प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह ने स्वीकार किया है कि भ्रष्टाचार सबके लिये चिंता का विषय बन चुका है। उन्होंने कहा कि वे ज्यादा ईमानदार और प्रभावशाली सरकार देने के लिए निजी तौर पर काम करेंगे। नव वर्ष के अवसर पर अपने बधाई संदेश में प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि यह दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण है कि लोकपाल और लोकायुक्त विधेयक राज्यसभा में पारित नहीं हो सका। उन्होंने कहा कि यह समाधान का एक हिस्सा मात्र है और शासन प्रणाली में सुधार की जरूरत है। उन्होंने आजीविका सुरक्षा, शिक्षा, भोजन स्वास्थ्य और रोजगार, आर्थिक सुरक्षा, पारिस्थितिकीय सुरक्षा और राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा को मुख्य चुनौती बताया। प्रधानमंत्री ने इन चुनौतियों से निपटने के लिए लोगों से मिल कर काम करने का आग्रह किया। बढ़ते वित्तीय घाटे पर चिंता प्रकट करते हुए डॉक्टर सिंह ने कहा कि पेट्रोलियम उत्पादों की कीमतों को समयबद्ध रूप से तर्कसंगत बनाये जाने की जरूरत है।डॉक्टर सिंह ने विकास का ऐसा मार्ग तैयार करने की जरूरत पर जोर दिया जिससे ग्रीनहाउस गैसों के उत्सर्जन में कमी आए। उन्होंने राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करने के लिए रक्षा बलों के आधुनिकीकरण का आह्वान किया। जनता को शुभ और समृद्ध नववर्ष की मुबारकबाद देते हुए डॉक्टर मनमोहन सिंह ने देशवासियों से आग्रह किया कि राष्ट्र के समक्ष चुनौतियों से निपटने के लिए एकजुट होकर काम करें। उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार हर चुनौती से निपटने का हरसंभव प्रयास करेगी।

राजस्थान में आंदोलन कर रहे सरकारी डॉक्टरों ने हड़ताल समाप्त कर दी है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि राजस्थान आवश्यक सेवा अधिनियम -हटाये जाने और गिरफ्तार डॉक्टरों को रिहा करने के आदेश के बाद डॉक्टरों ने कल रात अपनी हड़ताल वापस ली।''हड़ताली सेवाएं डॉक्टरों ने हड़ताल समाप्त करने का फैसला कर लोगों को नये साल का तोहफा दिया है। सेवारत चिकित्सक संघ के अध्यक्ष डॉक्टर जी.डी. महेश्वरी और महासचिव डॉक्टर नसरीन भारती ने ऊर्जा मंत्री डॉक्टर जीतेन्द्र सिंह के साथ मध्य रात्रि को जयपुर में हुई बैठक के बाद हड़ताल समाप्त करने का ऐलान किया। इससे पहले मुख्यमंत्री अशोक गहलोत की अध्यक्ष्ता में हुई उच्चस्तरीय बैठक में रेसमा हटाने और गिरफ्तार हड़ताली डॉक्टरों को रिहा करने का फैसला भी किया गया। उनके निलम्बन और बर्खास्तगी के बारे में विचार करने के लिए इस पांच सदस्यों की कमेटी बनाने का निर्णय भी हुआ। राज्य के सेवारत डॉक्टर २१ दिसम्बर से वेतन में समानता और समयबद्ध पदोन्नती की मांग को लेकर हड़ताल पर थे। प्रेम भारती आकाशवाणी समाचर जयपुर।''

आंध्र प्रदेश सरकार ने राज्य की सरकारी सेवाओं में शामिल होने की अधिकतम आयुसीमा बढ़ा दी है। मुख्यमंत्री एन. किरन कुमार रेड्डी ने इस फैसले को नए वर्ष का तोहफा बताते हुए कल शारीरिक रूप से विकलांग व्यक्तियों सहित सभी श्रेणियों के लिए आयु सीमा बढ़ाने की घोषणा की।मुख्यमंत्री कार्यालय से जारी विज्ञप्ति में कहा गया है कि सामान्य श्रेणी के व्यक्ति अब ३४ वर्ष के बजाय ३६ वर्ष की आयु तक सरकारी नौकरी में आवेदन कर सकेंगे। अनुसूचित जाति, अनुसूचित जनजाति और अन्य पिछड़ा वर्ग के लिए यह समयसीमा बढ़ाकर ४१ वर्ष कर दी गई है। शारीरिक रूप से विकलांग व्यक्तियों के लिए सरकारी सेवा में आवेदन करने की अधिकतम आयु सीमा मौजूदा ४४ वर्ष से बढ़ा कर ४६ वर्ष कर दी गई है।

केन्द्रीय गृहमंत्री पी. चिदम्बरम ने कहा कि वे दक्षिण-पूर्व महाराष्ट्र के नक्सल प्रभावित क्षेत्र गढ़चिरोली की स्थिति से खुश नहीं हैं। कल मुम्बई में श्री चिदम्बरम ने कहा कि गढ़चिरोली में केन्द्रीय सुरक्षा बलों की मौजूदगी के बावजूद नक्सलवाद की स्थिति चिन्ता का विषय है। गृह मंत्री ने कहा कि वह मुख्यमंत्री पृथ्वी राज चव्हाण से गढ़चिरौली की स्थिति पर विशेष ध्यान देने का अनुरोध करेंगे।-
निर्वाचन आयोग ने उत्तर प्रदेश के ऊर्जा मंत्री की राज्य के लोकायुक्त के प्रति कथित रूप से आपत्तिजनक टिप्पणियों के मामले में हाथरस के जिला मजिस्ट्रेट से रिपोर्ट मांगी है। मुख्य निर्वाचन अधिकारी उमेश सिन्हा ने बताया कि रिपोर्ट मिलने के बाद आयोग रामवीर उपाध्याय के खिलाफ कार्रवाई शुरु करेगा।-

दिल्ली में नववर्ष के आगमन पर जगह-जगह आतिशबाजी और समारोह हुये। हमारे दिल्ली संवाददाता ने बताया है कि लोगों ने नये वर्ष का स्वागत हर्षोल्लास के साथ किया।घडी ने जैसे ही मध्य रात्रि बीतने का संकेत दिया। दिल्ली में जनसमूह वर्ष २०१२ के स्वागत में उठ खड़ा हुआ। कुहासे के बीच पटाखे छोड़े जा रहे थे। सभी लोकप्रिय स्थलों पर भारी भीड़ जमा थी। उत्सव सवेरा होने तक चलता रहा। कोई अप्रिय घटना नहीं हुई। कनाट प्लेस उत्सव का मुख्य स्थल था। अधिकतर दुकानें खुली थी, दिल्ली पुलिस ने सुरक्षा के कड़े प्रबंध किये थे। सड़कों, होटलों और मॉलों में वाहनों की गहन जांच की गई। हर ओर हर्षोल्लास था। आकाशवाणी समाचार के लिए मैं शैलेन्द्र मोहन कुमार ।

जम्मू-कश्मीर में देश-विदेश के पर्यटकों की बड़ी संख्या में उपस्थिति के साथ नववर्ष की शुरूआत हुई, जिन्होंने विश्व प्रसिद्ध गुलमर्ग में नववर्ष का जश्न मनाया। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि वर्ष २०११ में घाटी में शांति का माहौल बनने से सुखद नववर्ष की आशा जगी है।अगर गुलमर्ग में नववर्ष प्रारंभ होने के अवसर पर कोई बर्फ मौजूद न थी फिर भी अब की बार इस विश्व पर्यटक स्थल पर पर्यटकों और स्थानीय लोगों ने नये वर्ष का जोरदार स्वागत किया। राज्य सरकार ने एक संगीत सम्मेलन और अभूतपूर्व और पटाखाबाजी का आयोजन किया था और पर्यटकों से बडे गुलमर्ग क़ड़ाके की ठंड में भी उत्सव का दृश्य पेश कर रही थी। वैसे भी २०११ के दौरान घाटी में शांति रहने के फलस्वरूप २०१२ के आगमन पर लोग शांति और प्रगतिकी नई आशाए लिये हुए हैं। वर्ष २०११ में १० लाख पर्यटकों ने कश्मीर घाटी का फेयर किया मुश्ताक अहमद तांत्रे आकाशवाणी समाचार श्रीनगर।

राजस्थान में सरकारी अस्पतालों में हड़ताली डॉक्टरों के काम पर लौट आने से चिकित्सा और स्वास्थ्य सुविधाएं सामान्य हो रही हैं। राज्य में सेवारत डॉक्टर पिछले ११ दिन से हड़ताल पर थे। स्वास्थ्य विभाग के प्रवक्ता के अनुसार अस्पतालों में ओपीडी सेवाएं सामान्य रूप से चल रही हैं और अस्पतालों में भर्ती मरीजों को भी राहत मिली है। सेवारत डॉक्टरों के संघ ने बिजली मंत्री डॉ० जितेन्द्र सिंह से बातचीत के बाद आधी रात को हड़ताल खत्म कर दी। राज्य सरकार द्वारा आवश्यक सेवा कानून लागू करने का फैसला वापस लेने और इस कानून के तहत गिरतार डॉक्टरों की रिहाई का आदेश जारी किये जाने के बाद हड़ताल वापस ली गई । सरकार, सेवारत डॉक्टरों की मांगों पर विचार के लिए पांच सदस्यों की समिति बनाने पर भी राजी हुई है।-------------
मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त एस.वाई कुरैशी ने कहा है कि निर्वाचन आयुक्तों को संरक्षण प्रदान करने की जरूरत है, ताकि उन पर किसी प्रकार का दबाव न हो। उन्होंने कहा कि इसके लिए संविधान में संशोधन किया जाना चाहिए। श्री कुरैशी ने, मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त पद पर सबसे वरिष्ठ निर्वाचन आयुक्त की ही पदोन्नति का समर्थन किया। श्री कुरैशी ने पीटीआई के साथ भेंटवार्ता में कहा कि दो निर्वाचन आयुक्तों को भी संवैधानिक दर्जा दिया जाना चाहिए, ताकि वे यह न महसूस करें कि वे परीक्षण पर हैं।-------------

जापान की राजधानी तोकयो और इसके आसपास के इलाकों में आज भूकंप के जोरदार झटके महसूस किये गये। इसे रिक्टर पैमाने पर सात मापा गया। भूकंप के कारण तोकयो में इमारतें हिलने लगीं। भारतीय समय के अनुसार भूकंप सुबह १० बजकर ५८ मिनट पर आया। इसका केंद्र तोकयो से पांच सौ ६० किलोमीटर दक्षिण में तोरिशिमा द्वीप के निकट तीन सौ ७० किलोमीटर की गहराई में था। जानमाल के नुकसान की फिलहाल कोई खबर नहीं है और त्सुनामी की चेतावनी भी जारी नहीं की गई है।-------------

The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has expressed concern over corruption, which has moved to the centre stage and vowed to personally work to provide an honest and more efficient government. In a New Year message, he said, it is unfortunate that the Lokpal and Lokayukta Bill could not be passed by the Rajya Sabha.
Dr. Singh, however, underlined that it is only one part of the solution and there is a need for reforms in systems of governance. The Prime Minister said that such a mechanism will increase transparency and reduce the scope of misgoverning. He added that the measures to curb corruption will take time to have full effect and urged the people to be patient. He identified key challenges as livelihood security, education, food, health and employment, economic security, energy security, ecological security and national security and urged the people to work together as a nation to address these challenges.
The Prime Minister said higher levels of production need more energy and it is high time to plan for a substantial growth in energy availability. He called for modernisation of defence forces to ensure national security. Wishing people a happy and prosperous New Year, he said that his government will do everything possible to ensure that every challenge is over come.

As the year 2011 came to a close, the roads in Goa were chocked with heavy vehicular traffic with thousands of tourists who arrived by their own vehicles trying to rush to their destinations, especially the beaches in North Goa. Traffic congestions were witnessed at many places in the state and police had a tough time streamlining the traffic, especially the roads that led to coastal areas namely Calangute, Baga and Anjuna. The police made elaborate arrangements for peaceful celebrations to mark the New Year. In Rajasthan, medical and health services in government hospitals are now coming back on the rails with the In-service doctors resuming their duties after an 11 day long strike. According to the Health Department spokesperson, the OPD in hospitals functioned normally and indoor patients also took a sigh of relief. Earlier at mid night last night, the In-service Doctor Association called off their strike after meeting the Power Minister Dr. Jitender Singh.
The decision was taken after the state government issued orders of lifting Rajasthan Essential Services Maintenance Act, RESMA, and release of doctors arrested under the Act. The government also agreed to constitute a five member committee to look into the demands of the In-service doctors and suspension and dismissal of doctors during the strike.

Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi has said, there is need for a Constitutional amendment to give protection to the Election Commissioners, ECs, so that they are not under any pressure. He also favoured automatic elevation of the senior-most EC to the post of Chief Election Commissioner, CEC. Mr. Quraishi told PTI in an interview that the two ECs who do not enjoy Constitutional protection under the law, be given the status as they should not feel they are on probation. A major 7.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Tokyo and surrounding areas today. Japan's Meteorological Agency said, the quake struck at 10.58 am IST but there were no immediate reports of damage or injury and no tsunami warning was issued.
Its epicentre was located near Torishima, an island about 560 kilometres south of Tokyo and was about 370 kilometres deep. The mid-afternoon quake swayed buildings in Tokyo but it did not disrupt the final of the Emperor's Cup football tournament underway at the National Stadium.

At least 50 people have been killed in south-eastern Nigeria in clashes between two rival ethnic communities. A spokesman for the Ebonyi state government said, police and troops were dispatched to quell the violence. He said, the clashes erupted yesterday between the Ezza and Ezilo people of Ishielu district, the two groups that are often in conflict. He said, the exact death toll cannot yet be determined.

Syrian opposition groups have signed a draft agreement which charts a democratic transition, should President Bashar al-Assad leave office. Representatives from the two main opposition groups, the Syrian National Council and the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria, say their draft agreement has been signed in Cairo. Foreign direct investment, FDI in India, has surged by 36 per cent to 23.68 billion US dollars during the January-October period last year. During January-October 2010, the country had attracted FDI worth 17.36 billion US Dollars. According to the Industry Ministry's latest data, the sectors that attracted maximum FDI during the nine-month period, include financial and non-financial services, telecom, housing, real estate & construction and power. In Jammu and Kashmir, focused attention is being paid by the state government to upgrade the infrastructure in core sectors for the benefit of common people, especially those living in remote and far flung areas. A report from our Jammu correspondent:
In Jammu and Kashmir the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch have received focused attention of the Government during the last three years and hitherto neglected areas of these twin border districts have witnessed massive development in almost every sphere though still a lot needs to be done in these areas. Most of the remote and inaccessible areas of these twin districts were without electricity but thanks to Centrally sponsored scheme of Rajeev Gandhi Grameen Yiduvitikaran Yojana (RGVVY) , many villages and hamlets have been provided electricity through this prestigious scheme. While Rs. 29 crores are being spent on the upgradation of electricity facilities in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch under the RGVVY scheme, the State government has further submitted a project proposal of Rs. 28 crore for central funding to extend electricity facility to the other left over villages and hamlets of these districts under the scheme. Besides 112 road projects, involving estimated cost of Rs. 149 crore have been taken up during last three years under state and centre schemes in the districts while execution of 37 road projects with a cumulative estimated cost of Rs. 120 crore have also been also taken up during the period under Prime Ministers Gram Sadak Yojana(PMGSY) even as 25 more road projects have been also submitted to centre for funding under PMGSY.R K RAINA, AIR NEWS, JAMMU.

In Assam, around 75 thousand BPL households have been covered in the first phase of Rajeev Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojna. Official sources said that almost 22 thousand villages in 23 districts have benefited from the programme. More from our correspondent:
Assam has set the record of covering highest number of BPL households among the north-eastern states. The second phase of rural electrification works have been started in 7 district and likely to be completed within a year. Assam Government has set up village monitoring and vigilance committee to look after the installation works. These committees are responsible for overall implementation of the programme in a particular area. State Electricity Board has also set up 32 new sub-stations and over 21 thousand transformer for the proper implementation of the scheme. Apart from it, step has also been taken to provide solar light in remote and inaccessible, like char and hilly areas, in subsidized rate where electrification is not being done so far. Vietnam has sentenced five men to death for smuggling heroin into the country from Cambodia. State media said, the men aged between 30 and 40, were condemned by a Ho Chi Minh City court after they were found guilty of trafficking a total of seven kilograms of the drug between 2001 and 2010. Three other men were sentenced to life, while a further six people received jail terms of between seven and 20 years, after a three-day trial.

A man was detained at an airport in the US state of Texas when he tried to carry explosives through security. Officials said, the man was stopped at Midland International Airport when explosives in military wrapping were found in his carry-on baggage as it went through an X-ray machine. The man had reportedly been on a family visit to relatives in the Midland area and was returning to a base in North Carolina when he was detained. He is being held by the FBI and the agency is conducting an investigation.

Tihar jail inmates will make their own blankets. This decision has been taken by the jail administration to cater to the growing demand of blankets in the jail. Jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta said that under the scheme, over 12 thousand prisoners will be provided good quality blanket. सरकार ने आर्थिक उदारीकरण के तहत एक महत्वपूर्ण फैसले में योग्य, पात्र विदेशी निवेशकों को भारत के शेयर बाजार में प्रत्यक्ष निवेश की अनुमति देने का फैसला किया है। नई दिल्ली में जारी सरकारी वक्तव्य में कहा गया है कि यह फैसला और अधिक निवेशकों से विदेशी निवेश आकर्षित करने और बाजार को अधिक स्थिर बनाने के उद्देश्य से लिया गया है। पिछले कुछ समय में घरेलू शेयर बाजार से काफी विदेशी पूंजी बाहर जाने के कारण रूपया कमजोर हुआ है।हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि पिछले वर्ष २७ सौ करोड़ रूपये मूल्य से अधिक की राशि विदेशी संस्थागत निवेशकों ने बाजार से निकाल ली थी। जिसके कारण पिछले महीने की १५ तारीख को, एक डॉलर के मुकाबले रूपये का मूल्य गिरकर ५४ रूपये ३० पैसे प्रति डॉलर हो गया।

मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त एस.वाई कुरैशी ने कहा है कि निर्वाचन आयुक्तों को संरक्षण प्रदान करने की जरूरत है, ताकि उन पर किसी प्रकार का दबाव न हो। उन्होंने कहा कि इसके लिए संविधान में संशोधन किया जाना चाहिए। श्री कुरैशी ने, मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त पद पर सबसे वरिष्ठ निर्वाचन आयुक्त की पदोन्नति का समर्थन किया। श्री कुरैशी ने पीटीआई के साथ भेंटवार्ता में कहा कि दो निर्वाचन आयुक्तों को भी संवैधानिक दर्जा दिया जाना चाहिए, ताकि वे यह न महसूस करें कि वे प्रशिक्षण पर हैं।------

आंध्र प्रदेश में आज पांच और लोगों की मौत हो जाने से जहरीली शराब कांड में मरने वालों की संख्या बढ़कर १४ हो गई है। कृष्णा जिले में मयलावरम के पास देशी शराब पीने से कल ९ लोगों की मौत हो गई थी। आज जो लोग मरे हैं, उनमें तीन महिलाएं भी हैं। मारे गए सभी लोग जनजातीय समुदाय के हैं। मयलावरम और विजयवाड़ा के अस्पतालों में भर्ती छह अन्य लोगों की स्थिति गंभीर बनी हुई है।राज्य सरकार ने घटना की न्यायिक जांच के आदेश दे दिये हैं। शराब के नमूने को रासायनिक जांच के लिए भेज दिया गया है। राज्य के आबकारी मंत्री ने इलाके के अपने विभाग के सर्किल इंस्पेक्टर और सब इंस्पेक्टर को निलंबित कर दिया है।

राजस्थान में सरकारी अस्पतालों में हड़ताली डॉक्टरों के काम पर लौट आने से चिकित्सा और स्वास्थ्य सुविधाएं सामान्य हो रही हैं। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि राज्य में सेवारत डॉक्टर पिछले ११ दिन से हड़ताल पर थे।सेवारत डॉक्टरों के ११ दिन पुरानी हड़ताल खत्म होने से आज सरकारी अस्पतालों में कामकाज तेजी से सामान्य हो रहा है। ओपीडी और अस्पताल में भर्ती मरीजों की देखभाल आज पहले की तरह हुई। सरकार ने भी अपना रूख लचीला करते हुए, रेशमा को हटाने और इस कानून के तहत गिरफ्तार डॉक्टरों रिहा करने के आदेश दिये, साथ ही उनकी मांगों पर विचार करने के लिए पांच सदस्यों की समिति बनाई गई है जो हड़ताल के दौरान डॉक्टरों के निलम्बन और बर्खास्तगी पर भी विचार करेगी।

राज्य में मौसम के अनुमानों के अनुसार पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश में कई स्थानों पर और पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश में कुछ स्थानों पर वर्षा होगी और गरज के साथ छींटे पड़ेंगे। मौसम विशेषज्ञों के अनुसार कुछ स्थानों पर ओले भी पड़ सकते हैं।
उत्तराखंड के ऊंचाई वाले स्थानों में बर्फबारी के कारण ठंड काफी बढ़ गई है। मौसम विभाग के अनुसार अगले चौबीस घंटों के दौरानं कहीं कहीं वर्षा और ऊपरी इलाकों में हल्की बर्फबारी हो सकती है।

The government has decided to allow Qualified Foreign Investors, QFIs, to directly invest in the Indian equity market, starting off the New Year on a liberalisation note. An official statement issued in New Delhi said, this has been done to widen the class of investors, attract more foreign funds and reduce market volatility and deepen the capital market.
The move comes against the backdrop of significant foreign capital outflows from the domestic equity market in recent times, which has resulted in rupee volatility. A QFI is an individual or group or association resident in a foreign country that is compliant with Financial Action Task Force standards of the government. QFIs do not include Foreign Institutional Investors or sub accounts.

Foreign direct investment, FDI in India, has surged 36 per cent to 23.68 billion US dollars during the January-October period last year. During January-October 2010, the country had attracted FDI worth 17.36 billion US Dollars. According to the Industry Ministry's latest data, the sectors that attracted maximum FDI during the nine-month period, include financial and non-financial services, telecom, housing, real estate & construction and power.

Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi has said, there is need for a Constitutional amendment to give protection to the Election Commissioners, so that they are not under any pressure. He also favoured automatic elevation of the senior-most EC to the post of Chief Election Commissioner, CEC. Mr. Quraishi told PTI in an interview that the two ECs who do not enjoy Constitutional protection under the law, be given the status as they should not feel they are on probation. The CEC said, he would be writing to the government on the issue.

Expressing concern at the high level of regional and inter and intra state disparities in agricultural production and productivity, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) feels India needs to invest more in agriculture and allied sectors. RBI also says, to improve agriculture and productivity, there is need for finding ways to surmount the existing constraints and step up productivity using finance as a tool.

In another attempt to bring back the black money stashed outside the country, India and Macau are to ink a double taxation avoidance agreement. This will facilitate the exchange of tax-related and banking information between the two and prevent tax evasion. Macau is one of the most well-known offshore financial centres and tax havens worldwide. The agreement will also help create a better investment climate for Indian businesses in Macau and vice-versa. Central Board of Direct Taxes Chairman M C Joshi has left for Macau to sign the treaty.

In Delhi, surveillance will be increased between Rajpath and Red Fort in the run up to Republic Day celebrations to thwart any possible terror strike. The entire CCTV coverage will also be linked to the Delhi Police Headquarters and monitored there by a dedicated team of officers.
Delhi Police officials said today, 162 CCTVs will be installed across the eight-km route of the Republic Day parade from Rajpath to Red Fort. The move comes against the backdrop of the terror attack outside the Delhi High Court on September 7th last year and the subsequent smashing of an Indian Mujahideen module by the Delhi Police.

Iran successfully test fired a medium-range surface-to-air missile today during navy war games taking place near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. According to the official news agency IRNA, this medium-range surface-to-air missile is equipped with the latest technology to combat radar-evading targets and intelligent systems which try to disrupt missile navigation.
Commodore Mahmoud Mousavi told IRNA that it was the first time Iran had tested the missile, which was domestically designed and built. The missile's launch and the war games are meant to show Iran's military capabilities at a time that the United States and other Western nations are increasing pressure over Tehran's nuclear programme.
In another development, Iran has announced that its scientists have produced the nation's first nuclear fuel rod, a feat of engineering the West doubted Tehran was capable of. Iran's atomic energy agency's website says the first domestically made rod has already been inserted into the core of Tehran's research nuclear reactor.

US President Barack Obama has suspended a big chunk of 1.1 billion dollar military aid to Pakistan. The suspension is part of a massive 662-billion dollar defence spending bill which President Obama signed despite what he called serious reservations about provisions regulating detention and prosecution of suspected terrorists.
The law seeks to suspend military aid to Pakistan under the category Pakistan Counter-insurgency Fund till Secretaries of State and Defence report to the Congress that Islamabad is making progress in the war on terror, particularly progress in strategies to counter manufacturing of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The bill also imposed tough new sanctions against Iran's central bank and financial sector, marking the sharpest economic confrontation between Washington and Tehran yet. Iran's chamber of commerce described the fresh US sanctions as unjustifiable.

At the end of 10 day registration process, 361 candidates are in the fray for 50 seats of the parliament. Meanwhile, a Kuwait court has scheduled the hearing on 5th January on a petition challenging the legal sanctity of the Kuwait Emir’s decision to dissolve the parliament . Leading Pakistani lawyer Asma Jahangir today quit as counsel for former envoy to the US, Husain Haqqani, in legal proceedings related to the memo scandal. She said, she had no confidence in the commission formed by the Supreme Court to probe the matter.
Jahangir alleged the judges of the Supreme Court were acting under the influence of the establishment. Jahangir, one of Pakistan's leading rights activist, said she had asked Haqqani to engage another lawyer to represent him in the apex court and the court-appointed commission.

Four security personnel were killed today and three more injured when their vehicle hit a landmine in the restive Balochistan province of southwest Pakistan. The personnel from the paramilitary Frontier Corps were escorting a convoy of a private energy company when the vehicle hit the landmine in Sui area, 400 km from the Balochistan capital of Quetta. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

India and Pakistan today exchanged the list of nuclear installations and facilities covered under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations between two countries.
It was done through diplomatic channels simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad. The Agreement, which was signed on December 31, 1988 and entered into force on January 27, 1991, provides that the two countries inform each other of nuclear installations and facilities to be covered under the Agreement on the first of January of every calendar year.

According to the Met department most of the places in Uttar Pradesh have received light to moderate rain while in some pockets hailstorm also occurred.

Over 500 revellers drove under the influence of alcohol in the national capital as they rang in 2012 and were challaned by police for drunken driving. However, there were no fatal accidents involving New Year celebrations. Talking to media persons in New Delhi today, Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) said a total of 504 people were prosecuted for drunken driving in the city during the new year celebrations.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has appealed to the militant outfits operating in the State to lay down arms and come for peace negotiations with the Government. He said no problem can be settled through violent means. He said the Government will put all its efforts to eliminate insurgency from the State this year. The Chief Minister was addressing a press conference at Guwahati this afternoon on the occasion of the New Year. Mr. Gogoi asked the people of the State and different organizations to stay away from giving bandh calls as it hampers development and hit normal life. He asked those organizations to take up their issues with the Government for amicable settlement. Mr. Gogoi stated his Government will accord high priority to mitigate the Brahmaputra river bank erosion problem in the New Year 2012.
