सरकार ने हसन अली के विवादास्पद पासपोर्ट के मुद्दे पर प्रवर्तन निदेशालय को पुद्दुचेरी के उपराज्यपाल एम इकबाल सिंह से पूछताछ करने की अनुमति दे दी है। प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय के प्रवक्ता ने आज इस मंजूरी की पुष्टि की। कांग्रेस सांसद के रूप में श्री सिंह ने १९९७ में पासपोर्ट हासिल करने के लिए हसन अली के नाम की कथित सिफारिश की थी। श्री सिंह ने कल गृह मंत्री पी चिदम्बरम से भेंट करके अपनी स्थिति स्पष्ट की। उन्होंने संवाददाताओं से कहा कि वे उपराज्यपाल के पद से इस्तीफा नहीं दे रहे हैं। दूसरी ओर कांग्रेस पार्टी ने कहा है कि यह श्री सिंह पर निर्भर है कि वे इस्तीफा दें या न दें।

महाराष्ट्र के रत्नागिरी जिले में शिवसेना के बंद के दौरान आज हिंसक घटनाएं हुईं। विरोध प्रदर्शनकारियों ने पथराव किया, टायर जलाये और सड़कों पर बाधाएं खड़ी कीं। ये बंद कल रत्नागिरी जिले के नातेगांव में प्रदर्शनकारियों द्वारा एक थाने को आग लगाने के बाद पुलिस फायरिंग में एक व्यक्ति की मृत्यु के विरोध में किया जा रहा है। ये प्रदर्शनकारी प्रस्तावित जैतापुर परमाणु बिजली संयंत्र का विरोध कर रहे हैं। इस मामले को लेकर आज महाराष्ट्र विधानसभा में भी हंगामा हुआ। विपक्षी सदस्यों ने गोली चलाये जाने की घटना पर बहस की मांग की। इस समय बहस हो रही है।मुंबई से हमारी संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि रत्नागिरी जिले में स्थिति अब भी तनावपूर्ण है।

नागरिक उड्डयन महानिदेशालय में वैमानिक सुरक्षा के विवादास्पद निदेशक आर एस पासी को ड्यूटी से हटा दिया गया है। हमारे संवाददाता ने सरकारी सूत्रों के हवाले से खबर दी है कि श्री पासी ने विमान चालक का जाली लाइसेंस हासिल कराने में अपनी पुत्री गरिमा पासी की कथित रूप से मदद की। पासी की पुत्री स्पाइस जेट में पायलट थी और उसने लाइसेंस प्राप्त करने के लिए कथित रूप से जाली दस्तावेज इस्तेमाल किए। स्पाइस जेट ने डीजीसीए प्रमुख को लिखा था कि पासी की बेटी को अतिविशिष्ट स्थितियों के तहत पायलट की नौकरी दी गई। इसी चिट्ठी के बाद पासी के खिलाफ अनुशासन की कार्रवाई की गई। हमारे संवाददाता ने यह भी खबर दी है कि डीजीसीए के आधे दर्जन से ज्यादा ऐसे वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों को भी कारण बताओ नोटिस दिए गए हैं, जिनके बच्चे विमान कंपनियों में नौकरी कर रहे हैं।इस समय डीजीसीए के तीन दल विमान उड़ाने की शिक्षा देने वाले देश के कम से कम ४० स्कूलों के खातों की जांच कर रहे हैं। सरकार पहले ही चेतावनी दे चुकी है कि जो संस्थान विमान चालन के लाइसेंस देने के लिए कागजपत्रों में जालसाजी करते हुए पाए जाएंगे उन्हें तुरंत बंद किया जा सकता है।
घटनाक्रम पर प्रतिक्रिया व्यक्त करते हुए नागरिक उड्डयन मंत्री वायलार रवि ने कहा कि ऐसे स्कूलों के खिलाफ आपराधिक मुकदमें चलाने की कार्रवाई शुरू की जाएगी। उन्होंने फिर कहा कि सरकार विमान चालकों के जाली कागजात के मुद्दे को कतई सहन नहीं करेगी।

सामाजिक आयोजनों के दौरान बर्बाद होने वाले खाने पर चिंता व्यक्त करते हुए सरकार ने कहा है कि वह इस समस्या से निपटने के लिए पाकिस्तानी और ऐसे दूसरे कानूनों का अध्ययन करेगी। खाद्य और उपभोक्ता मामलों के मंत्री के० वी० थॉमस ने यह जानकारी देते हुए कल नई दिल्ली में पत्रकारों से कहा कि उन्हें इस मसले से निपटने के बारे में बहुत से सुझाव मिले हैं। उनके मंत्रालय द्वारा इस मुद्दे पर बनाई गई समिति की नई दिल्ली में बैठक भी बुलाई गई। समिति के सदस्यों ने इस बारे में कुछ सुझाव भी दिये हैं। श्री थॉमस ने कहा कि पाकिस्तान की तरह भारत में भी शादी ब्याह के मौके पर एक ही पकवान बनाने के सुझाव पर विचार किया जा सकता है या रोटी और चावल के साथ एक सब्जी परोसने पर भी सोचा जा सकता है।

सरकार विकलांग व्यक्तियों के बौद्धिक विकास के लिए एक विशेष राष्ट्रीय योजना पर काम कर रही है। यह जानकारी नई दिल्ली में अनुसूचित जाति, जनजाति, विकलांग व्यक्तियों और महिलाओं के शैक्षिक विकास के सम्मेलन की अध्यक्षता करते हुए मानव संसाधन विकास मंत्री कपिल सिब्बल ने दी। उन्होंने कहा कि इस विशेष योजना से सामान्य शिक्षा पर कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ेगा। उन्होंने ऐसे बच्चों के लिए रिहायशी स्कूल और कॉलेज स्थापित करने पर भी जोर दिया। श्री सिब्बल ने बताया कि उनका मंत्रालय अगली पंचवर्षीय योजना में सूचना टैक्नॉलॉजी के माध्यम से राष्ट्रीय शिक्षा मिशन को और बढ़ावा देगा। उन्होंने कहा कि नई योजना में स्कूल शिक्षा से लेकर उच्च शिक्षा को शामिल किया जाएगा। ---------
केन्द्र सरकार देश में सहकारी संस्थाओं के पुनर्गठन और उन्हें फिर से अपने पेशें पर खड़े होने में मदद देने की एक नई योजना पर काम कर रही है। इस प्रस्तावित योजना का उद्देश्य, ठीक हो सकने की संभावना वाली बीमार सहकारी समितियों को पुनर्जीवित करने के लिए विशेष कोष स्थापित करना है। नई दिल्ली में कल राज्यों के सहकारिता मंत्रियों का सम्मेलन होगा जिसमें प्रस्तावित कोष के बारे में विचार विमर्श किया जाएगा। साथ ही इन संस्थाओं की स्वायत्तता बनाए रखने और इनके कामकाज में लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था सुनिश्चित करने के तौर तरीकों पर भी चर्चा की जाएगी। सम्मेलन का उद्घाटन कृषि मंत्री शरद पवार करेंगे।
सम्मेलन में लघुकालीन सहकारी ऋण ढांचे को पुनर्जीवित करने के पैकेज को लागू करने के बारे में विचार विनिमय होगा। प्रोफेसर ए वैद्यनाथन की अध्यक्षता में गठित कार्यबल की सिफारिशों के आधार पर १३ हजार पांच सौ करोड़ रूपए से अधिक के पैकेज को मंजूरी दी गई है। इस पैकेज को लागू करने के लिए अब तक २५ राज्य नाबार्ड के साथ सहमति ज्ञापन पर हस्ताक्षर कर चुके हैं।

उत्तर प्रदेश में लखीमपुर खीरी जिले में खेतों में आग लगने से छह लोगों को मौत हो गई और तीन घायल हो गए। यह आग जिले के २४ से अधिक गांवों में फैल गई और अनेक मकानों को खाक कर दिया। तीन घायलों को स्थानीय अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया है। सरकारी प्रवक्ता ने हमारे संवाददाता को बताया कि मुख्यमंत्री मायावती ने मृतकों के परिजनों को एक-एक लाख रूपये की सहायता देने की घोषणा की है। मुख्यमंत्री ने जिला प्रशासन से, पीड़ित परिवारों के रहने के लिए वैकल्पिक व्यवस्था करने को कहा है। आग की घटना में करीब तीन सौ परिवार प्रभावित हुए हैं। प्रारंभिक अनुमान के अनुसार आग से तीस लाख की सम्पत्ति और फसलों को नुकसान हुआ है। ---------
आयकर विभाग ने विधानसभा चुनाव वाले पांच राज्यों में लोगों से बेहिसाब २२ करोड़ रूपये की नकदी बरामद की है। केन्द्रीय प्रत्यक्षकर बोर्ड के अध्यक्ष सुधीर चंद्रा ने कल नई दिल्ली में संवाददाताओं को बताया कि बोर्ड और निर्वाचन आयोग के संयुक्त प्रयासों से इतनी बड़ी मात्रा में नकदी बरामद की गई। यह पैसा उन लोगों से बरामद किया गया जो संबंधित अधिकारियों के सामने धन के स्रोत और उद्देश्य का खुलासा नहीं कर पाए। हालांकि श्री चंद्रा ने स्पष्ट किया कि किसी राजनीतिक पार्टी या उसके एजेंट से कोई पैसा बरामद नहीं किया गया । उन्होंने बताया कि इस बरामदगी के बाद कई जगहों पर छापे मारे गये और ५० से ६० करोड़ रूपये की कर चोरी का पता लगाया गया। कर चोरी करने वालों के खिलाफ मामले दर्ज किये गये हैं। ---------
पांच लाख रूपये तक की सालाना आय वाले करदाताओं को अब आयकर रिटर्न भरने की जरूरत नहीं है। सरकार के इस नये कदम से करीब ७० से ८० लाख लोगों को राहत मिलेगी। केन्द्रीय प्रत्यक्ष कर बोर्ड के अध्यक्ष सुधीर चंद्रा ने नई दिल्ली में संवाददाताओं को बताया कि सरकार जून की शुरूआत में इस नये प्रावधान की अधिसूचना जारी करेगी जिसके तहत पांच लाख रूपये सालाना तक की आय वाले वेतनभोगी लोगों को रिटर्न भरने से छूट दी जाएगी। श्री चंद्रा ने बताया कि पांच लाख रूपये तक की आय वाले वेतनभोगी लोग यदि आयकर कटौती की वापसी चाहते हैं तो उन्हें रिटर्न भरनी पड़ेगी। आयकर रिटर्न दाखिल करने की प्रक्रिया सरल बनाने की दिशा में वित्त मंत्रालय ने आयकर रिटर्न के आसान फार्म-सहज और सुगम जारी किये हैं। इससे वेतनभोगी कर्मचारियों और छोटे व्यापारियों को सुविधा होगी।
सीबीडीटी अध्यक्ष ने बताया कि सहज और सुगम फॉर्मों के जरिये इलैक्ट्रानिक रिटर्न दाखिल करने की प्रणाली शुरू करने के प्रयास किए जा रहे हैं। सहज फार्म वेतन भोगी लोगों के लिए है जबकि अनुमानित कराधान के दायरे में आने वाले छोटे व्यापारी और पेशेवर लोग सुगम फार्म के जरिए रिटर्न भर सकते हैं। श्री चंद्रा ने बताया कि पेंशन, लाभांश, ब्याज और संपत्ति के जरिए होने वाली आय का रिर्टन भरने वाले वरिष्ठ नागरिकों के दस्तावेजों की जांच नहीं की जाएगी। सरकार ने आयकर प्रयोजन के लिए वरिष्ठ नागरिकों की आयुसीमा ६५ वर्ष से घटाकर ६० वर्ष कर दी है।

भारत और सउदी अरब, सउदी अरब में काम कर रहे लगभग बीस लाख भारतीय कामगारों की हालत सुधारने के लिए एक समझौता ज्ञापन तैयार कर रहे हैं। ये बात विदेश राज्यमंत्री ई अहमद ने रियाद में पत्रकारों को बताई। उन्होंने कहा कि इस समझौते में कामगारों से जुड़े मुद्दे इस तरह से सुलझाये जाएंगे, जिससे मजदूरों और मालिकों दोनों को फायदा हो। उन्होंने ये भी बताया कि सउदी अरब भारतीय कामगारों के लिए बीमा योजना शुरू करने की योजना बना रहा है।

सरकार ने कहा है कि वह सोमालिया के समुद्री डकैतों के चंगुल से भारतीय नाविकों को छुड़ाने में कोई कसर नहीं रख छोड़ेगी। प्रवासी भारतीय कार्य मंत्री वायलार रवि ने आज नई दिल्ली में कहा कि सरकार उचित फैसला लेगी और तत्काल कार्रवाई करेगी। इससे पहले श्री रवि ने जोर देकर कहा कि सरकार नाविकों की रिहाई के लिए समुद्री डकैतों के साथ कोई सौदा नहीं करेगी और उन पर कड़ी कार्रवाई करने में नहीं हिचकेगी। भारतीय नौसेना अदन की खाड़ी से डकैतों को दूर रखने के लिए अंतर्राष्ट्रीय समुद्री क्षेत्र में पहले ही गश्त लगा रही है।

उधर, सोमालिया के विदेशमंत्री मोहम्मद अब्दुल्लाही उमर ने दुनिया की ताकतों से आग्रह किया है कि समुद्री लूटपाट की समस्या से निपटने की कोशिश करने के बजाय जमीन पर लूटपाट के मूल कारणों को खत्म करने पर ज्यादा ध्यान दें। दुबई में समुद्री डकैती रोधी सम्मेलन में सोमालिया के विदेशमंत्री ने कहा कि तमाम देशों की कोशिशों के बावजूद समुद्री लुटेरे अपने इरादों में सफल हो रहे हैं क्योंकि वे सोमालिया के समुद्र से हटकर दूसरी जगहो ंपर अपनी हरकतों को अंजाम देते है । उन्होंने कहा कि सोमालिया में मजबूत सरकार नहीं है और न ही पर्याप्त सेना और पुलिस बल मौजूद हैं जिसके कारण समुद्री लूटपाट की घटनाएं बढ़ रही हैं। उन्होंने दूसरे देशों से आग्रह किया कि सोमालिया के सुरक्षा बलों को मजबूत करने के लिए आर्थिक मदद करें और देश में सरकार की पकड़ मजबूत करने में सहयोग दें । श्री उमर ने कहा कि सरकार लूटपाट से निपटने की व्यापक रणनीति पर काम करने को तैयार है लेकिन उसे अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मदद की जरूरत है।कई देशों ने सोमालिया के समुद्र में अपने युद्धपोत तैनात किए हुए हैं ताकि व्यापारिक जहाजों पर लुटेरों के हमले रोके जा सकें। अमरीका, फ्रांस और संयुक्त अरब अमीरात की नौसेना ने समुद्री लुटेरों का सख्ती से मुकाबला किया है ।

पश्चिमी लीबिया में एक जहाज में करीब एक हजार लोगों को बचाया गया है। इसकी मदद से लोग भारी लड़ाई वाले शहर मिसराता के बंदरगाह से सुरक्षित बाहर निकाले जा सके। इस बीच मुअम्मर गद्दाफी का कहना है कि वे मिसराता में संयुक्त राष्ट्र मिशन को आने देंगे। ब्रिटेन के अधिकारियों ने कहा है कि वे मिसराता से अन्य पांच हजार विदेशी कामगारों को निकालने की तैयारी कर रहे हैं। लोगों को निकालने की यह प्रक्रिया एक समझौते के तहत शुरू हुई है ताकि त्रिपोली और अन्य शहरों तक मानवीय मदद पहुंचाई जा सके।
संयुक्त राष्ट्र मानवीय सहायता की प्रमुख वैलेरी अमोस के मुताबिक मिसराता में हालात बेहद चिन्ताजनक हैं। गद्दाफी समर्थक सेनाओं की शहर पर बमबारी जारी है। एक डाक्टर के मुताबिक पिछले छह हफ्तों से हो रही बमबारी के चलते मिसराता में अब तक एक हजार लोग मारे जा चुके हैं।

नाइजीरिया में चुनाव आयोग ने राष्ट्रपति गुडलक जोनाथन को विजयी घोषित किया है। उन्हें करीब ५७ प्रतिशत वोट मिले हैं। राष्ट्रपति ने चुनाव के बाद हो रही हिंसा को अनावश्यक बताते हुए शांति बनाए रखने की अपील की है। नाइजीरिया के उत्तरी इलाके में हिंसक प्रदर्शन हुए हैं, जिनमें विद्रोहियों ने घरों और चर्चों को आग लगा दी।
विद्रोही युवा राष्ट्रपति गुडलक जोनाथन के चुनावों में विजयी होने के खिलाफ प्रदर्शन कर रहे थे। वोटों की गिनती के अनुसार दक्षिणी नाइजर डेल्टा के जोनाथन ने उत्तरी क्षेत्र के मुहम्मद बुहारी को भारी अंतर से हरा दिया है।

The government has given its approval for the questioning of the Puducherry Lt. Governor M Iqbal Singh by the Enforcement Directorate over his alleged links to controversial businessman Hasan Ali. Ali was arrested last month for tax evasion and money laundering. The Prime Minister's Office sanctioned the questioning of Iqbal Singh this morning. Ali has been accused of stashing upto 8 billion dollars' worth of black money in foreign bank accounts. He is also being investigated for links with the international arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi. Our correspondent reports that,in 1997, Mr Singh was a Rajya Sabha MP from the Congress party when he allegedly helped expedite a passport application for Ali. In a letter of explanation sent to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram last week, Mr. Singh said that he asked for the passport to be granted on humanitarian grounds because he had been told that Mr. Ali needed to travel abroad urgently to visit his brother, who was sick. Mr. Singh wrote that he did not know Mr Hasan personally, but intervened at the request of Amalendu Pandey, a Congress leader from Bihar. He also met the Home Minister Mr. P. Chidambaram yesterday and explained his position. The Congress party, however, said that it is unto Mr. Singh to decide his resignation.

The controversial director of air safety at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), R.S. Passi, has been relieved of his duties. Our correspondent quoting official sources reports that Mr Passi is alleged to have helped his daughter Garima Passi to obtain a fake pilot license. Passi's daughter was a pilot with a Low Cost Carrier Spice jet and was sacked as she was alleged to have fudged her documents for procuring a pilot's license. The disciplinary action was taken after Spice Jet wrote to DGCA chief that Passi's daughter got a job as pilot with the airline under extraordinary circumstances. Our correspondent reports, show cause notices have also been issued to more than half a dozen senior DGCA officials whose children are employed with the airlines. Three DGCA teams are currently auditing at least 40 flying schools across the country and the government has already warned the institutes that if they were found fudging records to grant pilot licences, they be closed down immediately. Reacting to the development, civil aviation minister Vyalar Ravi said criminal prosecution will be initiated against flying schools. Mr Ravi reiterated that the government will have zero tolerance on this fake pilot issue.

Perturbed over huge wastage of food during social events in the country, the government says it will study the relevant law of Pakistan and similar other legislations to deal with the problem. Food and Consumer Affairs Minister K V Thomas told reporters in New Delhi yesterday that the ministry had received many suggestions to control food wastage at social functions. A meeting of a panel set up by the ministry was convened in New Delhi to discuss the issue. N C Saxena who is a member of the panel said India can take a look at the Pakistan's one-dish law on weddings, which limits menu to one vegetable and chappati or rice. Mr. Sudershan Aggarwal and Mr Rajiv Sukhla who are also members of the panel suggested revival of the Guest Control Order, which limits number of dishes that can be served on weddings and also the number of guests. The minister said that to stop the ostentatious attitude, a committee will be constituted to study recommendations of the members .They will later propose ways to contain food wastage in big events. The issue of wastage of food grains has been at the centre of discussions at the national level for quite some time now. When the reports of food grains rotting for want of storage came up to the Supreme Court last year, it directed the Government to distribute it among the BPL families. After that the issue figured prominently in the discussions in Parliament with Government announcing a slew of measures to enhance storage capacity of food grains. With the expectations of a bumper crop, the storage may be a challenge again. But at the same time it is a fact that about 15-20 per cent of food is being wasted at social gatherings. The condition of national-level volleyball player Arunima Sinha alias Sonu, is stable. The player's leg had to be amputated by the doctors after the was being pushed out of a speeding train. The doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS, New Delhi, where she is undergoing treatment, said this today. AIIMS Trauma Centre chief Dr M C Misra said, she had a good sleep last night. Dr. Misra said she had to be given blood and plasma as her hemoglobin level had fallen drastically. Dr. Misra said, he and his team of doctors are planning to open up the leg wound under anesthesia to decide the next course of action. She was admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre yesterday night after it was detected that her amputated left leg had been infected. The Union Sports Ministry shifted her to AIIMS for better treatment. The Sports Minister Mr. Ajay Maken yesterday met the player at the Chattrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical Hospital in Lucknow and shifted her after her family's consent was obtained.The Ministry will bear all the expenses for her treatment.

The city is witnessing a total shutdown in response to the Shiv Sena's call for bandh over Monday's firing incident. The crisis had flared up when 500 people demonstrating near the proposed nuclear plant site at Madban village torched a police station in the neighbouring Nate village. The Jharkhand police along with the CRPF will not allow any new strongholds of the Naxals or Maoists in the State. The Maoists are now searching for new areas after losing their grip over many areas in the State as a consequence of increased police action. The government is working on a Special National Plan of Skill Development for People with Disabilities. This was revealed by the Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal after chairing the first meeting in New Delhi of the Round Table Conference on Educational Development of Women, SCs/STs and People with Disabilities. Mr. Sibal said that the special plan will not affect normal education. He also underlined the need for setting up of residential schools and colleges for the disadvantaged in order to address the issues of lack of access and quality. The Minister informed that his Ministry will expand the scope of the National Education Mission through information technology in the next five year plan. He said that the new plan will include school education from its current mandate of higher education.

The Centre is working on a new scheme for rehabilitation and reconstruction of cooperative institutions in the country. Pakistan today test fired a newly developed short-range surface-to-surface missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. A Pakistani Millitary statement said, the the Hatf-9 missile, Nasr with a range of 60 kilometers can carry nuclear warheads of appropriate yield with high accuracy. It said, the multi-tube ballistic missile system had been developed to add deterrence value to Pakistan's strategic weapons development programme at shorter ranges. The statement added, the missile test, conducted at an undisclosed location, was successful. Pakistan routinely tests what it claims are indigenously developed missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, with its arsenal including short, medium and long-range missiles.

India and Saudi Arabia will chalk out a memorandum of understanding for the welfare of 20 Lakh Indians in the country. This was stated by State Minister for External Affairs E. Ahmed while talking to reporters in Riyadh. He said that such an agreement will resolve labour issues and look after the interests of both the employer and employee. The Indian-American physician Siddhartha Mukherjee's acclaimed book on cancer, 'The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer,' has won the prestigious 2011 Pulitzer prize in the general non-fiction category. According to the Pulitzer citation, the book by the New York-based cancer physician and researcher is an elegant inquiry, at once clinical and personal, into the long history of an insidious disease that, despite treatment breakthroughs, still bedevils medical science. The Pulitzer for general non-fiction is awarded to a distinguished and appropriately documented book of nonfiction by an American author that is not eligible for consideration in any other category. It carries a 10,000 dollar award. India-born Mukherjee is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University and a Staff Cancer Physician at Columbia University Medical Centre. In his book, Mukherjee recounts centuries of discoveries, setbacks, victories and deaths, told through the eyes of his predecessors and peers, training their wits against an infinitely resourceful adversary that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out war against cancer.

The head of NATO's military operations in Libya has accused forces loyal to Colonel Gaddafi of hiding in hospitals and firing on civilians from the roofs of mosques in the rebel-held city of Misrata. The Lieutenant-General, Charles Bouchard,said pro-Gaddafi forces have placed armoured vehicles inside schools, removed their uniforms on occasions and employed what he called underhand and immoral tactics in their seven-week drive to dislodge the rebels from the city.
Almost a thousand people evacuated from the besieged Libyan city of Misrata, have arrived in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi. They have been brought in on a ship chartered by the aid agency, "The International Organization for Migration", which says thousands more are waiting to be rescued. Britain has pledged to provide more than three million dollars for the evacuation of five thousand people from Misrata.

The Gulf foreign ministers will meet with a Yemeni government delegation in Abu Dhabi today to discuss an initiative to end the standoff between protesters and Yemeni Government. According to a statement of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Abu Dhabi, it will host an extraordinary meeting to resolve the issue. Earlier, GCC foreign ministers met in Riyadh with a Yemeni opposition delegation seeking details on a plan for Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s departure. On 10th April, the GCC appealed to Saleh to announce the transfer of his powers to the vice-president. Yemeni President Saleh is facing protests since January this year calling for his departure. GCC member countries are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Government today said that it will not leave any stone unturned to rescue the abducted sailors from Somali pirates. Overseas Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi today said in New Delhi that that Government will take the correct decision and immediate action. Earlier stressing on the fact that Government will not bargain with pirates for the release of the sailors, he has said that the government will not hesitate to take a tougher action to curb the piracy in the high seas. Indian navy is already patrolling the international maritime zone to keep off the pirates in the Gulf of Aden.

A hardcore Maoist from West Bengal, facing over 30 cases including murder, abduction and treason, and two others were arrested in Mayurbhanj district of Orissa. Police said that the rebel was picked up during a joint raid last night on a house by CRPF and police from a village, 45 km from Mayurbhanj. Superintendent of Police Dayal Gangwar told reporters that the Maoist, identified as Khokan Mahato (35) alias Khagen a village in West Midnapore district in West Bengal, was an area commander.

Fidel Castro confirmed he had resigned from the top leadership of the Cuba Communist Party. Castro said this in an article published today, after his party approved a draft of economic reforms. Castro, 84, had served as first secretary in the Central Committee of the party, which underpins the country's Communist government since the party's creation in 1965. Fidel said he had handed over the functions of the party head to Raul Castro when he ceded power to his brother because of his own declining health in 2006, though he retained the first secretary title. Scientists have developed a new injection that could limit the devastating consequences of heart attacks and strokes, a breakthrough which they say could soon revolutionise treatments for cardiovascular diseases. An international team led by researchers at University of Leicester said their achievement has also potential usage in transplant surgery. Lead researcher Professor Wilhelm Schwaeble said that the injection will significantly reduce the tissue damage and impaired organ function that occurs following ischemia in widespread and serious conditions such as heart attacks and strokes.
