President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil said that India is committed to move forward on the path of peace, development and progress through democracy while also protecting the sanctity of institutions established by the Constitution. Addressing the commemorative function on the 60th anniversary of Parliament held last evening in the Central Hall, the President  said, as the world' largest democracy, India can be proud that since winning freedom and adopting a Constitution, the country has continuously walked the path of democracy. She, however, pointed out that the big challenge is to proceed towards being a vibrant and healthy democracy.
Democracy can survive, flourish and grow when there is respect for all stakeholders, and for differing opinions and where institutions of democracy are functioning in harmony in general. Whether it is the Legislatures, the Judiciary, the Executive or the citizens or the media, they have a role to play but with responsibility and they must uphold the Constitution as well as the rule of law.
The President said, Parliament is the repository of the will of the people. She said people's growing aspirations and expectations need to be translated into policy decisions and necessary legislations.
Speaking on the historic occasion, Vice President Mohd. Hamid Ansari called for a collective resolve to restore the majesty of Parliament.
New imperatives propel us. We do need to respond meaningfully to awakened expectation of a new generation in a changing world.  Sixty years is a good time to assess the working of Parliament in two critical areas of its functioning: ensuring accountability and oversight of the executive and deliberation and law making.
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh urged for reviving the tradition of reasoned and constructive debate in Parliament on the issues of the day.
It is the Members of Parliament who will individually and collectively determine how effectively Parliament represents the aspirations of the people and guides the destiny of our country. Let us pledge to work together to build a united, secure and prosperous country that holds its head high in the wider comity of nations.
The Prime Minister called for firmly rejecting those who would mock the institutions of our democracy that have developed over decades of experiences.
Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said, the abiding faith of the people of India in parliamentary democracy has enabled us to successfully complete Sixty Years of our journey.

The CBDT, subsequently has issued formal orders to all its investigation units across the country, to begin a comprehensive financial probe of these telecom firms with retrospective effect from 2008.

The aircraft of private airlines of Agni Air 9 N AIG carrying eighteen passengers and three members of crew was heading towards Jomsom from Pokhara. The dead include the pilot and co-pilot. Indian Embassy spokesperson Apoorva Srivastava gives the details.
"Till now, the information is that there are seven survivors out of  which three are Indian, two young children, four and eight year old, who are absolutely fine and the third Indian is a 45 years old gentleman, who is seriously injured and he is undergoing medication right now. Reports said, the plane could not land due to technical glitch and was returning to Pokhara when the front part of the plane hit a cliff. The strike by Air India pilots entered the seventh day today. Air India spokesman said that 14 international flights from Delhi and Mumbai have been cancelled today.
The pilots, who are on strike since Tuesday, are not ready to relent from their stand until their demands are met. They have also refused to accept Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh's call to come to the dialogue table after withdrawing their strike.
20 international flights were cancelled yesterday. Hundreds of passengers were stranded following the flight cancellations. The crisis further worsened  with airline's executive pilots coming out in support of striking pilots, asking the management to revoke the sack orders and hold immediate negotiations to end the impasse. The striking pilots while stating that they were ready for talks showed no signs of returning to work, leaving passengers fretting with holiday schedules going haywire.

He, however, clarified that his family member had an investment of one lakh eighty thousand rupees in a Chennai based consulting firm. Alleging that the opposition is making wild allegations, the minister said they were free to check the balance sheets of the company in question. Raising the issue, the leader of the opposition Arun Jaitley said the FIPB clearance was highly doubtful.

Political crisis in Karnataka has further deepened with rebel  BJP  leader and former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa saying that he will announce his future political course by this evening.  Our correspondent reports that he has been toying with the idea of quitting the party.
"The political climate in Karnataka remains cloudy with Yeddyurappa setting up deadline for BJP national leaders to replace Chief Minister Sadanand Gowda. He held parleys with BJP MLAs royal to him in the morning. Thereafter, he set a deadline till four in the afternoon. He told reporters that his next political move will be announced in the press conference at 4 o' clock today. It is believed that some 40 legislatures loyal to Yeddyurappa have handed over their resignation letters to him to express their solidarity. The State Party President K S Eeshwarappa has, however, expressed hope that Yeddyurappa will not take any drastic step. On previous occasions too, Yeddyurappa had used threat to leave BJP while pressing for his demands. It is indeed ironical that Sadanand Gowda who was elected as legislative party leader with the support of Yeddyurappa is now on his wrong side. Sudhindra, AIR NEWS, Bangalore."

Mr Mukherjee said, allegations have been made that the then Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had delayed the proposal of Global Communication Services Holdings Limited, Mauritius to acquire 73.99 per cent equity in Aircel Limited in order to benefit certain persons. He said the ministries and departments concerned took the normal time of four to six weeks to offer their comments. Mr. Mukherjee also said, there is no scope for any misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the contents of both the letters of approval issued in 2006.
Earlier,  Home Minister  P. Chidambaram categorically denied that any  member of his family  owned any share in any telecom company at any point of time directly or indirectly.
Responding to opposition allegations, Mr. Chidambaram denied that there was any delay in giving Foreign Investment Promotion Board  (FIPB) clearance to Aircel in 2006.
