मुख्य समाचार :

• जाने-माने सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता अन्ना हजारे का, भ्रष्टाचार से निपटने के लिए जन लोकपाल विधेयक की मांग को लेकर आमरण अनशन शुरू।
• सीबीआई ने पूर्व दूरसंचार मंत्री ए राजा के निकट सहयोगी सादिक बाचा की मौत का मामला दर्ज किया और जांच शुरू की।

जाने-माने सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता अन्ना हजारे ने भ्रष्टाचार से असरदार  तरीके से निपटने के लिए व्यापक जन लोकपाल विधेयक लाने की मांग को लेकर आज नई दिल्ली में जन्तर-मन्तर पर आमरण अनशन शुरू किया। उनके इस अभियान में पूर्व आई पी एस अधिकारी किरण बेदी, सूचना अधिकार कार्यकर्ता अरविन्द केजरीवाल और सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता स्वामी अग्निवेश भी शामिल हुए। विभिन्न वर्गो के सैंकड़ो लोगों ने पदयात्रा भी निकाली। यह पदयात्रा इंडिया गेट से शुरू होकर जन्तर-मन्तर पहुची। श्री हजारे ने संवाददाताओं से बातचीत मे कहा कि वे अपना अनशन तब तक जारी रखेंगे, जब तक सरकार, जन लोकपाल विधेयक का मसौदा तैयार करने के लिए अधिकारियों, बुद्धिजीवियों और नागरिकों की समिति बनाने पर सहमत नहीं होती।

आठ दिन में नहीं होगा लगभग तीन-चार महीने का समय लगेगा हम जानते हैं। तो हम लोग कहां सिर्फ आप यह डिसिजन ले लों कि लोकपाल बिल का आधे आपके लोग आधे हमारे लोग और ड्राफ्ट बनाना शुरू कर दो बस। देश की जनता को यह यकीन होगा की  अब यह कानून बनने वाला है।
कांग्रेस ने  अन्ना हजारे से अपील की है कि वे अपना आमरण अनशन समाप्त कर दें। पार्टी प्रवक्ता मनीष तिवारी ने कहा कि श्री हजारे का विरोध लोकतांत्रिक लेकिन अनावश्यक है क्योंकि सरकार लोकपाल कानून बनाने की दिशा में कार्य कर रही है।
उधर, भारतीय जनता पार्टी ने कहा है कि सरकार को इन सामाजिक कार्यकर्ताओं से बातचीत करनी चाहिए और जन लोकपाल विधेयक पर विचार के लिए सर्वदलीय बैठक बुलानी चाहिए। पार्टी ने श्री हजारे से आग्रह किया है कि वे अपना अनशन खत्म कर दें। प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय ने भी अन्ना हजारे से अनशन तोड़ने की अपील की है। पिछले महीने हुई मुलाकात में प्रधानमंत्री ने अन्ना हजारे का यह सुझाव मान लिया था कि मंत्रियों की एक उपसमिति लोकपाल विधेयक के मसौदे पर विचार के लिए जाने-माने सामाजिक कार्यकर्ताओं से बातचीत करे।
 रक्षा मंत्री की अध्यक्षता में इस उप समिति ने अन्ना हजारे के सहयोगियों से मुलाकात की थी। लेकिन बातचीत का कोई नतीजा नहीं निकला था, क्योंकि कार्यकर्ता इस बात पर अड़े रहे कि सरकार उनके मसौदे को ही स्वीकार करे।

 अन्ना हजारे के समर्थन में आज मुंबई में भी बडी संख्या में लोग ऐतिहासिक आजाद मैदान में एकत्रित हुये। कई कार्यकर्ताओं ने उपवास शुरू किया। सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता मेधा पाटकर ने कहा कि वयोवृद्ध अन्ना हजारे के ऐतिहासिक आमरण अनशन ने महात्मा गांधी के अहिंसात्मक दर्शन की  ताकत को एक बार फिर उजागर कर दिया है। छत्रपति शिवाजी टर्मिनल के पास गैरसरकारी संगठनों ने प्रचार सामग्री बांटी।
 सवेरे शिवाजी पार्क से आजाद मैदान तक मोटरसाइकिल और कारों की बड़ी रैली में युवाओं ने बढ़चढ़ कर हिस्सा लिया।

 सीबीआई ने पूर्व दूरसंचार मंत्री ए राजा के निकट सहयोगी सादिक बाचा की मौत का मामला दर्ज किया है और जांच शुरू कर दी है।  बाचा को पिछले महीने की १६ तारीख को चेन्नई में उनके आवास पर रहस्यमयी परिस्थितियों में मृत पाया गया था। सूत्रों के अनुसार जांच का काम सीबीआई को सौंपने की अधिसूचना तीन दिन के अन्दर जारी करने के उच्चतम न्यायालय के कल के निर्देश के बाद ऐसा किया गया है। सीबीआई ने ३८ वर्षीय बाचा से टू जी स्पेक्टम आवंटन मामले मे ंपूछताछ की थी। बाचा की पत्नी का कहना है कि जांच का दबाव नहीं सहन कर पाने के कारण उसने आत्महत्या कर ली थी।

 रिलायंस कम्युनिकेशन्स के चेयरमैन अनिल अंबानी और कुछ अन्य दूरसंचार कंपनियों के प्रतिनिधि आज संसद की लोक लेखा समिति के सामने पेश हुए। उनसे, टू जी स्पेक्टम आवटन में कथित अनियमितताओं के सिलसिले मे पूछताछ की गई। श्री अंबानी से स्वान टेलीकॉम के साथ  संबंधों दोहरी टेक्नोलॉजी के लाइसेंस प्राप्त करने में तरफदारी जैसे मुददों पर लगभग दो घंटे पूछताछ की गई। लोक लेखा समिति के अध्यक्ष मुरली मनोहर जोशी ने संवाददाताओं को बताया कि श्री अंबानी ने कुछ सवालों को छोडकर बाकि के स्पष्ट जवाब दिये। श्री जोशी ने बताया कि एटिसलाट के प्रतिनिधि अतुल झाम्ब, डी बी टेलीकॉम के विनोद गोयंका, एस टैल के श्रीनिवासन, यूनीटेक के संजय चन्द्रा और टेलेनौर के चार्ल्स वुडवर्थ से भी  पूछताछ की गई।

इन चारों ही लोगों के साथ मुख्य बात यह थी कि इनके खिलाफ सीएजी ने इनजिबिलिटी का कि यह कानूनी तौर पर नियमानुसार इन्हें लाइसेंस नहंी मिलने चाहिए थे। क्योंकि बहुत सी अनिमितताएं इन्होंने बरती थी। उन अनिमितताओं का उन्होंने अपनी तरफ से जवाब दिया। लेकिन जो बहुत से मिनिस्ट्री के और सीएजी के कथन से मेल नहीं खाता। यह बात लगभग इन सभी कंपनियों के साथ थी । एक सी ही गलतियां की है हरेक ने और कमेटी पूरी तौर से इसकी जांच कर रही है।

 इस बीच, लोक लेखा समिति ने कांग्रेस प्रवक्ता मनीष तिवारी के इस कथित बयान को गंभीरता से लिया है कि भारतीय जनता पार्टी को समिति के अध्यक्ष मुरली मनोहर जोशी पर लगाम कसनी चाहिए। डॉक्टर जोशी ने संवाददाताओं से बातचीत मे कहा कि समिति इस बयान की सच्चाई का पता लगा रही है और इसके बाद ही उचित कार्रवाई की जाएगी।

 निर्वाचन आयोग ने विधानसभा चुनाव वाले राज्यों तमिलनाडु, पश्चिम बंगाल और असम से आज तक करीब ४३ करोड़ रूपये की नकदी और वस्तुए जब्त की हैं। चुनाव में अवैध रूप से धन के इस्तेमाल का पता लगाने के आयोग  के अभियान के तहत ये कार्रवाई की गई है।
 तमिलनाडु से २८ करोड़ ३९ लाख रूपये जब्त किए गए हैं। पश्चिम बंगाल से पांच करोड़ रूपये और असम से करीब चार करोड़ रूपये बरामद किए गए हैं। आयकर विभाग ने चुनाव वाले राज्यों में नकद राशि के लेनदेन पर निगरानी रखने के लिए करीब सत्तर दल बनाए हैं। चुनाव में धन बल के इस्तेमाल को रोकने के संबंध में आयोग ने वाहनों और संबंधित लोगों के मकानों की तलाशी के लिए उड़नदस्ते भी बना दिए हैं।

 असम में बरखला, करीमगंज दक्षिण और अलगपुर विधानसभा क्षेत्रों के तीन मतदान केंद्रों में पुनर्मतदान होगा। इन तीनो मतदान केंद्रों में कल पहले चरण के दौरान मतदान हुआ था।
 मुख्य चुनाव अधिकारी हेमन्त नरजारे ने आज बताया कि मतदान में गड़बड़ी और इवीएम में आई खराबी के कारण इन केंद्रों पर पुनर्मतदान जरूरी हो गया है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया कि राज्य में दूसरे चरण में ६४ विधानसभा क्षेत्रों में ग्यारह अप्रैल को होने वाले मतदान के लिये  प्रचार तेजी पकड रहा है।

कांग्रेस महासचिव राहुल गांधी ने छायगांव, माजबझ और रोवा विधानसभा क्षेत्रों में चुनावी सभा को संबोधित करते हुए कहा कि कांग्रेस पार्टी की सरकार के दौरान शांति के साथ राज्य का चौमुखी विकास हुआ है। भाजपा के शाहनवाज हुसैन और शत्रुध्न सिंहा और स्मिता ईरानी ने यह दावा कि भाजपा सरकार राज्य के गरीबों का कल्याण कर सकती है। असम गणपरिषद के प्रफुल्ल कुमार मोहंटा ने मतदाताओं से राज्य में स्थिर सरकार के लिए वोट देने के लिए अपील की।

 पुड्डूचेरी विधानसभा चुनाव के लिए आज  प्रचार अभियान की शुरूआत करते हुए यूपीए अध्यक्ष सोनिया गांधी ने कहा कि कांगे्रस विकास के मामलों पर राजनीति नहीं करती और यह भेदभाव किये बिना कि राज्य में किस पार्टी की सरकार है ,सभी राज्यों को समान महत्व देती है। पुड्डूचेरी में आज शाम एक चुनाव सभा को संबोधित करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि केंद्र ने धर्मनिरपेक्षता की मजबूत नींव डाली है और अल्पसंख्यकों में आत्म विश्वास पैदा किया है। केंद्र की उपलब्धियों का जिक्र करते हुए श्रीमती सोनिया गांधी ने कहा कि देश के युवाओं की ओर विशेष ध्यान दिया जा रहा है, क्योंकि वे देश का भविष्य है। श्रीमती गांधी ने कहा कि पुड्डूचेरी देश में ऐसी अकेली जगह है जहां स्थानीय छात्रों को  चिकित्सा शिक्षा मुफत प्रदान की जाती है।

 पश्चिम बंगाल में विधानसभा चुनाव के लिए भारतीय जनता पार्टी ने आज अपना चुनाव घोषणा पत्र  जारी किया। पार्टी ने राज्य में गरीबी की रेखा से नीचे रह रहे लोगों के लिए महीने में एक रूपये प्रति किलोग्राम के हिसाब से पांच किलोग्राम गेंहू और एक रूपये ५० पैसे प्रति किलो के हिसाब से पांच किलोग्राम चावल देने का वादा किया है। पार्टी महासचिव अनंत कुमार ने आज कोलकाता में घोषणा पत्र जारी करते हुए गरीबी की रेखा से नीचे रह रहे लोगों की सूची में संशोधन करने का आश्वासन दिया और कहा कि इसका लाभ लक्षित लोगों तक पहुंचना चाहिये। घोषणा पत्र में यह भी कहा गया है कि उदयोगों के लिए ली गयी जमीन के मालिकों को उचित मुआवजा मिलना चाहिये।

 भारत और थाईलैंड २०१४ तक द्विपक्षीय व्यापार को दुगुना करने पर सहमत हो गये हैं। दोनों देशों ने सेवाओं और निवेश सहित द्विपक्षीय व्यापार समझौते करने का निश्चय किया।
     थाईलैंड के प्रधानमंत्री अभिसित वेच्छाछिवा ने दोनों देशों के बीच पर्यटन को बढावा देने के लिये अपने नागरिकों के भारत पहुंचने पर वीजा दिये जाने का आग्रह किया। उन्होंने उदयोगपतियों के साथ नई दिल्ली में अपनी बैठक के बाद संवाददाताओं को बताया कि उन्होंने इस मुददे को विदेश मंत्री एस एम कृष्णा के सामने रख दिया है। एक प्रश्न का जवाब देते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि हालांकि उनका देश पिछले वर्ष राजनीतिक उथल पुथल के कठिन दौर से गुजरा लेकिन उनके देश में विदेशी पर्यटकों की रिकार्ड संख्या एक करोड साठ लाख दर्ज की गयी जिसमें से आठ लाख भारतीय थे। उदयोगपतियों के साथ बैठक में उन्होंने भारतीय कंपनियों को अपने देश में निवेश के लिये आमं+त्रित किया। थाईलैंड के प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि उनके देश में कुशल विशेषज्ञ उपलब्ध हैं और वह भारत के साथ सहयोग करना चाहते हैं।
   भारत यात्रा पर आये थाईलैंड के प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि आज भारत दवाओं के निर्माता और स्वास्थ्य देखभाल के क्षेत्र में विश्व में अग्रणी है और थाईलैंड का चिकित्सा उपकरण तथा आपूर्ति व्यापार वार्षिक ८० करोड अमरीकी डालर है।
    वाणिज्य मंत्री आनन्द शर्मा ने नई दिल्ली में थाईलैंड के प्रधानमंत्री अभिसित वेच्छाछिवा के साथ व्यापार बैठक में कहा कि इस समझौते में निवेश, सेवायें और माल कारोबार शामिल है। भारत इस वर्ष के अंत तक बातचीत पूरी करने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध है।

 विश्व कप विजेता भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम के कोच गैरी कर्स्टन ने व्यक्तिगत कारणों से कोच का पद छोड़ दिया है। पिछले तीन वर्षों से भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम की उपलब्धियों से खुश निवर्तमान कोच गैरी कर्स्टन ने मुंबई में आज अपनी विदाई प्रेस कांफ्रेंस में कहा कि जिस टीम को उन्होंने तीन साल तक संवारा उसे अलविदा कहना सबसे मुश्किल विदाइयों में से एक है। कार्यकाल बढ़ाने की पेशकश ठुकरा चुके कर्स्टन ने कहा कि फिलहाल उनकी कोच के तौर पर किसी टीम से जुड़ने की कोई योजना नहीं है और वह अपने परिवार के साथ समय बिताना चाहते हैं।

  विश्वकप क्रिकेट प्रतियोगिता के फाइनल में भारत से हार के बाद कुमार संगकारा ने श्रीलंका की एकदिवसीय और ट्वेंटी-२० टीम की कप्तानी से त्याग पत्र दे दिया है। हालांकि वह इंग्लैंड और ऑस्ट्रेलिया के साथ आगामी श्रृंखलाओं तक अस्थायी तौर पर टेस्ट टीम के कप्तान बने रहेंगे।
 इस बीच, संगकारा इंडियन प्रीमियर लीग-आईपीएल के चौथे सत्र में डेक्कन चार्जर्स के कप्तान होंगे, जबकि न्यूजीलैंड के पूर्व कप्तान डेनियल विटोरी रॉयल चैलेंजर्स बेंगलूर की कप्तानी संभालेंगे।

   दक्षिण कश्मीर के पुलवामा जिले के ददसारा गांव में सुरक्षा बलों और पुलिस के साथ मुठभेड़ में हिजबुल मुजाहिदीन का सरगना आतंकवादी मारा गया है। हमारे संवाददाता ने पुलिस उप-महानिरीक्षक के हवाले से बताया है कि मुठभेड़ में जम्मू कश्मीर पुलिस का एक सब-इंस्पेक्टर और सेना का एक जवान शहीद हो गया।

आज दोपहर के डेढ़ बजे शुरू हुई इस झड़प में हिजबुल मुजाहुद्दीन गूप्त का एक कमांडर सज्जाद अहमद डार मारा गया जबकि डीआईजी के अनुसार मुठभेड़ में जम्मू कश्मीर पुलिस बल का एक सब-इंस्पेक्टर सत्यजन नरबू और सेना का एक जवान भी मारा गया। मुठभेड़ की जगह से एक बंदूक और कुछ गोलीबारी भी बरामद किया गया। डीआईजी ने कहा कि मारा गया मिलिट्रेंट प्राल इलाके में काफी अरसे से सक्रिय था।

 श्री सत्य साईबाबा की स्वास्थ्य स्थिति आज सुबह से ही स्थिर है। आज शाम जारी स्वास्थ्य बुलेटिन में श्री सत्य साई इन्स्टीच्यूट ऑफ हायर मेडीकल साइंसेस के निदेशक ए एन सफाया ने कहा है कि अब भी वे वेन्टीलेटर और डायलेसिस पर हैं। संस्थान के निदेशक के अनुसार श्री सत्य साईं बाबा के सभी महत्वपूर्ण अंग करीब-करीब सामान्य तौर पर कार्य कर रहे हैं। उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि डॉक्टरों का एक दल उनके स्वास्थ्य की स्थिति पर निगरानी रखे हुए है।

 मुंबई शेयर बाजार का सेंसेक्स आज १५ अंक घटकर १९ हजार ६८७ पर बंद हुआ। नेशनल स्टाक एक्सचेंज का निफ्‌टी दो अंक बढकर पांच हजार ९१० पर पहुंच गया। एशियाई शेयर बाजारों में मिलाजुला रूख देखने को मिला। एक डालर की तुलना में रूपया १७ पैसे मजबूत होकर लगभग पांच महीने के उच्चतम स्तर ४४ रूपये ४२ पैसे पर पहुंच गया। दिल्ली सर्राफा बाजार में सोना ३० रूपए बढकर २१ हजार १५० रूपए प्रति दसग्राम पर बंद हुआ जबकि चांदी ५०० रूपए बढकर ५७ हजार ५०० रूपए प्रति किलोग्राम की नई उंचाई पर पहुंच गई।

Noted Social activist, Anna Hazare, today began his fast-unto-death in the national capital, demanding enactment of a comprehensive Jan Lokpal Bill to give wider powers to the to check corruption. Other important personalities who joined him, included former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and social worker Swami Agniwesh. Hundreds of people from all walks of life participated in the campaign which started from the India Gate lawns and concluded at Jantar Mantar.  Talking to reporters, Mr Hazare said that he will continue his fast till the  government agrees to form a joint committee comprising of  citizens and intellectuals alongwith officials to draft the Jan Lokpal Bill.

Supporting the campaign, the BJP today said that the Government should hold talks with social activists and call an all party meeting to discuss the modalities of the Jan Lokpal Bill. The Party however urged Hazare to end his fast.

The Prime Minister's office also appealed to Hazare to abandon his hunger strike.

A large number of people from various parts of Mumbai today gathered at the historic Azad Maidan to support social activist Anna Hazare’s agitation for the demand to involve civil society in formulation of the anti-graft Lokpal Bill. Many activists too started fast and addressed large number of people. A huge rally of bikes and cars starting from Shivaji Park to Azad Maidan was also organised in the morning.

Congress today appealed Anna Hazare to withdraw his fast unto death on the Lokpal Bill issue. Talking to the reporters in New Delhi today, party spokesperson Manish Tewari said that Hazare's way of protest is democratic but unnecessary as the government is already working on the legislation. He said the the social activist should engage with the government to work on the Bill.

The  CBI today registered a case and began a probe into the death of Sadiq Batcha, a close aide of former Telecom Minister A Raja who has been arrested in the multi-crore spectrum allocation scam. The agency has started its investigations in the mysterious death of Batcha who was found hanging at his home in Chennai on March 16th. CBI sources said that the action came after the Supreme Court's direction to the government yesterday to issue within three days a notification for handing over the investigations to CBI.

The CBI today carried out searches at 20 premises of DDA and CPWD officers besides that of a private firm, Jubilee Sports, in connection with alleged irregularities in laying of synthetic turf for lawn bowl event during the Commonwealth Games. Our correspondent reports that teams of CBI sleuths swooped down at the locations in New Delhi and Noida, after registering a fresh case of criminal conspiracy under IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act.

Reliance Communications Chairman Anil Ambani and representatives of some telecom companies today appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, PAC which quizzed them in connection with alleged irregularities in 2G spectrum allocation. Mr Ambani was questioned for nearly two hours on various aspects including the allegations that his group received favours in getting dual technology license and his links with Swan Telecom. Briefing the media, the Chairman of the PAC, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi said, Ambani was frank in his answers except on a couple of questions, where he referred to being named in the CBI chargesheet in the Supreme Court. Mr Joshi said, Atul Jhamb of Etisalat, Vinod Goenka of DB Telecom , S-Tel Representative Mr Srinivasan, Sanjay Chandra of Unitech and Charles Woodworth of Telenor were also questioned extensively regarding spectrum allocation and related matters. Mr Joshi said, as pointed out by the Comptroller and Auditor General in its report, all these companies were not eligible for licenses as there were several irregularities at different stages.

Parliament's Public Accounts Committee, PAC has taken a serious note of the reported statement by Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari saying that BJP  should reign in the Chairman of the Committee, Dr.Murli Manohar Joshi. Briefing the Media, Dr.Joshi said that Committee is verifying the authenticity of the statement and based on that, appropriate steps will be taken. He was responding to queries about the role of JPC and PAC probing the same matter of 2-G spectrum allocation scam and any conflict of interest there of.

The Election Commission has seized about 43 crore rupees in cash and kind till today in the poll-bound states of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Assam. This is part of the drive by the Commission to unearth unaccounted money being used in polls.  Among the three states, 28 crore 39 lakh rupees have been recovered from Tamil Naidu. The Income Tax department has formed around 70 teams to monitor movement of hard cash in the poll-bound states.

Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva today sought VISA on arrival to their tourists in India, to boost two-way travel. Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva told reporters after his meeting with industry leaders in New Delhi, that he raised the issue with external affairs minister S M Krishna. During his meeting with capitans of industry, he invited investments from Indian companies.  Thai Prime Minister said that his country has shortage of skilled manpower and would seek cooperation in this area with India. He said that India is a world leader in the manufacture of drugs and in modern health care. The two countries have already abolished the duties on 82 items under an 'Early Harvest Scheme'  launched in 2004. Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said that India is committed to concluding negotiations with Thailand for a free trade pact by this year-end, a step which will help in doubling bilateral trade by 2014. Thai Prime Minister this evening held delegation level talks with his Indian counterpart Dr. Manmohan Singh. Official sources said that Coordinated patrolling in the sea to deal with piracy, expansion in trade ties and greater Thai investment in the infrastructure remained at the centre of the discussions. The Thai Prime Minister is leaving for home later tonight.

In Kashmir valley,  a top militant commander of Hizbul Mujaheddin was killed in an encounter with the police and security forces at Dadsara village of Pulwama District in South Kashmir. Our correspondent quoting DIG police of South Kashmir, reports that during the encounter, a Sub-Inspector of Jammu & Kashmir police and  Army personnel also laid down their lives.

In Assam, repolling has been proposed in three polling stations in Barkhala, Karimganj South and Algapur assembly constituencies in the state. Polling was held in these booths during the first phase of elections yesterday. The Chief Electoral Officer Hemanta Narzary today said that repolling was necesisted due to malpractices and non- functioning of EVMs . Mr. Narzary told that electorates boycotted polls in 40 polling stations in four assembly constituencies. In one remote polling booth in Margherita assembly constituency only one person excercised his right of franchise. AIR correspondent reports that the poll campaiging is gaining momentum in 64 constituencies where polling will be held on April 11 during concluding phase of elections in the state . Stalwarts of the major political parties are in the field keeping their banner high.

Kannada writer S L Bhyrappa was today chosen for the prestigious Saraswati Samman for his novel 'Mandra'.  The award, constituted by K K Birla Foundation, consists of 7.50 lakh rupees, a citation and a plaque. An official press release said, the works published in 22 Indian languages during 2000-2009 were considered for  the 20th Saraswati Samman.

Gary Kirsten, the man who guided the Indian team in fulfilling its long time dream of winning a World Cup, today officially announced his decision in Mumbai to quit as the Coach of the Indian team. Terming the three-year stint with Team India as a tremendous experience, Gary said that he felt honoured the way he was accepted by Indians despite being a foreigner. He declined to take any other career option in the near future as he wants to spend more time with his family.

Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had said that his government will recommend to the Centre that Tendulkar should be given the Bharat Ratna, in view of his outstanding contribution to the game of cricket and also for winning the world cup title.
