Mr Jagdish Shettar will be the new Chief Minister of Karnataka. Announcing this in New Delhi today, BJP President Nitin Gadkari said, Mr Sadanand Gowda has submitted his resignation to the party and he has accepted it. Mr Gadkari said that a meeting of the party's core committee was held yesterday to discuss the political situation in the State.
"Our leader Arun Jaitly and Former Party President Rajnath Singh will go to Bangalore tomorrow. They will discuss with state party leaders and the state legislative party will meet. Thereafter, present Chief Minister Sadanand Gowda and Jagdish Shettar will meet the governor."
Asked if Deputy Chief Ministers would also be appointed by the party as was reported earlier, Mr Gadkari said, no such decision has been taken on this issue. Our Correspondent reports, this marks the  third change of leadership in the State in 11 months.
The latest change apparently comes because of pressure from Yeddyurappa, who was removed as Chief Minister last year in wake of corruption allegations against him. With the Assembly elections just 10 months away, the BJP central leadership accepted Yeddyurappa's demand who was insisting for some time now that Gowda should be replaced with his close associate Shettar, a Lingayat leader and Rural Development Minister.
Meanwhile, Congress has said that only fresh poll can solve the problems of Karnataka and not a change of guard. AICC General Secretary B K Hariprasad told reporters in New Delhi that there is a continuous governance paralysis in the BJP ruled state. He said, 129 talukas are suffering from severe drought and the state government has not taken any action to ameliorate the lot of the common people. Mr. Hariprasad said the government has also failed on the law and order front in Bangalore and other parts of the state.

Mr. Sahai said, they are seeking the involvement of corporates, PSUs and NGOs in the campaign as the project will be carried out in the Public Private Partnership, PPP model. There are about 14 tourist sites in the national capital including India Gate, Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, Lotus Temple, Jantar Mantar, Rajghat, Purana Qila and Safdarjung Tomb which have been selected to be covered under the project.
Besides Konark, Charminar, Kovalam Beach, Mysore Palace, Golkonda Fort, Ajanta Caves and Mahabodhi Temple, Har ki Pauri, Hawa Mahal are among the 98 chosen destinations across the country.

India today said, Afghanistan still faced an existential threat from terrorism emanating from beyond its border and asked the international community to provide substantial assistance to the war-torn nation that has experienced externally-imposed conflicts for three decades.
Addressing the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan, External Affair Minister S M Krishna said, clear and visible support to Afghanistan is crucial in order to preserve the gains made by the international community and Afghan men and women in the past decade.  He asked the international community to avoid the temptation to lay down conditionalities on such assistance.
Mr. Krishna said, India believes that good governance is crucial to the building of a strong and legitimate state. But good governance also requires a strong state that has full control over its territory. This is not yet the case in Afghanistan. He appreciated the Mutual Accountability Framework that has been drafted for the Conference as a noble effort. At the same time, Mr. Krishna said, India believes that true mutuality can only be achieved at equal levels of capacity.
The Tokyo conference is being attended by around 70 countries and international organisations. The main aim of the meet, which follows the series of conferences organised on Afghanistan during the last one year, include ensuring sustainable development of Afghanistan beyond 2012 and reaffirming partnership between the international community and the Afghan Government until 2014 and during the transformation decade of 2015-2024.
Meanwhile, donors at the conference have pledged to give Afghanistan 16 billion dollar in civilian aid over four years, in an attempt to safeguard its future after foreign forces leave. The biggest donors, the US, Japan, Germany and the UK, led the way at the Tokyo meeting in offering funds. The pledge came as Afghanistan agreed to new conditions to deal with endemic corruption.

External Affairs Minister S M Krishna will meet his Pakistani counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar in Tokyo today on the sidelines  of a conference on Afghanistan. He is expected to raise the issue of terrorism following revelations by LeT handler Syed Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal on the 2008 Mumbai carnage. Such a meeting between the two ministers comes after recent talks between their Foreign Secretaries on the crucial issues of peace and security, including terrorism, Jammu and Kashmir and promotion of friendly exchanges.

Libyans and the International community hailed the success of the first historic elections in the country after decades. Election Commission has put the initial turnout figures at around 60 per cent. Results are expected on Monday or Tuesday. One person was reported killed in the poll related violence. Barring the reports of ransacking of a dozen polling stations in Bengazi, Adjabiya and Brega, polling was by and large peaceful. Our Correspondent has filed this report:
"Libyans celebrated the nation’s journey on road to democracy by turning out in large numbers at the polling stations. Long queues of voters were seen at polling stations braving the high temperature. Election Commission said voting was smooth except for some polling stations in the eastern region of the country. International Observers monitoring the polls have hailed the organization of elections and people's participation but cautioned against the disruption of polls in the eastern parts of the country. The Head of EU Observers team Alexander Graf Lambsdorff said the situation in the eastern parts especially the city of Adjabiya was not encouraging. However, Libya's Deputy Interior Minister Omar Al Khadrawi told that the situation in eastern region is now under control. Reports suggest Ahmed Jibril’s National Front, Muslim Brotherhood’s The Justice and Construction Party, Islamist insurgent Abdul Hakim Belhadj’s Al Watan Party are the front runners in these elections.  Atul Tiwary, AIR News, Dubai."

A UN report has said, major global companies consider India their third most favoured destination after China and the United States and investment inflows could increase by more than 20 per cent both this year and the next. Releasing the UNCTAD's World Investment Report 2012, Mr. Nagesh Kumar, Chief Economist, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific said, Foreign direct investment (FDI) flows into India leapt 30 per cent to nearly 32 billion dollar in 2011. He said, though held back by slow pace of reforms, it still remains a long way down the league table of FDI recipients. China drew 124 billion dollar last year, while Brazil attracted nearly 67 billion and Russia 53 billion dollar.
Some 179 global companies - from the manufacturing, services and primary sectors - were surveyed between February and May, on their favoured investment destinations for 2012 to 2014. Mr. Kumar said FDI growth seems to be keeping its momentum in 2012.

Iran will close the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the oil-rich Gulf only if its crude revenues are seriously threatened. According to ISNA news agency, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, General Hassan Firouzabadi  said, they had plans to close the Strait of Hormuz because military commanders  must have plans for any situation. But Iran, acting rationally, would not close the corridor through which 40 percent of the world's energy passes, unless its interests were in serious trouble, he said, referring to the country's crucial crude revenues.

"This is the victory of corruption. BJP in Karnataka has brought about this change by blackmailing central BJP."
