The London Olympics 2012 kicked off with a splendid three and a half hour opening ceremony. Head of State Queen Elizabeth II declared the Games open, amidst thunderous cheers from the capacity crowd of 80,000, signaling the launch of the biggest sporting spectacle, which returned to Britain after a gap of 64 years.

Following the tradition, Greece was the first to enter the arena for the march past, while Great Britain, as host nation, was the last contingent to enter the stadium. Beijing Bronze winner wrestler Sushil Kumar led the largest ever Indian contingent, holding high the Indian tri-colour.

In his brief speech after the arrival of participating nations into the stadium, Chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, Sebastian Coe said,

London presented a vibrant picture of Great Britain's rich heritage and culture as a colourful opening ceremony marked the inauguration of the 30th Olympic Games at the Olympic stadium. Oscar-winning 'Slumdog Millionaire' director Danny Boyle masterminded the show, costing 27 million pounds, less than half the estimated spending on the Beijing equivalent in 2008 and dramatically different in style. A report from our correspondent;

The eagerly awaited opening ceremony began with a mass countdown and the chime of a giant bell, ushering in an exuberant celebration of British history, art and culture. The centre of the stadium was transformed into an English pastoral idyll complete with grassy meadows, fences, hedges, a water mill, maypoles and even a cottage with smoking chimney. A cast including shepherdesses, sheep, geese, dogs and a village cricket team filled the stage during the one-hour prologue to the show that included a dramatic, low-level fly-past by jets of the Royal Air Force's Red Arrows stunt team. About 80,000 spectators crowded into the state-of-the-art arena at the Olympic Park, built in a previously run-down area of the city's East End. Over a billion more people tuned in around the world for the extravaganza. Among the crowd were celebrities, ordinary Londoners, visitors from abroad and dignitaries including U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama as well as Presidents, Prime Ministers and European royalty. For the next 17 days, the drama of sporting contest takes hold as more than 10,000 athletes from 204 nations will aim to achieve their ultimate dream - Olympic gold. SAVVY HASAN KHAN, for AIR NEWS."

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has formally invited Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to visit Pakistan to bolster bilateral ties and also make a trip to his ancestral village in Punjab province on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti in November.  In a letter to Dr. Singh sent through the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi, Zardari said the visit will provide both countries an opportunity to take stock of their bilateral relations. The Prime Minister had in the past accepted in principle the invitation to visit Pakistan but made it clear that he would do so only if there is some tangible outcome. Zardari recalled his meeting with Dr. Singh in New Delhi during his private visit to Ajmer in April and expressed satisfaction over the forward movement in the bilateral dialogue process that resumed last year.
India and Pakistan resumed their peace process early last year after a gap of over two years in the wake of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

NEWSPAPERS HEADLINES
The 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony figures in every newspaper. "The 14.8 billion dollar show begins' writes the Economic Times. "Londoners let hair down for big party' is the Hindu headline. "Legally blind Korean archer sees bull's eye' says the Pioneer, of Im Dong-hyun, who smashed two world records before the opening. What is interesting is that he is near blind, with a 20/200 vision in his left eye and 10/100 vision in the right, writes the paper. "India off to a bad start' says the Hindustan Times, referring to the Indian archers.
As trouble still continues in Assam, a blame game seems to have started between the Chief Minister and the center. "Gogoi says central forces reached late' writes the Indian Express. "Forces fiddled as Assam burned' says Mail Today. Although Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi says that the situation is limping back to normal, the Hindustan Times quotes an inmate as saying 'we want to be home, not like animals in camps'.
Its bad news for former UP Chief Minister. 'ND Tiwari becomes a father at 86 years' is how the Times of India puts it, of the DNA test, which nailed him in a paternity suit.
Many papers have reported of Zardari's invitation to Indian Prime Minister. 'Zardari invites Manmohan' says the Hindu, and quotes him as saying 'visit your ancestral village on Guru Nanak Jayanti.'
Team Anna's listless agitation does not get much coverage today, except for the Hindustan Times and Times of India mentioning that Ramdev was the actual crowd puller.
And finally, what with soaring petrol prices -- 'Dream come true?' asks the Times of India, as it reports a Pakistani engineer, successfully developing a car, which runs on water!
