१०वां प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस समारोह आज से जयपुर में शुरू हो रहा है। इसका औपचारिक उद्घाटन प्रधानमंत्री डॉ. मनमोहन सिंह कल करेंगे। त्रिनिदाद और टोबैगो की प्रधानमंत्री कमला प्रसाद बिसेसर भी उद्घाटन समारोह में मौजूद रहेंगी। तीन दिन के समारोह के लिए ५४ देशों से लगभग १५ सौ प्रवासी भारतीय जयपुर पहुंच गए हैं। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा देवीसिंह पाटील सोमवार को समापन सत्र को संबोधित करेंगी और प्रवासी भारतीय सम्मान प्रदान करेंगी।

तीन दिन के इस समारोह के दौरान जल प्रबंध और सौर ऊर्जा, स्वास्थ्य, पर्यटन और ग्रामीण जैसे विषयों पर संगोष्ठियों का आयोजन होगा। वित्त मंत्री श्री प्रणव मुखर्जी समारोह के औपचारिक उद्घाटन के बाद एक सत्र में समावेशी विकास, उदारीकरण के दो दशक विषय पर एक व्याख्यान देंगे। समारोह के आखिरी दिन राजस्थान, गोवा, गुजरात, मध्यप्रदेश, केरल और झारखंड के मुख्यमंत्री भी वैश्विक संदर्भ में राज्यों के नए प्रयास और अवसर विषय पर बातचीत करेंगे। प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस स्थानीय उद्यमशील लोगों के लिए अनिवासी भारतीयों के साथ संवाद का एक नायाब अवसर भी उपलब्ध कराता है। अनुराग वाजपेयी, आकाशवाणी समाचार, जयपुर।

भारत ने त्रिनिदाद और टोबैगो के साथ पांच समझौतों पर हस्ताक्षर कर दोनो देशों के आर्थिक और सांस्कृतिक संबंधों को और मजबूती दी है। नई दिल्ली में प्रधानमंत्री डॉ. मनमोहन सिंह और त्रिनिदाद और टोबैगो की प्रधानमंत्री कमला प्रसाद बिसेसर के बीच शिष्टमंडल स्तर की बातचीत के बाद समझौतों पर हस्ताक्षर किये गए। शिक्षा और स्वास्थ्य क्षेत्र में तकनीकी सहयोग के सहमति पत्रों के अलावा हवाई सेवा समझौता काफी महत्वपूर्ण है। संयुक्त वक्तव्य में कहा गया है कि दोनों नेताओं ने आतंकवाद, जलवायु परिवर्तन और संयुक्त राष्ट्र में सुधारों सहित विभिन्न अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मुद्दों पर विचार- विमर्श किया। त्रिनिदाद और टोबैगो की प्रधानमंत्री ने संयुक्त राष्ट्र सुरक्षा परिषद में स्थायी सदस्यता के भारत के दावे का फिर समर्थन किया।
दोनों पक्षों के बीच ऊर्जा क्षेत्र में सहयोग और बढ़ाने पर मुख्य रूप से चर्चा हुई। पेट्रोलियम और प्राकृतिक गैस मंत्री एस जयपाल रेड्डी के नेतृत्व में भारतीय शिष्टमंडल आपसी सहयोग के क्षेत्रों का पता लगाने के लिए इस साल त्रिनिदाद और टोबैगो का दौरा करेगा। तेल और गैस संसाधनों से समृद्ध त्रिनिदाद और टोबैगो कैरिबियाई क्षेत्र में सबसे बड़ी और मजबूत अर्थव्यवस्था वाला देश है।
दोनों देश परम्परागत और फिर से इस्तेमाल की जाने वाली ऊर्जा, लघु और मध्यम उपक्रमों, औषधि, स्वास्थ्य, पर्यटन और मनोरंजन के क्षेत्रों से लेकर कई अन्य महत्वपूर्ण क्षेत्रों में व्यापार और निवेश बढ़ाने पर भी सहमत हुये।
बातचीत के बाद पत्रकारों को संबोधित करते हुए प्रधानमंत्री डॉ. मनमोहन सिंह ने आशा व्यक्त की कि यूपीए के कुछ सहयोगी दलों के साथ अस्थाई समस्याओं का हल निकाल लिया जाएगा।

उत्तर प्रदेश में निर्वाचन आयोग ने चुनाव से जुड़े अधिकारियों से कहा है कि विधानसभा चुनाव के दौरान नेपाल से जुड़ी सीमा और अंतर्राज्यीय सीमाओं पर सुरक्षा के उचित प्रबंध करें। आयोग ने निर्देश दिया है कि आदर्श आचार संहिता को प्राथमिकता के आधार पर कड़ाई से लागू किया जाए।
मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त डॉ० एस वाई कुरैशी, चुनाव आयुक्त वी एस सम्पत और एच एस ब्रह्‌मा ने उन चार जिलों में चुनाव तैयारियों की समीक्षा की जहां पहले चार चरणों में मतदान होगा। एक रिपोर्ट

निर्वाचन आयोग ने राज्य के अधिकारियों से कहा है कि मतदाता पहचान पत्र और मतदाता सेट को तैयार करने और उनके वितरण की प्रभावी व्यवस्था की जानी चाहिए। आयोग ने कहा है कि शांतिपूर्ण और निष्पक्ष चुनाव कराने के लिए पर्याप्त संख्या में केंद्रीय बल उपलब्ध कराए जाएंगे।  उधर राज्य के अधिकांश राजनीतिक दलों ने कई प्रमुख अधिकारियों विशेषकर मंत्रिमंडलीय सचिव शशांक शेखर सिंह, प्रमुख सचिव गृह फतेहबहादुर और पुलिस  महानिदेश बृजलाल को तत्काल हटाने की मांग की है। सुनील शुक्ल, आकाशवाणी समाचार, लखनऊ।
पांचवे, छठे और सातवें चरण के मतदान वाले बाकी ३६ जिलों के अधिकारियों की बैठक आज होगी। इसके बाद आयोग की टीम राज्य के मुख्य सचिव, प्रधान गृह सचिव और पुलिस महानिदेशक के साथ विचार-विमर्श करेगी।
इस बीच निर्वाचन आयोग ने आदर्श आचार संहिता के उल्लंघन के विभिन्न मामलों में साठ प्रथम सूचना रिपोर्ट दर्ज कराई हैं। इसके अलावा ढाई लाख से अधिक उन मामलों में कार्रवाई की है, जहां दिशानिर्देशों का उल्लंघन किया गया। चुनाव घोषित किए जाने के बाद से अब तक राज्य के कई जिलों के विभिन्न स्थानों से करीब छह करोड़ पचास लाख रुपए की नक़दी जब्त की गई है।

उत्तर प्रदेश में भारतीय जनता पार्टी ने विधानसभा चुनाव के लिए ४६ उम्मीदवारों की चौथी सूची जारी कर दी है। पार्टी विभिन्न चुनाव क्षेत्रों के लिए ३०१ उम्मीदवारों की घोषणा पहले ही कर चुकी है। चौथी सूची में पार्टी ने लखनऊ से अपने सभी मौजूदा विधायकों को फिर उम्मीदवार बनाया है।

वित्त मंत्री प्रणब मुखर्जी ने चेन्नई में केन्द्रीय उत्पाद और सीमा शुल्क बोर्ड और केन्द्रीय प्रत्यक्ष कर बोर्ड के शीर्ष अधिकारियों के साथ बैठक में वर्ष २०११-१२ में राजस्व वसूली बढ़ाने के तरीकों पर चर्चा की।
बैठक में मौजूदा वित्त वर्ष के बाकी बचे हुए समय में करों की वसूली बढ़ाने के उपायों पर चर्चा हुई। श्री मुखर्जी ने सुझाव दिया कि अधिकारियों को विभिन्न अपीलीय संस्थाओं में चल रहे विवादों को निपटाने और बकाया करों की वसूली पर खास ध्यान देना चाहिये।

सरकार ने कहा है कि एक ही ब्रांड वाले खुदरा कारोबार में शत प्रतिशत प्रत्यक्ष विदेशी निवेश के लिए जल्द अधिसूचना जारी की जायेगी। औद्योगिक नीति और संवर्धन विभाग के सचिव पी. के. चौधरी ने कल यह जानकारी दी। खुदरा कारोबार में प्रत्यक्ष विदेशी निवेश बढ़ाने के बारे में पिछले साल २४ नवम्बर को केन्द्रीय मंत्रिमंडल की बैठक में फैसला लिया गया था। इस समय एक ही ब्रांड के खुदरा व्यापार में ५१ प्रतिशत प्रत्यक्ष विदेशी निवेश की अनुमति है।

सीरिया की राजधानी दमिश्क में हुए आत्मघाती बम विस्फोट में मरने वालों की संख्या बढ़कर २६ हो गई है। हमले में ६३ लोग घायल भी हुए हैं। सीरिया के गृहमंत्री इब्राहीम अल-शार ने बताया कि जिम्मेदार आतंकवादियों खिलाफ कड़ी कार्रवाई की जायेगी। एक आत्मघाती हमलावर ने दमिश्क के मैदान जिले में घनी आबादी वाले इलाके में एक ट्रैफिक लाइट के पास खुद को विस्फोट से उड़ा दिया था। अभी तक किसी ने भी विस्फोट की जिम्मेदारी नहीं ली है। लगभग दो सप्ताह पहले भी दमिश्क में एक आत्मघाती बम हमले में ४४ लोग मारे गए थे।

नाइजीरिया में अज्ञात हमलावरों ने कम से कम बीस लोगों की गोली मार कर हत्या कर दी। हमले कैमरून की सीमा से लगे अदामावा प्रांत के मूबी जिले मे तीन अलग अलग जगहो पर किये गये। कट्टरपंथी इस्लामिक संगठन बोको हराम ने हमले की जिम्मेदारी ली है।

बिहार में गया जिले में सुरक्षा बलो ने माओवादियों के खिलाफ कार्रवाई के दौरान भारी मात्रा में हथियार, गोलीबारूद, विस्फोटक उपकरण, वायरलेस सेट, माओवादी साहित्य और पांच लाख रुपये की नकदी बरामद की। विस्फोटकों की सप्लाई करने वाले सरगना दीपक कुमार और उसके एक सहयोगी को भी गिरतार किया गया। इन दोनों माओवादियों की हिंसा के २५ से अधिक मामलों में तलाश थी। इस बीच, बिहार सरकार ने आपराधिक गतिविधियों में बढ़ोतरी के बाद राज्य में सक्रिय समाजविरोधी तत्वों के खिलाफ राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा कानून लगाने का निर्णय लिया है।

मणिपुर में पुलिस ने कल दस आतंकवादियों को गिरतार किया। इनमें उन सात प्रतिबंधित आतंकवादी संगठनों के समन्वय समिति की एक महिला भी शामिल है, जिन्होंने कांग्रेस पार्टी के खिलाफ प्रतिबंध लागू कर रखा है। पूर्वी इम्फाल में इरिलबंग थाने के किराओं, बित्रा और संद्रोक में चलाये गए तलाशी अभियान के बाद ये गिरतारियां हो सकीं। आतंकवादियों से हथियार और भारी मात्रा में गोलाबारूद बरामद किया गया।

जम्मू-कश्मीर में अधिकारियों ने बर्फबारी के बाद पर्वतीय  इलाकों में मध्यम श्रेणी की बर्फीली चट्टाने गिरने की चेतावनी जारी की है। कल श्रीनगर में बर्फ और बर्फीली चट्टान अध्ययन केन्द्र से मिली सूचना के आधार पर संभागीय आपदा प्रबंधन प्रकोष्ठ के समन्वय अधिकारी ने आज शाम पांच बजे तक के लिए यह चेतावनी जारी की। यह चेतावनी बारामुला जिले के खिलनमर्ग, गुलमर्ग और उड़ी, कुपवाड़ा जिले के चौकीबल और तंगधार और बांदीपुरा जिले के गुरेज+ क्षेत्रों के लिए जारी की गई।  लोगों को सलाह दी गई है कि वे खतरे वाले इन क्षेत्रों में न जाएं।
हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि घाटी में नववर्ष की इस पहली बर्फबारी से कृषि और पर्यटन दोनों पर अच्छा प्रभाव पड़ने की आशा है।

About 1500 NRIs from 54 countries have already reached Jaipur to attend the 3-day event. Trinidad and Tobago has supported India's candidature for a permanent seat in an expanded UN Security Council. This was disclosed in a joint statement issued after delegation level talks between the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and his Trinidad counterpart Mrs. Kamla Persad Bissessar in New Delhi yesterday. The statement said, the two leaders discussed a host of global issues, including terrorism, climate change and UN reforms. Intensifying energy collaboration also figured prominently in the discussions. An Indian delegation led by Petroleum Minister S. Jaipal Reddy will visit Trinidad and Tobago later this year to identify the areas of cooperation. Rich in oil and gas resources, Trinidad and Tobago is the largest and most vibrant economy in the Caribbean.
India and Trinidad and Tobago also signed five agreements to enhance their economic and cultural ties. The Air services pact is of vital importance apart from MoU in technical cooperation in the education and the health sector.
The
Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister, who reached New Delhi on a ten day visit to India, will be the chief guest at the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas function.

The Election Commission has asked the poll related officials of Uttar Pradesh to ensure proper security during Assembly elections in areas bordering Nepal. The Commission also asked them to strictly implement the model code of conduct. The Full Election Commission yesterday reviewed poll preparations for the first four phases of Assembly elections in the state. Our correspondent has filed this report:
The Election Commission has said the officials that effective measures must be taken for distribution of Electorate Photo Identity Cards and voters slip to the electorates. While reviewing the poll preparedness at the Chief Election Commissioner Dr. SY Quraishi and Election Commissioners V S Sampat and H S Braham said that credibility of the state administration is on the stake as most of the political parties have lodged their complaints about partial activities of officials particularly police. They assured the officials that adequate security forces would be available for free and fair elections. In Bihar, a huge cache of ammunition, explosive devices and wireless sets along with Maoist literature and cash worth five lakh rupees were recovered at Gaya district yesterday. The Kingpin of explosive suppliers Deepak Kumar and his associate were also arrest in an operation. These two Maoists were wanted in over 25 cases of violence.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee held discussions on ways to step up revenue collection for 2011-12 with top officials of Central Board of Excise and Customs - CBEC and the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in Chennai. An official release said the meeting discussed steps for augmentation of revenue for the remaining part of the financial year. In his address, Mr. Mukherjee suggested that the officials focus on litigations in various appellate forums and on collection of arrears to maximise revenue collection.

The government has said it was planning to lower the age bar from 40 to 18 for widows entitled to central pension scheme. Delivering a keynote address on "Agrarian Single Women-Distress, Access to Livelihood" Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said, his Ministry has proposed to the Finance Ministry to enhance the pension amount from existing 200 to 500 rupees for the old age people, differently abled as well as for widows. At present BPL widow in the age group of 40 to 59 are eligible for pension.

In Jammu and Kashmir, authorities have issued a medium avalanche warning in regions close to mountainous areas of the Kashmir Valley following moderate to heavy snowfall. An official spokesman said in Srinagar that the avalanche warning has been issued in snow-bound hilly areas of Khilanmarg, Gulmarg, Uri in Baramulla district, Chowkibal, Tangdhar in Kupwara district and Gurez in Bandipora district. People living in these areas have been advised not to venture in the steep avalanche prone slopes during the next 24 hours. The Kashmir valley including Srinagar is experiencing snowfall. Two feet snow is accumulated on either side of Jaahar Tunnel On Jammu and Srinagar highway resulting in closure of highway for the second consecutive day. All the higher riches including Gulmarg, Gurez and Pahelgam have received heavy snowfall. An avalanche morning has been issued for people in living near higher riches. Even though road closure and power disruption have caused some difficulties to the people, the snow is considered good for agriculture and horticulture and people related to tourist trade are also upbeat. In Himachal Pradesh, Shimla and Manali experienced snowfall yesterday. Shimla recorded the coldest night of the season yesterday. Our correspondent has filed this report:
Shimla and Manali both the towns are covered with thick blanket of snow creating a fairy land view. Tourists are already here in large no as shimla and Manali had snowfall for the second consecutive day. Meanwhile traffic has been disrupted on many roads including Hindustan - Tibet national highway due to heavy snowfall at Narkanda. There is no electricity in various parts of town since yesterday evening. The bi-annual Delhi Auto Expo 2012 is bigger than all previous shows with 50 vehicles including 32 cars, ready to unveil their unique features before general public today. Petrol prices in India have risen by almost 50 percent since January 2010 and car makers in Asia's third-largest economy have invested in more efficient vehicles. Many car advertisements around the Expo highlight fuel savings. Incidentally CNG was made the mandatory fuel for all public transport vehicles including taxis in India's capital city in 2004. It was the second such suicide bomb blast in the Capital Damascus in two weeks time. Syrian Interior Minister Ibrahim al-Shaar told it was a suicide bomber who blew himself up near a traffic signala in Maidan district in the capital Damascus. The Asian Age, however, adds that there could have been 'procedural glitches' on the part of the Armed Forces not taking mandatory approval from the Finance Ministry.
The turf war between the Home Ministry and the Planning Commission over expansion of the Nandan Nilekani-led UID project, is covered by the Hindustan Times. The paper writes that the Planning Commission has rejected the Home Ministry proposal to issue Smart Identity - saying that chip based ID cards were a waste of Public money. The Home Ministry could ask the cabinet to mediate.
The Indian Express reports that the government has completed the 5,846 kilometre Golden Quadrilateral Highway Project - which connects Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkatta. The initiative , which started in the year 2000, is part of the first phase of the Government's National Highways Development project.

पूर्व केन्द्रीय मंत्री सुखराम ने आज दिल्ली की पटियाला हाउस अदालत में समर्पण कर दिया और अदालत ने उन्हें १९९३ के दूरसंचार घोटाले के सिलसिले में अपनी तीन साल की सजा भुगतने के लिए एम्बुलेंस में जेल भेज दिया। ८६ वर्षीय सुखराम एम्बुलेंस में पटियाला हाउस पहुंचे और अदालत में पेश हुए। इससे पहले अदालत ने कहा था कि अगर सुखराम ने समर्पण न किया तो गैर-ज+मानती वारंट जारी किये जायेंगे। सी बी आई के विशेष जज संजीव जैन ने कहा कि सुखराम को इसी एम्बुलेंस में जेल ले जाया जाये और जेल अधिकारी उन्हें नियमों के अनुसार आवश्यक चिकित्सा सहायता प्रदान करें। सुखराम, नरसिम्हा राव सरकार में जनवरी १९९३ से मई १९९६ तक संचार मंत्री रहे और उन्होंने पूर्व प्रशासनिक अधिकारी रूनु घोष और हैदराबाद के उद्यमी पी० रामाराव के साथ सांठगांठ करके दूरसंचार घोटाला किया। रूनु घोष और पी० रामाराव ने निचली अदालत में सपर्मण कर दिया और उन्हें अपनी अपनी सजा भुगतने के लिए जेल भेज दिया गया। कैद की सजा के अलावा दोषियों पर दो-दो लाख रूपये का जुर्माना भी किया गया है।

दिल्ली में सी बी आई के विशेष जज ओ० पी० सैनी ने टू-जी स्पेक्ट्रम मामले में केन्द्रीय गृहमंत्री पी० चिदम्बरम पर मुकदमा चलाने की जनता पार्टी के अध्यक्ष सुब्रहमण्यम स्वामी की अर्जी पर दलीलों के लिए २१ जनवरी की तारीख तय की है। श्री स्वामी ने अदालत के सामने अपना बयान दर्ज कराने का काम पूरा कर लिया है। श्री स्वामी ने अदालत में कई दस्तावेज पेश किये हैं। इनमें श्री चिदम्बरम द्वारा १५ जनवरी २००८ को प्रधानमंत्री डॉक्टर मनमोहन सिंह को लिखा पत्र भी शामिल है। श्री स्वामी ने ए० राजा के दूरसंचार मंत्री के कार्यकाल के दौरान श्री चिदम्बरम, प्रधानमंत्री तथा राजा के बीच हुई बैठक की कार्यवाही के ब्यौरे की सत्यापित प्रति भी अदालत में पेश की है।

दिल्ली की एक अदालत ने पूर्व भारतीय राजनयिक माधुरी गुप्ता के खिलाफ पाकिस्तान की खुफिया एजेंसी आई एस आई को कथित रूप से संवदेनशील सूचनाएं देने के मामले में आरोप तय किए हैं। अतिरिक्त सत्र न्यायाधीश पवन कुमार जैन ने सरकारी गोपनीयता कानून और आईपीसी के प्रावधानों के तहत आपराधिक साजिश रचने के आरोप तय किए। मामले की अगली सुनवाई २२ मार्च को होगी।

केन्द्र ने सामाजिक, आर्थिक और जाति आधारित जनगणना शुरू करने में ढिलाई बरते जाने पर सात राज्यों से अपनी नाराज+गी जाहिर की है। ग्रामीण विकास मंत्री जयराम रमेश ने इस बारे में केरल, दिल्ली, असम, पश्चिम बंगाल, गुजरात, मध्यप्रदेश और तमिलनाडु के मुख्यमंत्रियों को अलग-अलग पत्र लिखे हैं। अपने पत्र में श्री रमेश ने इन राज्यों से जनगणना प्रक्रिया में तेजी लाने को कहा है। उन्होंने मुख्यमंत्रियों से आग्रह किया है कि वे समूची प्रक्रिया को समय पर पूरा करने के लिए आवश्यक दिशा-निर्देश जारी करें।

सरकार, पूर्वोत्तर राज्यों में लघु, अतिलधु और मझौले उद्यमों को बढ़ावा देने के लिए सभी उपाय कर रही है। योजना आयोग के उपाध्यक्ष मोंटेक सिंह अहलुवालिया ने बताया कि इस सिलसिले में इससे जुड़े सभी पक्षों की एक बैठक बुलाई जा रही है। गृहमंत्री पी चिदम्बरम ने कल कहा था कि पूर्वोत्तर क्षेत्र के अधिकतर हिस्से अब हिंसामुक्त हैं और लगभग सभी अलगाववादी गुट सरकार के साथ बातचीत कर रहे हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि मेघालय, मिजोरम, सिक्किम, अरूणाचलप्रदेश और असम के अधिकतर भाग हिंसा रहित हैं।

असम में सभी २७ जिलों की नई मतदाता सूची जारी की गयी है। पिछले वर्ष अक्तूबर में जारी मतदाता मसौदा सूची की तुलना में नई सूची में दो दशमलव दो-एक प्रतिशत मतदाता बढ़े हैं। यह सूची पहली जनवरी २०१२ से प्रभावी हो गई है।

ऊपरी असम के धेमाजी जिले में एक पुल के ढह जाने से कम से कम साठ मजदूर घायल हो गए, इनमें कुछ महिलाएं भी शामिल हैं। सत्रह घायलों की हालत गंभीर है।

आधिकारिक सूत्रों ने बताया कि निर्माण स्थल बोगीबील सड़क और रेल पुल का एक हिस्सा उस समय ढह गया जब वहां से एक भारी वाहन गुजर रहा था। ये मजदूर उस समय वहां काम कर रहे थे।

जम्मू कश्मीर में बारामूला जिले के सोपोर शहर के एक पुलिस चौकी पर आतंकी हमले में दो पुलिसकर्मीं और तीन नागरिक घायल हो गये। पुलिस ने बताया है कि हमले के बाद सुरक्षाबलों ने तलाशी अभियान शुरू किया, जिसमें एक आतंकवादी मारा गया। आतंकवादियों ने दिन में लगभग साढ़े ११ बजे थाने पर पहले गे्रनेड से हमला किया और बाद में गोलियां चलाईं। सुरक्षाबलों ने इलाके को घेर लिया है और तलाशी अभियान शुरू कर दिया है। संदेह है कि एक अन्य आतंकवादी इस इलाके में छिपा हुआ है।

उत्तर भारत में वर्षा, बर्फबारी और कोहरे के कारण सामान्य जनजीवन बुरी तरह प्रभावित हुआ है।
उत्तरप्रदेश में दो दिन की राहत के बाद ठंडी हवाएं चलने से सर्दी फिर बढ़ गई है। सुबह और शाम घने कोहरे के कारण रेल, सड़क और विमान सेवाएं बाधित हुई हैं। कुछ पश्चिमी जिलों में आठवीं तक की कक्षाएं बृहस्पतिवार तक बंद रहेंगी।

जम्मू-कश्मीर में इस मौसम की पहली भारी बर्फबारी के बाद तीन सौ किलोमीटर लंबा श्रीनगर-जम्मू राजमार्ग यातायात के लिए बंद कर दिया गया है।जवाहर सुरंग के दोनों ओर लगभग दो दो फीट बर्फ जमी है, जिसके कारण राजमार्ग लगातार दूसरे दिन बंद है।
ऊॅंची पहाड़ियों के नजदीक हिम-स्खलन की चेतावनी दी गई है। श्रीनगर और इसके आसपास के इलाके बर्फ से ढक गये हैं।

तमिलनाडु में समुद्री तूफान थाने से हुई तबाही का जायजा लेने के लिए श्री लोकेश झा के नेतृत्व में छह सदस्यों वाला अन्तर मंत्रालय दल आज चेन्नई पहुंचा। हवाई अड्डे पर संवाददाताओं से बातचीत में श्री झा ने बताया कि दल आज राज्य सरकार के अधिकारियों के साथ बातचीत करेगा। आशा है कि दल कल तूफान पीड़ित इलाकों का दौरा करेगा।

असम के मुख्यमंत्री तरूण गोगोई ने राज्य के परम्परागत बैल मैटल और पटाखा उद्योग के लिए विशेष पैकेज की घोषणा की है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि कच्चे माल और बुनियादी सुविधाओं की कमी से जूझ रहे इन दोनों उद्योगों ने इस घोषणा का स्वागत किया है।

गुजरात के कच्छ जिले में एक गैर-सरकारी संगठन ने आज से पशुओं के लिए नेत्र चिकित्सा शिविर आयोजित किया है। अपनी तरह का यह शिविर अहिंसा धाम के पास मुन्दड़ा कस्बे में लगाया गया है, जिसमें पशुओं की कमजोर दृष्टि, मोतियाबिन्द और आंख संबंधी अन्य रोगों का इलाज किया जा रहा है।

संयुक्त राष्ट्र मानवाधिकार संगठन की प्रमुख नवी पिल्ले ने यमन को चेतावनी दी है कि राष्ट्रपति अली अब्दुल्ला सालेह के गद्दी छोड़ने के लिए हुए समझौते के तहत युद्व अपराधियों को माफी नहीं दी जाए। यमन की संसद में जल्द ही माफी विधेयक पेश होने वाला है। सुश्री पिल्ले ने कहा कि अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अपराध करने वालों को माफी की आड़ में मुकदमे से बचने नहीं दिया जाना चाहिए।

पाकिस्तान ने नववर्ष के अवसर पर सद्भावना के तौर पर कराची की लांधी जेल से एक नागरिक और १७९ भारतीय मछुआरों को रिहा कर दिया है। सूत्रों ने बताया है कि मछुआरे अब लाहौर पहुंचेंगे और वहां से उन्हें वाघा सीमा ले जाया जाएगा, जहां उन्हें कल भारतीय अधिकारियों को सौंपा जाएगा। पाकिस्तानी जेलों में अभी भी २७६ मछुआरे बंद हैं और ४८० से अधिक नौका उसके कब्जे में हैं।

अमरीकी नौसेना ने कहा है कि उसने अरब सागर में समुद्री लुटेरों द्वारा बंधक बनाये गये १३ ईरानी मछुआरों को छुड़ा लिया है। नौसेना ने बताया कि उसके गश्ती दल ने १५ संदिग्ध लुटेरों को भी गिरफ्‌तार किया है। मछुआरों को कई ह्‌फ्‌तों से बंधक बनाकर रखा गया था।

Former Union Minister Sukh Ram surrendered before a
local court in Delhi today which sent him to jail to serve his three-year sentence in a telecom scam case in 1993. Eighty six year old Sukh Ram, appeared before the court after coming in an ambulance in pursuance of its order earlier in the day that it would issue non-bailable warrants if he fails to surrender today. Special CBI Judge Sanjiv Jain said Sukh Ram would be taken to jail in the same ambulance and the prison authorities would provide him necessary medical aid as per the norms.
Sukh Ram, Telecom minister between January 18, 1993 and May 16, 1996, in the Narasimha Rao government, had conspired with former bureaucrat Runu Ghosh and Hyderabad-based businessman P Rama Rao and approved the ARM Ltd's bid despite its rates being higher than other bidders. Runu Ghosh and Rama Rao have surrendered before the trial court and were sent to jail to serve their sentence of two and three years respectively. Besides the jail term, the convicts were also asked to pay a fine of 2 lakh rupees each.

A Delhi court today listed the application of Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy, seeking prosecution of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G case, for arguments on January 21. Special CBI Judge O P Saini listed Swamy's application for arguments after the Janata Party chief completed his recording of statement before the court.
Swamy filed various documents in the court, including a January 15, 2008 letter written by Chidambaram to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Swamy also placed on record the certified copy of the minutes of a meeting between Chidambaram, Raja and the Prime Minister during the tenure of Raja as the Minister of Communication and Information Technology.

The Centre has conveyed displeasure to seven states for their reluctance to commence the Socio-Economic and Caste census (SECS). Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh has written separate letters to the Chief Ministers of Kerala, Delhi, Assam, West Bengal, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in this regard. In his letter, Mr. Ramesh has asked the states to accelerate the SECS enumeration process. He also urged the Chief Ministers to issue all the necessary guidelines to complete the entire process on time.
The Ministry of Rural development is making these efforts to speed up the identification of Priority House Holds for the National Food Security Bill. The Bill has already been tabled in Parliament by Food and Public Distribution Minister K V Thomas in the winter session.

The Government today said that it is making all efforts to boost micro and medium entreprises in the North Eastern states. Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia is convening a meeting with the stakeholders in this regard. Home Minister P Chidambaram yesterday said that most of the north east region is conflict free and nearly all separatist groups in the region are in talks with the government. He said that Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Arunanchal Pradesh and most parts of Assam are conflict free.

Even as legal tussle is continuing between Kerala and Tamil Nadu on Mullappeiyar dam issue, Kerala Chief Minister urged the people of Tamil Nadu to respond to the safety concerns of the States. In a very friendly interaction with editors from Tamil Nadu, Oommen Chandy reiterated that the present quantity of water will be ensured to Tamil Nadu if a new dam is built in Mullapperiyar . Kerala is prepared to shoulder the entire cost of the new dam. In Assam, the final electoral roll published for all the 27 districts of the State shows a 2.21 per cent increase in the number of voters in comparison to the draft electoral roll published in October last year. According to the final electoral roll, the total number of voters in Assam is one crore eighty five lakh sixty two thousand one hundred and forty five. The final electoral roll, based on first January, 2012 as the qualifying date, was published on Thursday last after special revision as per the directive of the Election Commission.

United Nations has condemned the blast in the Syrian capital Damascus. In a statement, Secretary General Ban Ki Moon said all violence is unacceptable and must stop. The UN Security Council in a press statement called the attack a heinous act and expressed condolences to the victims. The Syrian Government has blamed the attack on terrorists and said it will deal sternly with those behind the attacks. However the Syrian Opposition held the ruling regime responsible for the Friday bombing in the capital. The Syrian Muslim Brotherhood has called for investigation by Arab and UN agencies. A suicide bomber blew himself up at a traffic intersection, near an elementary school in Maidan in the capital Damascus on Friday. 26 people were killed and over 59 were injured in the explosion. Pakistan has freed 179 Indian fishermen and one civilian from Karachi’s Landhi Jail as a goodwill gesture on the new year. Sources said the freed fishermen will reach Lahore from where they will be handed over to Indian authorities at the Wagha Border tomorrow. There are still 276 fishermen held in Pakistani jails and more than 480 boats remain in Pak custody.

In Egypt, the official results of the third and the final round of voting for the lower house of the parliament, the Peoples Assembly will be declared today. However, it will take longer to know the exact composition of the 498-member parliament. The Run offs for the individual list will be held on 10th and 11th January.
Voting will be held again in a district where the election was cancelled due to irregularities in the first round. Early results showed the Muslim Brotherhood winning more than one third of the votes , which indicates the Islamists are set to dominate the legislature. Banned by the former regime, the Brotherhood has emerged a major winner from the uprising.
It is followed by the hardline Islamist Al Nour Party. The liberals Al Wafd and Egyptian Bloc came way behind the two Islamist parties. According to a complex electoral system, one third seats are reserved for an individual list while the remaining two third seats come from the party list.

United Nations Human Rights Chief, Navi Pillay, has warned Yemen not to grant amnesty to those who have committed war crimes as part of a deal with President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down. An Amnesty Law is due to go to parliament in Yemen shortly. Ms Pillai said, amnesty must not be allowed to prevent the prosecution of individuals who have committed international crimes.
Earlier, tens of thousands of Yemenis held renewed street protests demanding that President Saleh honour his agreement to step down next month.

The African National Congress (ANC) is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Forty-six heads of state, party luminaries past and present, and a fading group of struggle icons will be in attendance to commemorate the party's centenary.
Nelson Mandela, the symbol of the party and its success, is not likely to make an appearance. Africa's oldest liberation movement successfully brought an end to the Apartheid which once saw South Africa legally divided on the basis of race. Jamaica's new Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, has said she intends to make the island a republic, removing Queen Elizabeth as the head of state. In Assam, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi recently announced special package for the modernisation of traditional bell metal and fireworks industry. The announcement has been welcomed as both the industries are facing difficulties due to shortage of raw materials and lack of necessary infrastructure. AIR Correspondent has filed this report:
Barpeta district in Lower Assam is known to be the traditional hub of the age old industry. Both the industries have able to maintain their traditional dignity in spite of stiff challenges. Bell metal industry at Sarthebari area in the district started during the time of Kumar Bhaskar Barman of 7th century. Brass metal utensils are indispensable part of the Assamese culture and religious institutions. More than two thousand people are directly involved with this industry. Apart from other states of the country, the market is also expanded to Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka . The artists produced bell metal in a composition of 22 per cent of tin and 78 per cent of copper which maintains its high quality. On the other hand, fireworks in Barpeta were in prevalent before the British came to our country. The fireworks that are being made in Barpeta are also known to have pollution free in comparison to other fireworks. More than 500 people are directly involved with this indigenous industry with an annual turnover of 50 lakh rupees. People here expressed that after the declaration made by the Chief Minister, artisans associated with both the industries, will be benefited. At least 60 labourers, including some women, were injured when a concrete bridge collapsed in Upper Assam's Dhemaji district. Condition of 17 of them is stated to be serious. Official sources said, the mishap occurred yesterday when a heavy vehicle was trying to cross the bridge between the construction site of Bogibeel road-cum-rail bridge and Silapathar.
The labourers were carrying on repair work at the site of the accident. Most of them have been shifted to Silapathar public health centre while those seriously hurt are being treated at the Dhemaji civil hospital.

Rain, snow and fog have disrupted normal life in North India.
In Jammu and Kashmir, 300 kilometre long Srinagar-Jammu high way has been closed for traffic following first major snowfall of the season. Nearly two feet snow is accumulated on either side of Jaahar Tunnel resulting in closure of highway for the second consecutive day. All the higher riches including Gulmarg, Gurez and Pahelgam have received heavy snowfall.
An avalanche warning is issued for people living near higher riches. Srinagar and adjoining areas are also snow clayed and tourists and locals are cherishing snow scene. Snowfall and rain has brightened prospects of both agriculture and tourism sector.
In the National capital Delhi, overnight rain brought chill to this morning but the minimum temperature remained at above normal levels. The minimum temperature was recorded at 12.5 degree Celsius, five degrees above normal.
Normal life has been disrupted in hill areas following the snowfall and rain in Uttarakhand. Many roads have been blocked in the higher reaches due to snowfall. The cold weather has also affected the electioneering in the state.
In Uttar Pradesh, chilly wind has brought down day’s temperature again after a brief respite of two days. Thick fog during mornings and evenings has disrupted rail, road and air traffic. Scattered rain lashed some eastern and western districts. Day temperature is hovering between 14 to 16 degrees Celsius. Schools up to eight standard are closed till Thursday in some western districts.

A Delhi court today framed charges against former Indian diplomat Madhuri Gupta for allegedly passing on sensitive information to Pakistan's ISI. Additional Sessions Judge Pawan Kumar Jain charged Gupta under the Official Secrets Act for spying and also under the Indian Penal Code for criminal conspiracy. The court fixed March 22 for starting the trial.

निर्वाचन आयोग ने  उत्तर प्रदेश में चुनाव के दौरान समूचे राज्य में बहुजन समाज पार्टी की प्रमुख मुख्यमंत्री मायावती और उनकी पार्टी के चुनाव चिन्ह हाथी की सभी मूर्तियों को ढकने के आदेश दिए हैं। मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त एस वाई कुरेशी ने लखनऊ में संवाददाताओं को बताया कि आयोग ने विधानसभा चुनाव में सभी राजनीतिक दलों को एकसमान अवसर प्रदान करने के लिए यह फैसला किया है।

ये निर्णय है उन मूर्तियों को ढका जायेगा। हाथियों को भी हाथी के उनके पार्टी का सिम्बल भी है। इसलिए उसमें कंफियोजियन तो होता है।
राज्य के केबिनेट सचिव शशांक शेखर सिंह, प्रधान गृह सचिव फतेह बहादुर और पुलिस महानिदेशक बृजलाल को हटाने की राजनीतिक दलों की मांग के बारे में पूछे जाने पर मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त ने कहा कि सभी तथ्यों पर विचार के बाद इस पर फैसला किया जाएगा। उन्होंने बताया कि एक स्थान पर तीन साल से अधिक समय से नियुक्त अधिकारियों को हटाने के बारे में निर्देश जारी किए जा चुके हैं।
डाक्टर कुरेशी ने बताया कि राजनीतिक दलों के साथ बैठक के दौरान उन्होंने अधिकारियों के राजनीतिकरण जैसे कई मुद्दे उठाए। उन्होंने चुनाव में कालेधन के इस्तेमाल, धन के लेन-देन और शराब के वितरण जैसे मुद्दों पर चिंता व्यक्त की।

सभी पार्टियों ने अपनी एग्जाईटिव वरी दिखाई ब्लैक मनी और लिकर और केश डिस्ट्रीब्यूशन के बारे में लेकिन यह भी कहा कि जब हम चैक करेंगे गाड़ियों को या पैसों का जो लो तो यह ख्याल रखा जाए फेडर्स को जनता को हरासमेंट न हो।
 राजनीतिक दलों ने भाषणों के लिए धार्मिक स्थलों के इस्तेमाल पर भी चिंता व्यक्त की। बेहिसाब धन के बारे में मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त ने कहा कि राज्य में अब तक साढ़े सात करोड़ रुपये की ऐसी राशि जब्त की गई है।

हर एक केंटिटेट को अपना एक सेपिरेट बैंक एकाउंट खोलना होगा और फिर उसी से वह अपना इलेक्शन का खर्चा कर सकेगा। इसके परपज यह है कि अगर एक ही एकाउंट से खर्चा होगा तो उसको मॉनीटर करना आसान होगा।
 श्री कुरैशी ने बताया कि आयकर विभाग हवाई अड्डों, होटलों और हवाला कारोबारियों पर इस बारे में नजर रख रहा है। डाक्टर कुरेशी ने बताया कि सौ से अधिक व्यय पर्यवेक्षक और चार सौ उप-पर्यवेक्षक तैनात किए जा रहे हैं।

मणिपुर में नामाकंन पत्र भरने की प्रक्रिया शुरू होने के साथ ही चुनावी गतिविधियां तेज हो गई हैंं। राज्य के संयुक्त मुख्य चुनाव अधिकारी एन. प्रवीण ने आकाशवाणी को बताया कि विधानसभा चुनाव के लिए अब तक नौ नामाकंन पत्र भरे गये हैं।
इस बीच, राष्ट्रवादी कांग्रेस पार्टी ने आज १४ उम्मीदवारों की अपनी पहली सूची जारी की। नगा पीपुल्स फ्रंट ने भी आज १२ उम्मीदवारों की पहली सूची जारी की।

सी.बी.आई. ने उत्तरप्रदेश में राष्ट्रीय ग्रामीण स्वास्थ्य मिशन में दस हजार करोड़ रुपये के घोटाले के सिलसिले में राज्य के एक और पूर्व अधिकारी को गिरतार किया है। सरकार के सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र के उपक्रम के पूर्व अधिकारी जी.के. बत्रा को इस घोटाले में शामिल होने के आरोप में गिरतार किया गया है। सी.बी.आई. इस मामले में उत्तरप्रदेश लघु उद्योग निगम में पूर्व प्रबंध निदेशक अभय कुमार वाजपेयी, राज्य जलबोर्ड के पूर्व महाप्रबंधक पी.के. जैन, परिवार कल्याण विभाग के पूर्व महानिदेशक एस.पी. राम और व्यापारी सौरभ जैन को पहले ही गिरफ्‌तार कर चुकी है।

पूर्व केन्द्रीय मंत्री सुखराम ने आज दिल्ली की पटियाला हाउस अदालत में समर्पण कर दिया। अदालत ने उन्हें १९९३ के दूरसंचार घोटाले के सिलसिले में तीन साल की सजा भुगतने के लिए एम्बुलेंस से जेल भेज दिया।  ८६ वर्षीय सुखराम एम्बुलेंस में पटियाला हाउस पहुंचे और अदालत में पेश हुए। सी बी आई के विशेष जज संजीव जैन ने कहा कि सुखराम को इसी एम्बुलेंस में जेल ले जाया जाये और जेल अधिकारी उन्हें नियमों के अनुसार आवश्यक चिकित्सा सहायता प्रदान करें। इससे पहले इस मामले में दोषी  रूनु घोष और पी० रामाराव ने निचली अदालत में सपर्मण कर दिया और उन्हें अपनी-अपनी सजा भुगतने के लिए जेल भेज दिया गया।

पाकिस्तान ने जल सीमा का उल्लंघन करने के लिए गिरतार किए गए एक सौ उन्यासी भारतीय मछुआरों और एक अन्य व्यक्ति को रिहा कर दिया है। पाकिस्तान ने भारत के साथ संबंध सामान्य बनाने के उपायों के तहत इन्हें रिहा किया है। कराची में रिहा करने के बाद चार बसों में भारतीयों को लाहौर के निकट वाघा बॉर्डर ले जाया गया। इन लोगों को कल भारतीय अधिकारियों को सौंप दिया जाएगा। एक गैर-सरकारी संगठन के प्रमुख सेवानिवृत्त जस्टिस असलम नासिर ज+ाहिद ने कराची में संवाददाताओं से बातचीत में कहा कि इन भारतीयों की जेल से रिहाई एक सकारात्मक कदम है। उन्होंने बताया कि दो सौ छिहत्तर भारतीय मछुआरे अब भी कराची की जेलों में कैद हैं।

दसवां प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस सम्मेलन आज जयपुर में शुरू हुआ। त्रिनिदाद और टोबेगो की प्रधानमंत्री कमला प्रसाद बिसेसर तीन दिन के इस समारोह की मुख्य अतिथि हैं। इस बार के प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस की थीम है - वैश्विक भारतीय, समग्र विकास। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि मुख्य समारोह से पहले आज तीन विषयों पर संगोष्ठियां हुईं।

प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस समारोह की शुरूआत स्वास्थ्य और ऊर्जा में निवेश तथा अनुसंधान और भविष्य के लिए जल प्रबंधन विषयों पर संगोष्ठियों के आयोजन से हुई।  सौर ऊर्जा में निवेश विषय पर आयोजित गोष्ठी में बताया गया कि भारत विश्व के पांच देशों में से एक है जहां सौर ऊर्जा के सबसे ज्यादा संभावनाएं हैं और सरकार इस पर अधिक ध्यान केंद्रित कर रही है। संगोष्ठी में सौर ऊर्जा से मिलने वाली बिजली की दरें पर तर्क संगत बनाने पर भी विचार किया गया। इस दौरान राजस्थान में सौर ऊर्जा की संभावनाओं पर अलग से विचार-विमर्श किया गया। प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस के तहत राज्य सरकार की ओर से भी युवाओं के लिए भी आज के परि संवाद का आयोजन किया गया जिसमें सफल अनिवासी भारतीयों के साथ राज्य के युवा वर्ग संवाद स्थापित किया। अनुराग वाजपेयी, आकाशवाणी समाचार, जयपुर।

तृणमूल कांग्रेस प्रमुख और पश्चिम बंगाल की मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी ने राज्य में अपनी सहयोगी पार्टी कांग्रेस की आलोचना की है और कहा है कि वह गठबंधन छोड़ने के लिए स्वतंत्र है। कोलकाता में संवाददाताओं से बातचीत में उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि कांग्रेस मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी के साथ मिलकर उनकी सरकार को बदनाम करने की कोशिश कर रही है।
इस बीच कांग्रेस ने कहा है कि वह पश्चिम बंगाल में गठबंधन सरकार में तब तक बनी रहेगी जब तक राज्य की जनता चाहेगी। प्रदेश कांग्रेस के अध्यक्ष प्रदीप भट्टाचार्य ने कहा कि कांग्रेस लोगों की आकांक्षाएं पूरी करने के लिए सरकार में शामिल हुई है न कि किसी को संतुष्ट करने के लिए।

असम में दरांग जिले में पुनिया में आज एक सड़क दुर्घटना में एक पुलिसकर्मी सहित छह लोग मारे गए। पांच व्यक्तियों की घटना स्थल पर ही मृत्यु हो गई जबकि एक की अस्पताल जाते समय मृत्यु हो गई। यह दुर्घटना मारुति कार के यात्री बस से आमने-सामने टकरा जाने से हुई।  मारुति कार बारपेटा से डलगांव जा रही थी।

नई दिल्ली स्थित शास्त्री भवन की पहली और दूसरी मंजिल में आज सुबह आग लग गई। जिससे वहां रखे कुछ सामान के जलने की खबर है। अग्नि शमन विभाग के अनुसार सुबह ९ बजकर १० मिनट पर लगी आग को बुझाने के लिए दमकल की ८ गाड़ियों का प्रयोग किया गया और आग एक घंटे में बुझा दी गयी। घटना में किसी के घायल या हताहत होने का समाचार नहीं है। पुलिस आग के कारणों की जांच कर रही है।

उत्तर भारत में वर्षा, बर्फबारी और कोहरे के कारण सामान्य जनजीवन बुरी तरह प्रभावित हुआ है।
हिमाचल प्रदेश में आज तीसरे दिन भी मध्यम से भारी हिमपात जारी है। चम्बा, धर्मशाला, मनाली और शिमला में जनजीवन ठप्प हो गया है क्योंकि ये शहर बर्फ से ढक गये हैं। हमारी  संवाददाता के अनुसार पिछले चार दशकों में पहली बार धर्मशाला के पास के नगरों कांगड़ा, शाहपुर और नूरपुर तथा ऊना जिले के चिन्तपूर्णी क्षेत्र में भी बर्फ गिरी है।
उत्तराखण्ड में ऊॅंचाई वाले इलाकों में बर्फबारी और अन्य जगहों पर बारिश के कारण शीतलहर का प्रकोप बढ़ गया है।
उत्तरप्रदेश में दो दिन की राहत के बाद ठंडी हवाएं चलने से सर्दी फिर बढ़ गई है। सुबह और शाम घने कोहरे के कारण रेल, सड़क और विमान सेवाएं बाधित हुई हैं।
पंजाब और हरियाणा में भी बर्फीली हवाएं चल रही हैं। अमृतसर में काफी बारिश हुई और अधिकतम तापमान छह डिग्री से तेरह डिग्री सेल्सियस हो गया। लुधियाना में भी कड़ाके की ठंड पड़ रही है। चंडीगढ़ में भी दिन में बारिश होने से ठंड बढ़ गई।

The Election Commission has ordered to cover all statues of BSP Supremo and Chief Minister Mayawati erected in different parts of the poll bound Uttar Pradesh. Statues of elephants - her party's election Symbol should  also be covered from public view.  Talking to media persons this evening at Lucknow, Chief Election Commissioner Dr. Qureshi said, the Commission has taken this decision  to provide level playing field to all political  parties in the forthcoming Assembly  elections.  Replying a question about political parties' demand for removal of State Cabinet Secretary, Shashank Shekhar Singh, Principal Secretary- Home, Fateh Bahadur and DGP Brijlal, Dr. Qureshi said, a decision will be taken  after considering all facts. He said, there was a complaint and the election machinery should be neutral. Directives have already been issued to remove officials posted at one place for more than three years.  Mr. Qureshi said, during the meetings political parties raised several issues like politicisation of officers. There was anxiety and worry among political parties on matters relating to black money, movement of cash and liquor, which he said, would be closely monitored.
"Production storage and sale on liquor will be closely monitored . Borders will be sealed. We will have Very soon a meeting with the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and CEOs of the bordering states. Then every district media certification and media monitoring committee will be constituted to monitor all advertisements".
Political parties voiced concern over use of religious places for hate speeches. He said they also demanded use of Central forces instead of the state police. He said division-level officers were also told to maintain strict neutrality. On unaccounted cash, the Chief Election Commissioner said, 7.5 crore rupees unaccounted money had been seized in the state so far.  He said the Income Tax department has been deeply involved in checking movement of cash at airport, hotels and through hawala operators. For close watch, over 100 expenditure observers and 400 assistant observers, all from IT and revenue services, are being deployed. Besides, 400 general observers will also be deployed. 
"There is an advise to the public, they should not carry large cash during election process without valid documents, but there should be documents, kis purpose ke liye, kah se liya hai, aur kis purpose ke le jarahe hai."

CBI has arrested another former UP official in the ten thousand crore rupee National Rural Health Mission - scam.  The former official of Uttar Pradesh Government-owned public sector unit G.K Batra was arrested for his alleged involvement in the scam. The arrest of the former Managing Director of M/s Shreeton India follows a day-long intensive interrogation by agency sleuths. CBI has so far arrested five persons in the scam. They include former UP Small Industries Corporation Managing Director Abhay Kumar Bajpai, former UP Jal Board General Manager P K Jain, former Director General, Family Welfare, S P Ram and trader Saurabh Jain in the case. The agency sleuths had yesterday interrogated R R Bharti, former Director General (Family Welfare), Uttar Pradesh in the agency's Delhi office and two businessmen -- V Goyal and Neeraj Upadhyay -- in Lucknow.  They said, crucial evidence has emerged from its ongoing investigation in the multi-crore scam. The agency had earlier carried out inter-state searches at about 60 locations on Wednesday including at the residence of former Uttar Pradesh Minister Babu Singh Kushwaha to probe alleged irregularities.  CBI had registered five cases 5 days ago against
certain government and private sector officials, including one against Kushwaha, alleging loss of about 28 crore rupees  in implementing the Centrally-sponsored scheme meant for 72 districts of UP. NRHM funds to the tune of about 10,000 crore rupees were allocated to UP for the period 2005-06 till date by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.

Former Union Minister Sukh Ram surrendered before a local court in Delhi today which sent him to jail to serve his three-year sentence in a telecom scam case in 1993. Eighty six year old Sukh Ram appeared before the court after coming in an ambulance in pursuance of its order earlier in the day that it would issue non-bailable warrants if he fails to surrender today. Special CBI Judge Sanjiv Jain said, Sukh Ram would be taken to jail in the same ambulance and the prison authorities would provide him necessary medical aid as per the norms.

Pakistan has released 180 Indian nationals including 179 fishermen imprisoned for violating territorial waters. The prisoners were released in Karachi today as part of measures to normalise relations with India. They were later put on four buses to take them to Wagah border near Lahore. They  will be handed over to the Indian authorities tomorrow. Justice retired Aslam Nasir Zahid, who heads a non-governmental organisation told reporters in Karachi that the release of the prisoners is a very positive development and a goodwill gesture for the start of the New Year. He said there are still 276 Indian fishermen in jails in Karachi while in recent times the authorities had seized around 320 boats as well. Justice Zahid said his organisation is also making efforts to locate missing Pakistani fishermen and get back around 42 fishermen in Indian jails. Apart from the Indian Fishermen, India national Sama Yousuf, who was arrested by Pakistani authorities after straying into Pakistan, will also be back home tomorrow.

External Affairs Minister S M Krishna will pay a strategically important 3 day visit to Israel and Palestine from tomorrow. He will reach Tel Aviv tomorrow and stay there till Monday to mark the 20th year of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Krishna is expected to meet Israeli President Simon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu besides holding talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. Our correspondent reports that cooperation in defence, security, agriculture and science and technology are expected to figure prominently in the discussions amid India's keenness to widen the scope of partnership in the field of defence. Congress says, it will not quit from the Ministry in West Bengal despite Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stating that it is free to leave the alliance. West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee President Pradip Bhattacharya said in Kolkata that the party will remain in the government as long as the people desired. He said, the party is in the Ministry not to satisfy anyone's will. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, party spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, there is nothing abnormal in differences over certain issues between two alliance partners. He said that both Congress and Trinamool Congress should work together to sort them out. He said, there should be no communication between the two UPA allies.
"It do happen in coalition arrangement. I would request all concern not to react over aggressively or an a proactive atmosphere. Ultimately  all these things are eventually sorted out. There may be disagreements but disagreement are part of the game in a coalition".       
Criticising BJP for inducting former scam tainted UP Minister Babu Singh Kushwaha, Singhvi said that BJP is specialized in hypocrisy and double speak.  The BJP Spokesperson Nirmala Sitaraman alleged that the Congress party has completely failed in running a coalition government.
"Congress has proved completely a failure in running a coalition politics. We have Atal ji during NDA time running an alliance of 23 parties. There was no day of discord. The country had great stability, and now we see an alliance where every day one partner differs with others. Therefore the congress party should learnt to work in a coalition and has an open mind".

In Jammu and Kashmir, one person was killed in crossfire during a cordon and search operation. The operation was launched by security forces soon after militants attacked a police station today in Sopore town in Baramulla district. Two policemen and three civilians were injured. Militants hurled grenades at the police station and then opened fire around 11:30 am in an attempt to flee from the area.

Snow and rain today caused a dip in day temperatures with several parts of North India in the grip of cold wave. For the first time in over 40 years, towns in the sub-tropical zone of Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district had snowfall today.  It is snowing in Shimla, Manali, Chamba, Dalhousie and Kalpa.  Nurpur and Kangra, both in the Kangra district, saw a mild spell of snow today since the year 1961. Hindu shrine of Chintpurni in Una district saw snow for the first time in many years.The Rohtang pass received 150 cm of snow and Dhundhi recorded 120 cm.

गृहमंत्री पी चिदम्बरम ने कहा है कि पूर्वोत्तर क्षेत्र का अधिकतर इलाका अब हिंसा से मुक्त है तथा इस क्षेत्र के लगभग सभी अलगाववादी गुट सरकार से बातचीत कर रहे हैं। आज नई दिल्ली में सातवें पूर्वोत्तर व्यापार शिखर सम्मेलन में श्री चिदम्बरम ने कहा कि पूर्वोत्तर क्षेत्र में शांति केवल बातचीत के जरिये ही हासिल की जा सकती है।

अधिकतर आतंकवादी गुटों को समझ में आ गया है, कि हिंसा से कुछ हाासिल होने वाला नहीं है। सरकार, हिंसा बर्दाश्त नहीं करेंगी और किसी भी गुट को राज्य पर हावी नहीं होने देगी केवल बातचीत के माध्यम से ही समस्याओं का समाधान निकल सकता है।
गृहमंत्री ने कहा कि पिछले कुछ वर्षों में पूर्वोत्तर क्षेत्र में कई परिवर्तन हुए हैं और हिंसा केवल मणिपुर, असम के कुछ हिस्सों और नगालैंड तक ही सीमित रह गई है। उन्होने कहा कि मेघालय, मिजोरम, सिक्किम, अरूणाचल प्रदेश और असम के अधिकतर हिस्से हिंसा मुक्त हैं लेकिन इस क्षेत्र में जबरन वसूली अब भी चिंता का विषय बनी हुई है जिसे बंद करना होगा, क्योंकि यह उग्रवादी गुटों को धन पहुंचाने का स्रोत है। उन्होंने इससे निपटने के लिए राज्य सरकारों को सहायता की पेशकश की।

श्री चिदम्बरम ने कहा कि पिछले साल ऐसी घटनाओं में काफी कमी आई और इस साल स्थिति में और सुधार होने की आशा है। उन्होंने क्षेत्र में स्थायी शांति की आवश्यकता बताई ताकि यहां अधिक निवेश हो सकें।
सम्मेलन में लघु,अति लघु और मझोले उद्योग मंत्री वीरभद्र सिंह ने कहा कि पूर्वोत्तर क्षेत्र के सम्पूर्ण विकास के लिए इस क्षेत्र में उपलब्ध प्रचुर संसाधनों का इस्तेमाल करने की जरूरत है। उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार पूर्वोत्तर क्षेत्र में छोटे और मध्यम दर्जे के व्यवसायियों को समर्थन देने के लिए वहां काफी निवेश कर रही है।

वित्तमंत्री प्रणब मुखर्जी ने कहा है कि वर्ष २०११-१२ का राजकोषीय घाटा पहले के अनुमान से अधिक हो सकता है। आज चेन्नई में इंस्टीच्यूट ऑफ चार्टर्ड एकाउंटेंट्स ऑफ इंडिया के तीन दिवसीय अंतर्राष्ट्रीय सम्मेलन को सम्बोधित करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि यूरो जोन संकट और धीमी प्रगति ने भारत सहित विश्व के अन्य देशों को भी प्रभावित किया है। श्री मुखर्जी ने कहा कि अंतर्राष्ट्रीय आर्थिक संकट के कारण २००८-०९ में भारत का राजकोषीय घाटा, सकल घरेलू उत्पाद-जीडीपी, के साढ़े छह प्रतिशत तक पहुंच गया था, जिसे २००९-१० में कम करके साढ़े चार प्रतिशत पर लाया गया था। इस वर्ष के बजट में अनुमानित राजकोषीय घाटा जीडीपी का चार दशमलव छह प्रतिशत दिखाया गया है।
देश की आर्थिक स्थिति की चर्चा करते हुए वित्तमंत्री ने कहा कि इस वर्ष देश की सकल घरेलू उत्पाद दर सवा नौ प्रतिशत रहने की संभावना है।

प्रधानमंत्री डॉ० मनमोहन सिंह ने कहा है कि अगर दृढ़इच्छा और निश्चय तो सभी अस्थायी समस्याओं का समाधान हो सकता है। वे यूपीए के सहयोगियों के साथ कुछ समस्याओं के बारे में पूछे गये एक सवाल का जवाब दे रहे थे। डॉ० सिंह ने कहा कि ऊर्जा की बढ़ती मांग को पूरा करने के लिए ऊर्जा के क्षेत्र में सहयोग के अधिक प्रयास किए जा रहे हैं।

दसवां प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस कल से जयपुर में शुरू हो रहा है। प्रधानमंत्री डॉक्टर मनमोहन सिंह इसका आठ जनवरी को उद्घाटन करेंगे। प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस २०१२ का विषय होगा- वैश्विक भारतीय-समग्र विकास। तीन दिवसीय इस समारोह में भाग लेने के लिए ५४ देशों के डेढ़ हजार से अधिक प्रवासी भारतीय जयपुर पहुंच चुके हैं। त्रिनिदाद और टोबैगो की प्रधानमंत्री कमला प्रसाद बिसेसर मुख्य अतिथि होंगी। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा देवी सिंह पाटील नौ जनवरी को प्रवासी भारतीय सम्मान प्रदान करेंगी और समापन भाषण देंगी।

तीन दिन के इस समारोह के दौरान जल प्रबंधन, सौर-उर्जा, स्वास्थ्य, पर्यटन और ग्रामीण विकास जैसे विषयों पर संगोष्ठियों का आयोजन होगा। वित्त मंत्री श्री प्रणब मुखर्जी समारोह के औपचारिक उद्घाटन के बाद एक सत्र में समावेशी विकास- आर्थिक उदारीकरण के दो दशक विषय पर एक व्याख्यान देंगे। समारोह के आखिरी दिन राजस्थान, गोवा, गुजरात, मध्यप्रदेश, केरल और झारखंड के मुख्यमंत्री भी वैश्विक सन्दर्भ में भी राज्यों के नये प्रयास और अवसर विषय पर बातचीत करेंगे। प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस स्थानीय उद्यमशील लोगों के लिए अनिवासी भारतीयों के साथ संवाद का एक नायाब अवसर भी उपलबध कराता है।

उच्चतम न्यायालय ने आरूषि तलवार हत्याकांड में उसके पिता राजेश और मां नुपुर तलवार पर मुकदमा चलाने को मंजूरी दे दी है। न्यायालय ने तलवार दम्पत्ति की उनके खिलाफ आपराधिक कार्रवाई रद्द करने की याचिका खारिज कर दी। तलवार दत्पत्ति पर उनकी १३ वर्षीय पुत्री आरूषि की हत्या का मुकदमा चलाया जायेगा। आरूषि अपने अपार्टमेंट में मृत पाई गईं थी। तलवार दम्पत्ति ने उच्चतम न्यायालय से निचली अदालत के उस फैसले को निरस्त करने को कहा था जिसमे सीबीआई को उन्हें इस मामले में मुख्य अभियुक्त बनाने का निर्देश दिया गया था।

इलाहाबाद की एक अदालत ने टीम अन्ना के सदस्य शांति भूषण पर एक करोड़ पैंतीस लाख रुपये की स्टैम्प ड्यूटी न चुकाने के आरोप में २७ लाख रुपये का जुर्माना लगाया है। उन्हें एक महीने के अन्दर जुर्माने के अलावा बकाया राशि चुकानी होगी। समूची राशि न चुकाये जाने पर उनके खिलाफ आगे की कार्रवाई की जायेगी।
श्री शांतिभूषण, १९७० के दशक में नई दिल्ली जाने से पहले इसी जमीन पर बने बंगले में रहा करते थे।

सी बी आई ने गुजरात में २००४ के फर्जी मुठभेड़ में बंबई कालेज की छात्रा इशरत जहां और तीन अन्य की हत्या मामले की जांच आज औपचारिक रूप से अपने हाथ में ले ली । गुजरात उच्च न्यायालय के निर्देश के बाद ऐसा किया गया है। उच्च न्यायालय द्वारा नियुक्त विशेष जांच दल ने सी बी आई के आई जी वी वी लक्ष्मीनारायण और दूसरे अधिकारियों को अहमदाबाद में इस मामले से जुड़े दस्तावेज सौंपे।

हैदराबाद की विशेष सीबीआई अदालत ने निलंबित आई ए एस अधिकारी श्रीलक्ष्मी को १२ जनवरी तक न्यायिक हिरासत में भेज दिया है। इससे पहले उन्होंने अदालत में समर्पण किया था। सीबीआई ने उन पर कर्नाटक में अवैध खनन में शामिल होने का आरोप लगाया है। श्रीलक्ष्मी को चंचलगुड़ा केन्द्रीय जेल भेज दिया गया है।

राजस्थान में सीबीआई की विशेष अदालत ने भंवरी देवी मामले में पूर्व मंत्री महिपाल मदेरणा और एक अन्य आरोपी परसराम की न्यायिक हिरासत २८ जनवरी तक बढ़ा दी है।
इस बीच, जलोदा गांव में इस मामले से जुड़े कुछ और सबूत सीबीआई को मिले हैं। गोताखोरों के एक दल ने इंदिरा गांधी नहर से चूड़ियां, सैंडिल, और हड्डी बरामद की है। एक थैले में रखी हुई दो पिस्तौलें भी नहर से निकाली गई हैं।

त्रिनिदाद और टोबैगो की प्रधानमंत्री कमला प्रसाद बिसेसर ने आज शाम प्रधानमंत्री डॉ० मनमोहन सिंह के साथ बातचीत के बाद पांच समझौतों पर हस्तार किए गये। इनमें व्यापार, निवेश, सूचना टेक्नोलॉजी, स्वास्थ्य और आपसी हवाई सेवा का समझौता शामिल है। इसके अलावा संस्कृति, दवाओं और शिक्षा से संबंधित समझौते शामिल हैं। इस अवसर पर दोनों देशों के प्रतिनिधिमंडल भी मौजूद थे।

बातचीत के बाद जारी संयुक्त विज्ञप्ति में दोनों नेताओं ने अंतर्राष्ट्रीय आर्थिक और वित्तीय संकट पर गहरी चिन्ता व्यक्त की। दोनों पक्षों ने इस बात पर सहमति जताई कि मौजूदा स्थिति की मांग है कि अंतर्राष्ट्रीय वित्तीय और मौद्रिक प्रणालियों का पुनर्गठन किया जाय।

सीरिया में राजधानी दमिश्क के मध्य में एक आत्मघाती बम हमले में पचीस लोग मारे गये हैं और ४६ अन्य घायल हो गये हैं। सरकारी समाचार एजेंसी साना के अनुसार यह हमला पुलिस कर्मचारियों को ले जा रही एक बस को निशाना बनाकर किया गया था। इस हमले की जिम्मेदारी अभी तक किसी ने नहीं ली है।

निर्वाचन आयोग ने उत्तरप्रदेश के प्रशासनिक और पुलिस अधिकारियों से आगामी विधानसभा चुनाव में स्वतंत्र और निष्पक्ष तरीके से काम करने को कहा है। आज लखनऊ में चुनाव तैयारियों की समीक्षा करते हुए मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त एस.वाई. कुरैशी और निर्वाचन आयुक्तों वी.एस. संपत और एच.एस. ब्रह्‌मा ने कहा कि मतदाताओं के लिए इलेक्ट्रॉनिक फोटो आइडेंटिटी कार्ड-एपिक और मतदाता पर्चियों के वितरण में सरकारी कर्मियों को प्रभावी उपाय करने चाहिएं। उन्होंने कहा कि आयोग पहले ही फैसला कर चुका है कि एपिक के आधार पर ही मतदान कराया जाएगा।

बाम्बे स्टाक एक्सचेंज के सेंसेक्स में आज मामूली ११ अंक की वृद्धि हुई और यह १५ हजार ८६८ पर बंद हुआ। दिन के कारोबार के समय सेंसेक्स में जबरदस्त उतार चढाव रहा था। नेशनल स्टाक एक्सचेंज का निफटी भी आज चार अंक बढ़कर चार हजार ७५४ पर बंद हुआ।

Home Minister P Chidambaram today said that extortion in the north east region remains a matter of concern. Addressing the seventh North East Business Summit in New Delhi today, Mr Chidambaram said that such incidents have come down significantly in the previous year and the situation will improve further this year. He stressed the need for stable peace in the region to attract more investment in the region.

"I think states in the Northeast have responsibility to ensure that these extortion rackets are suppressed. The Centre has offered support to all States Governments to ensure that extortion does not take place".
The Home Minister said that most of the north east region is conflict free and nearly all separatist groups in the region are in talks with the government. He said that militant groups in the North East have realised that violence will not pay. Stating that it was heartening that most of the militant groups are in favour of a dialogue, he said that peace in the region can be achieved only through talks.

India is keen to give Bangladesh the most preferred nation status for trade across the border. The government will try to ensure capital flows to that country for business. Further, Mr Chidambaram said that the two countries can join hands in making this part of the world a hub of business activities. He said Bangladesh is blessed with natural resources, especially natural gas and India with entrepreneurs and capital.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said the fiscal deficit for 2011-12 could be more than the projected figure. He WAS addressing a three-day international conference organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India in Chennai. He added,the Eurozone crisis and slow progress in other parts of the world has also affected India. Observing that India's fiscal deficit rose to 6.5 per cent in 2008-09 due to the global financial crisis, he said in 2009-10 it was brought to 4.5 per cent. In the Budget, the fiscal deficit is projected at 4.6 per cent of the GDP. The Finance Minister said the GDP is expected to be at 9.25 per cent this year.

The government says it will soon notify 100 per cent foreign direct investment in single-brand retail. Secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion P K Chaudhery, said this in response to a question about issuance of notification of 100 per cent FDI in single-brand retail. The decision to increase FDI in single brand retail was taken by the Cabinet on 24th of November last year. Presently, for single brand retailers, 51 per cent FDI is permitted.

The Supreme Court has given the green signal to conduct trial against Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in their daughter Aarushi's murder case. The Apex court dismissed the Talwar couple's petition for quashing of criminal proceedings against them. The Talwar couple will be tried for the murder of their 13-year-old daughter, Aarushi, who was found in their apartment with her throat slit. The Talwars had asked the Supreme Court to over-rule the verdict of a lower court that ordered the CBI to make them the main accused in the case.

An Allahabad court has slapped team Anna member Shanti Bhushan with a fine of 27 lakh rupees for evading stamp duty to the tune of 1.35 crore rupees. Assistant Stamp Commissioner K P Pandey today said that Mr. Bhushan, a former Union Minister, has so far paid 46,700 rupees towards stamp duty for the purchase of the property spread over 7,818 Square metres of land in the posh Civil Lines area. He will have to pay within a month the outstanding amount, in addition to the fine, with 1.5 per cent interest with effect from 29th November 2010.

The CBI today formally took over investigation into the 2004 fake encounter killing of Mumbai college girl Ishrat Jahan and three others in Gujarat. It was done following directions from the Gujarat High Court. A team of CBI officials headed by IG V V Laxminarayan, was handed over the case papers and other documents related to the case in Amedabad by officials of the high court-appointed Special Investigation Team. Mr. Laxminarayan heads the Hyderabad Zone of the agency.

Meanwhile in an important development, the CBI has found some more evidence in Jaloda village today. A team of divers got some bangles, sandal, ash and bone from Indira Gandhi canal. One bag containing two pistols was also recovered from the canal.

Congress charged BJP and BSP today of having a mutual understanding to politicize the corruption issue. Briefing reporters, party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that expulsion of a tainted UP Minister by one party and induction by the other is an evidence of this fact. He added that senior BJP leader L K Advani should start a ‘Jan Chetna Yatra’ to generate awareness about corruption in his party.

BJP today said that it will take appropriate action against newly inducted party member Babu Singh Khushwaha if there is any indictment against him. Talking to reporters in New Delhi today, party spokesperson Nirmala Sitaraman said that BJP is being targeted because it is giving a platform to leaders from the OBC background who have been denied leadership by other parties. She also charged the Congress with nepotism and said that decision making in Congress is dominated by family politics.

Five pacts including a bilateral air-service agreement were signed at the end of the delegation level talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Trinidad-and-Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar in New Delhi this evening. The two Prime Ministers decided to enhance trade and economic investment and focussed on energy , information technology and health sectors in the talks. The other MoUs are in the areas of culture, medicine, and education.
In a joint statement issued after the talks, the two leaders expressed deep concern over the international, economic and financial crisis and agreed that the current situation demands restructuring of international, financial and monetary system. The two sides discussed in detail international development and multilateralism and said that they will take more steps to enhance cooperation between the two countries.

In Syria, 25 persons were killed and over 46 were injured in a suicide bombing in Central Damascus. The Official Syrian News Agency SANA said the blast was carried out by a suicide bomber who blew himself up at a traffic light in a densely populated area. Most of those killed were civilians. This is the second such incident in the capital Damascus. Details are awaited.

Heavy Industry and Public Sector Enterprises Minister Praful Patel and Road Transport and Highways Minister C P Joshi today formally inaugurated the 11th Auto Expo 2012 in New Delhi. Strengthening the security apparatus to combat terrorism will top the agenda of the Delhi Police this year. This was stated by the Delhi Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta while addressing the annual press conference in New Delhi today. Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh has urged the finance ministry to increase the widow and old age pension from 200 to 500 rupees in the first phase of the 12th five year plan to empower women. Addressing the three day National Consultation on agrarian single women in New Delhi today, Mr Ramesh said that government is committed to empower the single women in the country for sustainable development. He said that his ministry will provide complete financial support to those NGOs who are working for the empowerment of single women.

Over 284 lakh hectare areas have been covered under wheat cultivation across the country so far. According to a data released by the Agriculture Ministry, the cultivated area is 80 thousand hectare more than last year during the same period. Higher coverage of wheat has been reported from Madhya Pradesh followed by Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Bihar. The release also said that sowing of rice is also picking up in states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha and Tamil Nadu.

भारत ने चीन में बंधक बनाए गए दो भारतीय व्यापारियों को सुरक्षित रिहा करा लिया है। स्थानीय लोगों ने यीवू व्यापार केन्द्र में व्यापारियों को बंधक बनाकर यातनाएं दी थी। व्यापारियों को शंघाई में महावाणिज्य दूतावास में पहुंचा दिया गया है। विदेश मंत्री एस एम कृष्णा ने बताया कि चीन के राजदूत चांग यान ने आश्वासन दिया है कि चीन भारतीय व्यापारी दीपक रहेजा और श्याम सुन्दर अग्रवाल की सुरक्षा पर पूरा ध्यान दे रहा है। विदेश मंत्री ने कहा कि भारत और चीन इस बात पर सहमत हैं कि दोनों भारतीयों की सुरक्षा को सर्वोच्च प्राथमिकता दी जाए।

भारत की चीन के साथ सहयोग पूर्ण राजनीतिक साझेदारी है और हम चीन के साथ बहुत सदभावपूर्ण और मैत्रीपूर्ण  संबंध चाहते हैं। हमें किसी व्यक्ति के मामले को उछालना नहीं चाहिए, जो कुछ व्यपारिक मतभेदों के कारण पैदा हुए हैं। हमें इसे बढ़ा-चढ़ा कर पेश नहीं करना चाहिए, जिससे चीन के साथ हमारे संबंधों पर असर पड़े।''

उत्तर प्रदेश में सीबीआई ने राज्य सरकार के तीन वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों को गिरतार किया है। जिनमें परिवार कल्याण विभाग के दो पूर्व महानिदेशक और जल निगम का महाप्रबंधक शामिल हैं। राष्ट्रीय ग्रामीण स्वास्थ्य मिशन घोटाले के संबंध में छापेमारी के बाद ये गिरतारियां हुई हैं।
सीबीआई ने इन अधिकारियों के आवासों से अनेक दस्तावेज और भारी मात्रा में नकदी बरामद की है। सीबीआई ने इसके संबंध में आठ एफआईआर दर्ज की है।

उत्तर प्रदेश में आगामी विधानसभा चुनावों के लिए भारतीय जनता पार्टी ने ७७ उम्मीदवारों की तीसरी सूची जारी की है। इसमें लगभग १५ पूर्व विधायक और चार पूर्व सांसद तथा दस महिला उम्मीदवार शामिल हैं। अब तक भाजपा ३०१ उम्मीदवारों की घोषणा कर चुकी है।

केन्द्रीय सूचना आयोग ने कहा है कि भारत के प्रधान न्यायाधीश के कार्यालय की सभी सूचनाओं को सूचना के अधिकार कानून के तहत प्रकट करने से पूरी तरह छूट हासिल नहीं है। आयोग ने जजों की नियुक्ति की प्रक्रिया में प्रस्तावित बदलावों के सवाल पर भारत के प्रधान न्यायाधीश और विधि मंत्रालय के बीच पत्र व्यवहार को प्रकट करने के लिए उच्चतम न्यायालय को निर्देश देते समय यह बात कही। मुख्य सूचना आयुक्त सत्यानन्द ने इस आदेश में कहा कि जजों की नियुक्ति की प्रक्रिया या इस प्रक्रिया में संशोधन के लिए किसी प्रस्ताव को सार्वजनिक वेबसाइट पर अनिवार्य रूप से उपलब्ध कराया जाना चाहिए ताकि नागरिकों को वस्तुस्थिति की जानकारी हो सके।

हिमाचल प्रदेश में कुल्लू जिले में मनाली के निकट गुलाबा में भारी हिमपात के कारण फंसे सैंकड़ों पर्यटकों को कल रात निकाल लिया गया। हमारी शिमला संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि सभी पर्यटकों को मनाली लाया गया है और अब वे   सुरक्षित हैं। इस बीच क्षेत्र में हिमपात जारी है। सरकारी प्रवक्ता ने पर्यटकों को दूरदराज के क्षेत्रों में नहीं जाने की सलाह दी है क्योंकि अगले तीन दिनों में भारी हिमपात होने की आशंका है।

उत्तर भारत में ठंड बढ़ गई है। घने कोहरे से क्षेत्र में सड़क, रेल और हवाई यातायात बाधित है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया कि दिल्ली में आज सुबह न्यूनतम तापमान लगभग आठ डिग्री सेल्सियस था और घना कोहरा छाया रहा।

घने कोहरे के वज+ह से राजधानी में हवाई और ट्रेन सेवाएं प्रभावित हुईं। इसकी वज+ह से यात्रियों को काफी परेशानी का सामना करना पड़ा। इंदिरा गांधी अंतर्राष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे के अधिकारियों के अनुसार रनवे पर दृष्यता सीमा लगभग ५० मीटर रही और खराब दृष्यता की वज+ह से कुछ उड़ाने देर से शुरू हुई। कोहरे की वज+ह से दो दर्जन से ज्यादा रेलगाड़िया देर से चल रही है। उत्त्र रेलवे ने कोहरे को देखते हुए पहले ही २० गाड़ियों का परिचालन इस महीने के अंत तक रद्द कर दिया है। दिल्ली से आकाशवाणी समाचार के लिए आनन्द कुमार।''

ईरान से तेल आयात करने पर प्रतिबंध लगाने के लिए यूरोपीय संघ के देशों के बीच सैद्धांतिक तौर पर सहमति बन गई है। ईरान के परमाणु कार्यक्रम पर दबाव बनाने के लिए यह कदम उठाया गया है। आधिकारिक तौर पर इसकी घोषणा ३० जनवरी को यूरोपीय संघ के विदेश मंत्रियों की बैठक में की जाएगी। अमरीका ने यूरोपीय संघ के फैसले का स्वागत किया है।

India has secured the release of two Indian traders who were tortured and taken captive by locals in a trading hub in China. They have been safely brought to the consulate in Shanghai. External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said after talks with the Chinese Ambassador Zhang Yan that he has been assured that Beijing was paying serious attention to the safety of the Indian traders, Deepak Raheja and Shyam Sunder Agarwal.  He said the incident should not be blown out of proportion.
"India has cooperative strategic partnership with China and we would like to have very cordial, very friendly and fraternal relationship with China. And you should not blow some of these incidents which arise out of some trading differences or trading conflicts to blow out of the proportion and get distort good relationship that we have with China."

India has taken strong objection to the American government's gross inaccuracies regarding the Jammu and Kashmir boundaries depicted in a map posted on a US State Department Website. In a statement in New Delhi, External Affairs Ministry, MEA,  spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said that India has consistently rejected incorrect depiction of its borders on maps used by the US government. He asserted that the entire border state of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country. 
Meanwhile, the US State Department has accepted a goof up in this regard and has posted a new map of India on its Website. Talking to reporters  in Washington, US State Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland said that the revised map has been put on the Website in which the dotted line  representing the Line of Control of 1972 has now been labelled.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Central Bureau of Investigation CBI has arrested three senior officers of state government following raids in connection with National Rural Health Mission, NRHM scam. The arrested officers include two former Director General of Family Welfare department and a General Manager of Jal Nigam.   CBI had registered eight FIRs in connection with the NRHM scam. Our Lucknow correspondent reports that investigation agency has recovered relevant documents and huge cash from their residences.
The CBI has raided offices and residences of expelled BSP leader and then Family Welfare Minister Kushwaha and his close associates and some businessmen.  The CBI teams also raided establishments including residences of BSP MLC Ram Chander Pradhan, two former DG of Medical Health and Family Welfare, Dr SP Ram and Dr RR Bharti, General Manager UP Jal Nigam PK Jain and Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation, Chief Abhay Kumar Vajpayee. The CBI has been investigating the case after a direction from the Allahabad High Court in November last year. Sunil Shukla, AIR News Lucknow.

The Central Information Commission has held that all information in possession of the office of the Chief Justice of India is not completely exempt from disclosure under the Right To Information,  RTI act. The CIC said this while directing the Supreme Court to disclose communication exchange between Chief Justice of India and the Law Ministry on the question of proposed changes in appointment procedure for Judges. Chief Information Commissioner Satyananda Mishra said in an order that, the procedure of appointment of judges or any proposal for modifying that procedure should necessarily be available in the public domain so that citizens know what is transpiring among the major stake holders. The order came on an appeal by RTI activist Subhash Agrawal on this issue.

Eminent scientist, Prof Trinh Xuan Thuan, of Vietnam has been conferred with the prestigious 'Kalinga Chair' award at the 99th Indian Science Congress being held at Bhubaneswar. Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, gave away the award marking 60th anniversary of the prestigious UNESCO Kalinga Prize. The award was given by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in association with Bhubaneswar-based Kalinga Foundation Trust, Union Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Science and Technology.

In Himachal Pradesh, hundreds of tourists who were stranded due to heavy snowfall in Gulaba area near Manali  in Kullu district, were rescued last night. Our Shimla correspondent reports that all the tourists have been brought to Manali and they are reported to be safe now. After receiving the news about the tourists trapped in the area, the administration deployed Snow Scooters to rescue them.
Meanwhile, intermittent snowfall continues in the region and a government  spokesperson has advised tourists not to venture into remote areas of the state during winter as chances of snow are high in the next three days.

The Cold wave has tightened its grip over North India with fog disrupting road, rail and air traffic in the region. Delhiites woke up to a cold morning today with the minimum temperature hovering at around eight degree Celsius while a dense layer of fog covered the city in the early hours. Hundreds of passengers were stranded at Indira Gandhi International airport and at the various railways stations in Delhi as the dense fog disrupted the flights and train operations in the morning. According to the Airport officials, the railway visibility was reduced to 50 meters due to which some flights were delayed. Over two dozens of trains are reported to be running late. Northern Railways has already cancelled services of 20 long route trains  upto the end of this month in view of the foggy weather conditions. Anand Kumar for AIR news, Delhi.
Dense fog also enveloped many parts of Uttar Pradesh,  Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh affecting normal life even as bitter cold persisted in the region. Railway sources said that fog affected the normal movement of trains passing through these states and many were delayed by hours.

A  fire broke out at the cargo terminal of the Indira Gandhi International Airport at New Delhi early this morning but there were no immediate reports of any casualties. Officials said the blaze erupted at around 1.15 AM and that 22 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. The cargo terminal is located at a distance of about one km from Terminal 3.

European Union, member states have agreed in principle to ban import of Iranian crude oil to put pressure on Iran for its nuclear programme. The move is expected to be announced formally at European Union Foreign Ministers' meeting at the end of January. The United States, which recently imposed fresh sanctions on Iran, has welcomed the news. Meanwhile, Iran has dismissed the threat of new sanctions and denies Western claims that it is trying to develop a nuclear weapons programme.

The latest edition of Auto Expo will witness as many as 50 global brands showcasing their products. Jharkhand has banned extraction of sands from rivers near bridges with immediate effect. The order issued by Chief Minister Arjun Munda bans sand extraction from both sides within 250 meters for minor and 500 meters for major bridges on all National and State highways and district roads.  The order has been issued to prevent instability to the pillars of bridges as there were reports that suggested that sand extraction from Kanchi River near the bridges on NH 33 could create problem for the bridges.

  • And finally: The Times of India writes that British scientists have discovered what they claim is a 'lost world' of unknown species nearly 8,000 feet deep on the sea floor, off the coast of Antarctica, kept alive by undersea volcanoes. The species found - include colonies of marine life, crabs, an octopus and starfish, totally new to science, living in the murky depths.
