अरूणाचलप्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री दोरजी खांडू और चार अन्य को ले जा रहे लापता हेलीकॉप्टर की खोज में खराब मौसम के कारण बाधाएं आ रही हैं। भूटान में भारत के राजदूत पवन वर्मा ने बताया है कि भूटान के अधिकारी भूटान की सीमा में तलाशी अभियान में पूरी मदद कर रहे हैं। भूटान ने सात जिलों में तलाशी अभियान शुरू कर दिया है। रक्षा सूत्रों ने बताया कि वायुसेना के विमानों ने दो बार उड़ानें भरी लेकिन अभी तक लापता हेलीकाप्टर के बारे में कोई सुराग नहीं मिल सका। तीसरी उड़ान अब से थोड़ी ही देर के बाद भरी जायेगी। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि भारत तिब्बत सीमा पुलिस की सभी टीमें भारत-भूटान सीमा पर तलाशी अभियान में लगा दीं गईं हैं।

संभवतः इस तरह की घटना में आज तक के सबसे बड़े खोजी अभियान में भारतीय और भूटान सीमा क्षेत्र में हजारों सुरक्षाकर्मी खराब मौसम की परवाह न करते हुए जुटे हुए हैं। घने धुंध और दुर्गम पर्वतीय इलाका होने के कारण २४ घंटे के बाद भी कोई सुराग मिल पाना संभव नहीं हो पाया है। हजारों स्थानीय ग्रामीण भी इस खोजी अभियान में शामिल हो चुके है। वायुसेना विमानों के राडार और आईएसआरओ के उपग्रह भी अब तक कोई ऐसी तस्वीर या संकेत नहीं दे पाया है जिससे गुम हुए हेलीकॉप्टर का पता चल सके। आकाशवाणी समाचार के लिए मैं मणिकांत ठाकुर।

भूटान के गृह मंत्री ल्योनपो मिन्जूर दोरजी ने कहा है कि लापता हेलीकॉप्टर की खोज के लिए दल दूर दराज के इलाकों में भेजे गए हैं। श्री दोरजी खोज अभियान का समन्वय भी कर रहे हैं।

पवन हंस का यह हेलीकॉप्टर कल तवांग से सुबह नौ बजकर ५६ मिनट पर उड़ान भरने के बीस मिनट बाद ही लापता हो गया । इसमें मुख्यमंत्री के अलावा चालक दल के दो सदस्य जे एस बब्ब्बर और टी एस मामिक, मुख्यमंत्री के सुरक्षा अधिकारी येशी चोडक और तवांग विधायक की बहन येशी लहामू सवार हैं। हेलीकॉप्टर को सुबह साढे ११ बजे ईटानगर पहुंचना था। हेलीकाप्टर का गुवाहाटी के नियंत्रण कक्ष से अन्तिम बार सेलापास इलाके के निकट रेडियो सम्पर्क हुआ था।
इस बीच, राज्य सरकार ने राज्य के मुख्य सचिव तबाम बाम की निगरानी में एक सैल का गठन किया है जो लापता हेलीकॉप्टर की खोज कार्य में प्रगति पर नजर रखेगा।

लोकसभा अध्यक्ष मीराकुमार ने भाजपा नेता मुरली मनोहर जोशी को लोक लेखा समिति का फिर अध्यक्ष नियुक्त किया है। लोकसभा सचिवालय के एक प्रवक्ता ने आज इसकी पुष्टि की। श्री जोशी द्वारा टू-जी स्पेक्ट्रम मामले में विवादास्पद रिपोर्ट लोकसभा अध्यक्ष को सौंपने के एक दिन बाद यह फैसला लिया गया।
बृहस्पतिवार को २१ सदस्यीय लोक लेखा समिति की बैठक में शोर-शराबे के बाद अधिकांश सदस्यों ने रिपोर्ट का मसौदा नामंजूर कर दिया था।
श्री जोशी ने दावा किया है कि उन्होंने बैठक स्थगित कर दी थी लेकिन कांग्रेस सदस्यों का कहना है कि श्री ंजोशी के बैठक से बाहर जाने के बाद उन्होंने राज्यसभा सदस्य सैफुद्दीन सोज+ को बैठक का अध्यक्ष चुना और रिपोर्ट रद्द कर दी गई। कांग्रेस, डीएमके पार्टी के ११ सदस्यों और समाजवादी पार्टी और बसपा के एक-एक सदस्य ने रिपोर्ट के खिलाफ वोट दिया।

केन्द्रीय सतर्कता आयोग दिल्ली सरकार के लोक निर्माण विभाग द्वारा पूरी की गई छह राष्ट्रमंडल खेल परियोजनाओं में कथित वित्तीय और प्रबंधकीय खामियों ें की जांच कर रहा है। केन्द्रीय सतर्कता आयोग की मुख्य तकनीकी जांच शाखा द्वारा राष्ट्रमंडल खेल परियोजनाओं में कमियों की हाल की रिपोर्ट में प्रयुक्त सामग्री के निम्न स्तर, ऊंची दर, और गुणवत्ता नियंत्रण में ढिलाई का आरोप है। ये परियोजनाएं करीब एक हजार ३१५ करोड़ रुपये की हैं। जांच शाखा ने लोक निर्माण विभाग पर पूर्वी दिल्ली स्थित राजा राम कोहली मार्ग और शास्त्री नगर मोड़ पर ग्रेड सेपरेटर के निर्माण कार्य में देरी करने का आरोप भी लगाया है।

पायलटों की लगातार पांचवे दिन जारी हड़ताल के कारण एयर इंडिया की १६५ नियमित उड़ानों में से सिर्फ ४० उड़ाने ही इस समय संचालित हो रही हैं। एयरलाइन के प्रवक्ता ने बताया कि एयर इंडिया की सहयोगी कंपनी एयर इंडिया एक्सप्रेस के बोइंग ७३७ विमान को कुछ क्षेत्रों में इस्तेमाल किया जाएगा। उन्होंने बताया कि राजधानी दिल्ली से निर्धारित ५२ उड़ानों की जगह १४ उड़ाने जारी रहेंगी जिनमें एक काठमांडू और एक दुबई के लिए होगी।

पायलटों की हड़ताल से परेशान एयर इंडिया के भारतीयों के लिए भारतीय रेल ने विशेष रेलगाड़ियां चलाई है। कल सालदा से नई दिल्ली के बीच एक स्पेशल रेलगाड़ी चलाई गई। पायलटों की हड़ताल से यही सेक्टर सबसे ज्यादा प्रभावित हुआ है। रेल विभाग, कोलकाता दिल्ली, दिल्ली-मुंबई, दिल्ली-हैदराबाद, मुंबई-हैदराबाद, मुंबई-बीकानेर ओर चेन्न्ई-बैंगलूरू के बीच ३० रेलगाड़ियां चला रहा हैं। यात्रियों को उनके गनतव्य तक पहुंचाने के लिए एयरइंडिया ने प्राइवेट एयरलाइंस के सहयोग से उड़ाने भी शुरू की है। लेकिन फिर यह सच है कि पायलटों की हड़ताल से हवाई यात्रा किरायों में तेजी से बढ़ोतरी हुई है और कई यात्रियों को राते एयरपोर्ट पर ही बितानी पड़ रही है। यात्री तय गन्तव्य पर समय पर नहीं पहुंच पा रहे। वियज रैना के साथ कुलश्रेष्ठ कमल, आकाशवाणी समाचार, दिल्ली।
इस बीच, एयर इंडिया प्रबंधन और हड़ताली पायलट अपने-अपने रूख पर अड़े हुए हैं। हड़ताली पायलटों का कहना है कि उन्हें एयर इंडिया प्रबंधन की ओर से बातचीत का कोई औपचारिक बुलावा नहीं आया है। दूसरी ओर एयर इंडिया प्रबंधन इस मामले में दिल्ली उच्च न्यायालय की अवमानना की कार्रवाई के फैसले का इंतजार कर रहा है।

सीबीएसई ने आज अखिल भारतीय इंजीनियरिंग प्रवेश परीक्षा-ए आई ट्रिपल ई के प्रश्न पत्र उत्तर प्रदेश में लीक हो जाने के कारण कुछ घंटों के लिए परीक्षा टाल दी। सीबीएसई के निदेशक विनीत जोशी ने बताया कि आज सवेरे साढ़े नौ बजे से शुरू होने वाली पहले पेपर की परीक्षा दोपहर १२ बजे शुरू की ेगई।

कुछ बच्चे एएफएमसी की परीक्षा में भी बैठने वाले हो, जो कि ढ़ाई बजे से होनी थी। तो वैसे बच्चे अगर उनको एएफएमसी की परीक्षा में बैठना है तो बैठ सकते हैं। उन बच्चों के लिए हम लोग आठ तारीख को दूसरी परीक्षा करांएगें, एआई ट्रिपल ई की, जो कि उन्हीं सेंटरों में सेम एडमिट कार्ड के साथ जाकर बैठ सकते हैं। कुछ सेंटर ऐसे है, जो कि आज एएफएमसी के सेंटर बने हुए है। एक्रॉस द कंट्री कुछ सेंटर हैं जो कि एएफएमसी के, तो उन सेंटर से हम लोगों ने बात करी, सेंटर सुपरिटेंडेंट से। उनको यह बोला हुआ है कि अगर वो लोग दोनों एगजेम को अकोमिडेट कर सकते है, तो दोनों को अकोमिडेट करे, अगर वो नहीं कर सकते हैं, तो वैसे बच्चे भी जो उन सेंटरों पर जा रहें, जहां पर एएफएमसी की परीक्षा होनी और जहां के सेंटर सुपरिटेंडेंट उन बच्चों को नहीं अकोमिडेट कर पाएंगे वो सेंटर सुपरिनटेंडेंट यह बता दे रहे है कि वैसे बच्चों की परीक्षा आज न होकर के आठ तारीख को हो।
उधर, उत्तर प्रदेश के विशेष पुलिस महानिदेशक बृजलाल ने कहा कि शीघ्र ही अपराधियों को पकड़ लिया जाएगा।

मुखबिर से मिली जानकारी के आधार पर अभियुक्तों की तलाश की जा रही है। यह पर्चा हम लोग ने लखनऊ में रिकॉर्ड किया है। दिगत वर्षों में एसटीए द्वारा प्रश्न पत्र लीक किये जाने की घटना में जिन लोगों को पकड़ा गया था उनको भी खंगाला जा रहा है। अभी इसमें यह जानकारी हुई है कि इसमें जो कुछ लोग है, उसमें कुछ उत्तर प्रदेश में, कानपुर तथा कुछ बिहार के लोग है और हम शीघ्र ही इनको गिरफ्तार कर लेंगे।
देशभर में लगभग १२ लाख विद्यार्थी आज ८० शहरों के १६ सौ से अधिक केन्द्रों पर इस प्रतिष्ठित परीक्षा में शामिल हो रहे हैं। देश के राष्ट्रीय तकनीकी संस्थानों और अन्य इंजीनियरिंग कॉलेजों में प्रवेश के लिए यह परीक्षा ली जाती है।

पश्चिम बंगाल में विधानसभा चुनाव के चौथे चरण के लिए आज शाम प्रचार समाप्त हो जाएगा। हावड़ा, हुगली, पूर्वी मेदिनीपुर और बर्दवान जिले के कुछ भागों में विधानसभा की ६३ सीटों के लिए मंगलवार को वोट डाले जाएंगे।

आन्ध्रप्रदेश में मजलिसे इतेहादुल मुस्लमीन - एम आई एम के विधायक अकबरूदीन ओवैसी की हालत गंभीर बनी हुई है। कल गोलीबारी की घटना में वे गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गए थे। उनका इलाज कर रहे डाक्टरों ने आज सुबह पत्रकारों को बताया कि श्री ओवैसी के एक गुर्दे को नुकसान पहुंचा है। डाक्टरों ने बताया कि उन्हें डायलिसिस पर रखा गया और साथ ही साथ वेंटीलेटर की भी मदद ली जा रही है। राज्य की गृहमंत्री सविता इन्द्र रेड्डी ने पत्रकारों को बताया कि घटना की जांच हैदराबाद के सेन्ट्रल क्राइम स्टेशन को सौंप दी गई है। इस बीच एम आई एम द्वारा आयोजित बंद हैदराबाद और नालगोंडा जिले में शांतिपूर्ण है। सुरक्षा के कड़े इंतजाम किये गए हैं।

सरकार ने महात्मा गांधी राष्ट्रीय ग्रामीण रोजगार गारंटी योजना-मनरेगा के मजदूरों को स्वास्थ्य बीमा योजना का लाभ देने का प्रस्ताव किया है। अभी तक असंगठित क्षेत्र के दो करोड़ ३४ लाख मजदूरों को स्वास्थ्य बीमा योजना का लाभ दिया जा रहा है और उन्हें स्मार्ट कार्ड भी दिए जा चुके हैं। केन्द्रीय श्रम मंत्री मल्लिकार्जुन खड़गे ने मई दिवस के अवसर पर आकाशवाणी से विशेष भेट में यह बात कही। उन्होंने जोर दिया कि विनिर्माण क्षेत्र में काम पर रखो और निकालो की नीति की अनुमति नहीं दी जाएगी। इससे उत्पादन पर बुरा असर पड़ेगा। उन्होंने कहा कि श्रमिकों और विनिर्माण उद्योगों के हितों के बीच संतुलन आवश्यक है। पूरा साक्षात्कार आकाशवाणी के राजधानी चैनल पर आज रात सवा नौ बजे से स्पॉटलाइट कार्यक्रम में सुना जा सकता है।
आज मई दिवस के अवसर पर देशभर में कई कार्यक्रम आयोजित किए जा रहे हैं। दिल्ली सरकार ने शिकायत दर्ज कराने के लिए निःशुल्क श्रमिक हेल्पलाइन शुरू की है।
मुख्यमंत्री शीला दीक्षित ने कहा कि इससे मजदूरों को आपात मेडिकल सहायता मिल सकेगी। इसके अलावा न्यूनतम मजदूरी, मुआवजा और अपने काम से संबद्ध अन्य वैधानिक बकाए की शिकायत भी दर्ज कराई जा सकेगी। इस हेल्पलाइन का नम्बर १ २ ७ ८ ९ है। इस पर सुबह सात बजे से रात ८ बजे तक शिकायत दर्ज कराई जा सकती है।

दिल्ली सरकार ने पीरागढ़ी में बृहस्प्तिवार को एक प्लास्टिक सामान की फैक्ट्री के अग्निकांड में मारे गए दस लोगों के परिजनों को दो-दो लाख रूपए अनुदान देने की घोषणा की है। मुख्यमंत्री शीला दीक्षित ने आज नई दिल्ली में एक समारोह में यह घोषणा की। उन्होंने दक्ष श्रमिकों के लिए वार्षिक पुरस्कारों का भी एलान किया।

लीबिया की राजधानी त्रिपोली में नैटो के हवाई हमले में कर्नल गद्दाफी का सबसे छोटा बेटा सैफ अल-अरब मारा गया है। सरकारी प्रवक्ता ने बताया कि कर्नल गद्दाफी भी उसी आवासीय परिसर में थे लेकिन वे बच गए। इस हमले में गद्दाफी के तीन नाती-पोते भी मारे गए। हमले में कई लोग घायल हो गए हैं। सरकारी प्रवक्ता ने बताया कि मुअम्मर गद्दाफी को जान से मारने के लिए यह सीधा हमला किया गया।

अमरीकी नेतृत्व वाली गठबंधन सेनाओं पर तालिबान के हमलों की चेतावनी के मद्देनजर संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने युद्ध में जुटे सभी गुटों से नागरिकों की सुरक्षा का आह्‌वान किया है। संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने अफगानिस्तान में आगामी महीनों में और हिंसा की आशंका जताई है। काबुल में संयुक्त राष्ट्र के प्रमुख स्टाफन डी मिस्तुरा ने कहा कि उग्रवादियों को अंधाधुंध विस्फोटक सामग्री का इस्तेमाल नहीं करना चाहिए और दूसरी ओर अफगान तथा गठबंधन सेनाओं को भी अपने हवाई हमले सुनियोजित करने चाहिए।

अफगानिस्तान में आज सुबह पकतिका प्रांत में आत्मघाती हमले में तीन लोग मारे गए और ११ अन्य घायल हो गए। गृह मंत्रालय ने बताया है कि बरमाल जिले में अश्किन बाजार में हमलावर ने विस्फोट से अपने आपको उड़ा दिया।

पाकिस्तान में कराची में आज ११ वाहनों को आग लगा दी गई। पुलिस ने बताया कि अज्ञात लोगों ने शहर के विभिन्न इलाकों में कई बसों को आग के हवाले कर दिया।

Inclement weather is hampering the massive joint search operation being carried out by the Indian and Bhutanese officials to trace the missing helicopter carrying Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and four others. Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, Pawan Verma said that Bhutanese officials are rendering all help in the rescue operation in the Bhutanese territory. Bhutan has launched search operation in seven districts of their country. Defence sources said, the IAF planes have made two sorties but no indication of the missing chopper has been received so far. The third sortie is to begin in a while. All ITBP teams along the Indo-Bhutanese border side, have been pressed in to rescue operation.

According to Eastern Air Command, two MI-17 and two Chetak helicopters have been pressed into service for aerial survey and logistical support. The aerial rescue and search operations resumed at six this morning as they were suspended due to inclement weather last evening. Thirty columns of Indian Army comprising two thousand four hundred personnel from Tawang and Tenga are busy searching for the missing helicopter on the ground. More columns are also being sent. Six ITBP teams besides Army, SSB, ITBP and the state police are participating in the joint operation on the Indian territory side. Two Central Ministers Mukul Wasnik and V Narayanswamy have reached Itanagar to oversee the operations.

The four-seater single-engine Pawan Hans helicopter went missing after 20 minutes of its take off from Tawang at 9.56 am yesterday with five on board. This include crew members Captain J S Babbar, Captain T S Mamik,Mr. Khandu’s security officer Yeshi Choddak and sister of Tawang MLA Tsewang Dhondup ,Yeshi Lhamu. The chopper was to land at Itanagar at about 11.30 am.

Meanwhile, the state government has set up a crisis management cell to monitor the situation under the overall guidance and supervision of Chief Secretary Tabam Bam. We have a report from our Correspondent:

Probably the biggest ever search operation is on, on the Indian territory side to trace the missing chopper with Arunachal Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and four others. Braving the inclement weather and treacherous terrains on both the sides of Indo-Bhutan border, thousands of security personnel have fanned out to get any indication on the ground. Unique to any search operation, thousands of villagers of the nearby areas where the chopper was last sighted have joined the rescue mission. The aerial sorties and satellite imagery are yet to provide any clue. More and more help are pouring in from all the quarters to have any information on the missing chopper. Meanwhile, Bhutanese Home Minister, Lyonpo Minjur Dorji, who is coordinating the massive operation has said, search parties have been asked to reach remote and uninhabited areas where the helicopter could have been lost. The Bhutanese government has allowed 21 persons from Arunachal Pradesh who had come across the border, through Lungla, to conduct their own search in the Roling area. <><><>

BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi has been reappointed as Chairman of Public Accounts Committee by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. A Spokesman of the Lok Sabha Secretariat confirmed this today. The appointment comes a day after Dr Joshi submitted the controversial report to Lok Sabha Speaker on the 2G issue. The draft report was rejected by the majority of members in the 21 member Committee on Thursday during a chaotic meeting. Joshi claimed that he had adjourned the meeting. But Congress members alleged that he had walked out and after that they elected Rajya Sabha member Saifuddin Soz to chair the meeting which rejected the report.

Air India has reduced its operation to 40 flights across its network against the regular 165 as the pilots' agitation continues on the 5th day today. A spokesman of the airline said that the national carrier will be utilizing Boeing 737 aircraft of its subsidiary Air India Express on some of the sectors. He said the national carrier will be operating 14 flights, including one each to Kathmandu and Dubai today out of its scheduled 52 flights from the national capital.

The stand-off between the striking pilots and the Air India management continues with both sides refusing to budge from their respective stand.

The agitating pilots say they have not received any formal invitation for talks from the Air India management. The national carrier on the other hand, is waiting for the Delhi High Court's decision on the contempt of court proceedings against the Indian Commercial Pilot Association leaders. For Air India passengers caught in the pilot strike, Indian Railways is running special trains . Yesterday, a special AC train was operated from Sealdah to New Delhi carrying stranded air passengers from one of the worst-hit sectors. In all, railways is operating 20 trains between six major destinations. Air India is has also made arrangements with private carriers to accommodate the stranded passengers. But the fact is that the agitation has resulted in sharp hike in air fares and many people who spend nights at the airports were unable to reach to their respective destinations in time. Six Commonwealth Games-related projects executed by the PWD of the Delhi government are being investigated by the Central Vigilance Commission for alleged financial and managerial lapses. According to a recent report on deficiencies in Games-related works by Chief Technical Examination wing of the CVC, it has observed higher rates, poor quality control and substandard material in the projects worth about 1,315 crore rupees. The CTE wing blamed the PWD for delay in work for construction of grade separator at Rajaram Kohli Marg intersection and Shastri Nagar intersection in East Delhi at the cost of 214 crore rupees.<><><>

CBSE has postponed the test of the All India Engineering Entrance Examination, AIEEE by a few hours after the question papers were leaked in Uttar Pradesh today. The first paper scheduled to begin at 9.30 AM was held at 12.00 PM while the second paper scheduled to begin at 2.00 PM, will now begin at 4.00 PM. Official Sources said that the decision was taken immediately after reports of question papers getting leaked were received from Uttar Pradesh. More than 12 lakh students across the country are appearing in the prestigious exam at over 1,600 centres in more than 80 cities today. The examination is conducted to gain admissions into National Institutes of Technology and other engineering colleges in the country.

The CBSE release also stated that the students who are also appearing for the Armed Forces Medical College, AFMC Examination alongwith AIEEE, can take the AFMC exam as per prior schedule. The Board will conduct another examination for such students on the 8th of May. Students will be allowed to take the examination at the same centres with the same roll numbers.

Campaigning will end today for the fourth phase of Assembly elections in West Bengal. 63 constituencies spread over Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore and parts of Burdwan districts, will go to polls in this phase on Tuesday. In Andhra Pradesh, the condition of MIM legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi, seriously injured in firing yesterday, is critical. Doctors attending on him told media this morning that one of his kidneys has got damaged. They said dialysis is underway while he has been kept on ventilator for assisted respiration. State Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy told reporters that the investigation into to the incident has been handed over to the Central Crime Station of Hyderabad. Meanwhile, amidst tight security arrangements, the bandh called by MIM is so far peaceful in Hyderabad and Nalgonda districts.

The Supreme Court will hear tomorrow the petition seeking a ban on sale and production of the pesticide Endosulfan across the country. The petition filed by CPI-M's youth wing Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) would be mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice S H Kapadia. In its petition, DYFI has sought a direction to the Centre to prohibit the sale of Endosulfan in its present form or any other derivatives in the market. It has submitted that a large section of people was directly affected because of the use of Endosulfan, already banned in 81 countries and its use not permitted in another 12 nations.

Tourists visiting Sikkim, will now be able to travel to the picturesque Chhangu Lake and the Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir near Nathula on Indo-China Border by bus too. This will be possible with introduction of bus services by the Sikkim Nationalized Transport in a couple of days. Government proposes to cover MGNREGA workers under the Health Insurance Scheme. Already, two crore 34 lakh workers in the unorganized sector have been covered under the Health Insurance Scheme and they have been provided with smart cards. This was revealed by the Union Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge in an exclusive interview to All India Radio on May Day today. He asserted that the 'hire-and fire' policy will not be allowed in the manufacturing units. This, he said, may hamper production and called for a balance to protect the interests of labour as well as manufacturing class.

The Delhi Government has launched a toll-free Shramik Helpline to handle the complaints of workers. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said, it will help workers to get assistance in medical emergency, redressal of minimum wages, workmen compensation and various other benefits which are legally due to them. The toll-free number is 12789 and it will be functional from 7.00 AM to 8.00 PM initially.

A NATO air strike in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, has killed Saif al-Arab, the son of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. A government spokesman said, Colonel Gaddafi himself was in the large residential villa which was hit by the strike, but was unharmed. Spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said, three of Mr. Gaddafi's grandchildren were also killed in the strike yesterday, at the son's home in Tripoli. He said, the bombing left several other people who were in the house, injured and called the incident a direct attempt to assassinate Mr. Gaddafi. Reports said, the building was extensively damaged in the air strike and one unexploded bomb remains at the site. NATO has confirmed the air strike, without denying or confirming the reported deaths. A NATO spokesman said, he was aware of reports that members of Col Gaddafi's family, had been killed, but made no further comment. Libyans in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi fired celebratory shots into the air and honked car horns after the news that a NATO airstrike had killed Saif al-Arab Gaddafi.

In Afghanistan, three civilians were killed and 11 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up in Paktika province this morning. In a statement, the Interior Ministry said the attack took place in Ashkin bazaar in Barmal district when the suicide bomber detonated an explosive device attached to his body. However, the statement did not provide more details, saying police has initiated an investigation and details will be released to media later. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The United Nations mission in Afghanistan has called on all warring parties in the country to protect civilians, as fighting is expected to intensify in the coming months. The U.N. chief in Afghanistan, Staffan de Mistura, said that pro-government and Taliban forces are obliged not to launch attacks on civilian locations or in areas where civilians gather. De Mistura urged insurgents to not indiscriminately use improvised explosive devices, and Afghan and coalition forces to better regulate air strikes and night raids. The U.N. statement came after the Taliban pledged to launch a spring offensive against the US led coalition and its allies today.

Maldives police used tear gas and batons to break up a protest this morning demanding President Mohamad Nasheed's resignation. Dozens of people were injured and many arrested. Thousands of protesters converged on the capital, Male last night to rally against economic hardship, alleged government mismanagement and wasteful spending.

In China, 10 people have been confirmed dead and 35 injured in a hotel fire in northeastern Jilin Province early this morning. Local officials said the fire broke out at about 3:30 at the Home Inns, the country's largest budget hotel operator, in Tonghua City. Officials said the fire was put out half an hour later and the injured were sent to a hospital for emergency treatment.

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Kazakhstan this morning, 71 km northeast of the financial capital and largest city, Almaty. The US Geological Survey said, the earthquake took place at a depth of 20 km. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the earthquake.

Cambodia says, Thai troops continued launching mortar shells into its territory throughout last night until this morning. Deputy commander of the artillery unit, Suos Sothea, said Thai troops opened fire at their troops at the 13th century Ta Krabei temple in Oddar Meanchey province last night. He said then occasionally, they continued to fire mortar shells until this morning. Sothea said Cambodian troops had fired back just using small guns in order to defend its territory from the invasion. No casualties were reported in this latest sporadic fighting. Cambodian and Thai troops have been exchanging gunfire over the disputed border areas and both sides blamed the other for the fighting.
