गोआ में कल ८१ प्रतिशत और उत्तर प्रदेश में सातवें और अंतिम चरण में ६२ प्रतिशत मतदान हुआ। गोआ विधानसभा की ४० सीटों के लिए वोट डाले गए और उत्तर प्रदेश में अंतिम चरण में १० जिलों की ६० सीटों के लिए वोट डाले गये। कल शाम पत्रकारों से बातचीत में मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त एस.वाई. कुरैशी ने बताया कि इन निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों में मतदान पूरी तरह शांतिपूर्ण रहा। उन्होंने कहा कि कल के मतदान के साथ ही पांच राज्यों के १२२ जिलों में ६९० विधानसभा सीटों के लिए मतदान संपन्न हो गया है। मणिपुर, उत्तराखंड, पंजाब, गोआ और उत्तर प्रदेश में चुनाव कराया गया। श्री कुरैशी ने बताया कि मणिपुर के अलावा अन्य सभी राज्यों में रिकॉर्ड मतदान हुआ। मणिपुर में ७९ दशमलव चार एक प्रतिशत मतदान हुआ जबकि २००७ में वहां ८४ दशमलव आठ तीन प्रतिशत मतदाताओं ने वोट डाले थे।

मंगलवार को पांचों राज्यों में वोटों की गिनती के इंतजाम के बारे में मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त ने बताया कि सभी निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों के लिए अलग-अलग मतगणना केंद्र स्थापित किए जाएंगे और १६८ स्थानों पर गिनती की जाएगी।

मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त ने आदर्श आचार संहिता को किसी तरह का संवैधानिक जामा पहनाने के प्रस्ताव का विरोध करते हुए कहा कि वर्तमान प्रणाली चुनाव में होने वाली गड़बड़ी रोकने में सक्षम है और ठीक ढंग से काम कर रही है।

निर्वाचन आयोग ने कल राज्यसभा के द्विवार्षिक चुनावों की घोषणा करते हुए बताया कि १५ राज्यों के जिन ५८ क्षेत्रों के प्रतिनिधियों का कार्यकाल अगले महीने पूरा हो रहा है उनके लिए ३० मार्च को वोट डाले जाएंगे। चुनाव कार्यक्रम की घोषणा करते हुए चुनाव आयोग ने बताया कि अधिसूचना १२ मार्च को जारी की जाएगी। नामांकन पत्र दाखिल करने की अंतिम तिथि १९ मार्च होगी। २२ मार्च तक नाम वापस लिए जा सकेंगे। बिहार विधान परिषद् के द्विवार्षिक चुनाव भी इसी के साथ कराए जाएंगे।

मणिपुर में पांच पर्वतीय जिलों में नौ विधानसभा क्षेत्रों के ६७ मतदान केंद्रों में आज फिर वोट डाले जा रहे हैं । इंफाल से प्राप्त खबरों में कहा गया है कि साफ मौसम होने के कारण भारी संख्या में लोग वोट देने के लिए लोग निकले हैं। सुबह सात बजे मतदान शुरू होने से काफी पहले मतदाताओं ने लंबी कतार लगानी शुरू कर दी।

लेटिनेंट जनरल बिक्रम सिंह भारत के नए सेनाध्यक्ष होंगे। वे ३१ मई को सेवानिवृत्त हो रहे सेनाध्यक्ष जनरल वी. के. सिंह का स्थान लेंगे। लगभग चालीस साल के अपने लंबे और शानदार करियर में लेटिनेंट जनरल बिक्रम सिंह ने सेना के विभिन्न महत्वपूर्ण पदों पर काम किया।वे नब्बे के दशक के प्रारंभ में कांगो में संयुक्त राष्ट्र शांति सेना के उप कमांडर और निकारागुआ तथा अल सल्वाडोर में संयुक्त राष्ट्र प्रेक्षक के रूप में भी काम कर चुके हैं।

उत्तर प्रदेश में गाजियाबाद की सीबीआई अदालत ने मायावती सरकार में पूर्व मंत्री बाबू सिंह कुशवाहा और बसपा विधायक राम प्रताप जायसवाल को १३ मार्च तक सीबीआई हिरासत में भेज दिया है। उन्हें करोड़ों रुपये के राष्ट्रीय ग्रामीण स्वास्थ्य मिशन घोटाले के सिलसिले में गिरतार करने के बाद अदालत में पेश किया गया।हमारे लखनऊ संवाददाता के अनुसार इस घोटाले में गिरतार होने वाले कुशवाहा और जायसवाल पहले राजनेता हैं। इन दोनों को विस्तृत पूछताछ के लिए नई दिल्ली में सीबीआई मुख्यालय बुलाया गया। चार घंटे की पूछताछ के बाद इनकी गिरतारी की गई। कुशवाहा पर जल निगम की निर्माण और डिजाइन सेवा द्वारा १३४ जिला अस्पतालों में सुविधाएं बढ़ाने के १३ करोड़ रुपये से ज्यादा के मामले में आरोप है। सीबीआई अब तक स्वास्थ्य मिशन में ३७० करोड़ रुपये की कथित गड़बड़ी से जुड़े १२ मामले दर्ज कर चुकी है।अब तक सीबीआई ने दस लोगों को गिरफ्‌तार किया है। कुशवाहा ने इन आरोपों का खंडन किया है।

ईरान के संसदीय चुनाव में राष्ट्रपति महमूद अहमदीनिजाद के कट्टरपंथी विरोधी आगे चल रहे हैं। शुरूआती परिणामों से पता चलता है कि लगभग ७५ प्रतिशत मतदाताओं ने कट्टरपंथी गुटों का समर्थन किया है। अयातुल्ला अली खामनेई के वफादारों को २९० सदस्यों की संसद में आसानी से बहुमत मिलने की संभावना है। इनमें राजधानी तेहरान की महत्वपूर्ण ३० सीटें भी शामिल हैं।प्रेस टीवी की खबरों की मुताबिक कट्टरपंथी धड़े को अब तक ११२ सीटें मिल चुकी हैं और सुधारवादियों की झोली में २८ सीटें गई हैं। राष्ट्रपति के गुट को महज १० सीटें मिली हैं। हालांकि वोटों की गिनती अब तक पूरी नहीं हुई है और अब तक साफ तस्वीर नहीं है कि कितने उम्मीदवारों को दो तिहाई बहुमत मिला है और कितनों को फेस ऑफ मुकाबले का सामना करना होगा।

भारत और अरब लीग ने सीरिया संकट का शांतिपूर्ण समाधान निकाले जाने की मांग की है। काहिरा में कल विदेशमंत्री एस एम कृष्णा और अरब लीग के महासचिव जनरल नबील-अल-अरबी के बीच हुई बैठक में इस मुद्दे पर चर्चा की गई। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि दोनों नेताओं ने अरब जगत और पश्चिम एशिया क्षेत्र से संबंधित विभिन्न मुद्दों पर विचारों का आदान-प्रदान किया।

सीरिया के संकट के बारे में एसएम कृष्णा ने कहा कि सभी पक्षों को वहां फौरन हिंसा बंद करनी चाहिए। नबील अल अराबी ने सहमति जताई और कहा कि सीरिया के संकट के हल के लिए वहां अंतरराष्ट्रीय संगठनों को मदद के लिए जाने की इजाजत देनी चाहिए। भारत और अरब लीग २२ और २३ मई को अबू धाबी में पूंजी निवेश परियोजना चालू करने के बारे में चर्चा करेंगे। भारत-अरब सांस्कृतिक महोत्सव विश्व में आयोजित करने को लेकर भारत और अरब लीग के बीच समझौता हुआ है। अरब लीग के प्रमुख नबील अल अराबी ने भारत से मानव संसाधन, खासतौर पर शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में मदद देने की मांग की। अतुल तिवारी, आकाशवाणी समाचार काहिरा।

रूस में राष्ट्रपति चुनाव के लिए पहले चरण में देश के सुदूर पूर्व में मतदान हो रहा है। अनुमान में कहा गया है कि व्लादिमीर पुतिन भारी बहुमत से राष्ट्रपति चुन लिए जाएंगे। श्री पुतिन सन दो हजार से दो हजार आठ तक रूस के राष्ट्रपति थे लेकिन संविधाने की व्यवस्था के अनुसार वह लगातार तीसरी बार राष्ट्रपति नहीं बन सकते थे।
राष्ट्रपति चुनाव में उनका मुकाबला चार उम्मीदवारों से है जिनमें से तीन को वह पिछले चुनावों में हरा चुके हैं।

गुजरात में एक स्थानीय अदालत ने २००२ में हुए दंगों पर विशेष जांच दल की रिपोर्ट सार्वजनिक करने के जकिया जाफरी के अनुरोध को यह कहते हुए खारिज कर दिया है कि विशेष जांच दल ने अब तक संबंधित सामग्री प्रस्तुत नहीं की है। २००२ के दंगों में मारे गए कांग्रेस सांसद एहसान जाफरी की विधवा जकिया जाफरी ने मुहरबंद लिफाफे में पेश विशेष जांच दल की रिपोर्ट जारी किए जाने की मांग की थी।

81 per cent polling was recorded in Goa and 62 per cent in the 7th and last phase of Assembly Elections in Uttar Pradesh, voting for which took place yesterday. The elections were held for 40 seats in Goa and 60 seats spread over 10 districts of Uttar Pradesh in the last phase. Briefing reporters in New Delhi last evening, the Chief Election Commissioner, CEC, S.Y Quraishi said that election in these Assembly constituencies remained totally peaceful. He said, with the completion of yesterday's election, polling for all 690 Assembly constituencies spread over 122 districts in five states has been completed. Elections were held in Manipur, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Uttar Padesh. Mr Quraishi said, voter turnout was the highest ever and records have been set in all these states except Manipur where turnout was 79.41 per cent as against 84.83 per cent in 2007.

"Highest ever turn out in history was recorded in these elections in all states except Manipur, where the turn out was lower. Very interesting achievement. Highest turn out of women voters. Women have outdone men in UP, in Uttarakhand and in Manipur."

Highlighting the arrangements for counting of votes for all five states on Tuesday, the Chief Election Commissioner said, full security arrangements have been made for the counting of votes.

The CEC also opposed any move to provide statutory backing to the Model Code of Conduct, saying the present system, which has put a check on poll malpractices, was working fine.

In Manipur, re-poll in 67 polling stations spread over nine assembly constituencies of five hill districts began at seven this morning. The re-poll was ordered by the Election Commission in view of the large scale electoral malpractices during the January 28 state assembly elections. Our Correspondent reports that good weather has created a favourable atmosphere for a huge voter turnout in most of the polling stations. Unprecedented security measures have been taken and there is a tight security cover in and around all the polling stations.

The Election Commission of India, ECI has announced the schedule for biennial polls to 58 Rajya Sabha seats from 15 states, whose representatives complete their term next month. Announcing the schedule for filling up vacancies in the Rajya Sabha, the ECI said, the notification would be issued on March 12. The last date for filing of nominations is March 19 while that for withdrawal is March 22. Polling would be held on March 30. Biennial elections to the Council of States from Bihar shall also be held on the same date.

Lt General Bikram Singh will be the next Army Chief. An official press statement says that Lt Gen Bikram Singh will succeed Gen V.K. Singh, who retires on May 31 this year. Lt General Bikram Singh was commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment on March 31, 1972. During his long and distinguished career, spanning nearly 40 years, he has served in a variety of command and staff appointments. He has also served as Deputy Force Commander of a multi-nation UN Peace Keeping Mission in Congo and as UN Observer in Nicaragua and El Salvador during the early 90s.

In Uttar Pradesh, a Ghaziabad based special CBI court has sent former Minister in the Mayawati government, Babu Singh Kushwaha and BSP MLA, Ram Pratap Jaiswal to CBI custody till March 13. They were produced before the court after their arrest by the probe agency in connection with the multi-crore rupee National Rural Health Mission, NRHM scam in the state. Our Lucknow Correspondent reports that Kushwaha and Jaiswal are the first politicians to be arrested in the NRHM scam. Both of them were called by the CBI to its headquarters in New Delhi for detailed questioning. They were arrested after four hours of interrogation. Kushwaha is accused in the case relating to up gradation of 134 district hospitals for an amount of more than 13 crore rupees by the Construction and Design Service of Jal Nigam. The CBI has so far registered 12 cases involving alleged irregularities to the tune of 370 crore in the utilisation of the NRHM fund. It has arrested 10 persons, including retired state Director General of Family Welfare, Dr. S P Ram, General Manager of the Jal Nigam Construction and Design Services, P K Jain and retired MD of state Public Sector Unit Shreetron India Ltd, G K Batra.

In Gujarat, a local court has rejected the plea of Zakia Jaffrey for making public the Special Investigation Team, SIT report on the 2002 riots, stating that the SIT has not yet submitted all the related material. Zakia Jaffrey, the widow of former Congress MP, Ehsan Jaffrey, killed in the 2002 riots, had made a plea to release the SIT report submitted in a sealed cover. Metropolitan Magistrate M S Bhatt, while rejecting the plea, said the SIT is yet to submit materials related to the report. The court said, as per the Supreme Court order, it is only after the SIT submitted its full report on the riots that it could draw any conclusion. Last month, the SIT had submitted its report in a sealed cover on a complaint by Zakia demanding that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other top politicians, police officers and bureaucrats should be made accused in the 2002 riots cases.

In Iran, loyalists of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are likely to get a comfortable majority in the 290-member parliament. These include the politically important 30 seats in the capital Teheran. Early results show an estimated 75 per cent supported the hard-line group or the Principality. According to Press TV reports, the conservative faction has so far been assigned 112 seats and the reformists, 28 seats. The President's wing trails with just 10 seats. Experts say, the defeat of President Ahmedinejad’s loyalists is an indication that his grip on power is diminishing.

India and the Arab League have called for a peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria. The issue came up for a discussion during the meeting of the External Affairs Minister SM Krishna and the Arab League Secretary General Nabil al Arabi in Cairo yesterday.

"During the hour long meeting with the Arab League Chief Nabil Al Araby, the External Affairs Minister SM Krishna shared views on a wide range of issues in the Arab world and the West Asia region. On the crisis in Syria, Shri Krishna said, the violence from all sides must end, a Syrian led inclusive dialogue process should begin and there should be no external interference. Nabil Al Arabi said, humanitarian assistance must reach out to the affected civilians. In order to give a boost to the bilateral co-operation, India and Arab League decided to hold India-Arab Investment Project Conclave on 22nd and 23rd May in Abu Dhabi. Arab League Chief showed keen interest in Human Resource Development issues, especially in the field of education. Atul Tiwary, AIR News in Cairo."

US rescue crews were searching for survivors after a string of tornadoes killed at least 32 people across several eastern states, causing epic destruction in some areas. Authorities reported deaths in the states of Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and Alabama. The twisters tore apart homes, mangled vehicles and even threw a school bus into a building. Heavy damage was also reported near Louisville, Kentucky, where a tornado touched down on Friday evening.

"In Tennis, the Indian duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna has won the Men's Doubles title in the Dubai Open ATP Championships. In the finals yesterday, the fourth seeded Indian duo defeated the Polish combine of Marcin Matkowski and Mariusz Fyrstenberg 6-4, 3-6, 10-5. Meanwhile, Switzerland's Roger Federer yesterday won the Men's Singles category, beating Briton Andy Murray in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. This is Federer's 72nd tour title and the fifth Dubai trophy. In the Women's World Cup Kabaddi in Patna, India will today take on Japan in the semi-finals today. In the second semi-final, Iran will clash with Thaiand. In the quarter finals yesterday, India thrashed Indonesia 66-20, Japan defeated Bangladesh 17-15, Thailand beat Sri Lanka 30-18, while Iran trounced South Korea, 40-16. And in the tri-nation ODI cricket series, the first final between Australia and Sri Lanka will be played at Brisbane today. Three finals will be played in this tournament. The Southern Region Bulk LPG Transport Owners Association has said that a decision on withdrawing the strike would be taken after a meeting of its members on Monday. The decision of the Association was conveyed by its leaders at a meeting conducted by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Department to find a solution to the transporters strike. Addressing press persons in Chennai, Civil Supplies Commissioner P.M. Basheer Ahamed said, a few issues remained to be resolved between the oil companies and the transporters.

असम में मुख्य वन सरंक्षक अभिजीत राभा और रेंज वन अधिकारी रंजन बरूआ को अपहरणकर्ताओं कें चंगुल से मुक्त कराने के लिए कार्बी आंगलांग जिले में सिंघासन पहाड़ियों में सुरक्षा बलों द्वारा व्यापक पैमाने पर तलाशी अभियान चलाया जा रहा है। कल दोपहर बाद मुख्यालय दीफू से वापस लौटते समय मंजा थाना क्षेत्र में कार्बी पीपुल्स लिबरेशन टाइगर-के पी एल टी के संदिग्ध उग्रवादियों ने इन दोनों अधिकारियों को अगवा कर लिया था। पुलिस ने बताया कि उग्रवादी इन अधिकारियों की रिहाई के बदले एक करोड़ रूपये की फिरौती की मांग रहे हैं।

पांच राज्यों-उत्तरप्रदेश, उत्तराखंड, पंजाब, गोआ और मणिपुर की विधानसभाओं के चुनाव शांतिपूर्वक संपन्न हो गये हैं। लेकिन मणिपुर में पांच पर्वतीय जिलों वाली नौ विधानसभा क्षेत्रों के ६७ मतदान केन्द्रों पर आज पुनर्मतदान चल रहा है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि ताजा समाचार मिलने तक ६८ फीसदी मतदान हो चुका है। मतदान केन्द्रों पर मतदाताओं की लंबी कतारें लगी हुई है। शांतिपूर्ण मतदान के लिए सुरक्षा के व्यापक प्रबंध किये गये हैं।

भारतीय सेना ने आज ब्रह्‌मोस मिसाइल का सफलतापूर्वक परीक्षण किया और राजस्थान में फील्ड फायरिंग रेंज में इससे पूर्व निर्धारित लक्ष्य को निशाना बनाया गया। सेना के प्रवक्ता कर्नल जगदीप दहिया ने नई दिल्ली में बताया कि भारतीय सेना की दूसरी ब्रह्‌मोस इकाई पश्चिमी सेक्टर में एक गुप्त स्थान पर अपना अभियान चला रही है। उन्होंने कहा कि इससे जमीन से जमीन पर मार करने वाले सामरिक मिसाइल क्षमता के विकास की पुष्टि होती है।

केरल में नौसेना के गोताखोरों को अलपुझा तट के पास समुद्र में डूबी मछली पकड़ने वाली नौका के मलबे से एक मछुआरे का शव मिला है। बृहस्पतिवार को एक व्यापारिक नौका से टकरा कर यह डूब गई थी। कोच्चि में नौसेना सूत्रों ने बताया कि दो और शवों की तलाश जारी है। नौका का मलबा, ४७ मीटर नीचे समुद्र की तलहटी में मिला।

गुजरात में केन्द्र सरकार के सर्वशिक्षा अभियान के तहत कच्छ जिले में नमक कामगारों के बच्चों के लिए चलाए गए टेंट स्कूल परियोजना के अच्छे परिणाम सामने आए हैं। हमारे भुज संवाददाता शैलेस व्यास ने खबर दी है कि ओडीशा, बिहार, उत्तर प्रदेश और मध्य प्रदेश के तीन सौ से भी अधिक बच्चे इस परियोजना के अंतर्गत अपनी मातृभाषा में प्राथमिक शिक्षा ग्रहण कर रहे हैं।

असम में गांव गांव तक स्वास्थ्य सेवाएं उपलब्ध कराने वाला महत्वाकांक्षी कार्यक्रम संजीवनी काफी सफल रहा है। इसके तहत दुर्गम तटीय इलाकों में भी बेहतर स्वास्थ्य सुविधाएं मुहैया करायी जा सकीं है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि राष्ट्रीय ग्रामीण स्वास्थ्य मिशन के अंतर्गत गंभीर बीमारियों के असरदार प्रबंधन के लिए उनकी पहले से पहचान करने और अन्य सेवाएं उपलब्ध कराने के उद्देश्य से हर महीने एक तय दिन यह कार्यक्रम आयोजित किया जाता है।

प्रदेश के स्वास्थ्य मंत्री डॉ० हेमन्ता बिसव शर्मा ने कहा है कि असम गांव में इस तरह की सुविधा मुहैया करने वाले देश के दूसरे प्रदेश हैं। असम में २०११ के मार्च महीने से यह कार्यक्रम ७८ मोबाइल स्वास्थ्य ईकाइयों के जरिये तीन हजार आठ सौ गांव में चलाया जा रहा है। पहले चरण के सफलता के बाद अगले वित्तीय वर्ष में और आठ हजार गांवों में यह अभियान शुरू किया जायेगा। मधुमेह, हाइपरटेंशन, दोषपूर्ण दृष्टि, अस्थमा, टीबी और मिरगी जैसे पुराने रोगों की जांच इसके तहत किया जा रहा है। अब तक ६२ लाख से ज्यादा लोगों की जांच किया गया है जिसमें तीन हजार पांच सौ मधुमेह, १७ हजार हाइपरटेंशन और एक हजार पांच सौ अस्थमा के मामले है। मानस प्रतिम शर्मा, आकाशवाणी समाचार, गुवाहाटी।

पोलैंड में दक्षिणी हिस्से में स्थिति शच्‌कोचिनी में दो रेलगाड़ियों की आमने-सामने की टक्कर में १४ लोगों की मौत हो गई और ६० से अधिक घायल हो गये। रेल अधिकारियों ने बताया कि एक ही पटरी पर दो रेलगाड़ियों के आ जाने के कारण यह दुर्घटना हुई। घायलों के अस्पताल पहुंचाने के लिए वारसा और व्रोत्सवाक से हेलिकॉप्टर घटनास्थल पर पहुंच गये है। प्रधानमंत्री डोनाल्ड टस्क ने अपने मंत्रिमंडल के तीन सहयोगियों के साथ आज तड़के घटना स्थल का जायजा लिया।

In Assam, security forces have launched a massive search operation in Singhasan hills of Karbi Anglong district to rescue abducted Chief Conservator of Forest Abhijeet Rabha and the Range Forest Officer Ranjan Baruah from the militants. Suspected Karbi Peoples’ Liberation Tiger, KPLT ultras waylaid the officers blocking the road by blazing some trees and kidnapped both of them at gun-point from Budlok area of Singhasan hills under Manja Police station yesterday afternoon when they were returning to headquarter at Diphu.

Rabha, an Indian Forest Service officer, along with two Japanese experts and other forest officials went to the Singhasan hills to conduct survey of some medicinal plants. Other members of the group, however, returned safely. Police said the militants have demanded one crore rupees as ransom for the release of the kidnapped officers.

In Manipur, re-polling is progressing peacefully at 67 polling stations spread over nine assembly constituencies in five hill districts. About 60 percent voting has been recorded till 12.30 PM. The counting of votes for assembly elections in five states will be taken up on Tuesday.

In Uttar Pradesh, the district election officials are gearing up for the counting which will begin at 8 AM. Elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure smooth conduct of counting. The entire process will be videographed for which cameras are being installed. AIR correspondent reports that the observers have started reaching the counting centres.

The stage 5 set for counting, the election commission and district administration are making all-out efforts to conduct a peaceful counting. The commission has put a restriction on victory processions within 200 metres of counting centres. It remains to be seen that which candidate or party splashes colours this holi. The Indian Army today successfully launched BrahMos missile and destroyed the pre-selected target in the field firing ranges in Rajasthan. Army Spokesperson Colonel Jagdeep Dahiya said in New Delhi, the second BrahMos unit of Indian Army has been operationalised at an undisclosed location in the western sector. He said, this is in conformity and pursuit of operational and strategic surface to surface missile capability development.

AIR correspondent reports that BrahMos has the capability of attacking surface targets by flying as low as 10 metres in altitude. It can gain a speed of Mach 2.8, and has a maximum range of 290 kms.

In Kerala, naval divers have found the body of a fisherman, from the wreckage of the fishing boat that sank off the coast of Alappuzha, after it was hit by a merchant vessel last Thursday. Aiming to provide food security to the poor, the centre’s has introduced the food security bill in parliament that will give legal entitlement of cheaper foodgrains to 63.5 percent of the country's population. Noted Agricultural scientist Prof M.S.Swaminathan welcomes the initiative to enlarge the food basket by including nutri-cereals like ragi, bajra and maize for distribution under the PDS . In Poland, at least fourteen people have been killed and more than 60 injured as two trains collided head-on in Szczekociny in southern parts of the country. A Polish railways official said the collision took place last night between the trains running on the same track. One was en route to the southern city of Krakow from the capital Warsaw, while the other was on way to the capital city from the south-eastern city of Przemysl.

Helicopter ambulances from Warsaw and Wroclaw have been pressed into service to take the injured to hospitals. Prime Minister Donald Tusk arrived at the scene early this morning with three of his cabinet ministers. In the United States, the death toll in the violent storms and tornadoes that swept across the country's Midwest and Southern parts on Friday has gone up to 38 in five states. Officials said emergency teams are searching for survivors of the powerful storm that triggered at least 90 tornadoes, killing 19 people in Kentucky, 14 in neighboring Indiana, three in Ohio and one each in Alabama and Georgia.

The storms, leaving a trail of destruction and causing millions of dollars in damage, came two days after an earlier round of storms killed 13 people in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Tennessee, bringing the overall death toll to 51. The National Weather Service has issued a fresh tornado and hail storm warning for the area.

In Assam, Village Health Outreach programme Sanjeevani h as achieved success in providing health care facilities in this far uncovered riverine areas. On a specified date every month, outreach initiative is taken up under National Rural Health Mission aiming at early identification, screening and referral services for effective Chronic disease management.

भारतीय सेना ने आज ब्रह्‌मोस मिसाइल का सफलतापूर्वक परीक्षण किया और राजस्थान में फील्ड फायरिंग रेंज में इससे पूर्व निर्धारित लक्ष्य को निशाना बनाया गया। सेना के प्रवक्ता कर्नल जगदीप दहिया ने नई दिल्ली में बताया कि भारतीय सेना की दूसरी ब्रह्‌मोस इकाई पश्चिमी सेक्टर में एक गुप्त स्थान पर अपना अभियान चला रही है। उन्होंने कहा कि इससे जमीन से जमीन पर मार करने वाले सामरिक मिसाइल क्षमता के विकास की पुष्टि होती है।

India and Egypt have agreed to carry forward their relations to a new level. External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna met the top Egyptian leaders in Cairo and said India will provide all possible assistance to Egypt in its rebuilding efforts. In Manipur, about 70 percent polling has been reported in re-polling at 63 polling stations across nine assembly constituencies in the five hill districts. Re-polling has been completed at three this afternoon without any untoward incident . Here is a report from AIR Imphal Correspondent.

The Election Commission ordered re-poll at 67 polling stations today following large scale electoral malpractices during the January 28 polling for the 60-member state assembly elections. However, the Commission has rescheduled re-poll at four polling stations under Tamei Assembly Constituency in Tamenglong District as the polling personnel could not reach the remote polling stations in the hilly terrain in time due to heavy rain and landslides. In Uttarakhand, the countdown has begun for the counting of votes for 70 assembly seats scheduled on Tuesday. AIR correspondents reports that all arrangements have been put in place for counting of votes..

According to joint chief election officer, Saujanya, counting of votes would be held at 16 counting centres across the states from 8 in the morning. Around 4,920 counting personnel would be directly involved in the counting process in the state. Counting would first beginng from the postal ballots. Election Commission has appointed 36 observers to ensure free and fair counting in the state. In Punjab, arrangements for the counting of votes on March 6 have been made for all the 117 assembly segments.

Official figures released in Goa indicate a record polling percentage of 81.43 in yesterday's polling. The highest percentage recorded earlier was 72.47 percent in the 1989 assembly elections.

In the last assembly elections, 69.99 percent votes were polled. The main contest in the Assembly elections this time is between the ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party alliance and the Bharatiya Janata Party and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party combine.

In Assam, search operation has been intensified today in Singhasan hills of Karbi Anglong district to find out the whereabouts of the abducted forest officials. Suspected Karbi Peoples’ Liberation Tiger, KPLT militant abducted Chief Conservator of Forest Abhijit Rabha and Range Forest Officer Ranjan Baruah yesterday from Batlog area when they were returning to Diphu after conducting a survey.

Talking to AIR, Karbi Anglong’s Superintendent of Police said that all steps have been taken to rescue the forest officials safely. He further said that, police has made significant progress in the rescue operation and hoped to bring them back soon. Meanwhile, KPLT has denied its role in the abduction case. It is the second incident of abduction in the hill district within a span of two months. The anti-talk militant group of Karbi Anglong district is suspected to be involved in both the incidents. All the political parties, various organizations urged the kidnappers to release both the forest officials. In Odisha, security forces have demolished a Maoist camp in Malkangiri district. The police said that acting on a tip-off, BSF jawans and police personnel raided a rebel camp in Similipadar forest of Badapada in Chitrakonda area. The ultras present in the camp disappeared into dense forests.

Police recovered weapons and volumes of Maoist literature and medicines from the site. In another incident in Nuapada district, about 40 heavily armed Maoists attacked a stone crusher unit of a private builder and threatened the workers and set afire 15 vehicles and a machine.

The Indian Army today successfully launched BrahMos missile which destroyed the pre-selected target in the field firing ranges in Rajasthan. In Madhya Pradesh, the CBI today raided official residence of BJP MLA Druvnarayan Singh in Bhopal in connection with RTI activist Shehla Masood murder case. The investigating agency had quizzed Mr. Singh and his close friend Sanjay Gupta last night. Mr. Singh, who represents Bhopal Central constituency, was chairman of MP Tourism Corporation sometime back.

It is believed that he had close links with both slain Shehla Masood as well as alleged conspirator Zahida Pervez. Bhopal-based Interior Designer Zahida her close friend Saba Farooqui and another person Saqib Ali are in CBI remand up to 6th March in teh Shehla Masood murder case. Shehla Masood was shot dead outside her residence at Kohefiza locality in Bhopal on 16th August last year.

In Pakistan, former Interior Minister of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Aftab Ahmad Sherpao and his son Sikander Sherpao, escaped an assassination bid when a suicide bomber attacked their his motorcade in his native Charsadda district.

However, a policeman and a little girl were killed while a member of the Assembly and six others were injured in the bombing. The explosion badly damaged the car in which Mr. Sherpao and his son who is a sitting member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, were travelling. A spokesman of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, Mohmand Agency claimed responsibility for the attack.

In Poland, at least fourteen people were killed and more than 60 injured as two trains collided head-on in Szczekociny in southern parts of the country. A Polish railways official said the collision took place last night when both the trains suddenly came on the same track.

Around one lakh book people visited the 20th edition of New Delhi World Book Fair on the last day at Pragati Maidan in the National Capital to find books of their own choice. The 9 day biennial event which concluded this evening witnessed around 7 lakh visitors which is three lakh more than the previous year. Australia registered a thrilling 15-run victory against Sri Lanka in the first final of the tri-series in Brisbane today. Batting first, the hosts posted a formidable total of 321 for the loss of six wickets. For Australia, David Warner cracked a scintillating 163. In reply, the Lankan batsmen put up a strong fight while chasing a big target and their tail-enders produced some lusty hits but they fell short by 15 runs. A report from AIR sports desk:

The visiting side would have been in for a humiliating defeat but for the seventh wicket stand between Upul Tharanga and Kulasekara who put up 104 runs off 70 balls. This brought the islanders in a position from where they could achieve a breath-taking win. With persistent drizzle arouond, the Australian bowlers were finding it difficult to grip the ball and there were a lot of full-tosses and wides bowled in the closing stages. Earlier, David Warner literally clobbered the Sri Lankan bowling attack, especially Lasith Malinga. In fact, his slingers are not posing any problem to the batsmen in the last two matches.
