The Minister said it will be unfair for him to predict country's medal haul in the Olympics but admitted that
India still lacks a little bit in preparations for the Olympics. He said there are three main difficulties physical fitness, lack of infrastructure and lack of scientific staff and proper coaching in  preparing the sportspersons for the Olympics.

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has emphasised  to address the problem of late payments under  Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee Act, MGNREGA the earliest.  He was speaking after releasing a report card on    MGNREGA in New Delhi today.

I am encouraged  to learn that in Andhra Pradesh data entry is in real time and pay orders for wage payments are generated online. This directly addresses the issue of delayed payments and should be replicated elsewhere. There is a problem in this area and sooner we tackle this problem of delayed payment, I think the better results would be in the offing .
The Prime Minister said the  Panchayati Raj institutions have to rise to the challenge  to play the central role assigned to them. He said  the government has to provide resources to them.  The Prime Minister said more than 120 million jobcards are issued in MGNREGA each year and nearly 37, 000 crore rupees are earned by villagers across the country. He said MGNREGA reaches and benefits 50 million rural households in the country - almost one in four families.

It is perhaps the largest and most ambitious social security and public works programme in the world. No Welfare Scheme in recent memory has caught the imagination of the people as much as Mahatma Gandhi Narega has.
Dr. Singh said the MGNREGA offers the promise of entitlement, empowerment, security and opportunity to millions of the marginalized citizens. The prime minister expressed hope that  policy makers, public representatives,  implementing agencies and civil society enable more such independent evaluations.  He said in an unprecedented step in the direction of financial inclusion, nearly ten crore bank and post office accounts have been opened and around 80 percent of MGNREGA payments are made through them.  The Prime Minister expressed hope that the new operational guidelines that will be issued by the Ministry of Rural Development will address issues brought out in the review.
