पाकिस्तान में अल्पसंख्यक मामलों के केंद्रीय मंत्री शाहबाज भट्टी की आज सवेरे इस्लामाबाद में हत्या कर दी गई। 42 वर्षीय श्री भट्टी ज्यों ही अपने घर से निकले कम से कम दो बंदूकधारियों ने उनकी कार पर घात लगाकर हमला किया। प्रत्यक्षदर्शियों के अनुसार बाद में यह बंदूकधारी एक कार से फरार हो गए। श्री भट्टी को तुरंत इस्लामाबाद के एक अस्पताल में ले जाया गया लेकिन उन्होंने रास्ते में ही दम तोड़ दिया। अभी तक किसी संगठन ने भी हमले की जिम्मेदारी नहीं ली है लेकिन तहरीके तालिबान पाकिस्तान की कुछ पर्चियां घटनास्थल पर पाई गई हैं जिनमें कहा गया है कि ईश निंदा कानून का विरोध करने वालों का यही अंजाम होगा। श्री भट्टी पाकिस्तान पीपल्स पार्टी के नेता थे और केंद्रीय मंत्रिमंडल के एकमात्र कैथोलिक ईसाई सदस्य थे। वे पाकिस्तान में ईश निंदा कानून में संशोधन किए जाने के पक्ष में थे।
गौरतलब है कि इसी साल चार जनवरी को पंजाब के गवर्नर सलमान तासीर की उन्हीं के एक अंगरक्षक ने गोली मारकर हत्या कर दी थी। इस अंगरक्षक का कहना था कि वह ईश निंदा कानून में परिवर्तन के श्री तासीर के विचारों का विरोध करता है। प्रधानमंत्री यूसुफ रजा गिलानी ने घटना की निंदा करते हुए श्री भट्टी की हत्या की जांच का आदेश दिया है। राष्ट्रपति आसिफ अली जरदारी ने भी श्री भट्टी पर किए गए जानलेवा हमले की कड़ी निंदा की है। उन्होंने कहा है कि ऐसी घटनाओं से कट्टरवाद और आतंकवाद समाप्त करने का सरकार का संकल्प कम नहीं होगा।
भारत ने पाकिस्तान के अल्पसंख्यक विभाग के मंत्री शाहबाज भट्टी की हत्या की निंदा की है। विदेश मंत्रालय के एक वक्तव्य में कहा गया है कि भारत इस घड़ी में श्री भट्टी के परिवार और पाकिस्तान की जनता के प्रति हार्दिक समवेदना व्यक्त करता है।
वैटीकन में पोप के प्रवक्ता ने कहा कि इस घटना की निंदा के लिए उनके पास शब्द नहीं हैं। लंदन में आर्क बिशप ऑफ कैंटरबरी ने भी उनकी हत्या पर गहरे सदमे का इजहार किया है। उन्होंने कहा है कि इस घटना से पाकिस्तान के ईसाई तथा अन्य अल्पसंख्यक समुदायों में दहशत बढ़ गई है।
पूर्व राजनयिक ए.एन. राम का कहना है कि पाकिस्तान के कट्टरपंथी तत्व उदार विचार के लोगों पर हावी होते जा रहे हैं।
ये इस बात का प्रतीक है कि वहां के जो रेटिकल एलिमेंट्स हैं.....तालिबान के एलिमेंट्स हैं। वो कभी भी यह नहीं मानने को तैयार है कि पाकिस्तान में भी दूसरे विचार के लोगों को जोकि उदार विचार रखते हैं। उनको भी कोई स्थान प्राप्त हो और ये इस बात की तलब इशारा करता है कि वहां की जो आतंकवादी घटनाएं हैं जोकि वहां के ...लोग हैं। उनका इससे ताल्लुक इसलिए भी है कि......और टेरिरिजम उसका एक प्रतिबिंब हैं। उससे लगता है कि पाकिस्तान के समाज को बहुत आंतरिक सोच-विचार करना पड़ेगा क्योंकि अगर यह नहीं होता है तो पाकिस्तान के अस्तित्व को ही इससे खतरा बन सकता है।

लीबिया में फंसे भारतीयों को निकालने का काम तेज कर दिया गया है। आज त्रिपोली से एक हजार से अधिक यात्रियों को लेकर तीन और उड़ानें नई दिल्ली के लिए रवाना हुईं। ये उड़ानें हर रोज जारी रहेंगी और जरूरत पड़ने पर इनमें वृद्धि की जा सकती है। आज सुबह तीन बैचों में एक हजार से अधिक भारतीय स्वदेश लौटे। भारतीय जहाज एम. वी स्कोर्शिया प्रिंस कल करीब एक हजार दो सौ यात्रियों को लेकर लीबिया में बेनगाजी से रवाना हुआ। इसके आज रात मिस्र में सिकंदरिया पहुंचने की उम्मीद है। इन भारतीयों को वहां से लाने के लिए चार विशेष उड़ानें चलाई जाएंगी। कल रात लीबिया से 78 यात्रियों को लेकर एक चार्टर्ड उड़ान साईप्रस में लारनासा पहुंची। भारतीय उच्चायोग इन लोगों को कमर्शियल उड़ानों से भारत भेज रहा है। इस बीच दो सौ 67 भारतीय सीमा पार करके मिस्र में सल्लोअम पहुंच गए हैं। इनमें से एक सौ अस्सी लोग टुकड़ियों में मुंबई पहुंच गए हैं। इनके अलावा एक हजार चार सौ लोग ट्यूनिस में द्येरबा पहुंच गए हैं। उन्हें स्वदेश लाने के लिए विशेष उड़ानों की व्यवस्था की जा रही है। अब तक लीबिया से छह हजार दो सौ भारतीयों को निकाला जा चुका है। ये , वहां मौजूद करीब 18 हजार लोगों की एक-तिहाई संख्या है।

लीबिया से आने वाले पंजाब वासियों की मदद के लिए पंजाब सरकार ने इंदिरा गांधी अंतर्राष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे पर एक हैल्प डैस्क बनाया है। आपदा प्रबंधन निदेशक के अंतर्गत चंडीगढ़ में एक पुनर्वास सैल भी बनाया गया है। इसका नम्बर है 0172-2 7 4 0 1 7 3.

लीबिया के सरकारी टेलीविजन ने कहा है कि सरकारी सेनाओं ने अलब्रेगा शहर के हवाई अड्डे और बंदरगाह पर कब्जा कर लिया है। लेकिन विपक्ष का कहना है कि शहर पर हुए हमले को नाकाम कर दिया गया है।

बहरीन की राजधानी मनामा के पर्ल स्क्वायर में हजारों प्रदर्शनकारी एकत्रित हैं। उधर, विपक्ष भी शासन में जबर्दस्त सुधार की अपनी मांग पर अडिग है। कल मनामा की सड़कों पर बड़ी संख्या में लोगों ने प्रदर्शन किया। हमारे पश्चिम एशिया संवाददाता ने बताया है कि सुधारों के बारे में अभी बातचीत शुरू नहीं हुई है, क्योंकि विपक्ष पहले निर्वाचित सरकार के गठन का वायदा करने की घोषणा सुनना चाहता है।

बहरीन में आंदोलन की शुरूआत के बाद से अब तक सरकार और विपक्ष के बीच कोई औपचारिक बातचीत शुरू नहीं हो सकी है। बातचीत प्रारंभ करने के उद्देश्य से राजा ने राजनैतिक कैदियों को रिहा किया है और केबिनेट में परिवर्तन के अलावा नागरिकों को आर्थिक सहायता की घोषणा भी की है। इन रिपोटों के बीच की खाड़ी सहयोग परिसर के देश बहरीन और ओबाम में आर्थिक मदद पर विचार कर रहे हैं। बहरीन के युवराज का कुवैत, संयुक्त अरब अमरात और सउदी अरब का दौरा हुआ है। पड़ौसी देशों में फैलते आंदोलन को देखते हुए। संयुक्त अरब अमारात ने अपनी उत्तरी अमिरातो में आधारभूत ढ़ांचा मजबूत करने के लिए धन निवेश करने का फैसला लिया है।

पांच विधानसभाओं के लिए चुनाव प्रक्रिया शुरू हो गई है और आदर्श आचार संहिता तुरंत लागू हो गई है। मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त एस.वाई. कुरैशी ने पश्चिम बंगाल में छह चरणों में, असम में दो चरणों में और तमिलनाडु, केरल तथा पुड्डुचेरी में एक ही दिन में चुनाव कराने की घोषणा की है। मतगणना 13 मई को होगी। आयोग ने पश्चिम बंगाल में कानून और व्यवस्था की स्थिति की जानकारी लेने के लिए दो टीमें भेजीं। मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त ने बताया कि सभी महत्वपूर्ण चुनाव प्रक्रियाओं की वीडियोग्राफी की जाएगी। चुनावों में धन-शक्ति के खतरे पर अंकुश लगाने के लिए एक व्यय निगरानी प्रभाग भी बनाया गया है।
चुनाव कार्यक्रम की घोषणा के साथ ही असम में राजनीतिक दलों ने 126 विधानसभा सीटों के लिए अपने-अपने उम्मीदवारों के नामों की सूची को अंतिम रूप देने के लिए गतिविधियां तेज कर दी हैं। भारतीय कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी-सी.पी.आई. ने राज्य से चुनाव लड़ने के लिए 22 उम्मीदवारों की पहली सूची जारी की है।

तृणमूल कांगे्रस की प्रमुख ममता बनर्जी ने कहा है कि वे पश्चिम बंगाल में विधानसभा चुनाव नहीं लड़ेंगी बल्कि अपनी पार्टी के लिए चुनाव प्रचार करेंगी। उन्होंने आज कोलकाता में संवाददाताओं से कहा कि अगर उनकी पार्टी जीती तो, वे छह महीनों में विधानसभा के लिए चुनाव लड़ेंगी जैसा कि संविधान में प्रावधान भी है।

तमिलनाडु के मुख्य चुनाव अधिकारी प्रवीण कुमार ने शुक्रवार को सभी दलों की बैठक बुलाई है।

प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह ने आज राष्ट्रपति भवन में राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा देवीसिंह पाटील से मुलाकात की। राष्ट्रपति भवन की विज्ञप्ति में बताया गया है कि चालीस मिनट की इस बैठक में संसद के बजट अधिवेशन, संयुक्त संसदीय समिति से संबंधित मुद्दों, महंगाई रोकने के उपायों, खाद्य सुरक्षा, आंतरिक सुरक्षा और अरब देशों में वर्तमान स्थिति पर विचार-विमर्श हुआ।

वित्त मंत्री प्रणब मुखर्जी ने कहा है कि महंगाई का कोई दूरगामी समाधान निकालना, बजट का मुख्य उद्देश्य है क्योंकि महंगाई का आम आदमी पर असर पड़ा है। श्री मुखर्जी ने आकाशवाणी के साथ एक विशेष भेंट में बताया कि मांग और आपूर्ति में अंतर के कारण ही महंगाई ज्यादातर बढ़ी।
यद्यपि फरवरी, 2011 में कुल मुद्रास्फीति की दर 20 दशमलव 2 प्रतिशत से घटकर जनवरी, 2011 में 9 दशमलव 3 प्रतिशत हो गई है। यह अभी भी हमारे लिए चिंता की बात है। सरकार के सामने सबसे बड़ी चुनौती मूल्य स्थिरता के साथ बिना कोई समझौता किए इस मुद्रास्फीति को कम करना है।
उधर, प्रधानमंत्री की आर्थिक सलाहकार परिषद का कहना है कि मुद्रास्फीति की दर को चार से पांच प्रतिशत के बीच लाने के लिए कई उपाय किए जाएंगे।

रिहासी जिले में स्थित शिव खोरी में अभी तक 90 हजार श्रद्वालू अभी तक पवित्र गुफा के दर्शन कर चुके हैं जबकि हजारों श्रद्वालू अभी तक अपनी बारी के प्रतीक्षा में है। उधर जिला सांबा के उत्तर ..और प्रमंडल शिव स्थलों पर भी श्रद्वालूओं की भारी भीड़ देखने को आई है। कश्मीरी पंड़ित समुदाय तीन दिवसीय हेल्थ के अंतर्गत आज ...मना रहा है। त्यौहार के चलते राज्य के राज्य के प्रमुख शिवायलयों में सुरक्षा एवं अन्य सुवधिाओं के व्यापक प्रबंध किए गए हैं। उत्तर प्रदेश के ंविभिन्न शहरों में मंदिरों को आकर्षक ढंग से सजाया गया है। हरिद्वार में आज बड़ी संख्या में श्रद्धालुओं ने गंगा में डुबकी लगाई।

Pakistan's Minorities Minister, Shahbaz Bhatti, has been assassinated. Gunmen opened fire at the Minister's car in the capital, Islamabad today when was travelling to work through a residential district. He was the only Christian Minister in the Government. The Taliban have claimed the responsibility for the assassination. Mr. Bhatti, a Roman Catholic had been calling for changes in the Pakistan's controversial Blasphemy law. According to  BBC, they received a video  recorded by the Minister requesting it  to be played if he were murdered.  In the video, the Minister said  he was ready to die for a cause and he was living for his community and suffering people.

India has condemned the assassination of the Pakistan Minister. An External Affairs Ministry release said, New Delhi is with the bereaved family and the people of Pakistan at this difficult hour. The Vatican has condemned the killing of Shahbaz Bhatti.

In the Kashmir valley, a District Commander of Jais-e-Mohmad outfit was killed in an encounter in village Dadsar in Pulwama district. Police sources said that the encounter lasted for several hours and the house in which the terrorist was hiding also got damaged. AIR Correspondent reports that a security man also received injury in the encounter.

As the evacuation of the Indians from strife torn Libya gathers momentum, three more flights with over  1000 passengers have left Tripoli for New Delhi. These flights will continue daily over the coming days and may be stepped up further. Over thousand Indians returned home in three batches early this morning. Indian Ship MV Scortia Prince sailed out of Benghazi, Libya with about 1200 passengers on board yesterday. It is likely to reach the Egyptian coast of Alexandria later tonight. Four special flights will be operated tomorrow to bring back these Indians from there. A charter flight carrying 78 passengers arrived at Larnasa in Cyprus from Libya last evening and the Indian High Commission is sending them through commercial flights to India. Another 126 Indians have left Libya on their own in coordination with Indian missions. Another  267 Indians have crossed over to Salloum in Egypt and 180 of them have returned home in batches to Mumbai. Besides this, 1400 persons have reached Djerba in Tunis and special flights are being scheduled to bring them back home soon. So far about 6200 Indian nationals have been pulled out of Libya which is one-third of the estimated 18,000 people from the country there.

Meanwhile, Libyan state television said Government forces now control the town of Al-Brega's air and sea ports.  But the opposition said the attack had been repulsed. Col. Gaddafi has been making a televised address to several hundred supporters.

In Bahrain, thousands of protesters are camping at Pearl Square in capital Manama as country's crown prince is leading efforts to launch a dialogue with the opposition. Meanwhile, Bahrain's Social Development Minister, Fatima Al-Balooshi has said that the government is interested in dialogue but a small minority in Bahrain, prevented talks. Bahrain's opposition reiterated its demands for major reforms, which include a commitment to an elected government first while a government insists that all issues can be discussed only on negotiating table.

In Oman, anti government protests were organised in Soha while people took out rally in support of Sultan in Muscat. Government has announced 150 Omani riyals monthly unemployment allowance and made changes in cabinet. In Yemen, students and pro-democracy demonstrators have been camping at a square near Sanaa University asking President Saleh to step down who is in power for more than 32 years. Meanwhile in a press conference in Sanaa, President Saleh has accused the United States and Israel of trying to destabilize his country and the Arab world.

Back home, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today called on the President Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil at Rashtrapati Bhawan. According to a Rashtrapati Bhawan communique, during the 40 minute meeting, they discussed the ongoing budget session of the Parliament and issues related  to the JPC, measures to check price rise, food security, internal security and the current situation in the Arab world. The two leaders also discussed various other issues of national and international importance.

Political activities gained momentum in five states after the announcement of election schedule yesterday. Model code of conduct  came into immediate effect after the Election Commission announced a six phase voting in West Bengal, a two stage poll in Assam and a single day poll in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. Counting of votes in all the five states will take place on May 13th. Political parties in these states have geared up their activities to finalize the lists of candidates.  The Communist Party of India (CPI) has released its first list of candidates for 22 to contest from the State. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has announced that  she will not contest the Assembly elections in West Bengal and campaign for her party. She said in Kolkata, in case her party wins, she would get elected to the Assembly within six months for which there is a constitutional provision.     

Tamil Nadu state units of BJP and CPM  have raised objections on the announcement of the polling date which falls on April 13th citing various reasons.The State BJP  said that as a section of people in the State would be celebrating the Tamil new year day on April 14th, the present polling date would dampen the preparations of the new year celebrations. The CPM state Unit  said that around nine lakh students  appearing for class 10 exams scheduled from March 28 to April 11 in Tamilnadu and Puducherry will also be affected due to campaigning.

Prime Minister's economic advisory council said all steps will be taken to bring down inflation between 4 to 5 per cent. The chairman of the council Dr. C. Rangrajan said in New Delhi that the policy measures include rate hikes and intervention in grain markets. He said,   both fiscal and monetary policies are required to contain inflationary pressure. Expressing concern over the high food inflation, he said it has come down to 11.49 per cent. Dr. Rangrajan expressed the hope that inflation will come down to 7 per cent by the end of next month. He disagreed with the proposition that high growth rate requires high inflation. He however said that he saw inflation a short term  constraint to achieve 9 per cent growth.

In a major relief for exporters, the government has slashed the minimum export price (MEP) for onions by 25 per cent to 450 US dollar per tonne from earlier 600 US dollar per tonne. In a notification, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said,the slashed MEP of onions will not apply to Bangalore Rose and Krishnapuram onions. Last month, the government had lifted the ban on onion exports after farmers' protested a crash in domestic prices. But it  restricted overseas sales by capping the MEP at  600 US dollar per tonne as a precautionary measure to control local price.

Government today said, it is making all efforts to seek the release of six Indian hostages on board an Egyptian cargo ship which was hijacked by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, External affairs minister S M Krishna maintained that the Shipping Ministry is the nodal authority in all cases involving Indians taken hostage by pirates . He, however, said Indian missions have been advised to help the shipping ministry  in seeking release of hostages .  He said that  he also spoke to Ambassador in Cairo to get the sailors released.

Mahashivratri is being celebrated with religious fervor and devotion throughout the country today. A large number of devotes are performing special Shivratri puja at different shivalayas.

In Uttar Pradesh, a sea of devotees Chanting Har Har Mahadev thronged various temples of Lord Shiva. The pious city of Varanasi saw huge rush of devotees at Kashi Vishwanath temple one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of the country.

Religious processions known as Shiv Baraats were also taken out in various parts amid tight security. District administration deployed cops at various Ganga ghats and in and around Vishwanath temple. Lakhs of devotees performed the bathing ritual at Sangam, the confluence of holy Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati in Allahabad on this occasion. Mahashivratri is the last bath festival of month long Magh Mela.

In Uttrakhand, people performed religious ceremonies in different lord Shiva temples across the state. In Haridwar devotees took holy bath  in river Ganga.

In Jammu and Kashmir,   a large number of devotees thronged  Shiva temples and performed pujas.

Reports of Shiv Ratri celebrations have also come in from other parts of the country. In neighbouring Nepal, devotees thronged the famous Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu.

In the on-going ICC Cricket World Cup, England have set a challenging target of 328 runs for Ireland in the Group 'B'  Day-Night match at  the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.   Electing to bat after winning the toss, England made 327 for 8 in their 50 overs. Ireland were 205 for5 in 34 overs when the reports last came in.

Tomorrow South Africa will play Netherlands al Mohali, Chandigarh. All India Radio will broadcast the preview and running commentary on this match from 9 AM. In another match Pakistan will meet Canada  at 2.30 P.M. at the Prem Dasa Stadium, Colombo.
