राष्ट्रपति ने कहा कि हम अब तक सबके लिए स्वास्थ्य का लक्ष्य पूरा नहीं कर पाये हैं और पिछड़े वर्गो तक स्वास्थ्य सुविधाएं नहीं पहुंचा पाए हैं। उन्होंने इस पेशे से सम्बद्ध सभी लोगों से कहा कि स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं को लोगों तक ज्यादा कुशल, प्रभावशाली और किफायती ढंग से पहुंचाने के तरीके ढूंढें। स्वास्थ्य राज्यमंत्री दिनेश त्रिवेदी ने कहा कि सरकार लोगों को बेहतर स्वास्थ्य सेवाएं मुहैया कराने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध है। उन्होंने रेडियोलॉजिस्ट से कहा कि ग्रामीण इलाकों में निदान केन्द्र खोलें।
यह वाकई बड़ी उपलब्धि है क्योंकि जब कल देर रात पुलिस को यह गुप्त सूचना मिली तो फटाफट एक टास्क फोर्स गठित कर धावा बोल दिया गया। सब कुछ कम समय में हुआ और पुलिस का कोई भी जवान शहीद नहीं हुआ और जब सुबह मारे गये नक्सलियों की सिनाख्त शुरू हुई तो इसमें सीपीआई माओइस्ट का जोनल कमांडर बसंत यादव और उसका विश्वासी नक्सल देवदत्त यादव की भी पहचान मृतकों के रूप में हुई है। पुलिस ने सर्च आपरेशन चला रखा है। अब तक एक एसएलआर राइफल, पांच ३१५ बोर की राइफल की बरामदी हो चुकी है जोकि पुलिस से लूटे हुए हथियार थे। साथ ही अन्य हथियार और गोलियां भी बरामद हुई हैं। संबंधित डीआईजी लक्ष्मण प्रसाद सिंह ने यह घोषणा की है कि इस अभियान में हिस्सा लेने वाले पुलिसकर्मियों को पुरस्कृत किया जाएगा।
न्यायमूर्ति आफताब आलम और आर. एम. लोढ़ा की खंडपीठ ने सुनवाई की अगली तारीख २३ फरवरी तय की है। अदालत इस मुकदमे की सुनवाई गुजरात से बाहर कराने की सी.बी.आई. की इस दलील पर विचार कर रही है कि वहां स्वतंत्र और निष्पक्ष रूप से सुनवाई नहीं हो सकती, क्योंकि मुकदमे की सुनवाई कर रहे न्यायाधीश तक शाह से प्रभावित हो गए थे।

The Supreme Court today ordered status quo in respect of land acquired or sought to be acquired for the proposed Vedanta University at Puri in Odisha. Following this, the Vedanta University project will continue to remain stalled. An apex court bench of Justice Mr. D K Jain and Justice Mr. H L Dattu ordered status quo on the nature, character and possession of the land acquired or sought to be acquired. The Odisha government and Anil Aggarwal Foundation, promoter of the project, had moved the Supreme Court challenging the Odisha High Court judgement faulting the land acquisition in the project. The Odisha High Court had directed the Odisha government and the Vedanta University authorities to return the acquired land to their original owners. The judgement had raised a lot of hue and cry in Odisha and sharp criticism from opposition political parties including the Congress and BJP.
The President Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil today called upon the medical fraternity to prevent female foeticide. Inaugurating the 64h national conference of the Indian radiologists and imaging association in New Delhi, Mrs Patil urged doctors to prevent diagnostic tests misused for the purpose of pre-natal gender determination. She said that laws in the country prohibit medical practitioners in disclosing the gender of the foetus. Mrs Patil said this is not only illegal but socially immoral and detrimental to the society. Saying the country is yet to reach the goal of health for all, Mrs Patil said access to affordability of healthcare especially for the underprivileged remain under accomplished tasks. The President called upon all stakeholders to look at ways of delivering healthcare more efficiently, effectively and in a cost effective manner.
The Prime Minister today called upon the youth to work towards meeting the real challenges before the country. Addressing the NCC rally in New Delhi today, Dr. Manmohan Singh said that the challenge of true leadership is not just to motivate to achieve but also to include the weakest link in the chain. Praising the role of country's young men and women, Dr.Singh said that the NCC plays an important role in inculcating a sense of national integration and discipline. The Prime Minister observed that the diversity in the society does not cause differences but is in fact a source of vitality.
The Prime Minister opined that NCC should set an example of working with local community for their uplift.

The government plans to set up a Committee for suggesting modes to procure supplementary nutrition food to be provided under the Integrated child Development scheme, ICDS scheme as take home ration. The panel will consist of food scientists and experts from the field of nutrition and premier food institutes. Expressing concern that some of the states are not adhering to the revised nutritional norms, Minister of Women and Child Development Mrs. Krishna Tirath said that the recommendation of the panel will be circulated to all the States and
Union Territories for their views. Later an affidavit will be submitted to the Supreme Court in this regard. She said that there is a need to examine whether the financial norms for providing supplementary nutrition under ICDS scheme should be linked to the wholesale and consumer price index as has been done in the mid day meal scheme. She said that providing sugar and vegetable oil at a subsidised rate in addition to wheat and rice could also be considered. Addressing a conference of State Ministers of Women and Child Development in New Delhi today Mrs. Tirath also suggested that the take home ration to the children in the age group of six months to three years and pregnant and lactating women need to be provided for full 365 days in a year instead of 300 days. <><><>
With growing influx of tourists, the Tourism sector offers great opportunity for foreign direct Investment. Inaugurating a Travel and Tourism Event in New Delhi today, the Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahai said that at present there is a shortage of almost two lakh hotel rooms in the country and this will increase manifold in the years to come. He said that infrastructure in this sector requires huge investment and he called for Public Private Partnership apart from foreign investment. The Minister said that India needs one trillion dollars of investment in infrastructure in the next fiscal and fifty percent of it has to come from private sector investment. He added that India attracts less than 0.5 percent of tourists from world over and efforts should be made to make it world's leading tourist destination.
In Gujarat, three people are killed and at least 12 people feared trapped in the debris following the collapse of a five storyed under construction building in Kalupur area of Ahmedabad this morning. Quoting official sources, our correspondent reports that two bodies have been recovered from the debris while 16 injured have been shifted to the Vadilal Sarabhai hospital. Relief and rescue works are on.
In Jharkhand, nine Maoists were killed in an encounter with the Police in village Lahur under Barwadih division in Latihar district. Speaking to AIR Ranchi correspondent the Superintendent of Police of Latihar said that Naxals had assembled in the village and the police came to know about it in the night itself. Immediately a task force was constituted under Sub Divisional Police Officer of Barwadih. CRPF jawans also took part in the operation that lasted for three hours.
In Madhya Pradesh, five youths were killed in Mandsour district early this morning when a sand mine suddenly caved in. The incident took place in Aantrikhurd village of Mandsour district. The district administration has announced an ex-gratia of thirty thousand each to the relatives of the deceased youths.
Andhra Pradesh Government today launched Smart Cards scheme based on Aadhaar number of Unique Identity Authority of India. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy formally distributed the first set of Smart Cards at Maheswaram in Ranga Reddy district today. With this Maheswaram has become the first Mandal in the country that is using Aadhaar based biometric authentication to enable people to claim benefits under different welfare programmes.
With an aim to bring transparency in implementing various welfare programmes, the Andhra Pradesh Government has introduced Smart Card system based on the Aadhaar number of the Unique Identity Authority of India. The multi purpose Smart Cards are now under preparation in seven districts of the state including Srikakulam, East Godavari, Adilabad, Hyderabad, Chittoor, Anantapur and Ranga Reddy on pilot basis. So far 6 lakh families have been issued the cards which will serve as ID proof for all purpose and going to replace the Rations cards under the Public Distribution System. These smart cards which will have the data collected using biometrics of all members of the family will help people claim benefits under different welfare programmes such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Rajeev Arogyasri- the health insurance for poor, scholarships, Social security pensions, housing and self-help group schemes and even for cooking gas. Using the Smart Card to facilitate introduction of - anywhere-ration facility for the migrating and nomadic families is also under consideration.
In Uttarakhand, the state government is going to provide cheap ration for below poverty line (BPL) and above poverty line (APL) families from the 1st of next month.
In Egypt, protesters have planned for a big protest today against the government of President Hosni Mubarak amid reports that Egyptian reform campaigner Mohamed ElBaradei has returned to the country last night. On arrival at Cairo, ElBaradei told his supporters who greeted him at the airport that this is a critical time for Egypt. In view of the planned protest, Egyptian security forces are on high alert. While clashes continue between Egyptian security forces and anti-government demonstrators, the ruling party secretary general Safwat El-Sherif has said that the government is open to public dialogue with the country's youth. While US President Barack Obama has said that reforms are critical for the country, the British Foreign Secretary William Hague has urged Egypt to move towards political reform in order to calm the growing unrest.
While protesters have planned to hold mass anti-government demonstrations in the country, the government has arrested number of opposition members and Internet and mobile services have been targeted in order to stop opposition to organise protests. The series of demonstrations are seen as biggest unrest against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule. Demonstrations are calling for sweeping political and economic changes in the country. Analysts say that like Tunisia the uprising has been triggered by lack of political participation, rise in food prices, high unemployment and a widening gap between rich and poor. Analysts also point out that unrests may spread out in some other countries in the region if necessary steps were not taken to address peoples’ aspiration.
The Justice Somasekhara Commission constituted to inquire into a series of attacks on churches in several districts of Karnataka during September 2008 submitted its report to the state government today. It said there is no basis to the apprehension of petitioners that politicians, BJP, mainstream Sangh Parivar and state government directly or indirectly are involved in the attacks.
The President of Nepal Dr.Rambaran Yadav has called for greater ties between India and Nepal. Addressing a function on the foundation day of the Medical College of Kolkata today, Dr.Yadav said that the democratic movements in his country have taken inspiration from India. He urged the medical fraternity to come forward for treatment of downtrodden people. West Bengal Chief Minister Mr.Buddhadev Bhattarcharjee was also present on the occasion.
National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon is in Washington to hold a series of meetings with top officials of the Obama Administration. He is scheduled to meet US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, his US counterpart Tom Donilon and Under Secretary for Political Affairs, William Burns today. State Department spokesman, P J Crowley told reporters at his daily news conference that the NSA will review the implementation of initiatives launched during the India visit of US President Barack Obama in November. Crowley said, Mr Shivshanker will also discuss developments in Indo-US bilateral ties in preparation for the upcoming Strategic Dialogue in New Delhi this spring.
Nation remembers Lala Lajpat Rai on his 145th Birth Anniversary today. A leading personality in the India's struggle for freedom and known as Punjab Kesari, Lala Ji was also the founder of Punjab National Bank and Lakshmi Insurance Company. A lawyer by profession and an Arya samaji by belief Lala Lajpat Rai led a procession against the Simon Commission in 1928, where he sustained injury on his chest during a lathi charge from which he could not recover and later died . He had said that every blow on his body would prove to be a nail into the coffin of British Imperialism.
The minimum temperature in the national capital fell to 6 degree celsius today. A slight mist was also seen over the capital in the early hours of the morning. The maximum temperature yesterday had dropped down to 18.6 degrees Celsius. The weather department has predicted that a misty morning will be followed by a mainly clear sky and a maximum temperature of around 22 degrees Celsius tomorrow. The minimum is also likely to climb tomorrow and weather officials said it could be around 9 degrees.

Steel Authority of India SAIL, proposes to sell its five percent stake through a public offer in the current fiscal. SAIL Chairman C S Verma told this to reporters in New Delhi last evening. He added that Attorney General of India G E Vahanvati has given legal opinion on the issue. The government intends to raise an estimated 4,000 crore rupees through this sale. The government now holds a little over 85 per cent stake in SAIL.
Erasing all its initial gains, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange had lost a hefty 315 points, or 1.7 percent, to 18,369, in afternoon trade, a short while ago. The Sensex fell on across-the-board selling presure, and especially in consumer durables, realty and auto stocks. Earlier, in the morning, however, the Sensex had managed to gain a modest 36 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 18,721, on bargain hunting by investors. The Sensex has already lost 467 points in the last two trading sessions. Elsewhere in Asia, the Japanese market led the decline in the regional bourses, after Standard & Poor's cut Japan's credit rating. So the key benchmark indices in Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and South Korea were down by between 0.3 percent and 1.2 percent.
The rupee depreciated by 13 paise to 45.70 against the Dollar today. It had closed at 45.57 against the greenback in the previous session. Dealers said, the Dollar's gains against other currencies overseas and month-end demand for the American currency weighed on the rupee sentiment.
Crude prices fell in Asian trade today as investors braced for further interest hikes in
China, the world's largest energy consumer. New York's main contract, light sweet crude was down 49 cents at 85.15 dollar per barrel. Brent North Sea crude dipped two cents at 97.37 dollar. Reports that Saudi Arabia is pumping more oil also dampened sentiment, analysts said.
India's Somdev Devvarman and his partner Rik De Voest of South Africa today entered the semifinal of the men's doubles event at the Singapore ATP challenger tennis tournament. They defeated Dmitry Tursonov of Russia and Chinese Taipei's Jimmy Wang 6-4 3-6 10-7 in Singapore.

The Chennai City Police Commissioner Rajendran today said that former IPL Chairman Lalit Modi has refused summons for the second time on a criminal complaint filed by the BCCI. Speaking to newsmen in Chennai today, he said that five others were also asked to appear before the Central Crime Branch by the end of this month. The Comissioner said that the city police would deal with this legally by approaching the Court.Fresh summons were issued on the second week of this month after the earlier one issued on December 27th last year

The US today said it will work diligently and forcefully to push for reform of the UN security Council. The White House also reaffirmed its support for India's quest for permanent seat in the top world body. The spokesperson of the National Security Council Mike Hammer told foreign journalists in Washington that the UN no longer reflects some of the realities of today and the US will continue to work on that. Reforming the Security Council, he said, is one of the top foreign policy agenda of the Obama Administration. At the same time he acknowledged that such a reform would take time.
A special appeals court in Myanmar has rejected an appeal by pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi to have her political party reinstated, after it was dissolved last year for refusing to register for national elections. The court in the capital of Naypyidaw ruled today that the National League for Democracy will remain a banned organization for failing to register for the November 7 poll. Meanwhile, Myanmar's new military-dominated Parliament will hold its first session on Monday.
South Korea has rejected a North Korean proposal for parliamentary talks. It insisted on the military talks it agreed to last week. Seoul said the latest offer from Pyongyang lacked sincerity. However, a report in South Korean media suggests the South has dropped its demand for an apology from the North. The JoongAng Daily reported that talks on the North's nuclear programme were separate from the provocations that require an apology. South Korea had demanded an apology from the North for last year's attacks on a Southern warship and island before nuclear talks could resume.
In Indonesia, five people were killed and many others injured when two passenger trains crashed head-on early this morning. The accident occurred on the outskirts of Banjar in West Java province. A railway official said, rescuers were still trying to reach several people trapped inside the crumpled carriages. Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the Transportation Ministry said they are investigating as to why the two trains happened to be on the same track. He said a passenger train traveling eastward from the city of Bandung collided with a westbound train from Surabaya.

in Indonesia, at least eleven people were killed when a fire broke out on a ferry sailing between the islands of Java and Sumatra.
An earthquake of 5.3 magnitude on the Richter Scale struck New Zealand's North Island near the town of Rotorua yesterday. The quake hit at a depth of 153 kilometers around 42 kilometers southwest of the town. The US Geological Survey said, there were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties. The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not issue any advice following the quake.
There is a growing concern in South Africa on the health of 92- year-old Nelson Mandela who is spending a second night in Johannesburg Hospital. President Jacob Zuma has sought to allay these concerns saying, his predecessor was in hospital for a routine checkup. However, close friends of Mr. Mandela say that his health has deteriorated over recent months.

उच्चतम न्यायालय ने ओड़ीशा में पुरी में प्रस्तावित वेदान्त विश्वविद्यालय के लिए अधिग्रहण की गई या की जाने वाली जमीन के मामले में यथास्थिति बनाये रखने का आदेश दिया है। इससे अब वेदान्त विश्वविद्यालय परियोजना पर काम रूका रहेगा। न्यायमूर्ति डी० के० जैन और न्यायमूर्ति एच० एल० दातु की पीठ ने अधिग्रहण की गई या की जाने वाली ज+मीन की स्थिति और कब्जे के बारे में यथास्थिति बनाये रखने का आदेश दिया। ओड़ीशा सरकार और परियोजना के प्रमोटर अनिल अग्रवाल फाउन्डेशन ने इस परियोजना के लिए भूमि अधिग्रहण में खामियां होने सम्बन्धी ओडीशा उच्च न्यायालय के फैसले को उच्चतम न्यायालय में चुनौती दी थी। ओड़ीशा उच्च न्यायालय ने राज्य सरकार और वेदान्त विश्वविद्यालय अधिकारियों को अधिग्रहण की गई जमीन उसके मूल मालिकों को वापस करने का निर्देश दिया था। इस फैसले को लेकर ओड़ीशा में बहुत हल्ला हुआ तथा कांग्रेस और भाजपा सहित विपक्षी दलों ने इसकी कड़ी आलोचना की थी।---
कर्नाटक में गिरजाघरों पर हमलों की जांच के लिए गठित न्यायमूर्ति बी० के० सोमशेखर आयोग ने आज राज्य सरकार को अपनी रिपोर्ट सौंप दी। बंगलौर में मुख्यमंत्री बी० एस० येडियुरप्पा को रिपोर्ट सौंपने के बाद न्यायमूर्ति सोमशेखर ने रिपोर्ट का ब्यौरा मीडिया के लिए जारी किया। उन्होंने कहा कि आयोग इस नतीजे पर पहुंचा है कि इन हमलों में न तो सत्तारूढ़ भाजपा और न ही संघ परिवार का कोई हाथ था। आयोग ने किसी भी तरह के धर्म परिवर्तन के खिलाफ कानून बनाये जाने की जोरदार सिफारिश की है। आयोग को लोगों, संगठनों और राज्य सरकार से एक हजार से अधिक ज्ञापन मिले थे। आयोग की तीन सौ से अधिक बैठकें हुईं और उसने आठ सौ से अधिक गवाहों के बयान दर्ज किये।---
राष्ट्रपति ने चिकित्साकर्मियों से कहा है कि बालिका भू्रण हत्या रोकें। नई दिल्ली में भारतीय रेडियोलॉजिस्ट और इमेजिंग एसोसिएशन के ६४वें राष्ट्रीय सम्मेलन का उद्घाटन करते हुए श्रीमती प्रतिभा देवीसिंह पाटील ने डॉक्टरों से आग्रह किया कि जन्म से पूर्व शिशु का लिंग जानने के उद्देश्य से निदान परीक्षणों का गलत इस्तेमाल न करें। उन्होंने कहा कि हमारे देश के कानून भी भ्रूण के लिंग परीक्षण के बारे में बताने की अनुमति नहीं देते। उन्होंने कहा कि यह गैरकानूनी ही नहीं, सामाजिक दृष्टि से भी अनैतिक और समाज को नुकसान पहुंचाता है।राष्ट्रपति ने कहा कि हम अब तक सबके लिए स्वास्थ्य का लक्ष्य पूरा नहीं कर पाये हैं और पिछड़े वर्गो तक स्वास्थ्य सुविधाएं नहीं पहुंचा पाए हैं। उन्होंने इस पेशे से सम्बद्ध सभी लोगों से कहा कि स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं को लोगों तक ज्यादा कुशल, प्रभावशाली और किफायती ढंग से पहुंचाने के तरीके ढूंढें। स्वास्थ्य राज्यमंत्री दिनेश त्रिवेदी ने कहा कि सरकार लोगों को बेहतर स्वास्थ्य सेवाएं मुहैया कराने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध है। उन्होंने रेडियोलॉजिस्ट से कहा कि ग्रामीण इलाकों में निदान केन्द्र खोलें।

सरकार, समन्वित बाल विकास योजना के तहत उपलब्ध कराने के लिए अतिरिक्त पौषाहार प्राप्त करने के तौर तरीकों पर सुझाव देने के लिए एक समिति गठित करेगी। इस समिति में पौष्टिक आहार क्षेत्र और प्रमुख खाद्य संस्थानों के खाद्य विशेषज्ञ तथा वैज्ञानिक शामिल किये जायेंगे। कुछ राज्यों द्वारा संशोधित पौष्टिक आहार नियमों का पालन न किये जाने पर चिन्ता व्यक्त करते हुए महिला और बाल विकास मंत्री कृष्णा तीरथ ने कहा कि समिति की सिफारिशों को सभी राज्यों और केन्द्रशासित प्रदेशों को उनके विचार जानने के लिए भेजा जायेगा। बाद में, उच्चतम न्यायालय में इस बारे में एक शपथ पत्र दायर किया जायेगा। उन्होंने कहा कि इस बात की जांच किये जाने की जरूरत है कि समन्वित बाल विकास योजना के तहत अतिरिक्त पौषाहार उपलब्ध कराने के वित्तीय नियमों को दोपहर का भोजन देने की योजना की तरह थोक और उपभोक्ता मूल्य सूचकांक से जोड़ा जाये या नहीं। उन्होंने कहा कि चावल और गेहूं के साथ साथ चीनी और वनस्पति तेल को भी रियायती दरों पर उपलब्ध कराने पर विचार किया जा सकता है। आज नई दिल्ली में राज्यों के महिला और बाल विकास मंत्रियों के सम्मेलन को सम्बोधित करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि देश में कुपोषण की बढ़ रही समस्या से निपटने के लिए राज्यों को अतिरिक्त पोषाहार उपलब्ध कराने में निजी और सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र की भागीदारी का तरीका अपनाना चाहिए। सबला और इन्दिरा गांधी मातृत्व सहयोग योजना को लागू करने का काम कर रहे आंगनवाड़ी केन्द्रों में बुनियादी सुविधाओं को मजबूत करने की आवश्यकता पर जोर देते हुए श्रीमती कृष्णा तीरथ ने कहा कि इन केन्द्रों को व्यक्तिगत या सामूहिक तौर पर मोबाइल सेट उपलब्ध कराने पर विचार किया जा सकता है।---
झारखंड में लातेहार जिले के लाहूर गांव में पुलिस के साथ मुठभेड़ में कम से कम नौ माओवादी मारे गए हैं। लातेहार के पुलिस अधीक्षक ने हमारे रांची संवाददाता को बताया है कि माओवादी इस गांव में छुपे हुए थे। बरवाडीह पुलिस ने इनके बारे में सूचना मिलने पर एक कार्रवाई बल का गठन किया और इनको धर दबोचने के लिए अभियान शुरू किया गया। यह वाकई बड़ी उपलब्धि है क्योंकि जब कल देर रात पुलिस को यह गुप्त सूचना मिली तो फटाफट एक टास्क फोर्स गठित कर धावा बोल दिया गया। सब कुछ कम समय में हुआ और पुलिस का कोई भी जवान शहीद नहीं हुआ और जब सुबह मारे गये नक्सलियों की सिनाख्त शुरू हुई तो इसमें सीपीआई माओइस्ट का जोनल कमांडर बसंत यादव और उसका विश्वासी नक्सल देवदत्त यादव की भी पहचान मृतकों के रूप में हुई है। पुलिस ने सर्च आपरेशन चला रखा है। अब तक एक एसएलआर राइफल, पांच ३१५ बोर की राइफल की बरामदी हो चुकी है जोकि पुलिस से लूटे हुए हथियार थे। साथ ही अन्य हथियार और गोलियां भी बरामद हुई हैं। संबंधित डीआईजी लक्ष्मण प्रसाद सिंह ने यह घोषणा की है कि इस अभियान में हिस्सा लेने वाले पुलिसकर्मियों को पुरस्कृत किया जाएगा।

उच्चतम न्यायालय ने केंद्रीय जांच ब्यूरो-सीबीआई को निर्देश दिया है कि सोहराबुद्दीन शेख फर्जी मुठभेड़ मुकदमे की सुनवाई गुजरात से बाहर कराए जाने के कारण बताये। न्यायालय ने सीबीआई. से यह भी कहा कि वह राज्य सरकार और राज्य के पूर्व मंत्री अमित शाह सहित सभी आरोपियों को इस बारे में दस्तावेज उपलब्ध कराए।न्यायमूर्ति आफताब आलम और आर. एम. लोढ़ा की खंडपीठ ने सुनवाई की अगली तारीख २३ फरवरी तय की है। अदालत इस मुकदमे की सुनवाई गुजरात से बाहर कराने की सी.बी.आई. की इस दलील पर विचार कर रही है कि वहां स्वतंत्र और निष्पक्ष रूप से सुनवाई नहीं हो सकती, क्योंकि मुकदमे की सुनवाई कर रहे न्यायाधीश तक शाह से प्रभावित हो गए थे।

मिस्र में सुधार आंदोलन के अग्रणी मोहम्मद अल बरदेई के कल रात स्वदेश पहुंचने की खबरों के बीच राष्ट्रपति हुस्नी मुबारक की सरकार के खिलाफ बड़े विरोध प्रदर्शन की तैयारी है। काहिरा पहुंचने पर श्री अल बरदेई ने हवाई अड्डे पर अपने समर्थकों से कहा कि यह मिस्र के लिए बहुत अहम समय है। मिस्र के सुरक्षाबलों और सरकार विरोधी प्रदर्शनकारियों के संघर्ष के बीच सत्तारूढ़ पार्टी के महासचिव सफवात अल शरीफ ने कहा है कि सरकार युवाओं के साथ खुली बातचीत के लिए तैयार है। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि मिस्र में पिछले कई वर्षों के बीच यह सबसे बड़ा विरोध प्रदर्शन है।देश में जहां आज बड़े विरोध प्रदर्शनों की तैयारी है वहीं सरकार ने बड़ी संख्या में प्रदर्शकारियों गिरफ्तार किया है और उन्हें संगठित होने से रोकने के लिए इंटरनेट और टेलीफोन सेवाएं बाधित की हैं। विरोधों की यह श्रृंखला मिस्र के राष्ट्रपति मुबारक के तीस वर्षों के शासन में सबसे बड़ी मानी जा रही है। प्रदर्शकारी देश में व्यापक राजनीतिक और आर्थिक बदलाव की मांग कर रहे हैं। विश्लेषकों को मानना है कि राजनीतिक सहभागिका के अभाव, महंगाई, बेरोजगारी के कारण उपजे इस विरोध के हल के लिए उपाय न किये गये तो इन विरोधों का सिलसिला क्षेत्र के अन्य देशों को भी अपनी चपेट में ले सकता है।

इण्डोनेशिया में जावा और सुमात्रा द्वीपों के बीच चलने वाली एक फैरी में आग लग जाने से कम से कम ११ लोगों की मृत्यु हो गई। परिवहन मंत्रालय का कहना है कि जावा के पश्चिमी छोर पर मेराक बंदरगाह से लगभग तीन किलोमीटर दूर सुन्द जलडमरू मध्य में इस फैरी में आग लग गई। चार सौ २७ लोगों को बचा लिया गया है, लेकिन लापता लोगों की संख्या का पता नहीं है।---

चेन्नई के पुलिस आयुक्त राजेन्द्रन ने कहा है कि आईपीएल के पूर्व अध्यक्ष ललित मोदी ने बीसीसीआई द्वारा दायर आपराधिक शिकायत पर भेजे गये सम्मन आज दूसरी बार ठुकरा दिये हैं। उन्होंने चेन्नई में कहा कि पांच अन्य लोगों से भी इस महीने के अंत तक केन्द्रीय अपराध शाखा के सामने पेश होने को कहा गया है। आयुक्त ने बताया कि चेन्नई पुलिस इसके खिलाफ कानूनी कार्रवाई के लिए अदालत में जाएगी। श्री मोदी के नाम २७ दिसम्बर को और फिर इस महीने के दूसरे सप्ताह में सम्मन जारी किये गये थे। श्री मोदी, कुणाल दास गुप्ता और अजय वर्मा के अलावा वेणु नायर, एण्ड्रू जॉर्जियो, सीमस ओ ब्रायन और हरीश कृष्णामचार के नाम भी फिर से सम्मन जारी किये गये हैं। इनमें से कुणाल दास गुप्ता और अजय वर्मा अपराध शाखा के सामने उपस्थित होकर सफाई दे चुके हैं।----

इंडियन एयरलाइन्स के साथ विलय के ४ वर्ष बाद अब एयर इंडिया का एक ही कोड होगा। ये एआई कोड सभी घरेलू और अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय उड़ानों पर फरवरी से लागू होगा।अभी एयरइंडिया की उड़ान दो अलग-अलग कोड पर चलती हैं, इनमें आई सी कोड घरेलू उड़ानों के लिए और एआई कोड अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय उड़ानों के लिए होता है। इससे यात्रियों को परेशानी होती है। उन्हें घरेलू और अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय उड़ानों पर अलग-अलग तरह के टिकट पर यात्रा करनी पड़ती है।

The Supreme Court today ordered status quo in respect of land acquired or sought to be acquired for the proposed Vedanta University at Puri in Odisha. Following this, the Vedanta University project will continue to remain stalled. An apex court bench of Justice Mr. D K Jain and Justice Mr. H L Dattu ordered status quo on the nature, character and possession of the land acquired or sought to be acquired. The Odisha government and Anil Aggarwal Foundation, promoter of the project, had moved the Supreme Court challenging the Odisha High Court judgement faulting the land acquisition in the project. The Odisha High Court had directed the Odisha government and the Vedanta University authorities to return the acquired land to their original owners. The judgement had raised a lot of hue and cry in Odisha and sharp criticism from opposition political parties including the Congress and BJP.

The President Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil today called upon the medical fraternity to prevent female foeticide. Inaugurating the 64h national conference of the Indian radiologists and imaging association in New Delhi, Mrs Patil urged doctors to prevent diagnostic tests misused for the purpose of pre-natal gender determination. She said that laws in the country prohibit medical practitioners in disclosing the gender of the foetus. Mrs Patil said this is not only illegal but socially immoral and detrimental to the society. Saying the country is yet to reach the goal of health for all, Mrs Patil said access to affordability of healthcare especially for the underprivileged remain under accomplished tasks. The President called upon all stakeholders to look at ways of delivering healthcare more efficiently, effectively and in a cost effective manner.

The government plans to set up a Committee for suggesting modes to procure supplementary nutrition food to be provided under the Integrated child Development scheme, ICDS scheme as take home ration. The panel will consist of food scientists and experts from the field of nutrition and premier food institutes. Expressing concern that some of the states are not adhering to the revised nutritional norms, Minister of Women and Child Development Mrs. Krishna Tirath said that the recommendation of the panel will be circulated to all the States and
Union Territories for their views. Later an affidavit will be submitted to the Supreme Court in this regard. She said that there is a need to examine whether the financial norms for providing supplementary nutrition under ICDS scheme should be linked to the wholesale and consumer price index as has been done in the mid day meal scheme. She said that providing sugar and vegetable oil at a subsidised rate in addition to wheat and rice could also be considered. Addressing a conference of State Ministers of Women and Child Development in New Delhi today Mrs. Tirath also suggested that the take home ration to the children in the age group of six months to three years and pregnant and lactating women need to be provided for full 365 days in a year instead of 300 days. <><><>

Inaugurating a Travel and Tourism Event in New Delhi today, the Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahai said that at present there is a shortage of almost two lakh hotel rooms in the country and this will increase manifold in the years to come. He said that infrastructure in this sector requires huge investment and he called for Public Private Partnership apart from foreign investment. The Minister said that India needs one trillion dollars of investment in infrastructure in the next fiscal and fifty percent of it has to come from private sector investment. In Jharkhand, nine Maoists were killed in an encounter with the Police in village Lahur under Barwadih division in Latihar district. Speaking to AIR Ranchi correspondent the Superintendent of Police of Latihar said that Naxals had assembled in the village and the police came to know about it in the night itself. Immediately a task force was constituted under Sub Divisional Police Officer of Barwadih. CRPF jawans also took part in the operation that lasted for three hours.

Andhra Pradesh Government today launched Smart Cards scheme based on Aadhaar number of Unique Identity Authority of India. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy formally distributed the first set of Smart Cards at Maheswaram in Ranga Reddy district today. With this Maheswaram has become the first Mandal in the country that is using Aadhaar based biometric authentication to enable people to claim benefits under different welfare programmes.
With an aim to bring transparency in implementing various welfare programmes, the Andhra Pradesh Government has introduced Smart Card system based on the Aadhaar number of the Unique Identity Authority of India. The multi purpose Smart Cards are now under preparation in seven districts of the state including Srikakulam, East Godavari, Adilabad, Hyderabad, Chittoor, Anantapur and Ranga Reddy on pilot basis. So far 6 lakh families have been issued the cards which will serve as ID proof for all purpose and going to replace the Rations cards under the Public Distribution System. These smart cards which will have the data collected using biometrics of all members of the family will help people claim benefits under different welfare programmes such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Rajeev Arogyasri- the health insurance for poor, scholarships, Social security pensions, housing and self-help group schemes and even for cooking gas. Using the Smart Card to facilitate introduction of - anywhere-ration facility for the migrating and nomadic families is also under consideration.

In Egypt, protesters have planned for a big protest today against the government of President Hosni Mubarak amid reports that Egyptian reform campaigner Mohamed ElBaradei has returned to the country last night. On arrival at Cairo, ElBaradei told his supporters who greeted him at the airport that this is a critical time for Egypt. In view of the planned protest, Egyptian security forces are on high alert. While clashes continue between Egyptian security forces and anti-government demonstrators, the ruling party secretary general Safwat El-Sherif has said that the government is open to public dialogue with the country's youth. While US President Barack Obama has said that reforms are critical for the country, the British Foreign Secretary William Hague has urged Egypt to move towards political reform in order to calm the growing unrest.
While protesters have planned to hold mass anti-government demonstrations in the country, the government has arrested number of opposition members and Internet and mobile services have been targeted in order to stop opposition to organise protests. The series of demonstrations are seen as biggest unrest against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule. Demonstrations are calling for sweeping political and economic changes in the country. Analysts say that like Tunisia the uprising has been triggered by lack of political participation, rise in food prices, high unemployment and a widening gap between rich and poor. Analysts also point out that unrests may spread out in some other countries in the region if necessary steps were not taken to address peoples’ aspiration.

Steel Authority of India SAIL, proposes to sell its five percent stake through a public offer in the current fiscal. SAIL Chairman C S Verma told this to reporters in New Delhi last evening. He added that Attorney General of India G E Vahanvati has given legal opinion on the issue. The government intends to raise an estimated 4,000 crore rupees through this sale. The government now holds a little over 85 per cent stake in SAIL.

Erasing all its initial gains, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange had lost a hefty 315 points, or 1.7 percent, to 18,369, in afternoon trade, a short while ago. The Sensex fell on across-the-board selling presure, and especially in consumer durables, realty and auto stocks. Earlier, in the morning, however, the Sensex had managed to gain a modest 36 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 18,721, on bargain hunting by investors. The Sensex has already lost 467 points in the last two trading sessions. Elsewhere in Asia, the Japanese market led the decline in the regional bourses, after Standard & Poor's cut Japan's credit rating. So the key benchmark indices in Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and South Korea were down by between 0.3 percent and 1.2 percent.

The Chennai City Police Commissioner Rajendran today said that former IPL Chairman Lalit Modi has refused summons for the second time on a criminal complaint filed by the BCCI. Speaking to newsmen in Chennai today, he said that five others were also asked to appear before the Central Crime Branch by the end of this month. The US today said it will work diligently and forcefully to push for reform of the UN security Council. The White House also reaffirmed its support for India's quest for permanent seat in the top world body. In Indonesia, five people were killed and many others injured when two passenger trains crashed head-on early this morning. The accident occurred on the outskirts of Banjar in West Java province. A railway official said, rescuers were still trying to reach several people trapped inside the crumpled carriages. Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the Transportation Ministry said they are investigating as to why the two trains happened to be on the same track. He said a passenger train traveling eastward from the city of Bandung collided with a westbound train from Surabaya.

President Jacob Zuma has sought to allay these concerns saying, his predecessor was in hospital for a routine checkup.
