Rail Budget Highlights


  • Annual investment of over 57,000 crore rupees.
  • Rail based industries to be set up under Vision 2020 to meet the demand for coaches.
  • Metro Coach Factory to be set up in Kolkata.
  • Coach factory to be set up in Singur.
  • Economic focus along with social concerns.
  • Railway Industrial Park to be set up in Nandigram.
  • 10,000 shelters to be built for homeless.
  • Housing units will come up in Mumbai, Sealdah, Siliguri and Tiruchirapalli on pilot basis.
  • Manipur to be connected to Rail network for the first time.
  • Proposal for setting  up gas-based power plant in Maharashtra.
  • Diesel Locomotive Centre at Manipur.
  • Railway Bridge Factory in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Safety will be first priority for Railways.
  • Centre for Excellence in software will be set up by CRIS.
  • 85 new proposals through Public-Private partnership.
  • Anti-collision devices to be commissioned in three railway zones including South and South Central soon.
  • No increase in passenger fares.
  • Nine new Duranto, frequency of five Duranto trains to be increased.
  • Three new Shatabdi - Pune-Secunderabad, Jaipur- Agra, Ludhiana-Delhi.  
  • 56 new express trains and 13 new passenger services.
  • A new Super AC class , New Go India smart card  and extension of concessions for senior citizens and physically challenged.
  • Ten Rajya Rani express trains connecting state capitals with important cities.
  • Four Kavi Guru Express trains and an equal number of  Vivek Express trains to commemorate the 150th  Birth anniversaries of Rabindrarnath Tagore and Swami Vivekanand.
  • To promote tourism, special  trains called Janam Bhumi Gaurav will also be run on four routes connecting important historical and educational places.
  • 25 new lines will be added while  six gauge conversion and 28 doubling projects would be taken up.
  • Sukhi Griha scheme under which  10,000 dwelling units  for those living along the rail track sides will be provided.
  • Pradhan Mantri Rail Vikas Yojana proposed for implementing social projects of the railways during the 12th plan.
  • Internet access on a pilot basis will be introduced in Howrah Rajdhani Express , Rail yatri sevaks with  modern trollies will be launched in six more stations and new portal for e ticketing would be set up.
  • Railway Vidyalay Prabandhan Board to improve the quality of education in 269 Railway schools.
