Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi has favoured discontinuance of 48 hours door to door mobilisation of voters after the end of campaign. Addressing a conference in New Delhi yesterday, he said this is the period when money changes hands.
Why we say 48 hours ban on door-to-door should be stopped because that is the time when the envelopes change hands. When the money slips under the door. And the very logic which is given for 48 hours ban is that you have already done loud enough your campaign for 14 days or more and now allow the citizens, voters to sit quitely, brood and decide who to vote for.
Dr. Quraishi said, strong electoral reforms are needed to fight corruption during elections. Expressing disappointment over low enrolment of voters, Dr Quraishi said, people are losing interest in elections.

The Gujarat High Court has acquitted all the 12 accused, including main accused Asgar Ali, in the Haren Pandya murder case. The High court lambasted the investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation, CBI, saying the agency had botched up the investigations leading to enormous waste of time. The Court acquitted the accused of murder charges; however, they were convicted of smaller crimes under Sections 307, 120B of the IPC and were likely to be released from jail as they had already served their sentence against these offences.
The High Court had earlier reserved its verdict after completing the month-long hearing of arguments on August 12th. Our Ahmedabad Correspondent reports that former Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya was shot dead in 2003 near Law Garden area in Ahmedabad. The case was probed by the CBI, which nabbed 15 people out of the 19 named as accused for the murder to avenge the 2002 Gujarat riots. Earlier, a special POTA Court convicted 12 people, including Asgar Ali and awarded life imprisonment to nine of them. Two others got seven-year jail and another person got a five-year jail sentence.

The Karnataka High Court today rejected the anticipatory bail application of former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa in the land de-notification case. Justice L Narayanaswamy rejected the application filed by Yeddyurappa in anticipation of arrest in a private complaint by Sirajuddin Basha in the Lokayuktha court on de-notification and re-allotment of land in Bangalore. Justice K L Manjunath and Justice H S Kempanna dismissed the submission as not tenable under the provisions of the Constitution. Subsequently, the original petition and the application were dismissed. More from our correspondent:
Five complaints on land de-notification case, a case on upper Bhadra irrigation project tender allotment and Lokayuktha report on illegal mining, then the summons issued by Lokayuktha police and court against former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa sums up the legal battle being fought here under Prevention of Corruption Act. The petitions filed by Yeddyurappa seeking solace from the complaints against him are coming up in the High court by the day. In the land de-notification case it is alleged that Yeddyurappa misused his official position to de-notify land and allot it to benami names thereby benefiting his family members. In the Bhadra irrigation project it is alleged by the complainant that Yeddyurappa intervened to allot the tender to a bidder quoting higher price in return for kickback. The Lokayuktha report has alleged that mining companies were shown concessions in return for donations to trusts run by Yeddyurappa’s family members. Sudhindra,Air News,Bangalore.
