पश्चिम बंगाल में विधानसभा चुनाव के लिए पहले दौर के मतदान में कल उत्तर बंगाल के छह जिलों में 54 सीटों के लिए वोट डाले जाएंगे। राज्य के मुख्य चुनाव अधिकारी ने बताया कि अधिकांश मतदान कर्मी मतदान केन्द्रों पर पहुंच गए हैं। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि 97 लाख 46 हजार से अधिक मतदाता तीन सौ 64 उम्मीदवारों के भाग्य का फैसला करेंगे।
स्वतंत्र और निष्पक्ष मतदान के लिए उत्तर बंगाल के विभिन्न हिस्सों में केन्द्रीय बलों की लगभग 525 कंपनी तैनात की गई है। संवदेनशील केन्द्रों पर विशेष चौकसी रखी जा रही है।
बारह हजार 131 मतदान केन्द्रों में से एक हजार 800 सौ को संवदेनशील घोषित किया गया है। उत्तरी बंगाल के साथ लगने वाली राज्य और अंतर्राष्ट्रीय सीमाओं को सील कर दिया गया है। कल के मतदान में वर्तमान सरकार के दस मंत्रियों का भाग्य इलेक्ट्रिक वोटिंग मशीनों में बंद हो जाएगा।

उधर, दार्जिलिंग से हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि वहां 6 विधानसभा क्षेत्रों में अर्धसैनिक बलों की 72 कम्पनी तैनात की गई है।
दार्जिलिंग जिले के 6 विधानसभा क्षेत्रों में शांतिपूर्ण मतदान सम्पन्न कराने के उद्देश्य से 72 कम्पनी अर्धसैनिक बलों की तैनात किया गया है, यहां 4 महिला सहित 38 प्रत्याशी चुनाव मैदान में हैं। जिले में स्थापित एक हजार 725 मतदान केन्द्रों में 680 केन्द्रों को अति संवेदनशील केन्द्रों के रूप में लिया गया है और इन केन्द्रों में चुनाव के दौरान कोई गड़बड़ी की वारदात न हो इसके लिए विशेष व्यवस्था की गई है। इसी बीच सभी चुनाव कर्मी सूदूर वर्तीय और दूगर्म क्षेत्रों में स्थापित 16 मतदान केन्द्रों की संचालन के लिए हुए प्रस्थान मतदानकर्मी आज शाम तक सुरक्षित तौर अपने-अपने निर्धारित केन्द्रों पर पहुंचने की खबर है। आकाशवाणी समाचार के लिए एस.बी. सुनवार, दार्जिलिंग से
जम्मू कश्मीर में पंचायत चुनाव के दूसरे चरण में आज बड़ी संख्या में मतदाताओं ने वोट डाले। इस चरण में राज्य के आठ ब्लाकों में दो सौ पचहत्तर सरपंचों और दो हजार 31 पंचों को चुनने के लिए वोट डाले गए। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है, इस चरण में बयासी प्रतिशत से अधिक मतदान हुआ।
पंचायती चुनाव के दूसरे चरण में आज जम्मू कश्मीर के 8 ब्लॉकों में 82 प्रतिशत मतदान हुआ है, इनमें से उडी, आहूरा, नाल, नागांव और पोलू के 5 ब्लॉक कश्मीर घाटी में और आर एस पोरा छिन्नेनी और विजयपुर के तीन ब्लॉक जम्मू क्षेत्र में हैं। कश्मीर घाटी में मतदान का प्रतिशत पहले चरण के मुकाबले में बेहतर रहा बल्कि जम्मू के तीन ब्लॉकों से भी अधिक रहा है। आज भारी वर्षा के बावजूद बड़ी संख्या में लोगों ने जिनमें महिलाओं की संख्या लगभग पुरूषों के बराबर थी अपने मताधिकार का प्रयोग किया। उल्लेखनीय है कि राज्य में दस वर्ष के बाद पंचायती चुनाव की यह प्रक्रिया 16 चरणों में हो रही है, और इस संवेदनशील राज्य के दो चरणों में लोगों की भारी शरकत खासी उत्साहजनक है। मुश्ताक अहमद तांत्रे, आकाशवाणी समाचार श्रीनगर
वित्त वर्ष 2010-11 में प्रत्यक्ष कर और अप्रत्यक्ष कर की वसूली संशोधित अनुमानों से कहीं अधिक हुई है। ठोस आर्थिक विकास के चलते 7 सात लाख 92 हजार करोड़ रुपये प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष कर के रूप में मिले हैं। ये पिछले वर्ष के संशोधित अनुमान सात लाख 80 हजार करोड रूपये से भी 12 हजार करोड़ रुपये से भी अधिक है। वित्त मंत्रालय के अनुसार प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष कर की वसूली सात लाख 45 हजार करोड रुपये होने का अनुमान था। इनमें से प्रत्यक्ष कर वसूली चार लाख 50 हजार करोड़ और अप्रत्यक्ष कर वसूली 3 लाख 42 हजार करोड़ रुपये रही। अधिकारियों का कहना है कि अधिक कर मिलने से यह पैसा न केवल विकास परियोजनाओं पर खर्च हो सकेगा बल्कि इससे वित्तीय घाटा भी कम होगा।
पूर्वी लीबिया से मिली रिपोर्टों में कहा गया है कि कर्नल गद्दाफी की वफादार सेना विद्रोहियों के कब्जे वाले अजदाबिया शहर पर गोलीबारी कर रही है और शहर के पश्चिमी प्रवेश द्वार के नजदीक दर्जनों रॉकेट छोडे गए। इस हमले के कारण रिहायशी इलाकों से सैकड़ों लोगों और विद्रोहियों को वहां से भागने के लिए मजबूर होना पड़ा। अभी यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि हमले में कितने लोग मारे गए हैं। कर्नल गद्दाफी की सेना ने पश्चिमी शहर मिसराता पर भी हमले तेज कर दिए हैं जिनमें छह लोग मारे गए हैं और सैंतालिस अन्य घायल हो गए हैं।
गद्दाफी की वफादार सेना ने लगातार चौथे दिन मिसराता पर गोलीबारी की। लड़ाई के कारण शहर में खाद्यान्न का गंभीर संकट पैदा हो गया है। समझा जाता है कि पिछले कई सप्ताहों से शहर में हो रही गोलीबारी और बमबारी में सैकड़ो लोग मारे गए हैं।
क्षतिग्रस्त जापानी परमाणु संयंत्र को चलाने वाली कंपनी, टेपको ने कहा है कि संयंत्र के संकट पर इस साल के अंत तक ही काबू पाया जा सकेगा। कंपनी ने कहा है कि वह अगले तीन महीनों में फुकुशिमा से निकलने वाले विकिरण को कम करना चाहती है। टोक्यो में संवाददाता सम्मेलन में टेपको के अध्यक्ष ने कहा कि कंपनी को उम्मीद है कि निकलने वाले विकिरण को अगले तीन महीनों में धीरे-धीरे कम कर लिया जाएगा।
पाकिस्तान में कराची में राजनीतिक हिंसा में दस लोग मारे गए हैं। पुलिस तथा बचाव अधिकारियों के अनुसार मरने वालों में जमाते इस्लामी पार्टी का एक पूर्व वाइस नाजिम भी शामिल है।
पाकिस्तान के गृह मंत्री रहमान मलिक ने कहा है कि कानून लागू करने वाली एजेंसियों को शहर में जबरन वसूली करने वालों और भाड़े पर हत्या करने वालों को देखते ही गोली मारने के आदेश दिए गए हैं।

नेपाल में संविधान सभा की 28 राजनीतिक पार्टियों ने आज अपनी बैठक में संविधान का मसौदा तैयार करने के लिए गठित उप-समिति का कार्यकाल बढ़ाने की पुष्टि कर दी। उप समिति का गठन संविधान का मसौदा तैयार करने में विभिन्न दलों के बीच मतभेदों को दूर करने के लिए किया गया। उप समिति का कार्यकाल तीसरी बार बढ़ाया गया है।
पूर्व राष्ट्रपति डाक्टर ए. पी. जे. अब्दुल कलाम ने कहा है कि स्कूलों में आकलन प्रक्रिया में बदलाव की जरूरत है। डाक्टर कलाम दुबई में इंडिया हाई स्कूल में आयोजित खाड़ी देशों, सिंगापुर और जापान के भारतीय स्कूलों के शिक्षकों के लिए अंतर्राष्ट्रीय कार्यशाला का उद्घाटन कर रहे थे। उन्होंने कहा कि रोजगार के अवसरों और देश में उपलब्ध रोजगार के योग्य कौशल के बीच बड़ी खाईं है जिसे पाटने की जरूरत है।

केन्द्रीय ग्रामीण विकास मंत्री विलास राव देशमुख ने कहा है कि केन्द्र, महात्मा गांधी तंतमुक्ति ग्राम विकास योजना और संत गदगेबाबा ग्राम स्वच्छता योजना को राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर लागू करने के लिए कदम उठाएगा। मुंबई में आज एक विशेष पुरस्कार समारोह में श्री देशमुख ने यह घोषणा की । इस अवसर पर महाराष्ट्र के मुख्यमंत्री पृथ्वी राज चव्हाण ने राज्य के मराठावाड़ क्षेत्र के कई सफल व्यक्तियों को विशेष पुरस्कार भी प्रदान किए।
भारत ने चेतावनी देते हुए कहा है कि तेल की कीमतों में हो रही बेतहाशा वृद्धि से विश्व अर्थव्यवस्था की रिकवरी में बाधा आ सकती है। वाशिंगटन में अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय मुद्राकोष की बैठक को सम्बोधित करते हुए, रिजर्व बैंक के गवर्नर डी सुब्बाराव ने कहा कि जब तक तेल की कीमतों में संतुलन नहीं आता, तब तक खासतौर से उभरते और विकासशील देशों के लिए मुद्रास्फीति के दबावों को झेलना होगा और विश्व अर्थव्यवस्था की रतार भी धीमी पड़ सकती है।
सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता अन्ना हजारे ने कहा है कि संसद सर्वोच्च है और अगर वह लोकपाल विधेयक को खारिज कर देती है, तो वे उसका फैसला मंजूर करेंगे। आज नई दिल्ली में श्री हजारे ने कहा कि अगर उन्हें लगता है कि सरकार सही रास्ते पर है तो वे लोकपाल विधेयक को पारित करने के लिए रखी गई 15 अगस्त की समय सीमा को बढ़ाने पर भी विचार कर सकते हैं।
सरकार द्वारा संयुक्त मसौदा समिति की अधिसूचना जारी करने के बाद श्री हजारे ने 09 अप्रैल को अपना अनशन तोड़ा था और उन्होंने इस विधेयक को पास करने के लिए 15 अगस्त की समय सीमा तय की थी और कहा था कि अगर तब तक विधेयक पास नहीं होता, तो वे फिर से अनशन पर चले जाएंगे।

हिमाचल प्रदेश में पहाड़ियों पर भारी वर्षा और हिमपात हुआ है। लाहौल स्पीति के मुख्यालय कीलोंग में पिछले 24 घन्टों में पांच सेंटीमीटर बर्फ पड़ी है और किन्नौर, कुल्लू और चम्बा की पहाड़ियों में हल्की बर्फ पड़ी है। हरियाणा में भी कहीं कहीं हल्की वर्षा होने की खबर है।
इधर, राजधानी दिल्ली के कई क्षेत्रों में वर्षा हुई, जिससे हवा में ठंडक आई है और तापमान गिरा है।
अरूणाचल प्रदेश की अंशु जमसेनपा के नेतृत्व में नौ महिला पर्वतारोहियों की अंतरराष्ट्रीय टीम माउंट एवरेस्ट के आधार शिविर पहुंच गई। पांच देशों की ये महिला पर्वतारोही नेपाल के अंतिम गांव लुकला से नौ दिन की मुश्किल चढ़ाई के बाद आधार शिविर पहुंची हैं। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया कि इनमें चार भारत से, दो इटली से और एक-एक कनाडा, ईरान और स्वीडन से हैं।

जयपुर के पूर्व महाराजा ब्रिगेडियर भवानी सिंह का लम्बी बीमारी के बाद बीती रात हरियाणा में गुडगांव के एक निजी अस्पताल में निधन हो गया। वे 80 वर्ष के थे। राजस्थान के राज्यपाल शिवराज पाटिल और मुख्यमंत्री अशोक गहलोत ने श्री भवानी सिंह के निधन पर शोक व्यक्त किया है। राज्य सरकार ने उनके सम्मान में दो दिन के राजकीय शोक की घोषणा की है। इस दौरान सरकारी इमारतों में राष्ट्रीय ध्वज झुके रहेंगे। श्री भवानी सिंह के पार्थिव शरीर का अंतिम संस्कार कल जयपुर में किया जाएगा।

In West Bengal, stage is set for tomorrow's first phase of Assembly election in the state. The first phase of Assembly election will take place in 54 seats covering six North Bengal districts of Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, North Dinjapur, South Dinajpur and Malda. Strong security measures have been taken to ensure free and fair voting. Our Kolkata correspondent reports that over 97 lak 46 thousand voters will decided the fate of 364 candiates.
Around 525 company central forces have been deployed at different parts of North Bengal to ensure free and fair voting. Central force conducted area domination activities at sensitive areas to bring confidence among voters. Out of 12 thousands 131 polling booths around 1 thousands 800 have been identified as critical. Inter-State and Inter-National boarders along with North Bengal have been sealed to prevent entry of unwanted persons. Political fate of ten Ministers of present cabinet will be decided tomorrow. In Jammu and Kashmir amid heavy downpour, over eighty two per cent polling was recorded in the second phase of Panchayat elections today. Polling was held in five blocks of the Valley. One block each in Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Kupwara and Budgam districts . 275 Sarpanchs and 2031 panchs participated in the elections . The actual direct and indirect tax collection has reached to 7 lakh 92 thousand crore rupees during the fiscal 2010-11 exceeding even the revised estimate. The collection is 12 thousand crore rupees more than the revised estimates of 7 lakh 80 thousand crore rupees .Of the total, the direct tax collection stood at 4.50 lakh crore while the indirect tax collection was 3.42 lakh crore rupees. The official said higher tax collection will help the government to fund development projects, besides reducing the fiscal deficit.
The Centre will convene a meeting of state governments at the end of this month to review the action taken to check the illegal mining problem. Our correspondent quoting sources reports, mines Secretary S Vijay Kumar, will chair the meeting of Central Coordination-cum-Empowered Committee. The meeting would also review the position regarding the constitution of high-level state committees and co-ordination with the railways, ports and customs departments to crack down on illegal mining. Besides, the Mines Ministry would also review the cases related to granting mineral concessions to minimise delays in awarding the licences.
India has warned that surging oil prices could jeopardise recovery of the global economy. Addressing the Spring Meeting of the IMF in Washington RBI Governor Duvvuri Subbarao said apart from the inflationary pressures confronting particularly the emerging and developing countries, there is the danger of a slowdown in the global economy unless oil prices moderate from current levels. Mr Subbarao added a variety of risks, including political and social turmoil in parts of the world combined with natural disasters, have made the global recovery vulnerable.
Gulf foreign ministers are meeting in the Saudi capital Riyadh to discuss the crisis in Yemen, after proposing an exit plan for Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. According to official Saudi press Agency, the ministers from the six member-states would hold talks mainly regarding their agreement in past meetings to hold contacts with the government and opposition in Yemen.

In Pakistan ,at least 10 people have been killed in an incident of political violence in Karachi. Police and rescue officials said that the victims included a former union vice Nazim belonging to the Jamaat-e-Islaami party.Interior minister, Rehman Malik said that law enforcement agencies had been given orders to shoot at sight ,extortionists and target killers, in the restive port city . Target killings in the city claimed around 557 victims in 2010 .
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Afghan President Hamid Karzai have agreed to intensify both countries' campaign against the Taliban. The two leaders met in the Afghan capital Kabul, where Mr Gilani was accompanied by military and intelligence chiefs. The Pakistani leader and Mr Karzai agreed to upgrade a joint peace commission to coordinate the fight against Taliban-led insurgents, in an agreement Mr Gilani described as "historical". The announcement came just hours after a Taliban suicide attack on a military base near the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad killed up to 10 Afghan and coalition soldiers. It was the latest in a series of attacks on police and army targets in the past week. Pakistan, which backed the Taliban government that ruled Afghanistan during the 1990s, will be crucial to any attempts to stabilize its western neighbour, although the two countries have had an uneasy relationship. Islamabad's intelligence services are still believed to have close links with many of the insurgent groups they funded and supported during and after the war against the Soviet Union, including the Taliban leadership based in Quetta. Afghan government officials have frequently accused Pakistan's military and its spy agency of trying to derail peace negotiations with Taliban leaders.
Unseasonal downpour lashed some parts of northern India and brought down the temperature in the region. There has been widespread rain and snowfall in the high reaches of Himachal Pradesh. Keylong, headquater of Lahaul Spiti experienced 5 cm snowfall during the last 24 hrs and high reaches of Kinnaur, Kullu and Chamba also had light spell of snow. Rain also lashed several parts of the National capital Delhi , brining a chill in the air and pulling the mercury down. In the United States, death toll continues to rise from a storm system that for three days has produced tornadoes and heavy rain across several central and southern states. More than 30 people have been killed in the worst pattern of storms to hit the country in more than two decades. Buildings were destroyed in seven states. Trees and power lines were downed. In the worst hit state, North Carolina, more than 60 tornadoes were reported. A state of emergency was declared there and also in Alabama.
The company operating the stricken Japanese nuclear power station says it could take until the end of this year to contain the crisis at the plant. The firm TEPCO says it aims to reduce the escape of radiation from the Fukushima site over the next three months. जम्मू कश्मीर में पंचायत चुनाव के दूसरे चरण में आज बड़ी संख्या में मतदाताओं ने वोट डाले। इस चरण में राज्य के आठ ब्लाकों में दो सौ पचहत्तर सरपंचों और दो हजार 31 पंचों को चुनने के लिए वोट डाले गए। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है, इस चरण में बयासी प्रतिशत से अधिक मतदान हुआ।

वित्त वर्ष 2010-11 में प्रत्यक्ष कर और अप्रत्यक्ष कर की वसूली संशोधित अनुमानों से कहीं अधिक हुई है। ठोस आर्थिक विकास के चलते 7 सात लाख 92 हजार करोड़ रुपये प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष कर के रूप में मिले हैं। ये पिछले वर्ष के संशोधित अनुमान सात लाख 80 हजार करोड रूपये से भी 12 हजार करोड़ रुपये से भी अधिक है। वित्त मंत्रालय के अनुसार प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष कर की वसूली सात लाख 45 हजार करोड रुपये होने का अनुमान था। इनमें से प्रत्यक्ष कर वसूली चार लाख 50 हजार करोड़ और अप्रत्यक्ष कर वसूली 3 लाख 42 हजार करोड़ रुपये रही। अधिकारियों का कहना है कि अधिक कर मिलने से यह पैसा न केवल विकास परियोजनाओं पर खर्च हो सकेगा बल्कि इससे वित्तीय घाटा भी कम होगा।
पूर्वी लीबिया से मिली रिपोर्टों में कहा गया है कि कर्नल गद्दाफी की वफादार सेना विद्रोहियों के कब्जे वाले अजदाबिया शहर पर गोलीबारी कर रही है और शहर के पश्चिमी प्रवेश द्वार के नजदीक दर्जनों रॉकेट छोडे गए। इस हमले के कारण रिहायशी इलाकों से सैकड़ों लोगों और विद्रोहियों को वहां से भागने के लिए मजबूर होना पड़ा। अभी यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि हमले में कितने लोग मारे गए हैं। कर्नल गद्दाफी की सेना ने पश्चिमी शहर मिसराता पर भी हमले तेज कर दिए हैं जिनमें छह लोग मारे गए हैं और सैंतालिस अन्य घायल हो गए हैं।
गद्दाफी की वफादार सेना ने लगातार चौथे दिन मिसराता पर गोलीबारी की। लड़ाई के कारण शहर में खाद्यान्न का गंभीर संकट पैदा हो गया है। समझा जाता है कि पिछले कई सप्ताहों से शहर में हो रही गोलीबारी और बमबारी में सैकड़ो लोग मारे गए हैं।

भारत ने चेतावनी देते हुए कहा है कि तेल की कीमतों में हो रही बेतहाशा वृद्धि से विश्व अर्थव्यवस्था की रिकवरी में बाधा आ सकती है। वाशिंगटन में अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय मुद्राकोष की बैठक को सम्बोधित करते हुए, रिजर्व बैंक के गवर्नर डी सुब्बाराव ने कहा कि जब तक तेल की कीमतों में संतुलन नहीं आता, तब तक खासतौर से उभरते और विकासशील देशों के लिए मुद्रास्फीति के दबावों को झेलना होगा और विश्व अर्थव्यवस्था की रतार भी धीमी पड़ सकती है।

हिमाचल प्रदेश में पहाड़ियों पर भारी वर्षा और हिमपात हुआ है। लाहौल स्पीति के मुख्यालय कीलोंग में पिछले 24 घन्टों में पांच सेंटीमीटर बर्फ पड़ी है और किन्नौर, कुल्लू और चम्बा की पहाड़ियों में हल्की बर्फ पड़ी है। हरियाणा में भी कहीं कहीं हल्की वर्षा होने की खबर है।
इधर, राजधानी दिल्ली के कई क्षेत्रों में वर्षा हुई, जिससे हवा में ठंडक आई है और तापमान गिरा है।
अरूणाचल प्रदेश की अंशु जमसेनपा के नेतृत्व में नौ महिला पर्वतारोहियों की अंतरराष्ट्रीय टीम माउंट एवरेस्ट के आधार शिविर पहुंच गई। पांच देशों की ये महिला पर्वतारोही नेपाल के अंतिम गांव लुकला से नौ दिन की मुश्किल चढ़ाई के बाद आधार शिविर पहुंची हैं। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया कि इनमें चार भारत से, दो इटली से और एक-एक कनाडा, ईरान और स्वीडन से हैं।

जयपुर के पूर्व महाराजा ब्रिगेडियर भवानी सिंह का लम्बी बीमारी के बाद बीती रात हरियाणा में गुडगांव के एक निजी अस्पताल में निधन हो गया। वे 80 वर्ष के थे। राजस्थान के राज्यपाल शिवराज पाटिल और मुख्यमंत्री अशोक गहलोत ने श्री भवानी सिंह के निधन पर शोक व्यक्त किया है। राज्य सरकार ने उनके सम्मान में दो दिन के राजकीय शोक की घोषणा की है। इस दौरान सरकारी इमारतों में राष्ट्रीय ध्वज झुके रहेंगे। श्री भवानी सिंह के पार्थिव शरीर का अंतिम संस्कार कल जयपुर में किया जाएगा।

In West Bengal, stage is set for tomorrow's first phase of Assembly election in the state. The first phase of Assembly election will take place in 54 seats covering six North Bengal districts of Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, North Dinjapur, South Dinajpur and Malda. Strong security measures have been taken to ensure free and fair voting. Our Kolkata correspondent reports that over 97 lak 46 thousand voters will decided the fate of 364 candiates.
Around 525 company central forces have been deployed at different parts of North Bengal to ensure free and fair voting. Central force conducted area domination activities at sensitive areas to bring confidence among voters. Out of 12 thousands 131 polling booths around 1 thousands 800 have been identified as critical. In Jammu and Kashmir amid heavy downpour, over eighty two per cent polling was recorded in the second phase of Panchayat elections today. Polling was held in five blocks of the Valley. One block each in Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Kupwara and Budgam districts . 275 Sarpanchs and 2031 panchs participated in the elections . The actual direct and indirect tax collection has reached to 7 lakh 92 thousand crore rupees during the fiscal 2010-11 exceeding even the revised estimate. The collection is 12 thousand crore rupees more than the revised estimates of 7 lakh 80 thousand crore rupees .Of the total, the direct tax collection stood at 4.50 lakh crore while the indirect tax collection was 3.42 lakh crore rupees. The official said higher tax collection will help the government to fund development projects, besides reducing the fiscal deficit.
The Centre will convene a meeting of state governments at the end of this month to review the action taken to check the illegal mining problem. Our correspondent quoting sources reports, mines Secretary S Vijay Kumar, will chair the meeting of Central Coordination-cum-Empowered Committee. The meeting would also review the position regarding the constitution of high-level state committees and co-ordination with the railways, ports and customs departments to crack down on illegal mining. Besides, the Mines Ministry would also review the cases related to granting mineral concessions to minimise delays in awarding the licences.
India has warned that surging oil prices could jeopardise recovery of the global economy. Addressing the Spring Meeting of the IMF in Washington RBI Governor Duvvuri Subbarao said apart from the inflationary pressures confronting particularly the emerging and developing countries, there is the danger of a slowdown in the global economy unless oil prices moderate from current levels. Mr Subbarao added a variety of risks, including political and social turmoil in parts of the world combined with natural disasters, have made the global recovery vulnerable.
Gulf foreign ministers are meeting in the Saudi capital Riyadh to discuss the crisis in Yemen, after proposing an exit plan for Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. According to official Saudi press Agency, the ministers from the six member-states would hold talks mainly regarding their agreement in past meetings to hold contacts with the government and opposition in Yemen.

In Pakistan ,at least 10 people have been killed in an incident of political violence in Karachi. Police and rescue officials said that the victims included a former union vice Nazim belonging to the Jamaat-e-Islaami party.Interior minister, Rehman Malik said that law enforcement agencies had been given orders to shoot at sight ,extortionists and target killers, in the restive port city . Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Afghan President Hamid Karzai have agreed to intensify both countries' campaign against the Taliban. The two leaders met in the Afghan capital Kabul, where Mr Gilani was accompanied by military and intelligence chiefs. The Pakistani leader and Mr Karzai agreed to upgrade a joint peace commission to coordinate the fight against Taliban-led insurgents, in an agreement Mr Gilani described as "historical". The announcement came just hours after a Taliban suicide attack on a military base near the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad killed up to 10 Afghan and coalition soldiers. It was the latest in a series of attacks on police and army targets in the past week. Pakistan, which backed the Taliban government that ruled Afghanistan during the 1990s, will be crucial to any attempts to stabilize its western neighbour, although the two countries have had an uneasy relationship. Islamabad's intelligence services are still believed to have close links with many of the insurgent groups they funded and supported during and after the war against the Soviet Union, including the Taliban leadership based in Quetta. Afghan government officials have frequently accused Pakistan's military and its spy agency of trying to derail peace negotiations with Taliban leaders.

In Jammu and Kashmir , traffic was resumed on 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway today after remaining suspended for several hours due to landslides, triggered by heavy rain .In Uttarakhand, mercury has dipped about two degree following the rain at various places today. Meanwhile met department predicts rain and thunder showers at many places and snowfall in higher reaches in next twenty four hours in the state.
Light to moderate rain accompanied with hail and storm have affected the normal life in the state. As per reports, about fifteen to twenty millimetre rain recorded at several places including Dehradun and Nainital. Where as snowfall reported in higher reaches of Chamoli and Pithoragarh. According to experts hail and storm winds might damage the wheat crop at some areas. Meanwhile Director Met Department, Anand Sharma has advised the farmers to keep their harvest at safe places. There has been widespread rain and snowfall in the high reaches of Himachal Pradesh. Keylong, headquater of Lahaul Spiti experienced 5 cm snowfall during the last 24 hrs and high reaches of Kinnaur, Kullu and Chamba also had light spell of snow. Rain also lashed several parts of the National capital Delhi , brining a chill in the air and pulling the mercury down. Most areas experienced rainfall in the afternoon while some parts of the city received light showers last night as well as this morning.The rain created problems for commuters as vehicular traffic was affected in many parts of the city.
In the United States, death toll continues to rise from a storm system that for three days has produced tornadoes and heavy rain across several central and southern states. More than 30 people have been killed in the worst pattern of storms to hit the country in more than two decades. Buildings were destroyed in seven states. Trees and power lines were downed. In the worst hit state, North Carolina, more than 60 tornadoes were reported. A state of emergency was declared there and also in Alabama.
The company operating the stricken Japanese nuclear power station says it could take until the end of this year to contain the crisis at the plant. The firm TEPCO says it aims to reduce the escape of radiation from the Fukushima site over the next three months. At a news conference in Tokyo, TEPCO's chairman said over the next three months the company hopes to steadily reduce the amount of radiation being released. He said the aim was to bring the reactors to a cold shot down within six to nine months.

Anna Hazare today said he was open to extending the August 15 deadline he had set for passage of the Lokpal Bill by Parliament if he found that the government was on the right path.Speaking to journalists in New Delhi,Hazare said he was open to have wider consultations on the Lokpal Bill and was also willing to involve the political leadership of the country.
The hero of 1971 war and a member of ex royal family of Jaipur Brigadier Bhawani Singh died in a Gurgaon hospital in the wee hours today. Brigadier Singh was honoured with Paramvir Chakra after 1971 war. The Air India will link Gwalior with Mumbai by starting its dialy flight between the two cities tomorrow. A statement released in New Delhi today by the national carrier said that a daily flight will be operated on the Delhi Gwalior-Mumbai route .
