लोग, कल रात और आज सुबह भारत पहुंचे हैं। ये लोग लीबिया में त्रिपोली और सेबहा, मिस्र में सिकन्दरिया और माल्टा से नौ विशेष उड़ानों से स्वदेश आये हैं। छब्बीस फरवरी से अब तक ४७ चार्टर उड़ानें हुई। इस अभियान के अंतिम चरण में एयर इंडिया के विमान लीबिया से आने के इच्छुक भारतीय व्यावसायिकों और कर्मचारियों को वापस लाने के लिए त्रिपोली और सेबहा जा रहे हैं। आशा है कि ये आज देर रात या कल तड़के लौंट आयेंगे। इस बीच, भारतीय नौसेना पोत-जलाश्व आज दोपहर त्रिपोली गोदी में पहुंचा और यह बाकी बचे भारतीय नागरिकों को, स्वदेश लौटने में मदद कर रहा है।

म्यामां की सीमा के निकट दक्षिण-पश्चिमी चीन के दूर-दराज के एक इलाके में आज आये भूकम्प में चौबीस लोगों के मारे जाने और दो सौ से अधिक के घायल होने की खबर है। एक अधिकारी के अनुसार रिक्टर पैमाने पर पांच दशमलव आठ मापे गये इस भूकम्प का केन्द्र युन्नान प्रांत में डाली के करीब २२५ किलोमीटर पश्चिम-दक्षिण पश्चिम में स्थित था। प्रत्यक्षदर्शियों ने समाचार एजेंसी को बताया कि भूकम्प के झटकों से एक सुपर बाजार और एक होटल ढह गये और इनके मलबे में लोग दब गये।

असम में चार अप्रैल को होने वाले पहले चरण के विधानसभा चुनाव के लिए औपचारिक अधिसूचना आज जारी कर दी गई।
हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि असम में सत्तारूढ़ कांग्रेस पार्टी के घटक दल बोडोलैंड पीपुल्स फ्रंट ने अपने १७ उम्मीदवारों की सूची जारी कर दी है। पार्टी चुनाव के बाद कांग्रेस के साथ गठबंधन कर सकती है।
राज्य सरकार में भागीदार बोडोलैंड पीपुल्स फ्रंट ने आज १७ उम्मीदवारों के नाम घोषित किए। इसमें राज्य के मंत्री प्रमिला रानी ब्रह्म कोकराझार से चंदन ब्रह्म सिडली से और रिहोन डेमरी उदालगुडी से चुनाव में भाग लेंगे। पार्टी की दूसरी लिस्ट १६ तारीख तक घोषणा करने की उम्मीद है। इधर भारतीय जनता पार्टी ने भी आज तीसरी लिस्ट की घोषणा कर दी है। इस लिस्ट में ५० उम्मीदवारों का नाम है। पार्टियां अगले एक दो दिन में अपनी चौथी लिस्ट की घोषणा करने की संभावना है। सत्तारूढ़ कांग्रेस आगामी १४ तक अपने उम्मीदवारों की घोषणा करेगी। रमनीकांत शर्मा के साथ मानस कुमार शर्मा आकाशवाणी समाचार।

मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी ने निर्वाचन आयोग से चुनाव आचार संहिता लागू होने के बाद रेल मंत्री ममता बनर्जी द्वारा कालेज छात्राओं को मुफ्त स्थानीय रेल यात्रा की सुविधा की घोषणा पर स्पष्टीकरण मांगने को कहा है। पार्टी नेता सीताराम येचुरी ने कहा कि निर्वाचन आयोग को रेल मंत्री के लिए वही मानदंड अपनाना चाहिये, जैसा केरल की वाम लोकतांत्रिक मोर्चा सरकार के मामले में किया गया था।

आंध्रप्रदेश में कड़ी सुरक्षा के बावजूद, हैदराबाद में आज मिलियन मार्च विरोध प्रदर्शन आयोजित किया गया। तेलंगाना संयुक्त कार्रवाई समिति द्वारा आयोजित यह मार्च उस समय हिंसक हो उठा जब आंदोलनकारियों ने पुलिस, कांग्रेस नेताओं और पत्रकारों पर हमला कर दिया। बाद में भारी संख्या में सुरक्षाबलों को बुलाया गया और उन्होंने मार्च स्थल टैक बंध को खाली कराने के लिए कार्रवाई शुरू की।

हसन अली पर युनाइटेड बैंक ऑफ स्विटजरलैण्ड की ज्यूरिक शाखा में आठ अरब डॉलर जमा करने का आरोप है। उस पर १९९९ के बाद से अपनी आय छिपाने और कर चोरी का भी आरोप है, जो ४० हजार करोड़ रूपये से अधिक का है।

एन्ट्रिक्स और देवास मल्टीमीडिया के बीच हुए समझौते की कमियों के बारे में जांच करने के लिए गठित उच्चाधिकार प्राप्त समीक्षा समिति जल्दी ही सरकार को अपनी रिपोर्ट सौंपेगी। पूर्व मंत्रिमंडलीय सचिव बी. के. चतुर्वेदी की अध्यक्षता में यह समिति इस साल फरवरी में गठित की गयी थी। यह जानकारी आज राज्यसभा में प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय में राज्यमंत्री वी. नारायण सामी ने दी।

भारत, सोमालिया के समुद्री डाकुओं द्वारा बंधक बनाये गये ५३ बंधक नाविकों की सुरक्षित रिहाई के लिए हरसंभव प्रयास कर रहा है। विदेश मंत्रालय के प्रवक्ता विष्णु प्रकाश ने बताया कि काहिरा में भारतीय राजदूत और दुबई में महा वाणिज्य दूत का उन दूसरे देशों के साथ लगातार सम्पर्क बना हुआ है, जिनके लोग भी बंधक बनाए गए हैं।
श्री विष्णु प्रकाश ने बताया कि सोमालिया के तट के पास समुद्री डाकुओं की समस्या से निपटने के लिए भारतीयों की सुरक्षा को उच्च प्राथमिकता दी जा रही है।
भारतीय नागरिकों की सुरक्षा और संरक्षण देश के लिए उच्च प्राथमिकता में शामिल है। इस समय ५३ भारतीय नाविक अभी भी बंधक हैं। ११ भारतीय नाविक जो अफीराना पर थे उन्हें सोमाली बंधकों ने रिहा कर दिया था।
श्री विष्णु प्रकाश ने कहा कि नौवहन मंत्रालय, जहाजों के मालिकों और प्रबन्धकों के साथ सम्पर्क बनाये हुए है और विदेश मंत्रालय सम्बन्धित पक्षों के साथ बातचीत करने में उनकी मदद कर रहा है। यह मामला आज राज्यसभा में उठा, जब भाजपा और वामपंथी सदस्यों ने नाविकों की रिहाई के लिए सरकार द्वारा किये जा रहे प्रयासों के बारे में स्पष्टीकरण मांगा। विदेशमंत्री एस.एम. कृष्णा ने जवाब में कहा कि जहाजों के मालिक, समुद्री डाकुओं के साथ बातचीत कर रहे हैं।
समुद्री डाकुओं द्वारा बंधक बनाये गये लोगों को रिहाई में मदद के लिए उनके परिवारों ने आज लोकसभा अध्यक्ष मीरा कुमार और विपक्ष की नेता सुषमा स्वराज से मुलाकात की।

लीबिया से भारतीय नागरिकों को निकालने के लिए बड़े पैमाने पर चलाया गया अभियान आज रात तक पूरा हो जाने की उम्मीद है। विदेश मंत्रालय ने नई दिल्ली में जारी बयान में कहा कि लीबिया से करीब पन्द्रह हजार चार सौ भारतीय, स्वदेश आ चुके हैं, जिनमें से दो हजार चार सौ लोग, कल रात और आज सुबह भारत पहुंचे हैं। ये लोग लीबिया में त्रिपोली और सेबहा, मिस्र में सिकन्दरिया और माल्टा से नौ विशेष उड़ानों से स्वदेश आये हैं। छब्बीस फरवरी से अब तक ४७ चार्टर उड़ानें हुई। इस अभियान के अंतिम चरण में एयर इंडिया के विमान लीबिया से आने के इच्छुक भारतीय व्यावसायिकों और कर्मचारियों को वापस लाने के लिए त्रिपोली और सेबहा जा रहे हैं। आशा है कि ये आज देर रात या कल तड़के लौंट आयेंगे। इस बीच, भारतीय नौसेना पोत-जलाश्व आज दोपहर त्रिपोली गोदी में पहुंचा और यह बाकी बचे भारतीय नागरिकों को, स्वदेश लौटने में मदद कर रहा है।

म्यामां की सीमा के निकट दक्षिण-पश्चिमी चीन के दूर-दराज के एक इलाके में आज आये भूकम्प में चौबीस लोगों के मारे जाने और दो सौ से अधिक के घायल होने की खबर है। एक अधिकारी के अनुसार रिक्टर पैमाने पर पांच दशमलव आठ मापे गये इस भूकम्प का केन्द्र युन्नान प्रांत में डाली के करीब २२५ किलोमीटर पश्चिम-दक्षिण पश्चिम में स्थित था। प्रत्यक्षदर्शियों ने समाचार एजेंसी को बताया कि भूकम्प के झटकों से एक सुपर बाजार और एक होटल ढह गये और इनके मलबे में लोग दब गये।

निर्वाचन आयोग ने पांच राज्यों में विधानसभा चुनाव के लिए नियुक्त किये गये पर्यवेक्षकों को आज निर्देश दिया कि वे संवेदनशील मतदान केंद्रों का मुआयना करें और डराये धमकाये जाने की संभावना वाले अतिसंवेदनशील क्षेत्रों की पहचान करें। सरकारी विज्ञप्ति के अनुसार तमिलनाडु, पश्चिम बंगाल , असम , केरल और पुडुचेरी में नियुक्त किये गये करीब एक हजार पर्यवेक्षकों को संबोधित करते हुए मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त एस वाई कुरैशी ने कहा कि वे अपने अपने आवंटित क्षेत्रों का व्यापक दौरा कर कमजोर और सुविधाहीन तबकों में विश्वास जगायें।

असम में चार अप्रैल को होने वाले पहले चरण के विधानसभा चुनाव के लिए औपचारिक अधिसूचना आज जारी कर दी गई।
हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि असम में सत्तारूढ़ कांग्रेस पार्टी के घटक दल बोडोलैंड पीपुल्स फ्रंट ने अपने १७ उम्मीदवारों की सूची जारी कर दी है। पार्टी चुनाव के बाद कांग्रेस के साथ गठबंधन कर सकती है।
राज्य सरकार में भागीदार बोडोलैंड पीपुल्स फ्रंट ने आज १७ उम्मीदवारों के नाम घोषित किए। इसमें राज्य के मंत्री प्रमिला रानी ब्रह्म कोकराझार से चंदन ब्रह्म सिडली से और रिहोन डेमरी उदालगुडी से चुनाव में भाग लेंगे। पार्टी की दूसरी लिस्ट १६ तारीख तक घोषणा करने की उम्मीद है। इधर भारतीय जनता पार्टी ने भी आज तीसरी लिस्ट की घोषणा कर दी है। इस लिस्ट में ५० उम्मीदवारों का नाम है। पार्टियां अगले एक दो दिन में अपनी चौथी लिस्ट की घोषणा करने की संभावना है। सत्तारूढ़ कांग्रेस आगामी १४ तक अपने उम्मीदवारों की घोषणा करेगी। रमनीकांत शर्मा के साथ मानस कुमार शर्मा आकाशवाणी समाचार।

मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी ने निर्वाचन आयोग से चुनाव आचार संहिता लागू होने के बाद रेल मंत्री ममता बनर्जी द्वारा कालेज छात्राओं को मुफ्त स्थानीय रेल यात्रा की सुविधा की घोषणा पर स्पष्टीकरण मांगने को कहा है। पार्टी नेता सीताराम येचुरी ने कहा कि निर्वाचन आयोग को रेल मंत्री के लिए वही मानदंड अपनाना चाहिये, जैसा केरल की वाम लोकतांत्रिक मोर्चा सरकार के मामले में किया गया था।

आंध्रप्रदेश में कड़ी सुरक्षा के बावजूद, हैदराबाद में आज मिलियन मार्च विरोध प्रदर्शन आयोजित किया गया। तेलंगाना संयुक्त कार्रवाई समिति द्वारा आयोजित यह मार्च उस समय हिंसक हो उठा जब आंदोलनकारियों ने पुलिस, कांग्रेस नेताओं और पत्रकारों पर हमला कर दिया। बाद में भारी संख्या में सुरक्षाबलों को बुलाया गया और उन्होंने मार्च स्थल टैक बंध को खाली कराने के लिए कार्रवाई शुरू की।

खाद्य पदार्थों की मुद्रास्फीति की दर करीब तीन महीने के बाद १० प्रतिशत से कम दर्ज की गई है। पिछले महीने की २६ तारीख को समाप्त हुए सप्ताह के दौरान यह ९ दशमलव पांच-दो प्रतिशत पर थी। इससे पहले के हफ्ते में यह दर १० दशमलव तीन-नौ प्रतिशत थी। आलू, दालों और गेहूं के दाम कम होने के कारण मुद्रास्फीति की दर में यह गिरावट दर्ज की गई है।

In Jammu & Kashmir, self-styled chief of Jaish-e-Mohammad Sajjad Afghani and his bodyguard were killed in an encounter with security forces near Dal Lake on the outskirts of capital Srinagar today. Acting on specific information, police followed a private car moving along the Foreshore Road on the banks of Dal lake and intercepted the vehicle. Officials said, the militants opened fire on the police, and in the ensuing encounter Afghani and his bodyguard were eliminated.

In a major breakthrough, the joint forces today killed top-ranking Maoist leader Sasadhar Mahato and arrested a person at Kapgari in the Jamboni police station area in West Midnapore district. IG (CRPF), T B Rao told the media that top-ranking Maoist leader Sasadhar Mahato has been killed in an encounter and one AK 47 rifle has been recovered from him at Binpur under Jhargram police station. Rao said one more person has been arrested, but his identity is not yet known and that the encounter and search operation is still going on.

In Andhra Pradesh, the Million March protest for a separate Telangana state was held amid tight security arrangements in Hyderabad today. AIR Correspondent reports that the March organized by Telangana Joint Action Committee turned violent when the agitators attacked Police, Congress leaders and media reporters.
The additional police forces deployed and traffic restrictions imposed in and around Hyderabad could only restrict the number of agitators reaching the place of protest. Despite prohibition orders in force, thousands of protestors including women have broken barricades and removed barbed wires to reach the historic Tank Bund where the protest March has been held. The protestors have taken oath that they would further strengthen the agitation in support of separate Telangana state. Earlier police have taken hundreds of agitators and leaders of political parties into custody to prevent them taking part in the protest. They also foiled a bid by Osmania University Students and Employees who tried to take out rallies to the Million March.

The CBI today carried out nationwide searches at 18 locations on the premises of functionaries of various agencies involved in renovation of Talkatora and Shivaji stadia and registered three fresh cases. AIR correspondent reports, CBI registered two cases against agencies involved in the restoration and renovation work of these stadia and a separate case regarding the appointment of consultants during the games. The agency sleuths carried out searches in the National Capital Region, Kolkata and other cities early this morning. The restoration work on Shivaji Stadium could not be completed during the Commonwealth Games despite huge costs incurred and question marks were raised about the escalation of the cost in renovation of Talkatora stadium. Regarding the appointment of consultants, the CBI is trying to ascertain whether the professional profiles of the consultants, mentioned in the CWG Organising Committee records were true.

Mumbai session court today extended by a day the custody of Hasan Ali Khan, accused of stashing away billions of dollars abroad, and also severely reprimanded the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) lawyer for coming to the court unprepared. The spokesman of the External Affairs Ministry Vishnu Prakash told reporters in New Delhi that Indian Ambassador in Cairo and Counsuler General in Dubai are in touch with other countries whose people also have been held captive.
The issue figured in the Rajya Sabha today with the BJP and Left members seeking clarification from the government whether they are making efforts to get the sailors released. Responding to their concerns, External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna said that ship owners are engaged in negotiations with pirates.

After a gap of nearly three months, food inflation fell to a single digit at 9.52 per cent for the week ended February 26 on account of a decline in prices of potatoes, pulses and wheat. Food inflation had stood at 10.39 per cent in the previous week. The rate of price rise of food items has fallen to a single-digit figure for the first time since the week ended December 4, 2010, when it was 9.46 per cent. For the week under review, prices of wheat declined by 1.07 per cent on an annual basis, while pulses rates fell by 3.91 per cent. Prices of potatoes also fell by nearly 9 per cent year-on-year.

The mammoth operation of evacuating about Indian nationals from strife-torn Libya is expected to be over tonight .A Ministry of External Affairs statement said in New Delhi, some 15,400 of Indians are already home from Libya, including 2400 who have returned over last evening and this morning. They came back on 9 special flights, from Tripoli and Sebha in Libya, Alexandria in Egypt and Malta. 47 air charter sorties have been undertaken since the commencement of the evacuation exercise on February 26th.In the last leg of this operation, special Air India flights are heading for Tripoli and Sebha to ferry back the remaining Indian professionals and workers desirous of leaving Libya. These flights are expected back late tonight and in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Strongly reacting to Sri Lanka's allegations of presence of LTTE camps in the country, India today categorically denied existence of such camps and asked Colombo to desist from reacting to speculative and uncorroborated reports. The external affairs Ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said this while talking to reporters in New Delhi today. He said the government of Sri Lanka has also not taken up this issue with India. At least 24 people were killed and hundreds others injured in a 5.8-magnitude earthquake that jolted Yingjiang County in southwest China's Yunnan Province around noon today. The county government updated the figures at 7:20 p.m. local time, saying 201 people were injured, with 33 in serious condition. Authorities said the earthquake toppled 583 houses or apartments, mainly in the county seat near the border with Myanmar. Witnesses reportedly said people were buried under debris and part of a supermarket and a hotel caved in.

The President Mrs. Pratiba Devi Singh Patil arrived at Imphal this afternoon on a two-day official visit to Manipur. She was received at the Imphal airport by the state Governor Gurbachan Jagat, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and his cabinet colleagues. This is the first visit of Mrs. Patil to Manipur after she became President of the country in July, 2007. The State Assembly session was adjourned for the day just after the question hour in view of the president’s visit. In Odisha, mass nesting of rare Olive Ridley turtles has started at the Rushikulya rookery coast in Ganjam district, about 150 km from Bhubaneswar. Thousands of mother turtles are travelling every night up to the sandy beach to lay their eggs. These turtles are laying eggs in a stretch of about four kilometres of beach from Purunabandha to Podampeta of Rushikulya coast. According to Berhampur Divisional Forest office, more than 2.5 lakh eggs have so far been laid, The mass nesting process is expected to continue for around a week. According to experts, environmental factors delayed the mass nesting of Olive Ridleys by around two weeks this year.
