In an unexpected move and in a bid to tame the inflation, the Reserve Bank of India, RBI has decided to keep all the key rates unchanged in its mid-quarter policy review today. The cash reserve ratio, CRR has been kept unchanged at 4.75 per cent while the policy repo rate has been retained at 8 per cent. Consequently, the reverse repo rate will remain unchanged at 7 per cent, and the marginal standing facility rate and the Bank Rate at 9 per cent.
In its statement, the Reserve Bank said that it had front loaded the policy rate reduction in April with a cut of 50 basis points. However, it said that further reduction in the policy interest rate at this juncture could worsen inflationary pressures rather than supporting growth.
The RBI said that the euro area sovereign debt problem has continued to weigh on the global recovery. It added that while slowing global growth has dampened commodity prices, heightened risk aversion and the resultant slowing of capital flows will have a significant adverse impact on emerging and developing economies, including India. In order to help the export sector, RBI has raised the limit of export credit refinance from 15 per cent of outstanding export credit of banks, to 50 per cent.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said that high inflation must have influenced the RBI decision. Talking to media in New Delhi today, Mr Mukherjee said that Wholesale Price Index, WPI inflation was 7.56 per cent last month. He said, there has been some marginal increase in Consumer Price Index, CPI also.
“The inflation figures, WPI inflation in the month of May which was 7.56 little more than 7.33 and there has been some marginal increase in CPI also which might have weighed there decision making process. “

The Finance Minister clarified that it is not necessary for the RBI Governor to consult the Finance Minister for the Mid quarter review.

Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Montek Singh Ahluwalia has said that leaders of G20 countries  participating in the Las Cabos Summit, will primarily discuss an action plan to get the global economy back to some type of reasonable growth.
Mr Ahluwalia who is the chief interlocutor of the Prime Minister at the Summit, told newsmen in Los Cabos that the current economic crisis is more challenging to handle than the 2008 crisis.

“G-20 agenda is really what progress are we making in what was originally agreed to be a cooperative global action plan to restore growth and stability to some kind of reasonable growth.  I think the general assessment clearly is that the global economy is extremely  weak. Something does need to be said and hopefully even further done and that really what Los Cabos declaration in the end will hope to do.”

Replying to a question, Mr Ahulwalia said that
India has enough resilience to withstand the impact of the economic crisis in Euro Zone, though the developments have affected the country’s growth.

“We are fortunate that we are not in a position right now, where we have to  be looking for any kind of emergency assistance so we are not posing to G-20 to any specific thing that has to be done for

On the falling growth in India, Mr Ahluwalia said, a  significant part of the slowdown can be attributed to the global downturn. He said, coupled with this, there were some domestic problems that need to be addressed.

The Reserve Bank of India has kept all key rates unchanged. In its mid-quarter policy review today, the RBI kept the Cash Reserve Ratio, CRR unchanged at 4.75 per cent, while it retained the  Repo Rate at 8 per cent. Consequently, the Reverse Repo Rate will remain unchanged at 7 per cent, while the Marginal Standing Facility, MSF rate and the Bank Rate will remain at 9 per cent.
In its statement, the Reserve Bank said that it had front loaded the policy rate reduction in April with a cut of 50 basis points. However, it said that further reduction in the policy interest rate at this juncture could worsen inflationary pressures, rather than supporting growth. The RBI said, the Euro area sovereign debt problem continued to weigh on global recovery.
It added that while slowing global growth has dampened commodity prices, heightened risk aversion and the resultant slowing of capital flows will have a significant adverse impact on Emerging and Developing Economies including India.
In order to help the export sector, the RBI has raised the limit of export credit refinance from 15 per cent of outstanding export credit of banks, to 50 per cent. We spoke to Senior Economic Journalist Anshuman Tiwari about the RBI's decision to keep the key rates unchanged.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said that high inflation must have influenced the RBI decision. Mr Mukherjee was reacting to the RBI's decision to keep the key rates unchanged in its mid-quarter monetary policy.
They are retained the all crucial rates including CRR Repo rate reverse  Repo rate as it was perhaps the inflation figures, WPI inflation in the month of May which was 7.56 little more than 7.33 and there has been some marginal increase in CPI also which might have weighed there decision making process. “
Mr Mukherjee clarified that it is not necessary for the RBI Governor to consult the Finance Minister for the Mid quarter review.
The BJP has alleged that there is a complete disconnect and lack of consultation between the RBI and the government. Party spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said in New Delhi that the BJP has full respect for the autonomy of the RBI and its independence, but this does not imply absence of consultation.

The G-20 Summit begins at the Pacific desert resort of Los Cabos, Mexico tonight. The conclave is expected to call on member countries to increase contributions to the International Monetary Fund. Leaders attending the summit heaved a sigh of relief as news trickled in that Greece had voted for parties that support the European Union and the IMF led bailout terms. The summit has been overshadowed by the debt crisis in the Eurozone and the meltdown in the global economy.  Our correspondent covering the event has filed this report:
There is a sense of urgency among leaders who have arrived at the Summit that immediate action needs to be taken to deal with the crisis in the Eurozone and to put the global growth back on track, before it is too late. However, there seems to be divisions among the group on what needs to be the preion to meet the economic turmoil. During the first crisis in 2008, the big nations proved they were up to the challenge of responding collectively and decisively. Expecttions are high that the present summit will prepare a blueprint for global recovery because the stakes are high for all nations. Sanjay Ghosh, AIR News Los Cabos.
Cautioning leaders of the top industrialized nations and emerging economies, the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said the world is in deep trouble and expressed the hope that the summit will come up with constructive proposals to get the world out of the crisis.
