मुम्बई सत्र न्यायालय ने आज टेलीफोन आपरेटर दुष्कर्म मामले में सभी चार अभियुक्तों को उम्रकैद की सजा सुनाई है। अदालत ने कल २२ अगस्त को एक फोटो पत्रकार और ३१ जुलाई को एक टेलीफोन आपरेटर के साथ सामूहिक दुष्कर्म के मामले में पांच अभियुक्तों को दोषी ठहराया था। दुष्कर्म के ये मामले पिछले वर्ष मध्य मुम्बई की शक्ति मिल में हुए थे।

अदालत ने विजय जाधव, मोहम्मद अंसारी, मोहम्मद कासिम शेख को दोनों मामलों में दोषी पाया है। इन तीनों के अलावा अदालत ने सिराज खान को २२ अगस्त को हुए फोटो पत्रकार सामूहिक दुष्कर्म मामले में और मोहम्मद अशफाक शेख को ३१ जुलाई को हुए टेलीफोन आपरेटर सामूहिक दुष्कर्म मामले में दोषी पाया है।
 
पत्रकार के साथ गैंगरेप के मामले में सजा २४ मार्च को सुनाई जायेगी। मुंबई के शक्ति मील कंपाउंड में हुए सामूहिक ब्लात्कार के दोनों मामलों में न्यायालय ने पांच आरोपियों को दोषी करार दिया था। गौरतलब है कि दोनों मामलों में दो नाबालिकों को मिलाकर सात लोगों को गिरफ्तार किया गया था जिनमें से तीन लोग दोनों मामलों में शामिल हैं। दो नाबालिक आरोपियों के मामले की सुनवाई किशोर व न्याय बोर्ड कर रहा है। स्वीटी कोठारी, आकाशवाणी समाचार, मुंबई।

लोकसभा चुनाव के पहले चरण में असम की पांच और त्रिपुरा की एक सीट के लिए नामांकन पत्र भरने का आज आखिरी दिन है। नामांकन पत्रों की जांच कल की जायेगी। इन निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों में ७ अप्रैल को मतदान होगा।

हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि राज्य में तेजपुर, कालियाबोर, डिब्रूगढ़, लखीमपुर और जोरहाट में पहले चरण में मतदान होगा। इसमें ६४ लाख मतदाता अपने मताधिकार का प्रयोग कर सकेंगे।

मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त वी एस सम्पत आज लखनऊ में उत्तर प्रदेश के सभी जिलाधिकारियों और वरिष्ठ पुलिस अधिकारियों के साथ चुनाव तैयारियों की समीक्षा के लिए बैठक कर रहे हैं। निर्वाचन आयुक्त एच एस ब्रह्मा और नसीम जै+दी तथा आयोग के अन्य वरिष्ठ अधिकारी बैठक में मौजूद हैं। पूर्ण निर्वाचन आयोग चुनाव तैयारियों की समीक्षा के लिए राज्य के दो दिन के दौरे पर हैं।

हमारे लखनऊ संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि आयोग दोपहर बाद मुख्य सचिव जावेद उस्मानी और राज्य के मुख्य निर्वाचन अधिकारी उमेश सिन्हा तथा अन्य वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों के साथ भी बैठक करेगा। आयोग के अधिकारी कल राजनीतिक दलों के प्रतिनिधियों से मिले थे। भारतीय जनता पार्टी, बहुजन समाज पार्टी और कांग्रेस के नेताओं ने ऐसे अधिकारियों को हटाने की मांग की जो कथित रूप से सत्तारूढ दल के नजदीकी हैं।

पूर्व केन्द्रीय मंत्री और कांग्रेस नेता बूटा सिंह राजस्थान में जालौर संसदीय निर्वाचन क्षेत्र से समाजवादी पार्टी के टिकट पर चुनाव लड़ेंगे। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि बिहार के पूर्व राज्यपाल और राष्ट्रीय अनुसूचित जाति आयोग के पूर्व अध्यक्ष और आठ बार सांसद रहे बूटा सिंह जालौर से कांग्रेस उम्मीदवार के रूप में चार बार चुनाव जीते हैं। पहली बार वे वहां से १९८४ में चुने गये थे। २००९ के चुनावों के बाद उन्हें कांगे्रस से निकाल दिया गया था, लेकिन पार्टी ने राजस्थान विधानसभा के पिछले चुनावों के दौरान उनका निलम्बन समाप्त कर दिया था।

उत्तर प्रदेश में कैराना निर्वाचन क्षेत्र से राष्ट्रीय लोकदल के उम्मीदवार करतार सिंह भडाना और दो अन्य के खिलाफ आचार संहिता के उल्लंघन का मामला दर्ज किया गया है। इन पर चुनाव प्रचार के दौरान जमालपुर गांव में एक डांस पार्टी आयोजित करने का आरोप है। शामली जिले में बहुजन समाज पार्टी के उम्मीदवार कवर हसन और समाजवादी पार्टी के प्रत्याशी नाहिद हसन के खिलाफ भी आचार संहिता के कथित उल्लंघन के मामले दर्ज हुए हैं।

मध्य प्रदेश में प्रदेश कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष और खण्डवा लोकसभा निर्वाचन क्षेत्र से उम्मीदवार अरूण यादव के खिलाफ आचार संहिता के उल्लंघन का मामला दर्ज किया गया है। उन पर १२ अप्रैल को खरगौन जिले के झीरनिया में एक उत्सव के दौरान ढोल वालों को दो सौ रूपये बांटने का आरोप है।

राजस्थान के टौंक जिले में बीसलपुर बांध में एक नौका पलट जाने से आठ लोगों की मौत हो गयी और चार लोग घायल हो गए। तीन लोग लापता हैं। नौका में पन्द्रह लोग सवार थे।

मेघालय के पश्चिमी खासी पर्वतीय जिले में कल रात आए चक्रवाती तूफान में चार लोगों की मौत हो गयी और ४१ घायल हो गए। दस गांवों के एक सौ तिरानवें मकान पूरी तरह नष्ट होने से कई लोग बेघर हो गए हैं। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि घायलों को नोंगस्टोन और शिलांग के सिविल अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया है।
 
राहत और बचाव के कार्य जारी हैं। लेकिन डिप्टी कमीशनर एस.आर लिंगदोह के अनुसार कल रात चार राहत शिविर बनाए गए थे और कुछ आज बनाये जा रहे हैं। मेघायल सरकार ने आपदा से निपटने के लिए ५० लाख रूपये जारी किये हैं। इसके अलावा मृतकों के परिवारजनों को डेढ़ लाख रूपये की सहायता दी जायेगी। जिले के डिप्टी कमीशनर पहले ही १० लाख रूपये राहत और बचाव कार्यों के लिए जारी कर चुके हैं। क्षतिग्रस्त इलाकों में राहत के कार्यों में स्थानीय एनजीओ भी सहायता कर रहे हैं। जिला के बड़े अधिकारी नुकसान का जायजा लेने के लिए मौके पर पहुंच गए हैं। प्रशांत शर्मा, आकाशवाणी समाचार, शिलांग।

भारतीय प्रशासनिक सेवा के निलम्बित अधिकारी प्रदीप शर्मा ने गुजरात उच्च न्यायालय में अपील दायर करके राज्य में आतंकवाद विरोधी दस्ते द्वारा एक महिला आर्किटेक्ट की जासूसी की जांच और एफ आई आर दर्ज करने का अनुरोध किया है। श्री शर्मा के वकील के अनुसार उच्च न्यायालय में याचिका कल दायर की गई और इस पर अगले सप्ताह सुनवाई होने की उम्मीद है। याचिका में न्यायालय से आग्रह किया गया है कि वह पुलिस को एफ आई आर दर्ज करके घटना की जांच करने का निर्देश दे।

अफगान पुलिस ने पुष्टि की है कि राजधानी काबुल में कल रात एक पांच सितारा होटल पर हुए हमले में ९ लोग मारे गये जिनमें ४ विदेशी भी हैं। नवरोज की पूर्व संध्या होने के कारण होटल में विदेशियों समेत कई लोग नया साल मनाने के लिए मौजूद थे। रात के वक्त हमलावरों ने होटल के रेस्तरां में मेहमानों पर हमला किया, मगर सुरक्षा बलों ने चारों को मार गिराया। मृतकों में कुछ बच्चे और महिलाएं भी शामिल हैं। दो सुरक्षाकर्मी भी हमले के दौरान घायल हुए। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि तालिबान ने हमले की जिम्मेदारी ली है।

मलेशिया के लापता विमान के मलबे के स्थान पर खोज के लिए अनेक देशों के विमान और जहाज फिर से लग गए हैं, अनुमान है कि यह मलबा लापता विमान का हो सकता है। पांच सैनिक और नागरिक विमान मलबे की खोज के काम में लगे हुए हैं, आठ मार्च को लापता हुए विमान में दो सौ ३९ लोग सवार थे। उपग्रह से लिए गए चित्रों में ऑस्ट्रेलिया के पर्थ शहर के दक्षिण पूर्व में समुद्र में मलबे की पहचान की गई थी। खराब मौसम की वजह से कल खोज का काम रोक दिया गया था।

A Mumbai Sessions court today pronounced life imprisonment for all four convicts in the telephone operator gang-rape case. The court had yesterday convicted five persons for the gang-rape of the photojournalist on August 22nd and a telephone operator on July 31st last year that took place at the Shakti Mills located in central Mumbai. Our correspondent reports that Principal Sessions Judge Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi has pronounced the quantum of sentence in telephone operator gang-rape case only.

"Four convicts in the Shakti Mills telephone operator gang rape case were today sentenced to life imprisonment by a Mumbai Sessions court. The court, meanwhile, adjourned the hearing on the quantum of punishment to the convicts in the photojournalist gang rape case till March 24. While reading out the sentence of one of the convicts in the telephone operator case, the court said that the offence of rape is brutal and is a violation of the survivor's right to life. Over seven months after the gang rape of two women in the abandoned Shakti Mills compound in Mumbai, five persons were yesterday held guilty by the Sessions court. A total of seven persons including two minors, were arrested in connection with the two gang rapes involving a telephone operator and a photojournalist in July-August 2013. Three of the convicts are common to both the cases. Two minors, one in each case, are being tried by the Juvenile Justice Board separately."SWEETY KOTHARI/AIR NEWS/MUMBAI."

The crime branch that investigated both cases submitted a 362 page chargesheet in the telephone operator case on October 8 last year, while a 600 page chargesheet was filed in the photojournalist case on September 19.

The Election Commission panel is on a two day visit of UP to review the Loksabha poll preparations in the state.

Our Lucknow correspondent reports that the full election commission will hold the review meeting this afternoon with Chief Secretary Jawed Usmani, and State Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha and other senior officers. Yesterday, the poll panel met with the representatives of recognised political parties. The leaders of BJP, BSP and Congress had reportedly demanded the removal of certain officials who were alleged to be close with the leaders of the ruling party.

Meanwhile, the police have seized one crore twenty four lakh Rupees in Muzaffarnagar late last night. A statement from election office says that over one lakh twelve thousand litres of illicit liquor have been confiscated so far in the state which could have been used to lure the prospective voters. Besides, over one thousand two hundred illegal arms, around three thousand live cartridges and 190 Kilograms of explosives have also been seized in the state since the announcement of Lok Sabha elections.

Still in Uttar Pradesh a case of violation of the Model Code of Conduct has been registered against the Rashtriya Lok Dal candidate for Kairana constituency, Kartar Singh Bhadana and two others. Bhadana was booked over allegations of holding a dance party at Jamalpur village during election campaigning. Police said cases of alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct were also registered against BSP candidate Kawar Hasan and SP contestant Nahid Hasan in Shamli district.

In Meghalaya, four persons died and 41 injured when a severe cyclonic storm hit West Khasi Hills District late last night. 193 houses in ten villages were completely destroyed leaving several people homeless. The injured persons were admitted to Nongstoin and Shillong Civil Hospitals. More from our correspondent:

"Relief operations in the cyclone hit areas of the West Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya are in full swing. The Deputy Commissioner S. Kharlyngdoh has informed that more Relief Camps will be set up today in addition to the four that were constructed last night. The Government of Meghalaya today, sanctioned an amount of Rupees 50 lakh for the affected families. This amount is in addition to Rupees 1.5 lakh which will be given to the next of kin of the deceased. The Deputy Commissioner of districts, has also sanctioned Rupees 10 lakh. A three member BJP delegation today met Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde demanding proper security to its leaders in view of Lok Sabha elections. Talking to reporters later Ravi Shankar Prasad who led the delegation said, the party gave a memorandum to the Home Minister expressing apprehensions over the media reports of security threats. Mr Shinde had categorically said yesterday that the government has no information regarding terror threat to BJP leaders.

Suspended IAS officer Pradeep Sharma has moved Gujarat High Court seeking registration of an FIR and a probe into the snooping on a woman architect by state anti-terrorist squad. Pradeep Sharma had earlier approached Gandhinagar police and requested to lodge an FIR in connection with the incident against those involved in snooping on him as well as the architect, but the police did not register the complaint. According to Sharma's lawyer, the petition was filed in the high court yesterday and is likely to come up for hearing next week.

In Afghanistan, 9 civilians including 4 foreigners were killed in an attack on a hotel in the capital Kabul last night. Police said, four youths sneaked into the high security 5-star hotel in the evening hiding pistols inside their socks and feigning as hotel guests. Being Nowroz eve, a number of guests including foreigners were present at the hotel to celebrate Afghan New Year. The assailants attacked the guests in the restaurant, before all the four were gunned down by the Afghan security forces. The casualties include children and women guests present in the hotel at the time of shoot out. At least two security guards have also been wounded in the incident. क्रीमिया उक्रेन से अलग होकर रूस में शामिल होने के जनमत संग्रह के बाद आज औपचारिक रूप से आवेदन करेगा, जबकि यूरोप रूस पर प्रतिबंध लगाने की तैयारी कर रहा है। शीतयुद्ध के बाद से पूर्वी और पश्चिमी यूरोप के बीच इसे सबसे बड़ा गतिरोध माना जा रहा है। क्रीमिया के निर्वाचन प्रमुख के अनुसार ९६ दशमलव छह प्रतिशत मतदाताओं ने उक्रेन से अलग होने की इच्छा व्यक्त की, जिनमें अधिकांश रूसी भाषी हैं।

क्रीमिया की क्षेत्रीय एसैम्बली की आज बैठक होगी जिसमें रूस के साथ विलय के बारे में फैसला किया जाएगा। इस प्रक्रिया में महीनों लग सकते हैं और उक्रेन पर काफी हद तक निर्भर होने के कारण इस पर अनिश्चितता के बादल छाये हुए हैं। जनमत संग्रह की अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर कड़ी निंदा की गई है। यूरोपीय संघ ने जनमत संग्रह को असंवैधानिक बताया और कहा कि इसके परिणाम को मान्यता नहीं दी जाएगी। अमरीकी राष्ट्रपति बराक ओबामा ने कल रूस के राष्ट्रपति ब्लादीमीर पुतिन के साथ टेलीफोन पर बातचीत में कहा कि जनमत संग्रह रूसी सैन्य दबाव और हस्तक्षेप से कराया गया है तथा अमरीका और अंतर्राष्ट्रीय समुदाय इसे कभी स्वीकार नहीं करेंगे।

क्रीमिया में जनमत संग्रह पर विचार के लिए यूरोपीय संघ के २८ देशों के विदेश मंत्रियों की आपात बैठक बुलायी गयी है। यूरोपीय संघ और अमरीका ने क्रीमिया पर जनमत संग्रह को मान्यता देने से इंकार कर दिया है और इस बैठक में रूस पर लगाये जाने वाले प्रतिबंधों पर विचार किया जाएगा। यूरोपीय संघ सहित अमरीका, ब्रिटेन, फ्रांस, इटली और नेटो ने जनमत संग्रह को मानने से इंकार कर दिया है। इससे पहले यूरोपीय संघ के नेताओं ने छह मार्च को बैठक में रूस को चेतावनी दी थी कि अगर उसने तनाव कम करने के लिए तत्काल कदम नहीं उठाये तो उसे गंभीर परिणाम भुगतने होंगे।

एशियाई बाजारों में आज कच्चे तेल के भाव बढ़े। क्रीमिया में कराए गए जनमत संग्रह और उसके उक्रेन से अलग होकर रूस में शामिल होने तथा अमरीका के रूस के खिलाफ और प्रतिबंध लगाने के संकेत के बाद कच्चे तेल की कीमतों में तेजी आई। अप्रैल की डिलीवरी के लिए न्यूयॉर्क का लाइट स्वीट क्रूड २३ सेंट महंगा होकर ९९ डॉलर १२ सेंट प्रति बैरल हो गया। मई की डिलीवरी के लिए लंदन के ब्रेंट नॉर्र्थ सी क्रूड की कीमत में भी ११ सेंट की वृद्धि हुई और एक बैरल १०८ डॉलर से अधिक का बोला गया।

फिलीस्तीन के राष्ट्रपति महमूद अब्बास आज व्हाइट हाउस में अमरीका के राष्ट्रपति बराक ओबामा से मिलेंगे। इस बातचीत से पहले इजराइल और फिलीस्तीन के बीच बयानबाजी जारी है। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि इजराइल किसी भी शांति समझौते से पहले खुद को यहूदी राष्ट्र के रूप में मान्यता दिए जाने की मांग कर रहा है।

बराक ओबामा और महमूद अब्बास के बीच बातचीत एक ऐसे समय हो रही है जब अमेरिका ठंडे बस्ते में पड़े पश्चिमी एशियाई शांति वार्ता को फिर से शुरू करने की कवायद में जुटा है। २९ अप्रैल तक इजरायल और फलस्तीन को सीधी शांति वार्ता के लिये प्रारूप तय करना है, लेकिन जुबानी जंग के चलते मामला खटाई में पड़ता नजर आ रहा है। इजराइल के प्रधानमंत्री बेंजामिन नेतनयाहू ने कहा है कि इजरायल को यहूदी राष्ट्र की मान्यता दिये बगैर कोई भी शांति समझौता नहीं हो सकता। जबकि महमूद अब्बास का मानना है कि ऐसा करना ऐतिहासिक भूल होगी, क्योंकि इससे १९४८ में अपने घरों को छोड़कर भागे या फिर जबरदस्ती निकाल दिये गये फलस्तीनी शरणार्थियों की घर वापसी के दरवाजे बंद हो जायेंगे।अतुल तिवारी, आकाशवाणी समाचार, दुबई।

दक्षिण कोरिया ने उत्तर कोरिया से रॉकेट परीक्षण जैसी भड़काऊ गतिविधियां रोकने को कहा है। उसने पिछले कुछ सप्ताह में हुए ऐसे परीक्षणों से क्षेत्रीय सुरक्षा को खतरा होने की आशंका व्यक्त की है। उत्तर कोरिया ने कल जापान के सागर में पूर्वी तट पर २५ रॉकेट परीक्षण किए। अमरीका ने भी इन परीक्षणों की आलोचना की है। इस वर्ष फरवरी से मार्च के शुरू के दिनों में उत्तर कोरिया ने कई मिसाइल और रॉकेट परीक्षण किए जिन्हें दक्षिण कोरिया में अमरीका के साथ चल रहे संयुक्त सैन्य परीक्षण के प्रति उसके रोष के रूप में देखा जा रहा है।

श्रीलंका की नौसेना और तटरक्षक बल ने पिछले सप्ताह स्थानीय अदालतों द्वारा रिहा किए गए १४० भारतीय मछुआरों के प्रत्यर्पण में सहायता की। श्रीलंका की नौसेना की विज्ञप्ति के अनुसार कनकेसनतुरई तट पर भारतीय तटरक्षक बल के दो जहाजों पर ११६ मछुआरों और २६ नौकाओं को सौंपा गया। जबकि २४ मछुआरें और पांच नौकाएं मन्नार के निकट भारत के तटरक्षक बल के जहाज पर सौंपे गए।

पाकिस्तान में बलूचिस्तान प्रांत के लरकाना में कल कुरान को कथित रूप से अपवित्र करने के विरोध में नसीराबाद के डेरा अल्लाहयार और अन्य शहरों तथा जाफराबाद जिलों में हुए प्रदर्शनों में बारह लोग घायल हो गए। उत्तेजित भीड़ ने जाफराबाद के उसता मोहम्मद कस्बे में कई दुकानों को आग लगा दी। इसके अलावा बलूचिस्तान के मुराद जमाली और अन्य कस्बों में भी विरोध प्रदर्शन हुए। स्थानीय धार्मिक नेताओं के नेतृत्व में जुटे लोगों ने हिन्दू मंदिरों और गुरूद्वारों पर भी हमले की कोशिश की। मंदिरों और गुरूद्वारों के आसपास सुरक्षा व्यवस्था कड़ी कर दी गयी है। पुलिस हिन्दू और सिक्ख रिहायशी इलाकों में गश्त कर रही है।

सुरक्षा बलों ने जम्मू-कश्मीर में नियंत्रण रेखा से लगे पुंछ जि+ले में घुसपैठ की कोशिश कर रहे हिजबुल मुजाहिदीन के आतंकवादी को गिरफ्तार किया है। पुलिस ने बताया कि इस गिरफ्तारी से पुंछ जि+ले में आतंकवादी संगठन हिजबुल मुजाहिदीन के स्थानीय कार्यकर्ताओं के साथ तालमेल का पर्दाफाश करने में मदद मिलेगी। पुलिस ने बिना किसी को नुकसान पहुंचाये बहुत ही समझदारी के साथ इस कार्रवाई को अंजाम दिया। गिरफ्‌तार आतंकवादी मोहम्मद इसहाक उर्फ मुन्ना पुंछ जिले के डिगवार तेरवान गांव का रहने वाला है। उसके पास से एक एके-४७ राइफल, दो मैगजीन, ५५ से अधिक गोलियां और एक आई ई डी बरामद हुआ है। वह २०११ में प्रशिक्षण के लिए पाकिस्तान के कब्जे+ वाले कश्मीर चला गया था।

पश्चिम बंगाल के मालदा जिले में आज सत्तारूढ़ तृणमूल कॉंग्रेस- टीएमसी के समर्थकों और कॉंग्रेस कार्यकर्ताओं के बीच झड़प में तीन कॉंगे्रसी कार्यकर्ता घायल हो गए। लोकसभा चुनाव के लिए अपने उम्मीदवारों के समर्थन में दीवार पर लिखने का प्रयास कर रहे कॉंग्रेसी कार्यकर्ताओं के साथ टीएमसी समर्थकों की झड़प हो गई। उन्होंने देसी बम और गोलियां भी चलाई। कांग्रेसी कार्यकर्ताओं को गोली लगने के बाद अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया। मालदा के जिला पुलिस अधीक्षक राजेश यादव ने बताया कि इलाके में बड़ी संख्या में पुलिस बल तैनात कर दिया गया है और स्थिति नियंत्रण में है।

निर्वाचन आयोग ने असम में मतदाताओं को लुभाने के लिए शराब का इस्तेमाल रोकने के उपायों का जायज+ा लेने के वास्ते श्री संतोष मिश्रा को आबकारी प्रेक्षक नियुक्त किया है। वे आज गुवाहाटी पहुंचेंगे। राज्य चुनाव विभाग के सूत्रों ने बताया कि वे सभी जिला प्रमुखों और वरिष्ठ आबकारी अधिकारियों के साथ वीडियों कान्फ्रेंसिंग के जरिए स्थिति की समीक्षा करेंगे। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि किसी भी तरह की शराब के वितरण पर नज+र रखने के लिए १९० उड़न दस्ते और १७५ निगरानी टीमें पहले ही गठित की जा चुकी हैं।

उच्चतम न्यायालय के आदेश के मद्देनजर उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार ने राज्य के सूचना आयुक्तों के सरकारी वाहनों से लाल बत्ती हटा दी है। संपदा विभाग के अधिकारियों ने इस बात की पुष्टि की है कि उन्होंने आदेश मिलने के बाद सूचना आयुक्तों की सरकारी गाड़ियों से लाल बत्ती हटाने का काम शुरू कर दिया है। इससे पहले राज्य सरकार ने विभिन्न निगमों तथा अन्य संस्थानों के प्रमुखों और राज्य मंत्री स्तर के अधिकारियों के वाहनों से लाल बत्ती हटा दी थी।

Crimea will formally apply to join Russia today, after voting to split from Ukraine as Europe prepared to hit Moscow with a wave of sanctions in the worst East-West stand-off since the Cold War. According to Crimea Election Chief, an overwhelming 96.6 per cent of voters on the mostly Russian-speaking peninsula chose to secede from Ukraine in yesterday's referendum. There was sharp international condemnation of the vote. The European Union said, the referendum was illegal and illegitimate and its outcome would not be recognised. Foreign Ministers of the European Union 28 member-states are to hold an emergency meeting in Brussels. Aftermaths of yesterday's referendum on the future of Crimea and the possible sanctions against Russia will become the dominant issue at a conference. The EU followed the US, Britain, France, Italy, and NATO in declaring its refusal to honor the results of the referendum.

US President Barack Obama phoned his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin yesterday and told him the vote under duress of Russian military intervention, would never be recognised by the United States and the international community.

Following hints of fresh sanction against Moscow, oil prices rose in Asia today. New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate for April delivery, was up 23 cents to 99.12 dollar in mid-morning Asian trade, and Brent North Sea crude for May gained 11 cents to over 108 dollar.

Investors are worried that potential sanctions against Russia could disrupt gas and oil supplies from the country. More than 70 per cent of Russia's gas and oil exports to Europe pass through Ukraine.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will meet US President Obama at the White house today. Ahead of the talks Israeli and Palestinian sides are engaged in a war of words over Israel’s demands to recognize it as a Jewish state before any peace deal is signed.

"Barack Obama and Mahmoud Abbas meeting comes at a time when US is trying to give a push to revive the stalled peace process in West Asia. A deadline of 29th of April has been set for the Israeli and Palestinian sides to agree upon on a framework to restart the stalled direct peace talks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ruled out any deal with the Palestinians unless they recognise Israel as the Jewish state and give up their refugees' right of return. The Palestinians have rejected the demand saying it would deny their historical narrative and put breaks on the right of their refugees to return to homes they fled from or were forced out of during the 1948 war which led to the creation of Israel. A Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist was arrested by the security forces when he was trying to infiltrate along the Line of Control in Poonch district. Police said, his arrest is a major breakthrough in exposing a major link between terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen and its Over Ground Workers in Poonch district. Police sources said the operation was successfully carried out in a surgical manner while avoiding any collateral damage.

The arrested ultra has been identified as Muhammad Ishaq alias Munna, a resident of Village Digwar Terwan in Poonch district. An AK-47 Rifle, two magazines, over 55 rounds of ammunition and an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) were recovered from his possession. He had crossed over to PoK for arms training in 2011.

Rain lashed many parts of the Kashmir Valley today while authorities in Bandipora district of north Kashmir have issued an avalanche warning. The Meteorological department in Srinagar has warned of heavy rainfall or snowfall along with hailstorm and thunder squall at few places over the next 24 hours. He said there would be an increase in rainfall activity in the state over the next few days.

Meanwhile, authorities in Baramulla district of north Kashmir have evacuated 21 families to safer places in view of the land slides in the area.

In Puducherry, the Election Commission has started using all modes of communication to educate people for voting. Rallies and Door-to-Door Campaigns are being carried out to ensure 100 per cent voting in the forth coming Lok Sabha Elections. Besides modern technologies, the Election Commission has started using the century old method of street plays to educate the voters. These street theatre performers will be travelling from village to village and popularise the importance of voting. These plays form a part of Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation campaign and this will go on upto 6th April.

In Assam, Election Commission appointed Excise Observer Santosh Mishra will arrive in Guwahati today to take stock of the steps being undertaken to prevent use of liquor to lure voters. Our correspondent reports that he will take stock of the situation through video conferencing with all district heads and senior excise officials.

"190 Flying Squads and 175 Static Surveillance teams have already been pressed into service to keep an eye on distribution of all kinds of liquor in Assam. Over 12 thousand 500 liquor seized cases have been registered in the state. The first phase of polling will be held on 7th of next month in five seats. Political activities are on to woo the voters. Three Congress supporters sustained bullet injuries in a clash with ruling TMC supporters in West Bengal's Malda district today. The clash took place when the Congress supporters were engaged in wall painting for their candidates for the ensuing Lok Sabha poll. The rival supporters clashed on the site for wall painting and they hurled bombs and fired bullets in which three Congress members were hurt and admitted to the Malda medical college hospital. Malda district superintendent of police Rajesh Yadav said, a strong contingent of police force is stationed in the area and the situation has been brought under control.

In Odisha, a joint operation by the Special Operation Group District Voluntary Force and BSF has busted at least six Maoist camps in Navrangpur district. Stating this in a press conference Inspector General of Police Yaswant Jethwa said that police have also recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the jungle bordering Odisha and Chhattisgarh. He said due to the combing operation, a big untoward incident planned by the Maoists of Chhattisgarh has been averted.

In Uttar Pradesh, the construction of world's tallest temple in Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna started today. It will be a 700 feet high skyscraper spread over an area of 5.5 acres and also have 70 floors. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness ISKCON, which is carrying out the project, hopes to complete the work in the next 5 years.

Our correspondent reports that the project will cost more than 300 crore rupees and ISKCON is hoping to raise the money from the devotees.

Sri Lankan Navy and Coast Guard today assisted in the repatriation of 140 Indian fishermen and 31 fishing boats after they were freed by the local courts last week. According to a press release by the Sri Lankan Navy, 116 fishermen and 26 boats were handed over to the Indian Coast Guard Ships 'Abheek' and 'Rajtharang' at the International Maritime Boundary Line off the coast of Kankasanthurei. 24 Indian fishermen and 5 boats were handed over to the Indian Coast Guard Ship 'Rajkamal' in the seas near Mannar.

In Pakistan, at least 12 people were injured in clashes with police during rallies and demonstrations held in Dera Allahyar and other towns of Nasirabad and Jaffarabad districts in Balochistan yesterday in protest against alleged desecration of Holy Quran in Larkana. The angry mob set on fire a number of shops in Usta Mohammad town of Jaffarabad. Protests were also held in Dera Murad Jamali and other towns and cities of Balochistan. A large number of people led by local religious leaders tried to attack Hindu temples and Gurdwaras. They also tried to enter Hindu localities, but police foiled their attempts. Police fired in the air to stop the protesters from attacking a temple in Dera Allahyar.

Security has been beefed up in and around temples and Gurdwaras and police started patrolling Hindu and Sikh localities.

In Pakistan, unknown militants fired rockets at a NATO container in the Khyber tribal region’s Shagai area yesterday. No casualties were reported in the incident. Meanwhile, a van of a cement factory in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Nowshera district was blown up in a remote control bomb attack and a police mobile passing nearby was also damaged.

In the Women's Singles finals this morning, ailing Radwanska lost to twentieth seed Pennetta, in straight sets, 2-6, 1-6. Radwanska went into the match as a favourite, but was unable to give her 100 per cent, because of a knee injury that severely restricted her movement. World Number Two Novak Djokovic has lifted the Men's Singles trophy, beating Swiss Roger Federer, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. Federer still leads 17-16 to Djokovic, having beaten the Serb in the semifinals at Dubai two weeks ago.
