The Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO successfully launched the country's first Radar Imaging Satellite RISAT-1 this morning. Polar Satellite launch Vehicle C-19, carrying the satellite, blasted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota at 5.47 AM. The vehicle injected the satellite into the desired orbit in 18 minutes. Addressing the media persons, ISRO Chief K Radhakrishnan described the launch a grand success.

"I am extremely happy to announce that the PSLV C-19 mission is a grand success. This is the 20th successful flight of our PSLV and it injected precisely
India's first Radar Imaging Satellite into the desired orbit."
It took ten years to build this remote sensing satellite, which is fitted with radar imaging apertures, a very complex technology. RISAT-1, the heaviest remote sensing satellite weighing 1,858 kilograms, can take pictures of the earth at all times through rain, sun, clouds, fog and cyclones. The data generated by RISAT-1 will be used in agriculture and disaster management. The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has congratulated ISRO scientists for the successful launch of RISAT-1. In a message, he said, the 20th consecutive successful launch of the PSLV is an important milestone in the country's space programme and is testimony to ISRO’s mastery of the complex launch vehicle technology. Our correspondent, who witnessed the launch, has filed this report from Sriharikota,

"The cool atmosphere in Sriharikota, where PSLV C-19 roared into the skies this morning, provided a perfect backdrop to the event. The enthusiastic media contingent, scientists and their families, who gathered to witness the event, cheered as the spectacular sight unfolded as the launch vehicle took off amidst a colourful orange fireball and a pleasing blue sky. Scientists heaved a sigh of relief even as the vital parameters showed signs of progress of the launch vehicle was very much in line with the plan. The proud moment came when the satellite RISAT was ejected into the orbit. Joy, AIR NEWS, reporting from Sriharikota."
