पश्चिम बंगाल में विधान सभा चुनाव के पहले चरण का मतदान शांतिपूर्वक चल रहा है। इस चरण में उत्तर बंगाल के छह जिलों - कूच बिहार, जलपाईगुड़ी, दार्जिलिंग, उत्तरी दीनाजपुर, दक्षिणी दीनाजपुर और मालदा के चौवन निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों के लिए मतदान शाम पांच बजे तक चलेगा। कुल बारह हजार एक सौ इकतीस मतदान केन्द्रों में से १८ सौ संवेदनशील घोषित किये गए हैं। स्वतंत्र और निष्पक्ष चुनाव सुनिश्चित करने के लिए सुरक्षा के व्यापक प्रबंध किये गए है।
असम में तीन विधानसभा क्षेत्रों के छह मतदान केन्द्रों पर आज फिर वोट डाले जा रहे हैं। मतदान दिन में तीन बजे तक चलेगा। रांगिया के छह और भवानीपुर तथा उदालगुड़ी के एक-एक मतदान केन्द्र पर पुनर्मतदान कराया जा रहा है। राज्य विधानसभा के लिए ११ मार्च को हुए दूसरे चरण के मतदान के दौरान इन केन्द्रों पर हिंसा और चुनावी गड़बड़ियों की शिकायतें मिली थीं। वोटों की गिनती तेरह मई को होगी।
जम्मू कश्मीर में पंचायत चुनाव के दूसरे चरण में कल बड़ी संख्या में मतदाताओं ने वोट डाले। इस चरण में राज्य के आठ ब्लाकों में दो सौ पचहत्तर सरपंचों और दो हजार ३१ पंचों को चुनने के लिए वोट डाले गए। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है, इस चरण में बयासी प्रतिशत से अधिक मतदान हुआ।

उडी, आहूरा, नाल, नागांव और पोलू के ५ ब्लॉक कश्मीर घाटी में और आर एस पोरा छिन्नेनी और विजयपुर के तीन ब्लॉक जम्मू क्षेत्र में हैं। कश्मीर घाटी में मतदान का प्रतिशत पहले चरण के मुकाबले में बेहतर रहा बल्कि जम्मू के तीन ब्लॉकों से भी अधिक रहा है। भारी वर्षा के बावजूद बड़ी संख्या में लोगों ने जिनमें महिलाओं की संख्या लगभग पुरूषों के बराबर थी अपने मताधिकार का प्रयोग किया। राज्य में दस वर्ष के बाद पंचायती चुनाव की यह प्रक्रिया १६ चरणों में हो रही है, और इस संवेदनशील राज्य में अब तक के दो चरणों में लोगों की भारी शिरकत खासी उत्साहजनक है। मुश्ताक अहमद तांत्रे, आकाशवाणी समाचार श्रीनगर।
जन लोकपाल विधेयक की मसौदा समिति के सदस्य प्रशांत भूषण ने दावा किया है कि शांति भूषण, मुलायम सिंह और अमर सिंह के बीच बातचीत वाली सीडी जाली है। कल नई दिल्ली में श्री भूषण ने कहा कि यह सीडी विधेयक की कार्यवाही में अड़ंगा डालने की एक कोशिश है।
सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता अन्ना हजारे ने कहा है कि संसद सर्वोच्च है और अगर वह लोकपाल विधेयक को खारिज कर देती है, तो वे उसका फैसला मंजूर करेंगे। नई दिल्ली में श्री हजारे ने कहा कि अगर उन्हें लगा है कि सरकार सही रास्ते पर है तो वे लोकपाल विधेयक को पारित करने के लिए रखी गई १५ अगस्त की समय सीमा को बढ़ाने पर भी विचार कर सकते हैं।
उन्होंने कहा कि वे लोकपाल विधेयक पर व्यापक विचार-विमर्श के लिए तैयार हैं और इसमें देश के राजनीतिक नेतृत्व को भी शामिल करना चाहते हैं।

समुद्र डकैती से जुड़ी गम्भीर मानवीय और आर्थिक समस्याओं पर विचार करने के लिए आज दुबई में पचास से अधिक देशों की सरकारों और उद्योग जगत के प्रतिनिधियों की बैठक हो रही है।
संयुक्त अरब अमारात के विदेश मंत्री शेख अब्दुल्ला बिन जायद अल नाहियान दो दिन की इस बैठक का उद्घाटन करेंगे। वैश्विक चुनौती, क्षेत्रीय उपाय-समुद्री डकैती के प्रति साझा रणनीति शीर्षक से इस बैठक में सरकारी प्रतिनिधियों के अलावा संयुक्त राष्ट्र, अंतर्राष्ट्रीय जहाजरानी संगठन और समुद्री सुरक्षा तथा सामुदायिक विकास से जुड़े विशेषज्ञ भी हिस्सा लेंगे।
अमरीका के दक्षिण-पूर्व के छह राज्यों में जबरदस्त तूफान में ४४ लोग मारे गए हैं। मृतकों की संख्या बढ़ने की आशंका है। राहत और बचाव कार्य जारी है। बृहस्पतिवार को इस तूफान ने ओकलाहामा, अरकनसॉ, मिसीसिपी, अलाबामा, जार्जिया और नॉर्थ कैरोलिना में तबाही मचाई थी, लेकिन शनिवार को इसने नॉर्थ कैरोलिना में ज्यादा तबाही मचाई। कैरोलिना और अलाबामा राज्यों में आपातकाल की घोषणा की गयी है।
विश्व बैंक के अध्यक्ष रॉबर्ट जोएलिक ने चेतावनी दी है कि खाने की चीजों की बढ़ती कीमतें विश्वभर में गरीबों के लिए एक बड़ा खतरा बनती जा रही हैं। जोएलिक का कहना है कि बढ़ती महंगाई के कारण पूरा विश्व एक बड़े संकट के बहुत करीब आ चुका है। वाशिंगटन में दुनिया की बीस बड़ी अर्थव्यवस्थाओं के वित्त क्षेत्र के प्रमुखों की बैठक के समापन के बाद रॉबर्ट जोएलिक ने कहा कि पिछले एक साल में करीब साढ़े चार करोड़ लोग गरीबी के चंगुल में धकेले जा चुके हैं।
हिमाचल प्रदेश के पहाड़ी इलाकों में हिमपात और देश के उत्तरी भागों में कुछ स्थानों पर हुई वर्षा से पूरे क्षेत्र के तापमान में गिरावट आई है। हिमाचल प्रदेश के लाहौल-स्पीति जिले में केलौंग में पांच सेंटीमीटर बर्फ पड़ी। मंडी, धर्मशाला और सुंदर नगर में मूसलाधार बारिश हुई।
कल राजधानी दिल्ली के ज्यादातर इलाकों में बारिश हुई। वर्षा के कारण तापमान में गिरावट आई।

जम्मू-कश्मीर में ३०० किलोमीटर लम्बा जम्मू-श्रीनगर राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग बंद कर दिया गया है। भारी वर्षा के कारण रामबन जिले में पहाड़ों से चट्टाने टूटकर गिरने के कारण वाहनों का आना-जाना रोक दिया गया है। रामबन में सौ से अधिक वाहन फंसे हुए हैं।
मुबंई-दिल्ली राजधानी एक्सप्रैस की पैंट्री कार सहित तीन बोगियों में आज मध्य प्रदेश के रतलाम जिलें में आलोट और थूरिया के बीच आग लग गई। रेलवे के प्रवक्ता अनिल सक्सेना ने आकाशवाणी को बताया कि आग बुझा दी गई है और सभी यात्री सुरक्षित हैं।

Polling for the first phase of Assembly elections in West Bengal is progressing smoothly. The polling, which started at 7 this morning, will end at 5 pm. Voting is taking place in 54 constituencies spread over six North Bengal districts of Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, North Dinjapur, South Dinajpur and Malda. 364 candidates including 10 ministers of the present government are in the fray. Inter-state and International borders along North Bengal have been sealed to prevent the entry of unwanted persons. 28 general observers, 9 expenditure observers and 3 police observers will constantly monitor the polling.

Besides State Police around 525 companies central force have been deployed at different parts of North Bengal to ensure free and fair voting. All the polling booths in six districts are being manned by the central force. Out of total polling stations around 1,800 have been identified as critical. Large number voters turned up at different polling booths much before of polling began. Observers are also touring vigorously in their respective areas to monitor the situation. In Assam, re-polling is underway at six booths in three Assembly constituencies today. Out of the six, four booths are in Rangiya and one each in Bhawanipur and Udalguri Assembly segments. The polling, which began at 7 am, will continue till 3 pm. Repolling was ordered at these booths following reports of violence and electoral mal-practices during the second phase of Assembly elections on the 11th of this month. The counting of votes will take place on the 13th of next month.
In Jammu and Kashmir amid a heavy downpour, over eighty two per cent polling was recorded in the second phase of Panchayat elections yesterday. Polling was held in five blocks of the Valley one block each in Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Kupwara and Budgam districts. Our Srinagar correspondent reports that peaceful and brisk polling in Panchayat election augurs well for the sensitive border state.
The second phase of Panchayat elections saw even more enthusiasm among voters in the first phase. Braving inclement weather polling in all the five blocks in Kashmir valley remain brisk and peaceful. In border district of Kupwara 85 percent polling was recorded in the block Ahura. It was even higher in another border block of set 87. Similar pattern was witnessed in other three blocks of Lar, Nagam and Pollum in Kashmir valley with 86, 77 and 82 per cent polling. The polling was same in three blocks of Jammu division. Civil society member in the drafting committee of the Jan Lokpal Bill Prashant Bhushan has claimed that the CD containing conversation between Shanti Bhushan, Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh is bogus and has been fabricated. Talking to the reporters in New Delhi yesterday, Mr Bhushan called the CD a part of an attempt that has been launched to derail the proceedings of drafting of the bill.
There are atleast six clear signs of doctrine of either electronic editing or gaps in the conversation suggesting that these are are different conversations recorded at different points of time. We are going to file a contempt petition in the Supreme Court within the next day or two.
Mr. Bhushan also said that he has got the CD verified from two different high level forensic laboratories which have confirmed the digital mixing of two different audio tracks in a CD.
Three coaches including the pantry car of the 12951 Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express caught fire early this morning between Alot and Thuria in Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh. The fire, which started at 3 am in the pantry car, soon spread to coach B-6 and B-7. Railway Spokesman Anil Saxena told AIR that the fire has been put out and all passengers are safe.
We have separated those affected coaches from the main wreck of the train and the rear portion and the front portion they have been moved respectively. The front portion has been moved to Thuria Station from where it is proceeding to Chaumala and the rear portion has been moved to Vikramagarh Alot station, which has already reached there. Then the entire wreck will be combined at Chaumala and will b;e further taken to destination that is Delhi. All the relief and rescue operations is on full swing there. The Ministry of Railway has also decided to give an ex-gratia amount of Rs.5,000 each to the passengers of the affected coach i.e., coach No. B-6 and B-7. All passengers of this train are safe. There is no report of any injury in the accident.

Government and industry leaders representing over 50 countries will meet in Dubai today to seek solutions to the serious humanitarian and economic issue of piracy. The widespread threat of piracy and collaborative means to eradicate it, will be discussed during this public-private counter piracy conference.
According to a statement, the UAE’s minister of foreign affairs Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan will inaugurate the two-day conference which has been co-convened by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and DP World.

The conference is being held just days after maritime watchdog, International Maritime Bureau had said that figures for piracy in the past three months are higher than it was ever recorded during same period. During the conference, both public and private initiatives to counter the devastating effects of piracy on the captives and their families and communities as well as the threat it poses to peace and security internationally will be discussed. According to the organisers, the Panel discussions will also tackle root causes of piracy, relevant international law issues, and opportunities of furthering civilian-military cooperation to ward off attacks. In Afghanistan, eight NATO service members have been killed in insurgent attacks. It was one of the deadliest attack for the military coalition this year. President Goodluck Jonathan has won Nigeria's presidential election by securing 60.02 per cent of the vote. Jonathan, 64, beat his main rival Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC by a wide margin, with Bukhari capturing only 30 per cent of the vote. The country's Independent National Electoral Commission said, the incumbent president won in more than 23 out of the 36 states securing all the votes in the southern region and in some states in the northern region and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
In the United States,44 people have been killed as tornadoes kicked up by powerful storms have ripped across six south-eastern states. Rescue workers searched for survivors amid fears that the death toll could rise.
The storm, which first hit on Thursday, has made its way through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina. A state of emergency was declared in North Carolina and also in Alabanma.
Snowfall in the higher reaches and isolated showers in many parts of north India brought significant decline in temperatures across the region. Keylong in Himachal's Lahaul and Spiti district experienced 5 cm of snow, while Kalpa in neighbouring Kinnaur witnessed heavy sleet.
In Uttarakhand, Dehra Dun and its adjoining areas were hit by hailstorm, causing damage to litchi and mango crops. AIR Dehradun Correspondent reports that the hailstorm which lasted for about 15-20 minutes last evening also brought down the temperature by 5 to 6 degrees.
According to reports, higher reacheas of the state including Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamnotri, Harsil and Tungnath have received fresh snowfall while rainfall occurred in some other parts of the state. As per report Dehradun received about 20 milimetre rainfall during last 24 hours. Agriculture experts have said that hailstorms winds might damage the wheat crop in some areas. In Jammu and Kashmir, the 300-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway, connecting the Valley with the rest of the country, was closed for vehicular traffic due to pieces of rocks falling from hilltops in the wake of landslides triggered by heavy rain in Ramban district. Due to closure of traffic, vehicles are stranded at Ramban.

The SSP (Traffic) National Highway Syed Kifayat Haider told AIR that the traffic will remain suspended on the highway untill the Decon Authority clears the road of landslides. The 54 and a half hour count down for the launch of PSLV C16 began at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre Sri Harikota this morning. ISRO spokesperson S Satish told our correspondent that the count down began at 3.42 AM and was proceeding smoothly. The launch is slated for 10.12 on Wednesday. PSLV C16 will put in orbit three satellites including India's resource-sat 2, an Indo-Russian satellite youth-sat and a micro satellite X sat.

पश्चिम बंगाल में विधान सभा चुनाव के पहले चरण का मतदान शांतिपूर्वक चल रहा है। इस चरण में उत्तर बंगाल के छह जिलों - कूच बिहार, जलपाईगुड़ी, दार्जिलिंग, उत्तरी दीनाजपुर, दक्षिणी दीनाजपुर और मालदा के चौवन निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों के लिए मतदान शाम पांच बजे तक चलेगा। कुल बारह हजार एक सौ इकतीस मतदान केन्द्रों में से १८ सौ संवेदनशील घोषित किये गए हैं। स्वतंत्र और निष्पक्ष चुनाव सुनिश्चित करने के लिए सुरक्षा के व्यापक प्रबंध किये गए है।
असम में तीन विधानसभा क्षेत्रों के छह मतदान केन्द्रों पर आज फिर वोट डाले जा रहे हैं। मतदान दिन में तीन बजे तक चलेगा। रांगिया के छह और भवानीपुर तथा उदालगुड़ी के एक-एक मतदान केन्द्र पर पुनर्मतदान कराया जा रहा है। राज्य विधानसभा के लिए ११ मार्च को हुए दूसरे चरण के मतदान के दौरान इन केन्द्रों पर हिंसा और चुनावी गड़बड़ियों की शिकायतें मिली थीं। वोटों की गिनती तेरह मई को होगी।
जम्मू कश्मीर में पंचायत चुनाव के दूसरे चरण में कल बड़ी संख्या में मतदाताओं ने वोट डाले। इस चरण में राज्य के आठ ब्लाकों में दो सौ पचहत्तर सरपंचों और दो हजार ३१ पंचों को चुनने के लिए वोट डाले गए। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है, इस चरण में बयासी प्रतिशत से अधिक मतदान हुआ।

जन लोकपाल विधेयक की मसौदा समिति के सदस्य प्रशांत भूषण ने दावा किया है कि शांति भूषण, मुलायम सिंह और अमर सिंह के बीच बातचीत वाली सीडी जाली है। कल नई दिल्ली में श्री भूषण ने कहा कि यह सीडी विधेयक की कार्यवाही में अड़ंगा डालने की एक कोशिश है।
सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता अन्ना हजारे ने कहा है कि संसद सर्वोच्च है और अगर वह लोकपाल विधेयक को खारिज कर देती है, तो वे उसका फैसला मंजूर करेंगे। नई दिल्ली में श्री हजारे ने कहा कि अगर उन्हें लगा है कि सरकार सही रास्ते पर है तो वे लोकपाल विधेयक को पारित करने के लिए रखी गई १५ अगस्त की समय सीमा को बढ़ाने पर भी विचार कर सकते हैं।
उन्होंने कहा कि वे लोकपाल विधेयक पर व्यापक विचार-विमर्श के लिए तैयार हैं और इसमें देश के राजनीतिक नेतृत्व को भी शामिल करना चाहते हैं।

अमरीका के दक्षिण-पूर्व के छह राज्यों में जबरदस्त तूफान में ४४ लोग मारे गए हैं। मृतकों की संख्या बढ़ने की आशंका है। राहत और बचाव कार्य जारी है। बृहस्पतिवार को इस तूफान ने ओकलाहामा, अरकनसॉ, मिसीसिपी, अलाबामा, जार्जिया और नॉर्थ कैरोलिना में तबाही मचाई थी, लेकिन शनिवार को इसने नॉर्थ कैरोलिना में ज्यादा तबाही मचाई। कैरोलिना और अलाबामा राज्यों में आपातकाल की घोषणा की गयी है।

हिमाचल प्रदेश के पहाड़ी इलाकों में हिमपात और देश के उत्तरी भागों में कुछ स्थानों पर हुई वर्षा से पूरे क्षेत्र के तापमान में गिरावट आई है। हिमाचल प्रदेश के लाहौल-स्पीति जिले में केलौंग में पांच सेंटीमीटर बर्फ पड़ी। मंडी, धर्मशाला और सुंदर नगर में मूसलाधार बारिश हुई।
कल राजधानी दिल्ली के ज्यादातर इलाकों में बारिश हुई। वर्षा के कारण तापमान में गिरावट आई।

जम्मू-कश्मीर में ३०० किलोमीटर लम्बा जम्मू-श्रीनगर राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग बंद कर दिया गया है। भारी वर्षा के कारण रामबन जिले में पहाड़ों से चट्टाने टूटकर गिरने के कारण वाहनों का आना-जाना रोक दिया गया है। रामबन में सौ से अधिक वाहन फंसे हुए हैं।

Polling for the first phase of Assembly elections in West Bengal is progressing smoothly. The polling, which started at 7 this morning, will end at 5 pm. Voting is taking place in 54 constituencies spread over six North Bengal districts of Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, North Dinjapur, South Dinajpur and Malda. 364 candidates including 10 ministers of the present government are in the fray. Inter-state and International borders along North Bengal have been sealed to prevent the entry of unwanted persons. 28 general observers, 9 expenditure observers and 3 police observers will constantly monitor the polling.

Besides State Police around 525 companies central force have been deployed at different parts of North Bengal to ensure free and fair voting. All the polling booths in six districts are being manned by the central force. Out of total polling stations around 1,800 have been identified as critical. Large number voters turned up at different polling booths much before of polling began. Observers are also touring vigorously in their respective areas to monitor the situation. In Assam, re-polling is underway at six booths in three Assembly constituencies today. Out of the six, four booths are in Rangiya and one each in Bhawanipur and Udalguri Assembly segments. The polling, which began at 7 am, will continue till 3 pm. Repolling was ordered at these booths following reports of violence and electoral mal-practices during the second phase of Assembly elections on the 11th of this month. The counting of votes will take place on the 13th of next month.
In Jammu and Kashmir amid a heavy downpour, over eighty two per cent polling was recorded in the second phase of Panchayat elections yesterday. Polling was held in five blocks of the Valley one block each in Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Kupwara and Budgam districts. Our Srinagar correspondent reports that peaceful and brisk polling in Panchayat election augurs well for the sensitive border state.
The second phase of Panchayat elections saw even more enthusiasm among voters in the first phase. Braving inclement weather polling in all the five blocks in Kashmir valley remain brisk and peaceful. In border district of Kupwara 85 percent polling was recorded in the block Ahura. It was even higher in another border block of set 87. Similar pattern was witnessed in other three blocks of Lar, Nagam and Pollum in Kashmir valley with 86, 77 and 82 per cent polling. The polling was same in three blocks of Jammu division. Civil society member in the drafting committee of the Jan Lokpal Bill Prashant Bhushan has claimed that the CD containing conversation between Shanti Bhushan, Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh is bogus and has been fabricated. Talking to the reporters in New Delhi yesterday, Mr Bhushan called the CD a part of an attempt that has been launched to derail the proceedings of drafting of the bill.
There are atleast six clear signs of doctrine of either electronic editing or gaps in the conversation suggesting that these are are different conversations recorded at different points of time. We are going to file a contempt petition in the Supreme Court within the next day or two.
Mr. Bhushan also said that he has got the CD verified from two different high level forensic laboratories which have confirmed the digital mixing of two different audio tracks in a CD.
Three coaches including the pantry car of the 12951 Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express caught fire early this morning between Alot and Thuria in Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh. The fire, which started at 3 am in the pantry car, soon spread to coach B-6 and B-7. Railway Spokesman Anil Saxena told AIR that the fire has been put out and all passengers are safe.
We have separated those affected coaches from the main wreck of the train and the rear portion and the front portion they have been moved respectively. The front portion has been moved to Thuria Station from where it is proceeding to Chaumala and the rear portion has been moved to Vikramagarh Alot station, which has already reached there. Then the entire wreck will be combined at Chaumala and will b;e further taken to destination that is Delhi. All the relief and rescue operations is on full swing there. The Ministry of Railway has also decided to give an ex-gratia amount of Rs.5,000 each to the passengers of the affected coach i.e., coach No. B-6 and B-7. All passengers of this train are safe. There is no report of any injury in the accident.

Government and industry leaders representing over 50 countries will meet in Dubai today to seek solutions to the serious humanitarian and economic issue of piracy. The widespread threat of piracy and collaborative means to eradicate it, will be discussed during this public-private counter piracy conference.
According to a statement, the UAE’s minister of foreign affairs Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan will inaugurate the two-day conference which has been co-convened by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and DP World.

The conference is being held just days after maritime watchdog, International Maritime Bureau had said that figures for piracy in the past three months are higher than it was ever recorded during same period. During the conference, both public and private initiatives to counter the devastating effects of piracy on the captives and their families and communities as well as the threat it poses to peace and security internationally will be discussed. According to the organisers, the Panel discussions will also tackle root causes of piracy, relevant international law issues, and opportunities of furthering civilian-military cooperation to ward off attacks. In Afghanistan, eight NATO service members have been killed in insurgent attacks. It was one of the deadliest attack for the military coalition this year. President Goodluck Jonathan has won Nigeria's presidential election by securing 60.02 per cent of the vote. Jonathan, 64, beat his main rival Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC by a wide margin, with Bukhari capturing only 30 per cent of the vote. The country's Independent National Electoral Commission said, the incumbent president won in more than 23 out of the 36 states securing all the votes in the southern region and in some states in the northern region and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
In the United States,44 people have been killed as tornadoes kicked up by powerful storms have ripped across six south-eastern states. Rescue workers searched for survivors amid fears that the death toll could rise.
The storm, which first hit on Thursday, has made its way through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina. A state of emergency was declared in North Carolina and also in Alabanma.
Snowfall in the higher reaches and isolated showers in many parts of north India brought significant decline in temperatures across the region. Keylong in Himachal's Lahaul and Spiti district experienced 5 cm of snow, while Kalpa in neighbouring Kinnaur witnessed heavy sleet.
In Uttarakhand, Dehra Dun and its adjoining areas were hit by hailstorm, causing damage to litchi and mango crops. AIR Dehradun Correspondent reports that the hailstorm which lasted for about 15-20 minutes last evening also brought down the temperature by 5 to 6 degrees.
According to reports, higher reacheas of the state including Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamnotri, Harsil and Tungnath have received fresh snowfall while rainfall occurred in some other parts of the state. As per report Dehradun received about 20 milimetre rainfall during last 24 hours. Agriculture experts have said that hailstorms winds might damage the wheat crop in some areas. In Jammu and Kashmir, the 300-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway, connecting the Valley with the rest of the country, was closed for vehicular traffic due to pieces of rocks falling from hilltops in the wake of landslides triggered by heavy rain in Ramban district. Due to closure of traffic, vehicles are stranded at Ramban.

The SSP (Traffic) National Highway Syed Kifayat Haider told AIR that the traffic will remain suspended on the highway untill the Decon Authority clears the road of landslides. He said once the road is clear, strandid traffic at Ramban, Qazigund and other places will be allowed to move towards respective destination. Khurshid Padroo from Kulgam, Kashmir.
Rain also lashed parts of Punjab and Haryana but it made farmers worried as wheat harvesting picks up in the two states. Light showers drenched Chandigarh too.

There have been further protests in Syria, a day after President Bashar al-Assad said the long standing emergency laws would be lifted. Witnesses said four people were killed and dozens others injured when security forces opened fire on a funeral procession in Talbiseh district of central Syria.
The 54 and a half hour count down for the launch of PSLV C16 began at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre Sri Harikota this morning. ISRO spokesperson S Satish told our correspondent that the count down began at 3.42 AM and was proceeding smoothly. The launch is slated for 10.12 on Wednesday. PSLV C16 will put in orbit three satellites including India's resource-sat 2, an Indo-Russian satellite youth-sat and a micro satellite X sat.
