In a quantum leap in physics, scientists have discovered a sub-atomic particle Higgs boson, popularly known as the God particle, believed to be a crucial building block that led to the formation of the universe. An announcement to this effect was made by the scientists at Switzerland's CERN research centre near Geneva yesterday. The elusive particle is believed to have been responsible for lending mass to the particles that eventually formed the stars and the planets after the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago. CERN Director General Rolf Heuer said, the discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our Universe.
The particle was hypothesized in 1964 by six physicists, including Peter Higgs, Briton  whose name it came to bear. Boson, on the other hand, is derived from the surname of Indian physicist, Satyendra Nath Bose, a contemporary of Albert Einstein. Reacting to the historic announcement, Higgs said, he never expected this to have happen in his lifetime.

"Its just the confirmation of something that I did 48 years ago. It is very satisfying to be proved right in some way. From the point of view of a future Physics, the study of it will lead on to what lies beyond the standard of Molecular Physics which will have more interesting connections with Cosmology."

A large number of Indian scientists, representing the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, the Harishchandra Research Institute,
Allahabad and Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, were involved in the experiment.

"If  any young boy, a girl, a lady not involved with the CPM (Maoist) has been killed, I am deeply sorry but that is one matter that can only be established after."

In reply to a query, the Home Minister said that the operation was  conducted under state police direction and it is up to the state government to decide  whether or not it has to initiate an inquiry.

"Chief Minister Chattisgarh, spoke to me. I told him its entirely within his discretion to order any kind of inquiry because law and order is a state subject and the operations conducted under the guidance of state police. So let us see what decision he takes."
