कानून मंत्री सलमान खुर्शीद ने कहा है कि टीम अन्ना ने भ्रष्टाचार विरोधी आंदोलन को व्यक्तिगत अभियान बना लिया है। श्री खुर्शीद ने आज चेन्नई में पत्रकारों से कहा कि समय आने पर देश उनको उचित जवाब देगा। उन्होंने अन्ना टीम की सदस्य किरण बेदी द्वारा कोयला खानों के आबंटन में कथित अनियमितताओं के लिए प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह पर किए गए हमले पर यह प्रतिक्रिया व्यक्त की। कानून मंत्री ने कहा कि टीम अन्ना के सदस्यों का, देश के लोकतंत्र के लिए रवैया सहयोगपूर्ण नहीं है और यह अच्छी बात नहीं है।
श्री खुर्शीद ने कहा कि उन्होंने भ्रष्टाचार पर सवाल उठाने के अच्छे इरादे से अपने अभियान की शुरुआत की थी लेकिन आज उन्होंने इसे व्यक्तिगत अभियान और महत्वाकांक्षा में बदल दिया है। उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि टीम अन्ना के सदस्यों ने अपने खिलाफ लगाए गए आरोपों की जांच की मांग कभी नहीं की है।

वित्तमंत्री प्रणब मुखर्जी ने कहा है कि भारत ने विदेशों में जमा कालेधन का ब्यौरा प्राप्त करने के लिए ३७ देशों से संधियां की हैं। पश्चिम बंगाल में खारग्राम में कांग्रेस कार्यकर्ताओं की एक बैठक में श्री मुखर्जी ने कहा कि भारतीयों द्वारा विदेशों में जमा किया गया सारा पैसा, काला-धन नही है। उन्होंने कहा कि हो सकता है कि व्यापारियों या व्यापारिक घरानों द्वारा यह पैसा जमा कराया गया हो। सही राशि का पता लगाने में समय लगेगा।
श्री मुखर्जी ने कहा कि सीरिया और लीबिया में अशांति के कारण पेट्रोलियम पदार्थों और उर्वरकों की कीमतें बढ़ी हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि इन दोनों देशों से पोटाश खरीदा जाता था, लेकिन वहां के हालात के चलते अब यह खरीद नहीं की जा रही है।
वित्तमंत्री ने कहा कि राज्यों को अतिरिक्त धन उपलब्ध कराने में केन्द्र के हाथ बंधे हुए हैं क्योंकि पेट्रोलियम पदार्थों और खाद्य सामग्री पर भारी सब्सिडी देनी पड़ती है।
उन्होंने कहा कि यू पी ए सरकार देश के सामाजिक-आर्थिक ढांचे को सुधारने के लिए वचनबद्ध है और वह इस दिशा में आवश्यक कदम उठा रही है।

देश में जल्दी ही बुलेट टे्रन चलने लगेगी। मुंबई और अहमदाबाद के बीच, तेज रफ्‌तार रेलगाड़ियों के गलियारे के प्रस्ताव को सरकार ने मंजूरी दे दी है। इससे इन दोनों नगरों के बीच ४९२ किलोमीटर लंबी रेल यात्रा का समय, वर्तमान सात घंटे से घटकर ढाई घंटे रह जायेगा। हमारे संवाददाता ने सरकारी सूत्रों के हवाले से खबर दी है कि हाल ही में प्रधानमंत्री डॉ० मनमोहन सिंह की अध्यक्षता में हुई बैठक में यह निर्णय किया गया। प्रस्तावित बुलेट ट्रेन की गति तीन सौ किलोमीटर प्रतिघंटा होगी।
जापान, जर्मनी, फ्रांस और चीन जैसे अनेक देशों में पहले से ही इस प्रकार की तेज+ रफतार रेलगाड़ियां चलाई जा रही हैं।

श्री एस वाई कुरैशी आज मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त के पद से सेवानिवृत्त हो गए। उन्होंने उम्मीद जताई कि पैसा देकर समाचार प्रकाशित करवाने को जल्दी ही संज्ञेय अपराध बना दिया जाएगा। पी टी आई के साथ इण्टरव्यू में श्री कुरैशी ने यह भी आशा व्यक्त की कि करीब दो दशक से लंबित पड़े प्र्रमुख चुनाव सुधार भी जल्दी ही लागू कर दिये जाएंगे।
आदर्श आचार संहिता को कानूनी दर्जा दिए जाने के सुझाव को खारिज करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि मौजूदा व्यवस्था बदलने के परिणाम अच्छे नहीं होंगे।
मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त की नियुक्ति के लिए एक चयन समिति बनाने के सुझाव के बारे में श्री कुरैशी ने कहा कि इसकी बजाय निर्वाचन आयुक्तों की नियुक्ति की व्यवस्था बेहतर होगी। व्यापक चयन के आधार पर निर्वाचन आयुक्तों की नियुक्ति हो और वरिष्ठतम आयुक्त को मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त बनाने का नियम होना चाहिए।

फ्रांस में आज संसदीय चुनाव का पहला चरण शुरू हो गया है। मतदान से पता चलता है कि ५७७ सदस्यों वाली नेशनल एसेम्बली में वाम दलों को मामूली बहुमत मिल सकता है। लेकिन यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि पूर्व राष्ट्रपति निकोलस सारकोजी की पार्टी यू एम पी के मुकाबले समाजवादियों और उनके सहयोगी दलों को चुनाव के पहले दौर में, जीतने लायक बहुमत मिल पायेगा।
आज शाम मतदान समाप्त होने के बाद, परिणामों की प्राथमिक जानकारी मिलने लगेगी। १७ जून को दूसरे और अंतिम दौर का मतदान होना है।

राष्ट्रपति पद के उम्मीदवार के चयन के बारे में यू पी ए, अपने सहयोगी दलों का अधिकतम समर्थन हासिल करने की कोशिश करेगी, क्योंकि ऐसे उम्मीदवार को ज्यादा से ज्यादा राजनीतिक दलों का विश्वास और समर्थन हासिल होना चाहिए। यह बात कानून मंत्री सलमान खुर्शीद ने आज चेन्नई में पत्रकारों से कही।
पिछले सप्ताह कांग्रेस ने पार्टी तथा यू पी ए अध्यक्ष सोनिया गांधी को राष्ट्रपति उम्मीदवार चुनने का अधिकार दिया था।
इस बीच, भाजपा प्रवक्ता शाहनवाज हुसैन ने हैदराबाद में पत्रकारों से कहा है कि सत्तारूढ़ यू पी ए गठबंधन द्वारा राष्ट्रपति पद के लिए अपना उम्मीदवार घोषित करने के बाद ही वह राष्ट्रपति चुनाव के बारे में अपनी रणनीति का खुलासा करेगी।

मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी की केन्द्रीय समिति ने आज अपने पोलित ब्यूरो को वाम और अन्य धर्मनिरपेक्ष दलों के साथ विचार-विमर्श के बाद राष्ट्रपति चुनाव के बारे में पार्टी की रणनीति तय करने का अधिकार दे दिया। नई दिल्ली में पार्टी की केन्द्रीय समिति की दो दिन की बैठक में आज यह निर्णय किया गया।
मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी और अन्य वामदल, राष्ट्रपति चुनाव के बारे में अब तक कुछ कहने से इंकार करते रहे हैं। उन्होंने यू पी ए सरकार से कहा था कि राष्ट्रपति पद के लिए कोई सर्वमान्य उम्मीदवार तय किया जाये।

उच्चतम न्यायालय ने व्यवस्था दी है कि दहेज हत्या जैसे जघन्य अपराधों के दोषियों को आजीवन कारावास से कम सज+ा नहीं दी जा सकती क्योंकि ऐसे मामलों में पीड़िता को बड़ी बर्बरता से मारा जाता है। न्यायमूर्ति स्वतंत्र कुमार और न्यायमूर्ति रंजन गोगोई की खंडपीठ ने पीड़ित महिला के पति और उसके भाई की याचिका नामंजूर कर दी। उच्चतम न्यायालय ने दोनो अपराधियों की आजीवन कारावास की सज+ा बरकरार रखी। इन दोनों ने १७ फरवरी १९९६ को उत्तराखंड के रूड़की में दहेज की मांग पूरी न होने पर महिला को जिंदा जला दिया था।

दिल्ली उच्च न्यायालय ने व्यवस्था दी है कि सरकारी अधिकारी विभागीय अनुशासनात्मक कार्यवाही और आपराधिक मामले में कथित भूमिका के लिए मुकदमें का सामना साथ-साथ कर सकता है। न्यायमूर्ति बदर दुर्रेज+ अहमद और न्यायमूर्ति वी के जैन की पीठ ने भारतीय विदेश सेवा के अधिकारी की याचिका खारिज कर दी। यह अधिकारी २००५ में कथित रूप से नौ लोगों को गैर कानूनी रूप से जर्मनी भेजने के मामले में लिप्त था। अदालत ने कहा है कि नियोक्ता को कर्मचारी के विरूद्ध कोई अनुशासनात्मक कार्रवाई करने से पहले आपराधिक न्यायालय के निर्णय की प्रतीक्षा नहीं करनी चाहिए।

म्यामां में पिछले एक सप्ताह से चल रही जातीय हिंसा को देखते हुए राष्ट्रपति थियेन सेन ने पश्चिमी राज्य राखीन में आपातकाल की घोषणा कर दी है। राष्ट्रपति ने आज टेलिविजन पर राष्ट्र के नाम अपने संबोधन में यह घोषणा की।
दो समुदायों के बीच हिंसा की घटनाओं में १७ लोग मारे जा चुके हैं और सैकड़ों संपत्तियों को नुकसान पहुंचा है।
राज्य के चार शहरों में झड़पें रोकने के लिए कर्फ्‌यू लगा दिया गया है।

उत्तर भारत में गर्मी फिर बढ़ गई है। अनेक क्षेत्रों में लू चल रही है। पंजाब और हरियाणा के अधिकतर क्षेत्रों में तापमान करीब ४० डिग्री सेल्सियस तक पहुंच गया है। राजस्थान भी भीषण गर्मी की चपेट में है। धौलपुर में अधिकतम तापमान ४४ डिग्री सेल्सियस रिकार्ड किया गया।
दिल्ली में तापमान सामान्य से अधिक यानी ४१ दशमलव ८ डिग्री सेल्सियस रिकार्ड किया गया। न्यूनतम तापमान २९ दशमलव ५ रहा।
आंध्र प्रदेश और तमिलनाडु के उत्तरी तटवर्ती क्षेत्रों, सिक्किम में गांन्टोक के कु++छ इलाकों तथा पश्चिम बंगाल के कुछ क्षेत्रों में भी लू का प्रकोप जारी है।

हरियाणा में राष्ट्रीय महिला आयोग की तीन सदस्यों की एक टीम ने आज रोहतक का दौरा किया। शहर में महिलाओं और बच्चों के कल्याण में लगी संस्था अपना घर में लड़कियों और बच्चों के साथ सामूहिक बलात्कार और अत्याचार के बारे में हाईकोर्ट की चार सदस्यों की टीम की चौंका देने वाली रिपोर्ट के बाद आयोग की सदस्य शफीना शफीक के नेतृत्व में यह दल रोहतक गया। टीम ने पीड़ितों से मुलाकात की और उनके बयान दर्ज किए। शफीना शफीक ने मीडिया से कहा कि आयोग इस मामले की जांच कर रहा है।

पंजाब में कांग्रेस और भारतीय जनता पार्टी न,े ऑपरेशन ब्लू स्टार के दौरान मारे गए लोगों के लिए, अमृतसर के स्वर्णमंदिर परिसर में स्मारक बनाने की, शिरोमणि गुरुद्वारा प्रबंधक कमेटी की योजना की, आलोचना की है। कांग्रेस नेता सुनील जाखड़ ने कहा कि अगर ऐसा स्मारक बनाया गया तो इससे राज्य के सामाजिक-आर्थिक और साम्प्रदायिक ढांचे को नुकसान पहुंचेगा और राज्य आतंकवाद के अंधकार भरे दौर में लौट जाएगा।
इस बीच भाजपा नेता जे. पी. नड्डा ने कहा है कि इससे राज्य में साम्प्रदायिक सद्भाव पर भी असर पड़ेगा।

Law Minister Salman Khurshid today said team Anna is converting the anti-corruption movement to launch a personal campaign. Talking to reporters in Chennai. Mr. Khurshid said that the country will give them a suitable answer when the time comes. His reaction came after Team Anna member Kiran Bedi today attacked Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in the alleged irregularities in coal block allocation. The Law minister said that team Anna members are not very helpful.

"I don't think they have right to ask questions and I don't think they are being very helpful and very good to democracy in our country. We all felt that they started-off with good idea, idea of containing corruption and questioning corruption was a good idea. But today, they are doing greatest disservice to this good idea by converting it into a personal campaign and a personal ambition".

Meanwhile, the BJP reiterated its support to team Anna's demand for probing the allegations of corruptions against the UPA government.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said that India has signed treaties with 37 countries to know the details of black money stashed abroad. Addressing a meeting of Congress workers in Khargram in West Bengal today Finance Minister said all the money kept by Indians abroad is not black money. He said it might have been deposited by businessmen or business houses. The process will take time to know the exact amount.

Finance Minister said the Centre's hands are tied to provide extra money to states as petro products and food need massive subsidy. Mr Mukherjee said the unrest in Syria and Libya had caused the increase in prices of petro products and fertilisers. He said the Potash was brought from these two countries but has now stopped due to political unrest there.

He said the UPA government is committed to improving the country's socio-economic infrastructure and is taking steps in the direction. However, there are delays as Congress has to depend on allies and there are differences of opinion at times.

The UPA leadership would take the maximum amount of consensus from its allies in selecting the candidate for the post of President, who must carry the conviction and support of as many political parties as possible. Law Minister Salman Khurshid said this while talking to reporters in Chennai today.

The Congress last week had authorised party president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to pick the presidential candidate.

The BJP, meanwhile, said it would disclose its strategy on the Presidential elections only after the ruling UPA coalition announces its candidate.

The CPI(M) Central Committee has authorised its Polit Bureau to formulate the party's strategy on Presidential polls after discussing with other Left and like-minded secular parties. This was decided at the two-day meeting of the party's Central Committee, which ended in Delhi today.

The Supreme Court has ruled that a sentence lesser than life term cannot be awarded to convicts for heinous offences like dowry death where the victim is killed in a brutal manner. A bench of justices Swatanter Kumar and Ranjan Gogoi rejected the plea of a victim's husband and brother-in-law for leniency. The apex court upheld the life sentence imposed on the accused for setting ablaze the victim to death in 1996 after she failed to meet their dowry demands at Roorkee in Uttarakhand.

Bullet trains may soon become a reality in the country with the government giving its nod to the proposal of a high-speed rail corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. This would reduce the travel time between the two financial hubs to two-and-half hours from seven hours. Our correspondent quoting official sources reports, the 492 km long Mumbai-Ahmedabad rail route is going to have the first bullet train as the proposed high-speed rail corridor has got the green signal in a high level meeting presided over by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh recently.

The proposed bullet train with a speed of 300 km per hour would drastically bring down the travel time. The project is estimated to cost 60,000 crore rupees.

There are many countries like Japan, Germany, France and China which are known for high-speed train technology.

In Haryana, a three member team of the National Women Commission led by Member of the Commission Shafeena Shafiq visited Rohtak today, after the report of the four member High court team revealed shocking details of women and children being gangraped and physically tortured in Apna Ghar shelter home of the city. The Commission team met the victims and recorded their statements. Talking to the media Shafeena Shafiq said that the commission is investigating the case and at this stage she could not reveal anything. The Shelter Home was sealed yesterday by the investigating team of the state police.

Deputy Chief Minister and senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar today said that the Maharashtra government is contemplating a ban on gutka and pan masala products. He was speaking at the the launch of the Rashtravadi Yuvati Congress, on the occasion of the 13th anniversary of the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party in Mumbai today. Mr. Pawar said that the state government would face a loss of Rs 100 crore in tax from gutka and pan masala, however it would be worth compromising to save the lives of youth in the state. He said that the proposal would soon be put before the Cabinet, and the state government will soon bring in legislation in this regard.

Outgoing Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi hoped that paid news will be made a cognizable offence. Mr Quraishi also hoped that some major electoral reforms pending for almost two decades will now become a reality soon.

In an interview with PTI, Mr Quraishi also rejected suggestions of giving statutory status to the Model Code of Conduct, arguing that upsetting the current system will have unwelcome repercussions.

On suggestions for having a collegium for appointment of the CEC, Quraishi suggested a different formulation. He said that a mechanism of credible consultations be set up for appointment of Election Commissioners instead, and not the CEC. Mr Quraishi demited office today.

In Myanmar, President Thein Sein has announced a state of emergency in the western state of Rakhine, following a week of sectarian attacks in the areas. The President issued the declaration in a short speech televised address today. A state of emergency effectively allows the military to take over administrative function in the affected areas.

A spate of violence involving two communities has left 17 people dead and hundreds of properties damaged. Officials announced a curfew in four towns in the state earlier, expressing concern about further clashes.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has hailed a decision by Eurozone Finance Ministers to help Spain shore up its struggling banks as a victory for the European common currency. The Eurozone ministers agreed to lend Madrid up to 100 billion Euros to help banks hit by bad property loans. The US and the International Monetary Fund also welcomed the move.

In the US , several people have been wounded in a shooting at an apartment complex in the Alabama town of Auburn. Local media say the shooting occurred last night at the University Heights complex, home to many students from nearby Auburn University. They say police are looking for the gunman.

The first round of parliamentary elections began in France today. The polls show that leftist parties could gain a slim majority of the 577 seats in the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament. However, it is not clear whether the Socialists and their allies will win the necessary majority in the first round against the conservative UMP party, led by former President Nicolas Sarkozy. Socialist President Francois Hollande unseated Sarkozy in a May 6 runoff election.

After a brief lull, mercury rose again in North India with heat wave sweeping several parts of the region. In Punjab and Haryana, hot weather conditions continued to prevail with maximum temperature hovering around 40 degree Celsius at most of places in the region today. Rajasthan also continued to reel under heat wave with Dholpur recording a maximum of 44 deg Centigrade.

Delights today experienced a hot and humid day with the maximum temperature rose to above normal. The maximum temperature was recorded 41.8 degrees, three degree above normal while the minimum settled at 29.5 degree Celsius which is two degree above normal. Heat wave conditions prevailed in coastal Andhra Pradesh and also some parts of Sikkim, West Bengal and of north coastal Tamil Nadu.

In Punjab, the Congress and BJP criticised the SGPC's move to set up a memorial for those killed during Operation Bluestar in the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar. The National Advisory Council, NAC has recommended giving tax benefits to private employers of persons with disabilities. Giving its suggestions on the draft Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill, the NAC, chaired by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi has also suggested extending subsidies and financial incentives for starting small scale income generation activities by household of persons with disabilities. In a recent communication to the government, the advisory panel also suggested financial and tax benefits to private employers of Persons with Disabilities.
