केन्द्र ने असम के हिंसाग्रस्त इलाकों में डाक्टरों और नर्सों के दो दल भेजे हैं। ये दल राहत शिविरों में शरण लिए लोगों को चिकित्सा सुविधा उपलब्ध कराने में राज्य सरकार की मदद करेंगे। कैबनेट सचिव अजीत सेठ ने वीडियो कांफ्रेंसिंग के जरिए राज्य के मुख्य सचिव के साथ राहत और चिकित्सा प्रबंधों की समीक्षा की। उन्होंने खाद्य और अन्य रोजमर्रा की चीजों की पर्याप्त उपलब्धता की भी समीक्षा की।प्रधानमंत्री असम के हिंसाग्रस्त इलाकों में स्थिति पर नियंत्रण के लिए उठाए गए कदमों की समीक्षा के लिए कल कोकराझार जिले का दौरा करेंगे। वे सरकार द्वारा चलाए जा रहे राहत और पुनर्वास कार्यों की भी समीक्षा करेंगे। डाक्टर मनमोहन सिंह दो राहत शिविरों का दौरा करेंगे। असम के मुख्यमंत्री तरूण गोगई प्रधानमंत्री के साथ रहेंगे।
इस बीच, हिंसाग्रस्त कोकराझार, चिरांग और धुवरी जिलों में स्थिति धीरे धीरे सामान्य हो रही है। श्री गोगोई ने आज गुवाहाटी में संवाददाताओं को बताया कि पिछले ४८ घंटों में बास्का जिले से दो मामलों को छोड़ कर कहीं से किसी नई हिंसक घटना की खबर नहीं है। श्री गोगेई ने लोगों से शांति और सौहार्द बनाए रखने की अपील की है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि हिंसक घटनाओं में मरने वालों की संख्या ४८ हो गई है।
असम सरकार ने लोगों से अनुरोध किया कि वो किसी तरह के अफवाहों पर ध्यान न दें। आर्मी के एक हजार तीन सौ जवानों के अलावा असम पुलिस और अर्द्धसैनिक बलों को शांति बहाली के लिए तैनात किया गया है। ंिहंसागत जिलों पर रात से फिर कर्फ्यू लगाया है। लगभग चार लाख लोग २७० राहत शिविरों में शरण लिए हुए हैं। प्रशासन द्वारा इन शिविरों पर पीने के लिए साफ पानी दवाईयां और जरूरी समान मुहैया किया जा रहा है। साथ ही डॉक्टर एम्बुलेंस और पैरामेडिकल कर्मचारी भी शिविरों पर तैनात हैं। मानस प्रतिम शर्मा, आकाशवाणी समाचार, गुवाहाटी।

दिल्ली उच्च न्यायालय ने आज फैसला सुनाया कि कांग्रेस नेता नारायण दत्त तिवारी दिल्ली के युवक रोहित शेखर के पिता हैं। आज खुली अदालत में डी एन ए टेस्ट का परिणाम घोषित करते हुए न्यायमूर्ति रेवा खेत्रपाल ने कहा कि रिपोर्ट के अनुसार श्री तिवारी रोहित शर्मा के पिता हैं और उज्वला शर्मा उसकी मां हैं। डी. एन. ए. टेस्ट हैदराबाद की प्रयोगशाला में किया गया था। फैसले के बाद श्री तिवारी ने कहा कि इस घटना को मुद्दा नहीं बनाया जाना चाहिए। उन्होंने कहा कि उन्हें अपनी शर्तों पर रहने का अधिकार है। उन्होंने कहा कि उन्हें अपने जैविक पुत्र रोहित शेखर से कोई शिकायत नहीं है।---
मुंबई की विशेष मकोका अदालत ने पत्रकार जे डे हत्याकांड में गिरफ्तार पत्रकार जिग्ना वोरा को आज जमानत दे दी। विशेष मकोका अदालत के न्यायाधीश एस एम मोदक ने जिग्ना को एक लाख रुपये की राशि पर जमानत दी। अदालत ने कहा कि उनका कोई आपराधिक अतीत नहीं रहा है। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि इस मामले में मुंबई पुलिस द्वारा आरोप पत्र दायर किया जा चुका है और जिग्ना की हिरासत में और आवश्यकता नहीं है। अदालत ने जिग्ना को सप्ताह में दो बार पुलिस की अपराध शाखा के समक्ष उपस्थित होने और तत्काल अपना पासपोर्ट मुंबई पुलिस को सौंपने का आदेश दिया है।-----
सरकार भारतीय मॉनसून भविष्यवाणी प्रणाली का विकास करने पर जोर देगी ताकि मॉनसून की अस्थिरता के कारणों को समझा जा सके। पृथ्वी विज्ञान राज्य मंत्री अश्विनी कुमार ने कहा कि १२वीं पंचवर्षीय योजना के अंतर्गत इस प्रणाली के विकास की योजना बनाई गई जो ग्लेशियरों की स्थिति पर नजर रखेगी और जलवायु परिवर्तन के विभिन्न कारणों की जांच करेगी। उन्होंने पृथ्वी विज्ञान मंत्रालय के नौवे स्थापना दिवस पर वैज्ञानिकों और कर्मचारियों को आज पुरस्कार प्रदान करते हुए यह बात कही। बाद में उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार मॉनसून में कमी होने पर आपात योजना के लिए तैयार है।अगस्त तक पता लगेगा कि बारिश कहीं पर कितनी हुई है। मगर जो, जो कंटनजेसिब प्लान की जरूरत है आवश्यकता है। फोड गेंस की क्या वेलीवेलिटी है। स्टोरिज कैसी है। इम्पोट करने की जरूरत पड़ेगी। इनसबटिप्लान सरकार ने पूरी तरह से सुनिश्चित किए हैं। प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय खुद इसको मॉनीटर कर रहा है।
कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष सोनिया गांधी ने अपने संसदीय निर्वाचन +क्षेत्र, रायबरेली में महात्मा गांधी राष्ट्रीय ग्रामीण रोजगार गारंटी अधिनियम,- मनरेगा में महिलाओं की कम भागीदारी पर चिंता व्यक्त की है। रायबरेली +क्षेत्र की दो दिन की यात्रा समाप्त करते हुए उन्होंने अपने प्रतिनिधियों से स्थानीय लोगों के साथ हुई बैठक में उठाए गए मुद्दों पर ध्यान देने को कहा। प्रतिनिधियों ने उस क्षेत्र की विभिन्न समस्याओं की चर्चा की और उनके समाधान के लिए श्रीमती सोनिया गांधी से मदद की मांग की। उन्हें बताया गया कि मनरेगा के तहत सौ दिन का रोजगार पर्याप्त नहीं है।

ब्रिटेन में मेनचेस्टर क्राउन अदालत ने भारतीय छात्र अनुज बिड़वे की हत्या के अभियुक्त ब्रिटिश नागरिक किआरन स्टेपलटन को ३० वर्ष की कैद की सजा सुनायी है। अदालत ने अनुज बिडवे की नृशंस हत्या के मामले में २१ वर्षीय किआरन स्टेपलटन को कल दोषी ठहराया था।२३ वर्षीय अनुज बिडवे लैनकेस्टर यूनिवर्सिटी में माइक्रो इलैक्टॉनिक्स का छात्र था। पिछले वर्ष २६ दिसम्बर को उसकी गोली मार कर हत्या कर दी गई थी।

श्रीलंका के अधिकारियों द्वारा रिहा किये गये २३ मछुआरों को श्रीलंका के तलाईमन्नार से पांच नौकाओं मे आज दोपहर बाद भारत के लिए रवाना कर दिया गया है। इस बात की पुष्टि जाफना के काउंसिल जनरल श्री महालिंगम ने की। आशा की जा रही है कि रिहा किये गये मछुआरे मध्य रात्रि तक मंडपम पहुंच जाएंगे और अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय समुद्री सीमा पर भारतीय तटरक्षक बल को सौप दिये जाएंगे।----
भारत और इण्डोनेशिया ने दोहरे कराधान से बचने और आयकर की चोरी रोकने के एक समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किये हैं। आज नई दिल्ली में विदेशमंत्री एस एम कृष्णा और भारत यात्रा पर आए इण्डोनेशिया के विदेशमंत्री मार्ती नतालेगावा ने इस समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किये।बाद में दोनों विदेश मंत्रियों ने संयुक्त संवाददाता सम्मेलन में कहा कि दोनों पक्षों के बीच बातचीत बहुत लाभकारी रही और उन्होंने व्यापार और वाणिज्य सहित सभी आपसी संबंधों की समीक्षा की।

भारत और बंगलादेश दोहरे कराधान से बचने के समझौते में संशोधन, स्वास्थ्य क्षेत्र में सहयोग और लघु विकास परियोजनाओं के अमल पर समझौता ज्ञापनों पर हस्ताक्षर करने के लिए तैयारी कर रहे हैं। संशोधन को अंतिम रूप दे दिया गया है और जल्द ही दोनों देश इस पर हस्ताक्षर करेंगे। इन मुद्दों पर मंगलवार को नई दिल्ली में दोनों देशों के विदेश सचिवों की बैठक में चर्चा हुई थी।----
चीन में हेबेई प्रांत में बाओडिंग इलाके में बाढ़ के कारण कम से कम २६ लोग मारे गए हैं और २० अन्य लापता बताए गए हैं। इस क्षेत्र में १९६३ के बाद से ये सबसे भीषण बाढ़ कही जा रही है। आठ लाख से ज्यादा लोगों पर बाढ़ का असर पड़ा है और ३८ हजार हेक्टेयर भूमि में फसलें बर्बाद हो गई हैं। इससे ७० अरब युआन की आर्थिक हानि का अनुमान लगाया गया है।---
उत्तर प्रदेश में बिजनौर जिले के एक गांव में एक स्कूल की छत ढहने से छह छात्रों की मृत्यु हो गई हैं। पुलिस ने बताया कि जलीलपुर गांव के मंशा देवी जूनियर हाई स्कूल में घटना के समय कक्षा में तीस छात्र मौजूद थे तभी प्रथम तल के बरामदे का स्लैब ढह गया। सभी घायल विद्यार्थियों को अस्पताल में दाखिल करा दिया गया है जिनमें दो की हालत गंभीर बताई गई है।

The Centre today rushed two teams of doctors and nurses to the riot-hit regions of Assam. These teams will support the State government's efforts to provide relief and immediate medical help to the people in the relief camps. Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth reviewed the relief and medical arrangements for the victims of voilence. During a video conference with Assam Chief Secretary Naba Kumar Das, he also reviewed arrangements to ensure that food and other supplies were available in adequate measures.
The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will visit the violence hit Kokrajhar district of Assam tomorrow, to review the steps taken to control the situation and measures taken by the Government for relief and rehabilitation. Dr. Singh is also likely to visit two relief camps. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will accompany the Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, the situation is limping back to normalcy in the violence hit districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri. Talking to newsmen in Guwahati today, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that there are no reports of any fresh incidents except for the two cases in Baksa district in the last 48 hours.
Assam government appeals all not be panic by rumour being spread by miscreants. Meanwhile the death toll has mounted to 48. Night curfew continues in the violence hit districts as a precautionary measure. 13 columns of Army, Assam Police and 65 companies of Para-military forces are being deployed to maintain law and order situation. Three lakh, 92 thousand people are being sheltered at 270 relief camps. Drinking water, baby food,sanitation alongwith relief materials are being provided at the relief camp. The Delhi High Court today said that the DNA test confirms that Congress leader N D Tiwari is the biological father of a Delhi-based youth, Rohit Shekhar. Declaring the result of the DNA test in the open court today, Justice Reva Khetrapal said, as per the report, Mr. Tiwari is the biological father of Rohit Shekhar and Ujjwala Sharma is the biological mother. The test was conducted at a Hyderabad-based laboratory.
After losing the paternity suit against him, Congress veteran N D Tiwari today said that an issue should not be made out of the episode and that he had the right to live on his own terms but bore no grudge against his biological son, Rohit Shekhar.

India and Indonesia today signed an agreement for avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income. The agreement was signed by the visiting Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa and his Indian Counterpart S.M Krishna at Hyderabad house in New Delhi this afternoon.
Addressing the Joint Press conference along with his visiting Indonesian counterpart, External Affairs Minister S.M Krishna said both countries are also hopeful of achieving the trade target of 25 billion US Dollars by 2015.

A Briton found guilty of murdering Indian student Anuj Bidve last year, was today sentenced for life, with a minimum term of 30 years before he can be considered for parole. The Manchester Crown Court yesterday found 21-year-old Kiaran Stapleton guilty of killing Bidve. 23-year-old Bidve, was studying Micro-electronics at Lancaster University and was walking to the Boxing Day sales with eight friends when he was shot dead on December 26 last year.

Congress President and UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi today expressed anxiety over lesser participation of women in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, MGNREGA in her Lok Sabha constituency, Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress President came to Rae Bareli yesterday and announced national highway projects worth 1,800 crore rupees besides some other projects for the state. The Lucknow-Rae Bareli road is to be converted into four lanes at a cost of 600 crore rupees.

The 23 Indian fishermen who were released by Sri Lankan authorities today set sail for India this afternoon in their five trawlers from Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka. This was confirmed by the Consul General for Jaffna, Mr Mahalingam. Our correspondent has filed this report:
The 23 Indian fishermen , who sailed for India this afternoon in their five trawlers from Thalaimannar will be handed over to the Indian Coast Guards at the International Maritime boundary Line (IMBL) by the Sri Lankan Navy.They are expected to reach Mandapam near Rameshwaram late tonight. The release of these fishermen was expedited , after External Affairs Minister S M Krishna urged the Sri Lankan government for their early release on humanitarian grounds. Both sides however have maintained that fishing is essentially a livelihood issue and fishermen are to be dealt humanely.

The Railways has decided to extend the free rail travel facility to Arjuna awardee sportspersons in Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains. Earlier, the complimentary card passes of Arjuna awardees was only valid for travel in the 1st and 2nd Class AC in mail and express trains. However, the facility is not available in Duronto trains and Metro Railway.The said Pass entitles the Arjuna Awardee Sportspersons life-long free travel for self only.

More than three crore smart cards have been issued under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, RSBY. The welfare scheme is presently being implemented in 25 States and Union Territories. The scheme under the Ministry of Labour and Employment aims to provide protection to BPL households from financial liabilities arising out of health shocks that involve hospitalization. Beneficiaries under RSBY are entitled to hospitalization coverage of up to 30,000 rupees for most of the diseases that require hospitalization. Coverage extends to five members of a family including the head, spouse and up to three dependents of a household.

The CBI has registered a case on alleged graft against former Vice Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University for permitting two universities to run distance learning courses in violation of norms. The CBI has alleged that Pillai, during his tenure as VC of IGNOU, allowed Sikkim Manipal University and Punjab Technical University to run distance learning courses in violation of laid down procedures. Pillai has been booked under charges of Prevention of Corruption Act, abuse of official position and criminal conspiracy.

At least six children were killed and eight injured when the roof of a junior high school collapsed in Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh. At least 30 children were in the classroom when the slab of the varandah on the 1st floor collapsed. All the injured students have been admitted to hospital where two of them are reported to be critical.

Mumbai’s special MCOCA court today granted bail to journalist Jigna Vora, an accused in the J Dey murder case. Special MCOCA court Judge S M Modak granted bail to Jigan Vora on a surety of one lakh rupees after observing that she had no criminal antecedents. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, TRAI, today issued directions to telecom service providers for delivering broadband services in a transparent manner by providing adequate information to broadband consumers about various plans and Fair Usage Policy, FUP. An official release said, the service providers have been asked to ensure that speed of broadband connection is not reduced below the minimum speed specified and provide alert to consumers when their data usage reaches 80 per cent.

At the London Olympics today, the Indian men's Archery team finished at the bottom of the heap in the ranking round. In the event held at the Lord's Cricket Ground, the team finished 12th and last. The trio of Jayanta Talukdar, Tarundeep Rai and Rahul Banerjee combined for a score of 1969 points.
In the women's section, India's Deepika Kumari finished at the 8th spot in individual ranking round. L. Bombayla Devi was placed 22nd, while Chekrovolu Swuro ended up in the 50th position. In the team ranking event, the women fetched the 9th place.
