पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा चुनाव के आज चौथे चरण में लगभग 85 प्रतिशत वोट पड़े। पूर्वी मेदिनीपुर, हावड़ा, हुगली और बर्धमान जिले के कुछ हिस्सों की 63 सीटों के लिए मतदान हुआ। निर्वाचन उपायुक्त विनोद जुत्शी ने आज नई दिल्ली में बताया कि मतदान पूरी तरह शांतिपूर्ण रहा। विकास कार्य की अनदेखी के विरोध में स्थानीय लोगों द्वारा मतदान बहिष्कार के चार मामलो की खबर है।

मतदान पूर्णरूप से शांतिपूर्वक रहा, किसी प्रकार की कोई दुर्घटना नहीं हुई, सवा छह बजे तक जो प्राप्त समाचार है उसके अनुसार 84 दशमलव आठ प्रतिशत मतदान हुआ। जो पिछले 2006 के जो असेम्बली के चुनाव हुए थे उसमें 83 दशमल एक-नौ प्रतिशत था, उससे एक प्रतिशत से भी अधिक ज्यादा है, पूरे दिन में लगभग 68 व्यक्तियों को प्रवेन्टिव अरेस्ट किया गया।
उधर कोलकाता में अतिरिक्त मुख्य चुनाव अधिकारी एन. के. साहाना ने हमारे संवाददाता को बताया कि विभिन्न मतदान केन्द्रों पर तकनीकी गड़बड़ी के कारण एक सौ इक्हत्तर इलेक्ट्रॉनिक वोटिंग मशीनों को बदला गया। चुनाव आदर्श आचार संहिता के उल्लंघन और बीमारी के कारण दो पीठासीन और दो मतदान अधिकारियों को ड्यूटी से हटाया गया।
हमारे संवाददाता का कहना है कि ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में भारी मतदान, जहां मतदाताओं की जागरूकता दर्शाता है वहीं चुनाव आयोग की कुशल प्रबंधन की भी गवाही देता है।
इस दौर में 85 फीसदी से अधिक की रिकार्ड वोटिंग, सत्ता परिवर्तन की हूंकार है या फिर वाम दलों के पक्ष में प्रत्यावर्तन का चमत्कार ये कहना अभी जल्दबाजी होगी। ग्रामीण अंचलों में जबरदस्त मतदान न केवल मतदाताओं की जागरूकता को रेखांकिक करता है, बल्कि चुनाव आयोग के शानदार प्रबंधन पर भी मुहर लगाता है। आज की वोटिंग के नतीजों से ये भी स्पष्ट हो जायेगा कि ग्रामीण अंचलों में वाम मोर्चा बना तृणमुल कांग्रेस के बीच वर्चस्व की लड़ाई किस पाले में जा गिरी। बहरहाल अब सारा जोर नक्सलवाद से प्रभावित पुरलिया, बांकुड़ा और पश्चिम मिदनापुर जिलो में चुनाव प्रचार पर जा टिका है।

बिहार में, पंचायत चुनाव के पांचवे चरण मे ंआज 51 ब्लॉकों में आज 842 ग्राम पंचायतों के लिए कड़ी सुरक्षा के बीच वोट डाले गए। मतदान शांतिपूर्वक सम्पन्न हो गया। लगभग 63 प्रतिशत मतदान होने की खबर है। कटिहार जिले में सबसे ज्यादा 73 प्रतिशत और गया में सबसे कम 53 प्रतिशत मतदान हुआ।
छठे चरण का मतदान इस महीने की छह तारीख को होगा।

दिल्ली उच्च न्यायालय ने हड़ताल समाप्त करने के न्यायालय के आदेश का पालन नहीं करने के लिए एयर इंडिया के पायलट संघ के 9 पदाधिकारियों को अवमानना का नोटिस जारी किया है। उन्हें नोटिस का जवाब देने के लिए दो सप्ताह का समय दिया गया है। न्यायालय ने हड़ताली पायलटों और एयर इंडिया प्रबन्धन के अड़ियल रवैये के लिए दोनों को फटकार लगाई और गतिरोध समाप्त करने के लिए दोनों पक्षों की सहायता के लिए एक वकील नियुक्त किया। न्यायालय ने कल पायलटों से तुरन्त हड़ताल समाप्त करने और प्रबन्धन से उनकी मांगों पर विचार करने के लिए कहा था।
सरकार ने कहा है कि हड़ताल समाप्त करने के बाद ही पायलटों से बातचीत की जायेगी, जबकि पायलटों का कहना है कि वे हड़ताल तभी समाप्त करेंगे जब उनके संघ की मान्यता रद्द करने का फैसला वापस लिया जाये और उनके बर्खास्त पदाधिकारियों को काम पर वापस लिया जाये।
इस बीच, एयर इंडिया द्वारा इस महीने की 6 तारीख तक घरेलू उड़ानों में कटौती करने के कारण यात्रियों को काफी परेशानियों का सामना करना पड़ रहा है। हालांकि एयर इंडिया ने यात्रियों की मदद के लिए अधिक सीटों वाले विमानों की उड़ान शुरू की है।

झारखंड के लोहरदगा जिले में पुलिस के एक दल पर संदिग्ध माओवादियों के घात लगाकर किए गये हमले में 11 पुलिसकर्मी शहीद हो गए और 31 घायल हो गये। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है किा घायल सुरक्षाकर्मियों को स्थानीय स्वास्थ्य केन्द्र में ले जाया गया।
लोहारद्गा में सेना थाना क्षेत्र में गस्त से लौट रहे पुलिस बल पर घात लगाकर और लैंडमाइन्ड विस्फोट करके ताबडतौड़ गोलीबारी में 11 पुलिस के जवान शहीद हो गये और अन्य घायल हो गये हैं, वहीं बोकारों के झुमडा पहाडी के दलहटी के पास सीआरपीएफ कैम्प से महज+ दो-तीन किलोमीटर की दूरी पर हमलाकर नक्सलियों ने राज्य में सुरक्षबलों को एक चुनौती दी है। कल गुमला में एक निर्दोष नागरिक हीरा साऊ की निर्मम हत्या और रांची के पास अनगड़ा में एक पुलिस डीएसपी को मुठभेड़ में घायल करने के बाद आज हिंसा का स्तर और बड़ा हो गया।

प्रवर्तन निदेशालय ने मनि लाउंड्रिंग रोकथाम कानून के तहत डीएमके सांसद कनिमोड़ी और चार अन्य को समन जारी किया है, जिनके नाम टू जी-स्पैक्ट्रम आवंटन मामले में सी बी आई के आरोपपत्र में शामिल है। सूत्रों ने बताया कि कनिमोड़ी के अलावा डीएमके कीे कलैंगर टी वी कंपनी के प्रबंध निदेशक शरद कुमार, स्वान टेलकाम के प्रमोटर शाहिद उस्मान बलवा के भतीजे आसिफ बलवा, कुसेगांव फ्रूट्स एंड वेजिटेबल्स प्राइवेट लिमिटेड के निदेशक राजीव अग्रवाल और सिनेयुग फिल्मस प्राइवेट लिमिटेड के करीम मुरानी को समन जारी किए गए हैं। सी बी आई ने 2 जी स्पैक्ट्रम मामले में 2 अप्रैल को दाखिल अपने पहले आरोप पत्र में पूर्व दूर संचार मंत्री ए राजा और पूर्व दूरसंचार सचिव सिद्धार्थ बेहूरा और तीन दूरसंचार कंपनियों सहित आठ पर आरोप लगाया था। सीबीआई ने स्पैक्ट्रम वितरण में कथित अनियमितताओं के कारण सरकारी खजाने को 30 हजार 984 करोड़ रुपए का नुकसान होने की बात कही है।

रिजर्व बैंक ने मुद्रास्फीति पर काबू पाने के लिए अल्पावधि का उधार लेने और उधार देने की अपनी दरों में आधा-आधा प्रतिशत बढ़ा दी है। बैंक ने वार्षिक मौद्रिक नीति की घोषणा करते हुए वाणिज्यिक बैंकों को अल्पावधि के लिए ऋण देने की अपनी रिपो दर बढ़ाकर सात दशमलव दो पांच प्रतिशत कर दी है। अल्पावधि के लिए वाणिज्यिक बैंकों से ऋण लेने की रिवर्स रिपो दर बढ़ाकर छह दशमलव दो पांच प्रतिशत कर दी गई है। इससे आवास, ऑटो और अन्य ऋण महंगे होने की संभावना है। बैंक दर और नकद आरक्षी अनुपात में कोई बदलाव नहीं किया गया है। रिज+र्व बैंक ने मौजूदा वित्तवर्ष के लिए सकल घरेलू उत्पाद की वृद्धि दर आठ प्रतिशत रहने का अनुमान व्यक्त किया है, जबकि सरकार का अनुमान 9 प्रतिशत है। शीर्ष बैंक ने मार्च 2012 तक मुद्रास्फीति की दर छह प्रतिशत होने का अनुमान व्यक्त किया है। रिज+र्व बैंक के गवर्नर डी. सुब्बाराव ने कहा कि अल्पावधि में भले ही आर्थिक वृद्धि की दर कुछ प्रभावित हो, लेकिन मुद्रास्फीति की दर कम करने को प्राथमिकता देना जरूरी है।
रिज+र्व बैंक ने जमाकर्ताओं को कुछ राहत देते हुए बचत खाते की ब्याजदरों को साढ़े तीन प्रतिशत से बढ़ाकर चार प्रतिशत कर दिया है। कच्चे तेल की अंतरराष्ट्रीय कीमतों से तालमेल बैठाते हुए पेट्रोलियम उत्पादों की घरेलू कीमतों को बढ़ाने की आवश्यकता पर भी जोर दिया गया है।

आर्थिक विशेषज्ञ डी.के. जोशी का मानना है कि रेपो और रिवर्स रेपो दरों में बढ़ौत्तरी से आम निवेशकों को फायदा होगा।
तो आम आदमी के लिए इसका मतलब यह है कि अगले साल भी हम देखेंगे कि आरबीआई इंट्रस्ट रेट बढ़ाता रहेगा और जो हमारे कार लोन, होम लोन रेट्स है वो भी बढ़ेंगे इसके साथ-साथ डिपाजिट रेट भी बढ़ेंगे तो जिन लोगों का फिक्स डिपोजिट में इनवेस्टमेंट रहता है उनके लिए यह फायदेमंद रहेगा।

वित्तमंत्री प्रणब मुखर्जी ने कहा है कि मुद्रास्फीति पर काबू पाने के लिए अल्पावधि ब्याज दरों में की गई वृद्धि आवश्यक थी। उन्होंने माना कि मुद्रास्फीति की दर में मामूली गिरावट के बावजूद अभी भी मुद्रास्फीति का दबाव बहुत अधिक है।
अंतर्राष्ट्रीय बाजार में उर्जा और खाद्य पदार्थों सहित विभिन्न वस्तुओं की कीमतों में उतार-चढ़ाव को देखते हुए तथा मुद्रास्फीति को रोकने के उद्देश्य यह कदम उठाना आवश्यक समझा गया।
योजना आयोग के उपाध्यक्ष मोंटेकसिंह आहलुवालिया ने प्रमुख दरों और बचत ब्याज दरों में वृद्धि को एक अच्छा फैसला बताया।

सरकार वर्ष 2014 तक निर्यात को दोगुना कर पांच सौ अरब डॉलर तक पहुंचाने का लक्ष्य हासिल करने के लिए एशिया, अफ्रीका और लैटिन अमेरिका में नये बाजारों को तलाशेगी। वाणिज्य और उद्योग मंत्री आनन्द शर्मा ने आज नई दिल्ली में निर्यात दोगुना करने पर रणनीति पत्र जारी करते हुए श्री शर्मा ने बताया कि नई रणनीति के अन्तर्गत रत्न तथा आभूषण और कृषि उत्पादों जैसे रोजगार का अधिक सृजन करने वाले क्षेत्रों को बढ़ावा दिया जायेगा।

लगातार सातवें सत्र गिरावट दर्ज करते हुए मुम्बई शेयर बाजार का सेंसेक्स 463 अंकों के भारी नुकसान से 18,535 पर बंद हुआ। रिज+र्व बैंक द्वारा प्रमुख नीतिगत दरों में भारी बढ़त के बात निवेशकों ने ब्याज दरों से प्रभावित स्टाक्स की प्रमुख रूप से बिकवाली की। नवम्बर 2008 के बाद सेंसेक्स में गिरावट का ये सबसे लम्बा दौर है। नेशनल स्टॉक एक्सचेंज का निफ्‌टी 136 अंकों के नुकसान से 5, 565 पर बंद हुआ।

सोना दिल्ली में 120 रूपये सस्ता होकर 22720 रूपये प्रति दस ग्राम पर आ गया। कच्चे तेल की वायदा कीमत अमेरिका में एक डालर 18 सेंट गिरकर 112 डॉलर 34 सेंट प्रति बैरल हो गई और ब्रैंट क्रूड की 124 डॉलर प्रति बैरल से थोड़ी नीचे दर्ज हुई।

अमरीका ने कहा है कि विश्वास नहीं किया जा सकता कि मारे गये आतंकवादी ओसामा बिन लादेन को पाकिस्तान में समर्थन प्राप्त नहीं था। आतंकवाद विरोधी और आंतरिक सुरक्षा मामलों के उप राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा सलाहकार जॉन ब्रेन्नान ने वाशिंगटन में पत्रकारों को बताया कि यह अविश्वसनीय है कि ओसामा को उस देश में समर्थन प्राप्त नहीं था जिसने उसे इतने वर्षों तक वहां रहने दिया। उन्होंने ओसामा के साथ किसी सरकारी सम्पर्क होने की जांच कराने का संकेत दिया। कई प्रंमुख लोगों ने पाकिस्तान पर दोमुंही नीति अपनाने का आरोप लगाया है।

भारत ने कहा है कि ओसामा बिन लादेन के पाकिस्तान में मारे जाने के बाद, पाकिस्तान को कई सवालों के जवाब देने होंगे, क्योंकि वह ओसामा के पाकिस्तान में छिपे रहने से हमेशा इंकार करता रहा है। विदेश मंत्री एस. एम. कृष्णा ने क्वालालमपुर में संवाददाताओं से यह बात कही।
श्री कृष्णा ने कल कहा था कि बिन लादेन का मारा जाना एक बड़ी घटना है।
उन्होंने कहा कि आतंकवाद पर काबू पाने के लिए विश्व के संयुक्त प्रयासों में कमी नहीं होनी चाहिए और भारत के पड़ोस में आतंकवादियों के लिए सुरक्षित शरण स्थलों को खत्म किया जाना चाहिए।
श्री कृष्णा मलेशिया की तीन दिन की सरकारी यात्रा पर हैं। क्वालालामपुर में आज उन्होंने मलेशिया के विदेश मंत्री अनीफाह अमान के साथ पांचवे संयुक्त आयोग समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किए।

अरूणाचल प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री दोरजी खांडू और अन्य चार व्यक्तियों के साथ लापता हेलीकॉप्टर का कोई सुराग नहीं मिल पाया है। सेना के हजारों जवान और पुलिस, अर्द्धसैनिक बल तथा स्थानीय ग्रामीण सुखोई विमान से ली गई तस्वीरों द्वारा चिन्हित इलाकों में छानबीन कर रहे हैं। मौसम लगातार खराब बने रहने से तलाशी अभियान में रुकावट रही है। केन्द्रीय मंत्री वी. नारायणसामी ने कहा है कि सात क्षेत्रों को तलाशी के लिए चिन्हित किया गया है, इनमें भूटान का भी एक क्षेत्र है। केन्द्रीय गृह मंत्रालय ने आज आपदा प्रबंधन का एक दल भी अरूणाचल प्रदेश भेजा है।
इस बीच, पूवोर्ंत्तर राज्यों के मामलों के मंत्री बी. के. हाण्डिक ने तलाशी के लिए केन्द्र सरकार से और सुरक्षाबल उपलब्ध कराने का अनुरोध किया है।

उपराष्ट्रपति मोहम्मद हामिद अंसारी ने कहा है कि आम नागरिकों को शासन के केन्द्र में लाने लिए एक नई लोक नीति की जरूरत है। नई दिल्ली में संघ लोकसेवा आयोग द्वारा शासन और सार्वजनिक सेवा विषय पर आयोजित द्वितीय वार्षिक व्याख्यानमाला में उन्होंने कहा कि ऐसी अनेक मिसालें मौजूद हैं जब प्रभावशाली लोगों ने अपने पैसे और रसूख की बदौलत कानून के शासन को चोट पहुंचाई।

पटियाला में इंडियन ओपन ग्रां प्री एथलेटिक्स प्रतियोगिता में झारखण्ड के गुरमीत सिंह ने पुरूषों की 20 किलोमीटर पैदल चाल में राष्ट्रीय रिकॉर्ड बनाते हुए स्वर्ण जीता। उन्होंने यह दूरी एक घन्टा,तीस मिनट, तीन-पांच सैकण्ड में पूरी की।

पुरूषो की सौ मीटर दौड़ महाराष्ट्र के कृष्ण कुमार राणे ने जीती। महिलाओं की सौ मीटर दौड़ का स्वर्ण जी. मोनिका को मिला।
पुरूषों की लोंग जम्प में शमशेर सिंह ने स्वर्ण पदक जीता।

About 85 per cent polling was recorded in the 4th phase of Assembly Elections in West Bengal today. Polls were held for 63 Assembly Constituencies spread over four districts covering East Midnapur, Howrah, Hoogly and parts of Burdwan districts. Briefing reporters in New Delhi, Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi said that polling was totally peaceful 

Mr. Zutshi said, four cases of poll-boycott by the local people have also been reported as they registered their protest against negligence in development works. The Additional Chief Electoral officer N. K. Sahana told our Kolkata Correspondent that 171 electronic voting machines were replaced from various polling booths due to technical snag. Two presiding officers and two polling officers were removed from duties for violation of model code of conduct and for illness. We have a report from our Correspondent:  

The Poll percentage in four districts once again beat the previous records. Peaceful voting was also reported from vulnerable areas in Singur, Arambagh, Goghat in Hoogly, Khejuri, Nandigram in East Midnapur, Purbasthali and Mongalkot in Burdwan Districts. Two special observers appointed by the Election Commission, Mr. Sudhir Kumar Rakesh and Mr.S. Srinivasan monitored the poll process in four districts though out the day. Coming out in huge number for voting people of the state once again proved their sincerity in the efforts of the Election Commission for better participation for stronger democracy. An estimated 63 per cent voters today exercised their franchise in the fifth phase of panchayat polls at 842 gram panchayats in 51 blocks of Bihar. No major incident was reported from any part of the state. AIR Patna correspondent reports that Katihar district recorded the highest voter turnout at 73 per cent, while Gaya district witnessed the lowest turnout at 53 per cent. Over eight hundred persons including a presiding officer were arrested as  preventive measures during today's poll.

The Delhi High Court today issued contempt notices to nine office bearers of the pilots' union for disobeying its order to call-off the strike. It has given two weeks time to the pilots to respond to the notice. Pulling up the striking Pilots and Air India Management for their rigid attitude, the court appointed a Council to assist both parties in resolving the stand off. The Court had yesterday directed the pilots to end their strike immediately and also asked the management to consider their demands.

The Government has said that talks will be held only after the pilots call off their strike. The pilots on the other side maintained that they will call off there strike only after the  derecognition of their union is revoked and its sacked office bearers are reinstated. Meanwhile, the passengers continue to have a harrowing time with the national carrier curtailing its domestic operations till the 6th of this month as part of the contingency schedule.

The Enforcement Directorate has issued summons under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to DMK MP Kanimozhi and four others named in The CBI charge sheet in the 2G spectrum allocation scam. Sources said, besides Kanimozhi, the summons were issued to DMK-owned Kalaignar TV Managing Director Sharad Kumar, Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwa's cousin Asif Balwa, Director of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd Rajeev Agarwal and Karim Murani of Cineyug Films (Pvt) Ltd Former Telecom Minister A Raja and eight others including former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura and three telecom companies were indicted by the CBI in its first chargesheet filed on April 2nd in the 2G scam.

Eleven policemen were killed and at least 23 injured when suspected Maoists ambushed a police team in Lohardaga district of Jharkhand today. IGP (Operations) R K Malik said in Ranchi that the rebels triggered several landmines to ambush the security personnel at Dhardhariya prompting the CRPF and district police personnel, returning from Urumuru village, to open fire. A breakthrough continues to elude the search for the missing chopper carrying Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and four other persons till this evening. Thousands of army, police, paramilitary forces and local villagers are literally combing the areas identified by images taken by Sukhoi aircratft. Bad weather continues to hamper the search operations and IAF choppers on duty were grounded for most part of the day. Union minister V Narayanasamy said seven locations including one in Bhutan have now been specified for the search. Searches have already been  conducted in two locations without any result. The Union Home ministry has sent one disaster management team to Arunachal Pradesh today. Meanwhile, DoNER Minister B K Handique has urged the Central government to provide additional forces for the search.

With the aim of containing inflation, the Reserve Bank of India today raised its short-term lending and borrowing rates by 50 basis points, or 0.5 percent, each. Announcing its annual credit policy, the Reserve Bank increased its repo rate, or the rate at which it lends short-term funds to commercial banks, to 7.25 per cent, and its reverse repo rate, or the rate at which its borrows short-term funds from commercial banks, to 6.25 per cent. With this move, home, auto and other loans are set to become costlier. The RBI kept the Bank Rate and  the Cash Reserve Ratio unchanged. The RBI also forecast GDP growth of 8 percent for the current fiscal, against the government's projection of 9 per cent. The apex bank has also forecast an inflation rate of 6 percent by March 2012. RBI Governor D. Subbarao said, bringing down inflation, even at the cost of some growth in the short-run, should take precedence.

The RBI, however, gave some relief to general depositors by  increasing the savings bank rate to 4 per cent, from 3.5 per cent. We spoke to Economist D.K. Joshi about the new credit policy.

The Planning Commission today endorsed the RBI policy of hiking key rates by half a percentage point, saying it was necessary to contain inflation. Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia termed the raising of key and saving interest rates, as wise decisions. He expressed hope that GDP growth rate will be better than 8 per cent in the current financial year-2011-12.  Meanwhile, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma today urged the banks to provide loans on easy interest rates to the industry.  Reacting to the Credit Policy announced today, Mr. Sharma said that there should not be any escalation in RBI lending rates even after the policy.

 Falling for the seventh straight session, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed with a big loss of 463 points, or 2.4 percent, at 18,535, as investors sold especially interest rate sensitive stocks, after the Reserve Bank’s sharp hike in key policy rates, today. This is the longest losing streak of the Sensex since November 2008. The Sensex has already lost over 600 points in the last six trading sessions. The Nifty slumped 136 points, or 2.4 percent, to 5,565.  Stock markets in Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore dropped between 0.4 percent and 1.3 percent.  The rupee weakened 18 paise, to 44.51 against the dollar.  Gold fell 120 rupees, to 22,720 rupees per ten grams in Delhi.  And US crude oil futures slipped 1.18 dollars, to 112.34 dollars a barrel, while Brent crude stood just under 124 dollars a barrel. The government has cleared 21 foreign direct investment,  proposals worth 1,027 crore rupees. According to a Finance Ministry's statement a total of 47 FDI proposals were taken up by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board, in a meeting held on 20th of last month. The Board deferred decisions on 17 applications and rejected nine.

The United States today made it clear, it cannot believe that slain terrorist Osama bin Laden had no support system in Pakistan. US Deputy National Security Advisor for Counter-terrorism and Homeland Security, John Brennan told reporters in Washington that it is inconceivable that bin Laden did not have a support system in the country that allowed him to remain there for an extended period of time.

Mr. Brennan also, hinted at probing any official links, while several top lawmakers accused Islamabad of playing a double-game. Brennan's remarks came a day after Bin Laden was shot dead yesterday by US forces in a house just yards away from Pakistan's Military Academy in Abbottabad near Islamabad. This has raised questions whether the establishment had knowingly harboured him.

India today said, Pakistan, which had denied knowledge of Osama bin Laden's whereabouts, had a lot to explain in the aftermath of the killing of the dreaded terrorist on its soil. External Affairs Minister S M Krishna told this to reporters in Kuala Lumpur. Mr. Krishna had yesterday said, the world must not let down its united effort to eliminate the safe havens that have been provided to terrorists in its neighbourhood.

In Afghanistan, NATO-led forces killed at least 25 Taliban militants in the north-eastern province of Nuristan. Provincial governor Jamaluddin Badr said, the forces started the ground and air operations yesterday and foreign fighters were among those killed. Meanwhile, at least five Afghan guards were killed today in a NATO air strike along a highway in southern province of Ghazni.

In the IPL match now under way in Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders were 112 for 3 in 15.2 overs, against  Deccan Chargers, a short while ago. Both the teams have played eight games so far.  However, the Knight Riders are well placed in the IPL table.  With Ten points, they are in the third spot.  the Deccan Chargers, on the other hand, are seventh in the standings with only Six points. Mumbai Indians are currently leading the table with 12 points from only eight encounters.   Rajasthan Royals are following in the second place with Eleven Points from Nine matches.

Gurmeet Singh of Jharkhand has set a new national record in the men's 20 kilometre walk.   In the season-opening Indian Grand Prix at Patiala today, he improved upon the earlier mark by nearly three minutes to hog the limelight on the opening day of the event. Twentysix-year old Gurmeet clocked One Hour, twenty minutes, thirtyfive seconds at the NIS tracks.

India's para-swimming sensation Sharath Gayakwad clinched three medals -- a silver and two bronze -- at the just concluded Internationale Deutsche (IDM) Swimming Championships in Berlin, Germany. The 19-year-old, bagged a silver in the 200 metre Individual Medley  besides two bronze medals in the 50 metres Freestyle and 50 metres Butterfly.
