उच्चतम न्यायालय ने विदेशों में बैंकों में काला धन जमा होने पर चिन्ता व्यक्त की है। उसके अनुसार हो सकता है कि यह धन, हथियारों के सौदों और नशीले पदार्थों की तस्करी से जमा हुआ हो। उच्चतम न्यायालय ने सरकार से यह बताने को कहा है कि जिन लोगों और कम्पनियों ने विदेशों में खाते खोले हैं उनके खिलाफ क्या कार्रवाई की गई है। न्यायालय की पीठ ने सरकार को निर्देश दिया कि वह अगले बृहस्पतिवार तक इस बारे में उत्तर दे। न्यायालय ने एक याचिका पर केन्द्र सरकार, रिजर्व बैंक और मुख्य सर्तकता आयुक्त को नोटिस भी जारी किये हैं। उसने सरकार से कहा है कि वह केवल कर चोरी के पहलू तक ही अपनी जांच को सीमित न रखे बल्कि वह काले धन के स्रोतों का भी पता लगाये।

भारतीय जनता पार्टी प्रवक्ता रविशंकर प्रसाद ने मांग की कि सरकार को स्विस बैंकों में काले धन से संबंधित दोहरे कराधान से बचाव संबंधी समझौते का खुलासा करना चाहिए। कांगे्रस प्रवक्ता शकील अहमद ने कहा कि देश की जनता के साथ साथ सरकार भी चाहती है कि विदेशी बैकों में जमा काला धन भारत वापस लाया जाये। उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार के प्रयासों से ही करीब तीन खरब ४० अरब रूपये की चोरी का पता चला और उसे भारत से बाहर भेजे जाने से रोका जा सका।

केंद्रीय सतर्कता आयोग ने केंद्र सरकार के २२६ अधिकारियों को भारी दंड देने की सिफारिश की है। इनमंें संचार विभाग के पचास, केंद्रीय उत्पाद और सीमा शुल्क विभाग के ३६, रेल मंत्रालय और अन्य सेवाओं के २३ अधिकारी शामिल हैं। सरकारी विज्ञप्ति के अनुसार आयोग ने पिछले महीने उसके पास सलाह के लिए भेजे गये ८०४ मामलों का निपटारा कर दिया है। इनमें से ६६७ शिकायतें आवश्यक कार्रवाई के लिए भेजी गयी थीं, जबकि ४८ शिकायतें जांच और रिपोर्ट के लिए भेजी गयी थीं। कुछ विभागों में तकनीकी जांच के बाद आयोग ने दो करोड़ ७८ लाख रूपये की वसूली भी की है।

सरकार ने डीजल के मूल्य से नियंत्रण हटाने की संभावना से इंकार किया है। पेट्रोलियम मंत्री जयपाल रेड्डी ने कहा कि ऐसा करना न तो राजनीतिक रूप से और न ही व्यवहारिक रूप से संभव है। उन्होंने बताया कि सरकार ने मिट्टी के तेल में मिलावट और उसकी चोरी रोकने के लिए कई फैसले लिये हैं। इनमें अगले छह महीनों में सुधरी हुई मार्कर प्रणाली फिर से लागू करना शामिल है। इसके अलावा तेल टैंकरो की आवाजाही पर नजर रखने के लिए उनमें जी पी एस प्रणाली लगाना और आनलाइन सूचना प्राप्त करना शामिल है।

इस प्रणाली में यदि कोई ट्रक किसी गैर निर्धारित प्वाइंट पर तय समय यानी १०-१५ मिनट से अधिक देर तक रूकता है उसे समय का उल्लंघन माना जाएगा। यदि ट्रक गलत मार्ग पर जाएगा तो इसे भी जीपीएस में भी नोट किया जाएगा। इसे मार्ग का उल्लंघन माना जाएगा।

श्री रेड्डी ने महाराष्ट्र के नासिक जिले में अतिरिक्त जिला मजिस्टे्रट यशवंत सोनावणे को किरोसीन माफिया द्वारा कथित रूप से जिंदा जलाये जाने के मद्दे नजर स्थिति का जायजा लेने के लिए आज बैठक बुलाई थी।

इस बीच, श्री सोनावणे की हत्या के सिलसिले में ११ लोगों को गिरफ्तार किया गया है। तेल कंपनियों ने श्री सोनावणे के परिवार को २५ लाख रूपये की सहायता देने का फैसला किया है। श्री सोनावणे की हत्या के विरोध में महाराष्ट्र में अस्सी हजार से अधिक राजपत्रित अधिकारियों ने आज काम रोक दिया। इन अधिकारियों ने मुख्यमंत्री पृथ्वी राज चव्हाण से भी मुलाकात की, जिन्होंने इस घटना की जाचं का आश्वासन दिया है।

महाराष्ट्र में आज अधिकारियों ने तेल मिलावट करने वाले माफिया पर करीब दो सौ जगहों पर छापे मारे। कानून और व्यवस्था के अतिरिक्त महानिदेशक के पी रघुवंशी ने मुम्बई में बताया कि छापों के दौरान अभी तक एक सौ अस्सी से ज्यादा लोगों को गिरफ्‌तार किया जा चुका है।

सरकार ने उच्चतम न्यायालय को बताया है कि भ्रष्टाचार के मामले में मुख्य सतर्कता आयुक्त पी० जे० थॉमस के खिलाफ चार्जशीट दाखिल किये जाने और उन पर मुकदमा चलाने के लिए केरल सरकार द्वारा दी गई मंजूरी के बारे में सम्बद्ध उच्च स्तरीय चयन समिति को जानकारी नहीं दी गई। महाधिवक्ता गुलाम ई० वाहनवती ने आज मुख्य न्यायाधीश एस० एच० कापड़िया की पीठ के सामने यह बात कही।

भारतीय जनता पार्टी की वरिष्ठ नेता सुषमा स्वराज ने आरोप लगाया है कि केंद्रीय सतर्कता आयुक्त की नियुक्ति के बारे में उच्चतम न्यायालय में अटार्नी जनरल का बयान गलत है। उन्होंने कहा कि केन्द्रीय सतर्कता आयुक्त के पद पर श्री पी. जे. थॉमस की नियुक्ति के बारे में एतराज इस बात को लेकर है कि श्री थॉमस के खिलाफ भ्रष्टाचार के एक मामले में आरोप पत्र दाखिल है और केरल सरकार ने उन पर मुकदमा चलाने की अनुमति दे रखी है।

आज के इटोरनी जनरल बयान के बाद मैंने यह तय किया है। मैं सुप्रीम कोर्ट में अपना हलफनामा पेश करूंगी। सुप्रीम कोर्ट को सच्चाई से अवगत कराऊंगी और बताऊंगी की मैंने स्वयं यह मामला उठाया था और प्रधानमंत्री और गृहमंत्री को बताया था कि उनके खिलाफ केश पेंडिंग है तो सरकार कैसे कह सकती है कि सरकार अंधेरे में थी।

मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी ने कहा है कि उच्चतम न्यायालय में सरकार का यह हलफनामा समझ से परे है। पार्टी नेता सीताराम येचुरी ने कहा कि जो लोग इस मामले से जुड़े हैं, उन्हें सच्चाई बयान करनी चाहिए।

कांगे्रस प्रवक्ता शकील अहमद ने इस विवाद से किनारा करते हुए कहा कि यह मामला सरकार और न्यायालय के बीच का है।

स्वाभाविक रूप से सरकार के जो लॉ ऑफिसर है। सरकार के विधि के जो जानकार है। वो अलेबुल सुप्रीम कोर्ट के सामने सरकार का पक्ष रखेंगे। यह मामला सरकार और सुप्रीम कोर्ट के बीच का है। हम उम्मीद करते हैं कि सरकार जो जानकारियां सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने मांगी है। वो सुप्रीम कोर्ट को उपलब्ध करायेगी।

इराक में बगदाद के शुला जिले में आज एक विस्फोट में ६५ लोग मारे गये और ७८ घायल हो गये। इराक की समाचार एजेंसी ने खबर दी है कि बगदाद के उत्तर-पश्चिम में रूट साठ इलाके में एक ज+नाजे+ को निशाना बनाया गया। हमारे संवाददाता ने पुलिस सूत्रों के हवाले से बताया कि मरने वालों में ज्यादातर वे लोग थे जो जनाजे में भाग ले
रहे थे।

कार बम धमाका बगदाद के सिया इलाके में एक तंबू के बाहर हुआ जिसमें बड़ी संख्या में लोग एक शोक सभा के लिए इकट्ठा थे। घायलों के निकट के अस्पतालों में ले जाया गया और घटनास्थल पर शांति कायम करने के लिए सैनिकों की सहायता लेनी पड़ी। क्योंकि गुस्साई भीड़ ने पुलिस पर पत्थरों से हमला कर दिया। इराक में सिया समुदाय को निशाना बनाते हुए यह ताजा हमला है। पिछले हफ्‌ते करबला में सिया... सियासियों पर हुए हमलों में ५७ लोग मारे गए थे। ईराकी सुरक्षा विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि आतंकवादी सिया समुदाय के लोगों को निशाना बनाकर इराक से अमेरिकी सैनिकों की इस वर्ष के अंत तक पूर्व वापसी से पहले देश में साम्प्रदायिक तनाव भड़काना चाहते हैं।

भारत ने कहा है कि पाकिस्तान ने आतंकवाद पर काबू पाने के लिएं पर्याप्त उपाय नहीं किए हैं, और इससे उसका भी नुकसान हो रहा है। विदेश सचिव निरूपमा राव ने अफगानिस्तान से आये पत्रकारों से बातचीत में आज नई दिल्ली में कहा कि पाकिस्तान में ऐसे लोग हैं, जिन्हें लगता है कि आतंकवाद से उनके देश के हित पूरे होते हैं। श्रीमती राव ने २६-११ के हमलों के सिलसिले में जुटाये गये सबूतों का जिक्र किया, जिनमें पाकिस्तान स्थित आतंकी गिरोहों के शामिल होने की बात सामने आई है।

नेपाल के राष्ट्रपति राम बरन यादव भारत की दस दिन की यात्रा के पहले चरण में आज कोलकाता पहुंचे। वहां शांति निकेतन जायेंगे। यात्रा के दूसरे चरण में वे दिल्ली में राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा देवीसिंह पाटिल, उपराष्ट्रपति , प्रधानमंत्री , अन्य वरिष्ठ मंत्रियों और लोकसभा तथा राज्यसभा में विपक्ष के नेताओं से भी मिलेंगे और आपसी हितों पर विचार-विमर्श करेंगे।

खाद्य मुद्रास्फीति में लगातार दो सप्ताह गिरावट आने के बाद, १५ जनवरी को समाप्त हुए सप्ताह में दशमलव शून्य पांच प्रतिशत की मामूली वृद्धि दर्ज की गई और यह १५ दशमलव पांच सात प्रतिशत हो गई। ये वृद्धि सब्जियों खास तौर पर प्याज के दाम बढ़ने से हुई।

सरकार ने कहा है कि प्याज की कीमतों में जल्दी ही कमी होगी और ये पिछले साल के मूल्य पर स्थिर हो जायेंगी।

मध्य प्रदेश सरकार ने उन किसानों के लगान को मांफ करने का फैसला किया है, जिनकी रबी की फसल पाले और शीत लहर के कारण २५ प्रतिशत से अधिक नष्ट हो गयी है। लगान में यह मांफी वर्ष २०११ के लिए लागू होगी।

मुम्बई के शेयर बाजार में लगातार दूसरे दिन गिरावट दर्ज की गयी। मासिक डेरिवेटिव कांट्रेक्ट के आखिरी दिन मुद्रास्फीति और ब्याजदरों की आशंका बाजार पर हावी रही और सेंसेक्स २८५ अंक गिरकर १८ हजार ६८४ पर बंद हुआ, जो पिछले साढ़े चार महीने की सबसे नीची क्लोजिंग है। नेशनल स्टॉक एक्सचेंज का निफ्टी ८३ अंक गिरकर पांच हजार ६०४ पर पहुंच गया। उधर एशिया में चीन, जापान, दक्षिण कोरिया के बाजारों के सूचकांक दशमलव २ प्रतिशत से लेकर डेढ़ प्रतिशत तक बढ़े। इधर देश में डॉलर के मुकाबले रुपया १४ पैसे मजबूत हुआ। एक डॉलर का मूल्य ४५ रुपये ५७ पैसे रहा। दिल्ली के सरार्फा बाजार में सोना १८० रुपये महंगा होकर बीस हजार ३२० रुपये प्रति दसग्राम हो गया। उधर न्यूयॉर्क के मर्केंटाइल एक्सचेंज में कच्चे तेल का वायदा मूल्य २० सेंट गिरकर ८७ डॉलर १३ सेंट प्रति बैरल हो गया।

आस्ट्रेलियाई ओपन टेनिस टूर्नामेंट में लिएण्डर पेस और महेश भूपति डबल्स के फाइनल में पहुंच गये हैं। तीसरी वरीयता प्राप्त इस जोड़ी ने आज सेमीफाइनल में बेलारूस के मैक्स मिरनी और कनाडा के डेनियल नेस्टर की जोड़ी को ७-६, ४-६, ६-३ से पराजित किया। फाइनल में पेस और भूपति का मुकाबला वर्तमान चैंपियन अमरीका के ब्रायन बंधुओं बॉब और माइक से होगा।

खेल और युवा मामलों के मंत्रालय ने युवाओं के लिए रोजगार और कौशल विकास का कार्यक्रम तैयार किया है। इसकी शुरूआत पूर्वोत्तर क्षेत्र से होगी। खेल मंत्री अजय माकन ने बताया कि सरकार लक्ष्य युवाओं को विभाजनकारी, उग्रवादी और अलगाववादी ताकतों की विचारधाराओं के खिलाफ एक जीवंत बल के रूप में तैयार करना है।

भारत मानक ब्यूरो ने आज ऊर्जा की बचत को बढ़ावा देने और प्रकाश प्रदूषण को कम करने के लिए एक राष्ट्रीय प्रकाश कोड-एन.एल.सी. जारी किया। उपभोक्ता मामले के सचिव राजीव अग्रवाल ने कोड जारी करते हुए बताया कि कोड को स्वेच्छा से अपनाया जा सकेगा और यह कानूनी रूप से बाध्य नहीं होगा।

The Supreme Court today asked the  government to go after the sources of black money stashed in foreign banks. The Apex Court issued notices to the Centre, Reserve Bank of India and Chief Vigilance Commissioner on a petition seeking directions to the government to ratify the UN convention on corruption, which would help bring back the black money stashed abroad. A two Judge Bench asked the government to file report on action taken by it against people and firms that have stashed black money in foreign banks. The Apex court expressed concern that the black money stashed in banks abroad might have originated from arms deals, drug trafficking and smuggling and asked the government as to what action it had taken against individuals and firms having foreign accounts.  The Court directed the government to file its response by Thursday next.

The BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad demanded that the government should clarify the double tax avoidance agreement regarding the black money in Swiss Banks. Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed  pointed out that it is due to the efforts made by the government that mispricing of nearly 34 thousand crore rupees was detected and it was prevented from its transfer outside India. He also said that the law officers of the government will provide the information sought by the Supreme Court.

The Central Vigilance Commission, CVC has recommended major penalty against 226 officers. They include  50 from the Department of Communications, 36 from Central Board of Excise and  Customs, 23 from Ministry of Railways and from other services. According to an official release, recoveries to the tune of about 2.78 crore rupees were effected after the Commission conducted technical examination of some departments.

The government today told the Supreme Court that the issue of charge sheet against, Chief Vigilance Commissioner, P.J. Thomas, in a corruption case and sanction granted by Kerala government for his prosecution were not brought before the high-powered committee for selecting a candidate for the post. This was stated by Attorney General Goolam E Vahanvati before a bench headed by Chief Justice S H Kapadia, which wanted to know if the issue of sanction and the charge sheet against Thomas was presented before the three-member committee headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The BJP leader Mrs. Sushma Swaraj today alleged that the statement of Attorney General in the Supreme Court with regard to the CVC appointment is untrue. She asserted that  that her main objection to the appointment of Mr. P.J. Thomas as the Chief Vigilance Commissioner was that there was charge-sheet against him in a corruption case and sanction was granted by Kerala government for his prosecution. She asserted that she will take up the matter in the  Supreme Court.                                                                         

Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed refused to be drawn into the matter on the ground that the issue is subjudice.

The Government today ruled out deregulation of diesel prices. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, the Petroleum Minister Mr. Jaipal Reddy said that it is not politically and practically feasible. He said, the government has taken several decisions to check adulteration and pilferation of kerosene. They include reintroduction of an improved marker system within six months, introduction of GPS for tankers and online information.

Mr.Reddy had convened a high level meeting to take stock of the situation in the backdrop of the killing of Additional District Magistrate of Malegaon Yashwant Sonawane allegedly by oil mafia. Mr Reddy also suggested that the states use GPS-based vehicular tracking system like the one being used for vehicles transporting petrol and diesel to track the movement to plug leakages. The minister also said oil companies will provide online real-time information on loading of kerosene trucks, quantity and time of departure from their depots so that state authorities can check any route diversion. Mr Reddy strongly condemned Sonawane's killing while announcing exgratia payment to the bereaved family.

Authorities in Maharashtra today carried out raids at nearly 200 places, in a move to crack down on the oil adulteration mafia. Additional Director General, Law and Order, K P Raghuvanshi said in Mumbai that so far, more than 180 persons have been arrested during the raids. The action comes two days after Yashwant Sonawane, a Maharashtra cadre officer, was burnt alive allegedly by persons associated with the oil mafia at Manmad in Nashik district in broad daylight. Eleven persons have been arrested  in connection with the murder. The main accused Popat Shinde, suspected to have set Sonawane on fire, has been admitted in Mumbai J J hospital with severe burn injuries.

The death toll in today’s bombing in Iraq has reached to 65 while 100 others have been reported injured. The incident occurred in Baghdad's Shula district today. Many of the injured are in critical situation. National Iraqi News Agency quoting police sources says that explosion targeted a funeral ceremony in the  northwest of Baghdad. 

The car bomb exploded outside a tent where mourners were gathered for a funeral ceremony in the predominantly Shia neighbourhood of Shuala. Injured have been rushed to the hospitals and soldiers were sent to restore order as police was confronted by an angry mob that were throwing stones. The funeral attack was the latest targeting Shia community since a spate of car bombings last week killed 57 people outside the city of Karbala in southern Iraq.

In Afghanistan, security forces captured a Taliban key commander in Wardak province, 35 km west of capital Kabul.  A spokesman of the provincial administration said, security forces raided a Taliban hideout at Syed Khil village in Syedabad district early this morning and captured the commander, Mullah Nasir.

Hundreds of Egyptian protesters, including journalists, have been arrested in two days of unprecedented mass protests against President Hosni Mubarak's regime that left at least six people dead. Egypt witnessed a second 'day of anger' against the 30-year-rule of Mubarak yesterday as thousands of protesters took to streets, shouting slogans agaisnt Hosni Mubarak. In a Tunisia like situation downtown Cairo saw thousands of security personnel chase anti-government protesters as they tried to reassemble at Tahrir Square. There were pitched battles between the protesters and the police.

The Nepalese President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav has arrived on a ten-day visit to India. On the first leg of his visit, he reached Kolkata this evening and will visit Shanti Niketan during his stay there. Before be arrives in New Delhi on the second leg of his visit beginning on 31st of this month, Dr. Baran will visit Tirupati.

Falling for the second straight session, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange lost 285 points, or 1.5 percent, to close at an over four-and-a-half month low of 18,684, today, as inflation and interest rate fears continued to dog the market. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange dropped 83 points, or 1.5 percent, to 5,604. But stock markets in Japan, China, and South Korea gained between 0.2 percent and 1.5 percent. The rupee appreciated 14 paise, to 45.57 against the dollar.  Gold jumped 180 rupees, to 20,320 rupees per ten grams in Delhi. And crude oil futures declined 20 cents, to 87.13 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The Government says that prices of onions will soon come down and stabilize at last year's rates. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in New delhi today, Consumer Affairs Secretary Rajiv Aggarwal said that new Kharif Crop from Maharastra and Gujarat has hit the markets and prices will come down soon.

The Bureau of Indian Standards today released the National Lighting Code aimed to conserve energy and minimize light pollution. Releasing the Code, Consumer Affairs Secretary Rajiv Aggarwal said that efforts should be made to encourage affordable and efficient lighting techniques to provide maximum benefits to consumers. Mr Aggarwal said that the code will be voluntary and will not have any legal bindings.

A close aide of sacked CWG Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi today appeared before the CBI on directions of the Court. A Delhi court had  on Tuesday directed Sanjay Mahendroo to appear before the CBI today in the probe in an alleged cheating case relating to the mega sporting event. He was arrested on 15th November for his alleged role in financial bunglings in holding the Queen Baton's Relay in London in 2009 in the run up to the Games. He was granted bail by the court after CBI failed to file chargesheet against him within the stipulated 60 days.

Corporate lobbyist Niira Radia was today again questioned by the CBI in connection with the probe into the 2G spectrum allocation scam.  Though officials remained tightlipped about the line of questioning, sources said she was asked about funding of some telecom companies who were alloted the second generation spectrum from October 2007 to January 2008. Former Minister a Raja was also question by the CBI today.

The Supreme Court today directed the CBI to reveal the reasons for transferring the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case trial outside Gujrat. It asked CBI to furnish documents to the State government and other accused including former state minister Amit Shah in this regard. A two judge bench passed the direction while posting to February 23, hearing of the agency's plea for transfer of the case on the ground that the trial could not be held in a free and fair atmosphere in the present circumstances.

Indian veterans Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have entered the final of the Men's Doubles of the Australian open. In their semi-final, the reunited duo defeated the combination of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. In the final, the Indian-Express, as they are known, will clash with America's two-time defending champions Mike and Bob Bryan. The American duo beat Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer 6-3, 6-2. Menawhile, Swiss star Roger Federer bowed out of the Men's singles. Serbian third seed Novak Djokovic sensationally knocked out Federer in straight sets 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the semi-final. Earlier today, China's Li Na made history by becoming the first Asian woman to reach a major final. She defeated top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the semis. In the final on Saturday, Li will meet Kim Clijsters of Belgium who beat second-ranked Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-3.
