In West Bengal, over 85 per cent voting was recorded for second phase of assembly elections in the state. The second phase of poll took place in 50 seats covering Murshidabad, Nadia and Beerbhoom districts yesterday. According to the state Election Department sources the voters turn out in Murshidabad and Nadia districts stood at 86 per cent while it was recorded in Beerbhoom over 85 per cent. Briefing reporters in Delhi, Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi said the polling was by and large peaceful.
AIR correspondent reports that campaigning for third phase of election has reached to its peak. The election in this phase will take place in 75 seats covering Kolkata, North and South 24 Pargana districts on Wednesday.

In Yemen, the ruling General People's Congress(GPC) has accepted a Gulf plan under which President Ali Abdullah Saleh will quit. AIR correspondent reports that the Party's deputy secretary general and head of its parliamentary bloc Soltan al-Barakani told agencies that the GPC and its allies have accepted the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) initiative in its entirety.
After continuous protests demanding the end of his nearly 33-year rule, Yemen’s president has agreed to submit his resignation to parliament within 30 days, under the GCC initiative. According to plan, President will transfer powers to his vice president, a national unity government will be formed and a presidential vote will be held within two months. The gulf initiative will also grant him and his family, immunity from prosecution. NATO says the drone strike targeted a multiple rocket launcher which had been used against civilians in Misrata. Union Commerce and Industries Minister Anand Sharma who is in Dhaka on a two day visit on Saturday will call on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today morning. The Minister of State for External Affairs, Preneet Kaur has said that there is a need for global cooperation to tackle the menace of pirates as the sea route trade was vital for all countries. Talking to reporters in Chandigarh, she said the Somali pirates had extended their reach several miles offshore. About Indian sailors in the captivity of Somali pirates, she said that the government is seized of the matter and will take appropriate action in this regard. AIR correspondent reports, piracy syndicates operating in largely ungoverned Somalia, solicit investors who buy shares in the attack missions and gain a corresponding share of ransoms paid by the shipping industry.
According to a maritime business report, the average ransom payment rose 36-fold over five years to 5.4 million dollars last year, compared with 1,50,000 dollars in 2005. The payments are fueling increased raids, adding at least 2.4 billion dollars to transport costs because vessels are being diverted onto longer routes to avoid attacks off east Africa. A group of 60 nations is working to combat the threat, which has been made worse by complex national and international laws and norms that restrict effective prosecution. Former Supreme Court judge Justice Kuldeep Singh stressed the need for appointment of the Chief Justice of India through a transparent selection process. Delivering the keynote address at the Dr Kailas Nath Katju Memorial Lecture 2011 in New Delhi, Justice Kuldeep Singh called for enforcing strict transparency and accountability in the appointment and elevation of judges and functioning of the collegiums system to eradicate corruption in the judiciary.
