 पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा चुनाव के तीसरे चरण में कोलकाता और उत्तरी तथा दक्षिणी चौबीस परगना जिलों की ७५ विधानसभा सीटों पर मतदान चल रहा है।  पहले पांच घंटों में ५५ प्रतिशत से अधिक मतदान रिकार्ड किया गया। राज्य के निर्वाचन अधिकारी सुनील गुप्ता ने बताया कि अब तक किसी बड़ी अप्रिय घटना का समाचार नहीं है। तकनीकी खराबी के कारण ७३ इलैक्ट्रोनिक वोटिंग मशीनें बदली गईं।

 उधर, बिहार में पंचायत चुनाव के तीसरे चरण में कड़ी सुरक्षा के बीच ५४ ब्लॉकों की ८७५ ग्राम पंचायतों के लिए शांतिपूर्वक वोट डाले जा रहे हैं। मतदान शाम पांच बजे तक चलेगा, हालांकि नक्सल प्रभावित इलाकों में तीन बजे तक ही मतदान होगा। ५२ लाख से अधिक मतदाता ८७ हजार ९२ उम्मीदवारों के चुनावी भाग्य का फैसला करेंगे। तेज गर्मी की वजह से मतदान की गति धीमी है। हमारे पटना संवाददाता ने बताया है कि राज्य के किसी भी हिस्से से हिंसा की किसी घटना की खबर नही है। सारन जि+ले में चुनाव में धांधली के आरोप में एक चुनाव अधिकारी को गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया है। बेगुसराय जि+ले में एक गश्ती मजिस्ट्रेट को शराब पिये होने के कारण गिरफ्तार किया गया है। मधुबनी में असामाजिक तत्वों ने सुरक्षाकर्मियो से दो राइफलें  छीन लीं हैं। एहतियात के तौर पर तीन सौ से अधिक लोग गिरफ्तार किये गये हैं। इनके पास से लगभग १८ हजार रुपये बरामद हुए हैं। पंचायत चुनाव के शेष सात चरण १८ मई को पूरे हो जाएंगे। चौथे चरण का मतदान ३० अपै्रल को होगा।

 एयर इंडिया ने पायलटों की हड़ताल अवैध घोषित कर दी है। नागर विमानन मंत्रालय के एक प्रवक्ता ने हमारे संवाददाता को बताया है कि एयर इंडिया प्रबंधन ने भारतीय वाणिज्यिक पायलट संघ की हड़ताल करने के कारण मान्यता समाप्त कर दी है। आज सुबह दिल्ली और मुम्बई में इसके कार्यालय सील कर दिये गए।
 एयर इंडिया के अनुसार लगभग बीस उड़ानों को रद्द करना पड़ा हैं। इनमें दिल्ली-रायपुर वाया नागपुर ४६९, दिल्ली काठमांडु २१४, काठमांडु-दिल्ली १२६, दिल्ली-बैंकॉक, दिल्ली-श्रीनगर और दिल्ली-लेह की उड़ाने शामिल हैं। मुम्बई के दो उड़ानों के यात्रियों को एक ही विमान से भेजा गया। कल आधी रात से शुरू हुई हड़ताल के कारण कई अन्य उड़ानों में भी देरी हुई। पायलटों और एयर इंडिया प्रबंधन के बीच वार्ता भंग हो जाने के बाद हड़ताल शुरू हुई। पायलट वेतन और काम की परिस्थितियों में सुधार के अलावा कंपनी में कथित घोटालों और मुनाफा देने वाले मार्गों से सेवाएं हटाने या रद्द करने की सीबीआई जांच की मांग कर रहे हैं।
हमारी संवाददाता ने बताया है कि पायलटों की हड़ताल से यात्रियों को काफी परेशानियों का सामना करना पड़ रहा है।

 इस बीच, एयर इंडिया प्रबंधन ने पायलटों से संयम बरतने और गैर जिम्मेदाराना व्यवहार न करने की अपील की है क्योंकि विचार विमर्श अभी चल रहा है। एयर इंडिया के प्रवक्ता ने बताया कि सरकार नागर विमानन मंत्रालय और इससे जुड़े सभी लोग  इस मुद्दे को हल करने के प्रयास में गंभीरता से जुड़े हैं। उन्होंने बताया कि न्यायमूर्ति धर्माधिकारी की समिति ने इस मामले में सोमवार से काम करना शुरू कर दिया है और तीन महीने के भीतर वह अपनी सिफारिशें दे देंगी।
 इस बीच, एयर इंडिया की हड़ताल के कारण निजी एयरलाइनों ने मुम्बई-दिल्ली क्षेत्र में यात्री किराये में पचास प्रतिशत तक बढ़ोतरी कर दी है।

 भू-विज्ञान राज्य मंत्री अश्विनी कुमार ने कहा है कि सरकार देश में भूकंप की चेतावनी का बेहतर तंत्र विकसित कर रही है। नई दिल्ली में पत्रकारों से बातचीत में उन्होंने कहा कि महाराष्ट्र के भूकंप की आशंका वाले कोयना इलाके में आठ किलोमीटर की गहराई तक ड्रिल करने की प्रक्रिया शुरू की गई है ताकि भूकंप के समय जमीन के नीचे होने वाले परिवर्तनों को समझा जा सके। उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार ने इस सिलसिले में अंतर्राष्ट्रीय ड्रिलिंग कार्यक्रम के साथ एक समझौता ज्ञापन पर हस्ताक्षर किये हैं। श्री अश्विनी कुमार ने कहा कि पूरी परियोजना पर लगभग तीन अरब रुपये खर्च होने का अनुमान है और इसके लिए सरकार बारहवीं पंचवर्षीय योजना में प्रावधान रखेगी। उन्होंनें कहा कि जर्मनी ने इस पहल को पूरी मदद देने का वायदा किया है। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि सरकार की इस पहल से वैज्ञानिकों को भूकंप का ठीक समय पर अध्ययन करने का मौका मिलेगा।

 जल संसाधन मंत्री सलमान खुर्शीद ने कहा है कि सरकार देश के किसानों को बेहतर सिंचाई सुविधाएं मुहैया कराने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध है। नई दिल्ली में आज संवाददाताओं के साथ बातचीत में श्री खुर्शीद ने कहा कि केन्द्र सरकार नदी थाला सिंचाई नीतियों को चुस्त-दुरूस्त बनाने के उद्देश्य से अगले महीने के आरंभ में राज्य सरकारों के साथ बैठक करेगी। उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार किसानों के लाभ के लिए जलाशयों की मरम्मत और नवीकरण के काम में तेजी लाएगी।

 सरकार देश में बिजली की मांग और आपूर्ति के अंतर को पूरा करने के लिए बिजली उत्पादन क्षमता बढ़ाने के सभी संभव प्रयास कर रही है।
दक्षिण एशिया में बिजली क्षेत्र में निवेश के अवसर बढ़ाने के बारे में आयोजित सम्मेलन में बिजली राज्य मंत्री के सी वेणुगोपाल ने बताया कि देश में स्थापित क्षमता १ लाख ७२ हजार मेगावॉट है लेकिन मांग से ८ प्रतिशत कम है और ज्यादा खपत के समय यह अंतर १० प्रतिशत हो जाता है। उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार को विश्वास है कि ११वीं योजना का ६२ हजार मेगावॉट अतिरिक्त क्षमता बनाने का लक्ष्य पूरा हो जायेगा।

 पुदुचेरी में ऑल इंडिया अन्ना डी एम के पार्टी के नेतृत्व में विपक्ष के सुबह से शाम तक के बंद का आंशिक असर हुआ है। विपक्ष केन्द्र सरकार से मांग कर रहा है कि उपराज्यपाल इकबाल सिंह को वापस बुलाया जाए। उसका कहना है कि उपराज्यपाल, कर चोरी के आरोप में जेल में बंद हसन अली के साथ संबंधों सहित कई विवादों में कथित रूप से शामिल हैं।
 बंद का आम जन-जीवन पर कोई असर नहीं पड़ा है। राज्य परिवहन की बसें सामान्य रूप से चल रहीं हैं, हालांकि निजी बसें नहीं चल रहीं। कई दुकानें और व्यापारिक प्रतिष्ठान बंद हैं लेकिन सरकारी कार्यालयों और बैंकों में अन्य दिनों की तरह काम चल रहा है। वरिष्ठ पुलिस अधीक्षक अतुल खट्टर ने हमारे संवाददाता को बताया कि अब तक किसी अप्रिय घटना का कोई समाचार नही है।
उपराज्यपाल इकबाल सिह से कल प्रवर्तन निदेशालय के अधिकारियों ने पूछताछ की और पूरी प्रक्रिया की वीडियोग्राफी की गई।

 इस बीच, पुडुचेरी के उपराज्यपाल इकबाल सिंह ने आज नई दिल्ली में गृहमंत्री पी चिदम्बरम से मुलाकात की। यह मुलाकात प्रवर्तन निदेशालय द्वारा श्री इकबाल सिंह से हसन अली के साथ कथित रूप से संबंध होने के कारण पूछताछ के बाद हुई। मुलाकात के बाद उन्होंने संवाददाता को बताया कि प्रवर्तन निदेशालय के अधिकारियों ने उनसे पूछताछ की है और यह मामला उच्चतम न्यायालय के विचाराधीन है। इकबाल सिंह ने १९९७ में सांसद के रूप में हसन अली को पासपोर्ट देने की सिफारिश की थी। उन्होंने हसन अली को व्यक्तिगत रूप से न जानने के बावजूद पासपोर्ट देने की सिफारिश की थी।

 डीएमके प्रमुख एम करूणानिधि ने  कहा है कि उनकी पार्टी टू जी स्पैक्ट्रम मामले की सच्चाई सामने लाने के लिए कानूनी लड़ाई लडेगी। आज चेन्नई में संवाददाताओं से बातचीत में उन्होंने कहा कि पार्टी के वकील तय करेगें कि कलैग्नार टीवी के सीईओ शरद कुमार और सुश्री कनिमोरि की अग्रिम जमानत के लिए अपील की जाये या नहीं। उन्होंने इस बात का खण्डन किया कि इस मुद्दे के कारण पार्टी को कोई शर्मिंदगी नहीं है। यह पूछे जाने पर कि क्या सुश्री कनिमोरी छह  तारीख को अदालता में पेश होंगी, उन्होंने कहा है कि वे मामले में पूरा सहयोग करेंगी।
 इससे पहले डीएमके अध्यक्ष श्री करूणानिधि की अध्यक्षता में पार्टी की  उच्चस्तरीय कार्यकारी समिति की  बैठक में सुश्री कनिमोरी और शरद कुमार के नाम शामिल किये जाने पर आश्चर्य व्यक्त किया गया।
बैठक के बाद जारी बयान में श्रीलंका का मुद्दा उठाया गया और कहा गया कि यूपीए के मौजूदा सहयोगी दल श्रीलंका में तमिल परिवारों को समान अधिकार दिलाने के लिए केन्द्र सरकार से अनुरोध करेंगी। बयान में मीडिया पर आरोप लगाया गया कि डीएमके की छवि बिगाड़ने के इरादे से मामले को बढ़ा-चढ़ा कर पेश किया जा रहा है। उनकी कोशिश यूपीए गठबंधन को तोड़ने और श्रीकरूणानिधि को अपदस्थ करने की है। बैठक में उच्च डीएमके नेताओं और कनिमोरी ने भी हिस्सा लिया।

 भारतीय जनता पार्टी ने कहा है कि उत्तरप्रदेश विधानसभा चुनाव में यदि पार्टी को बहुमत नहीं मिलता तो वह बजाय किसी अन्य पार्टी से जोड़तोड़ करने के विपक्ष में बैठना पसंद करेगी। उत्तरप्रदेश के फैजाबाद जिले में कल महासंग्राम रैली को संबोधित करते हुए पार्टी अध्यक्ष नितिन गड़करी ने कहा है कि जनता केन्द्र की यूपीए और प्रदेश की मायावती सरकार की गलत नीतियों से त्रस्त है। उन्होंने कहा कि अगर भाजपा सत्ता में आती है, तो विदेशों में जमा कालेधन को तत्काल वापस लाया जाएगा।

 श्री सत्य साईं बाबा को आज आन्ध्रप्रदेश में पुट्टापर्थी में अश्रुपूर्ण विदाई दी गई। आज सुबह प्रशांति निलयम के कुलवंत हॉल में उनके पार्थिव शरीर को साईं मंत्रोंच्चार के बीच समाधि दी गई। दुनियाभर में उनके लाखों भक्तों ने अन्तिम संस्कार की प्रक्रिया को देखा। इस अवसर पर उनके निकट संबंधियों के अलावा पूर्व उप प्रधानमंत्री लालकृष्ण आडवाणी,  आन्ध्रप्रदेश के राज्यपाल नरसिम्हन और पंजाब के राज्यपाल शिवराज पाटिल, आन्ध्रप्रदेश और कर्नाटक के मुख्यमंत्री, भाजपा के वरिष्ठ नेता वैंकेया नायडू , आन्ध्र के पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री चन्दबाबू नायडू  भी अन्तिम संस्कार में उपस्थित थे। बाबा को उसी जगह समाधि दी गई जहां वे प्रवचन देते थे और भजन सुनते थे। अन्तिम संस्कार से पहले बाबा के पार्थिव शरीर को कुछ समय के लिए तिरंगे में लपेटा गया और आन्ध्रप्रदेश के सशस्त्र पुलिस जवानों ने उनके सम्मान में २१ तोपों की सलामी दी। विभिन्न धर्मग्रन्थों के मंत्रों का पाठ किया गया। भजन कीर्तन भी किया गया। मंगल आरती के बाद गणमाण्य और अन्य उपस्थित लोगों को विभूति दी गई।
पवित्र नदियों का जल छिड़का गया। अन्तिम संस्कार सुबह नौ बजे शुरू हुआ और पौने ११ बजे सम्पन्न हो गया।

 मॉरिशस के प्रधानमंत्री नवीनचंद्र रामगुलाम ने कहा है कि समुद्र और समुद्री रास्तों के सुरक्षा खतरों से निपटने के लिए भारत और मॉरिशस मिलकर काम करेंगे। राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा देवी सिंह पाटील के सम्मान में आयोजित रात्रि भोजन में श्री रामगुलाम ने बताया कि २००५ में मॉरिशस में समुद्री व्यापार सुरक्षा क्षमता के निर्माण में सहायता का अनुरोध माना था। उन्होंने कहा कि गहरे समुद्र में लुटेरों का सामना करने के वास्ते अपै्रल २००९ में भारत की मद्द से कमाण्डो बल स्थापित किया गया था। श्री रामगुलाम ने कहा कि भारत सरकार अपने विशेष आर्थिक क्षेत्र में संयुक्त निगरानी के लिए और गैरकानूनी ढंग से मछलियां पकड़ने पर रोक लगाने और समुद्री व्यापार की सुरक्षा बढ़ाने के लिए मॉरिशस में नौसेना के जहाज तैनात करता है। राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा देवी सिहं पाटील ने अपने भाषण में घोषणा की थी कि दोनों देश हिन्दमहासागर में समुद्री लुटेरों से निपटने और सुरक्षा व्यवस्था और मजबूत बनाने के लिए वचनबद्ध हैं।

 मध्यप्रदेश में गेंहू का सरकारी खरीद मूल्य बढ़ाकर बारह सौ सत्तर रुपये प्रति क्विंटल कर दिया गया है। राज्य सरकार ने हाल में केन्द्र सरकार द्वारा घोषित ५० रुपये के अतिरिक्त बोनस की मंजूरी दे दी है। केन्द्र सरकार ने इस साल गेंहू का सरकारी खरीद मूल्य ग्यारह सौ २० रुपये प्रति क्विंटल तय किया था। इसमें मध्य्रप्रदेश सरकार ने अपनी ओर से सौ रुपये प्रति क्विंटल का बोनस जोड़ दिया और किसानों से गेहूं बारह सौ बीस रुपये प्रति क्विंटल की दर से खरीद रही है। हाल में केन्द्र सरकार ने गेंहू की खरीद पर किसानों को ५० रुपये प्रति क्विंटल बोनस देने की घोषणा की थी। इसलिए अब किसानों को प्रति क्विंटल बारह सौ सत्तर रुपये मिलेंगे। जो किसान राज्य सरकार को पहले ही अपना गेंहू बेच चुके उन्हें भी ५० रुपये प्रति क्विंटल की यह बोनस राशि दी जायेगी, जिसे उनके बैंक खातों में जमा कर दिया जायेगा।

 मध्य प्रदेश उच्च न्यायालय ने केन्द्र से कहा है कि भोपाल में यूनियन कार्बाइड के बंद पडे+ कारखाने के आसपास से जहरीले कचरे के निपटारे की समयबद्ध कार्य योजना तैयार करे। इस बारे में एक जनहित याचिका की सुनवाई करते हुए उच्च न्यायालय ने केन्द्र सरकार को निर्देश दिया है कि अगले दो सप्ताह के भीतर विस्तृत जवाब दाखिल करे। एक सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता की जनहित याचिका में कहा गया है कि दिसम्बर १९८४ में गैस रिसाव के बाद से ही कारखाने के आसपास पड़े खतरनाक कचरे के कारण भूजल प्रदूषित हो रहा है और जन स्वास्थ्य को खतरा बना हुआ है।

 सिक्किम उच्च न्यायालय के मुख्य न्यायाधीश पी डी दिनकरन ने उच्चतम न्यायालय में याचिका दायर कर, राज्यसभा द्वारा नियुक्त समिति की निष्पक्षता पर सवाल उठाते हुए उसकी कार्रवाई पर रोक लगाने की मांग की है। यह समिति न्यायमूर्ति दिनकरन पर महाभियोग लगने से पहले उनके कथित गलत आचरण और भ्रष्टाचार के आरोपों की जांच कर रही है। इससे पहले न्यायमूर्ति दिनकरन ने समिति से अनुरोध किया था कि वरिष्ठ वकील पी पी राव को समिति से हटा दिया जाए लेकिन समिति ने इसे नामंजूर कर दिया था। न्यायमूर्ति दिनकरन ने उच्चतम न्यायालय से समिति के इस आदेश को रद्द करने का भी अनुरोध किया है।

 न्यायमूर्ति हरीश चन्द्र मिश्रा और न्यायमूर्ति धुव्र नारायण उपाध्याय को आज झारखंड उच्च न्यायालय में अतिरिक्त न्यायाधीश के पद की शपथ दिलाई गई। उन्हें यह शपथ मुख्य न्यायाधीश न्यायमूर्ति भगवती प्रसाद ने दिलाई।

 झारखंड में धनबाद में अवैध अतिक्रमण का विरोध कर रहे उग्र लोगों को तितर-बितर करने के लिए पुलिस को आज गोली चलानी पड़ी। ये लोग केन्द्र सरकार के सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र के उपक्रम भारत कोकिंग कोलफील्ड की भूमि पर अवैध अतिक्रमण को हटाने के प्रशासन के काम का विरोध कर रहे थे। बड़ी संख्या में लोगों ने प्रशासनकर्मियों पर पथराव शुरू कर दिया जिसमें दो पुलिसकर्मी घायल हो गए। पुलिस को गोलीबारी करनी पड़ी जिससे कुछ लोग घायल हो गए। इसके बाद धनबाद के मुख्य मार्गों पर सभी दुकानें बंद हो गईं और विरोध प्रकट कर रहे लोगों ने बोकारो और धनबाद राजमार्ग बाधित कर दिया।
 कल झारखंड उच्च न्यायालय ने कहा था कि राज्य सरकार अवैध अतिक्रमण हटाने के काम को गंभीरता से नहीं ले रही है और उच्च न्यायालय का एक दल स्वयं जाकर इस काम में हो रही प्रगति को देखेगा।

 दिल्ली के एक घर से तीन दिन पहले अगवा किए गए १८ महीने के बच्चे को पुलिस ने अपहृताओं के चंगुल से छुड़ा लिया है। इस सिलसिले में दो महिलाओं सहित चार लोगों को गिरफ्तार किया गया है। इन दो महिलाओं में घरेलू नौकरानी भी शामिल है जिस पर आरोप है कि उसने इसका अपहरण किया था। आधी रात के समय बदरपुर बार्डर के पास फरीदाबाद से बच्चे को छुड़ाया गया। दिल्ली पुलिस के अनुसार इस वर्ष राजधानी से पांच सौ ५१  बच्चे लापता हुए, जिनमें से केवल इसी महीने में एक सौ ७६ ऐसे मामले सामने आए।

 बम्बई शेयर बाजार का संवेदी सूचकांक शुरूआती कारोबार में ८८ अंक की बढ़त के साथ १९ हजार ६३३ पर खुला। अब से कुछ देर पहले यह ६६ अंक बढ़कर १९ हजार ४७८ पर पहुंच गया। नेशनल स्टॉक एक्सचेंज का निफ्टी भी २७ अंकों की बढत के साथ  ५ हजार ४१ पर था।
 अंतरबैंक मुद्रा बाजार में रूपया डॉलर के मुकाबले आठ पैसे मजबूत हुआ और इसकी कीमत ४४ रूपये ४३ पैसे आंकी गई।
 डंकन फ्लेचर भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम के नये कोच नियुक्त किये गये हैं। जिम्बाब्वे निवासी, ६२ वर्षीय फ्लेचर १९९९ से २००७ तक इंग्लैंड के कोच रहे। उन्हें दो वर्ष के लिए नियुक्त किया गया है। मुंबई में भारतीय क्रिकेट कन्ट्रोल बोर्ड की कार्य समिति की बैठक में आज यह फैसला किया गया।

 संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासचिव ने सीरिया की अन्दरूनी स्थिति पर गहरी चिंता व्यक्त की है। दुबई में आकाशवाणी के संवाददाता को प्राप्त बयान में उन्होंने शांतिपूर्ण प्रदर्शन कर रहे लोगों की मृत्यु की स्वतंत्र जांच की मांग की है।

 अफगानिस्तान की राजधानी काबुल में आज सैनिक हवाईअड्डे पर हुई बहस के बाद सैना के एक अधिकारी ने विदेशी सैनिकों पर गोलियां चला दी। रक्षामंत्रालय के अनुसार इस घटना में कम-से-कम तीन लोग हताहत हो गये पर उन्होंने कोई पक्का ब्यौरा नही दिया। मंत्रालय के प्रवक्ता जनरल मौहम्मद ज+हीर आजि+मी ने बताया कि गोलियां अफगान सेना के एक पायलट ने चलाई जो खुद भी फायरिंग में मारा गया।

 मिस्र से इस्राइल तक प्राकृतिक गैस ले जाने वाली पाइपलाइन में आज एक सशस्त्र गिरोह के हमले के बाद विस्फोट हो गया। मिस्र के सुरक्षा अधिकारियों ने बताया कि हाल के महीनों में इस पाइप लाइन पर यह दूसरा हमला है जो साईनाई के उत्तरी शहर अल अरीष के पास हुआ।

  नेपाल के कपिलवस्तु जिले में स्कूल के लिए तीन मंजिला भवन बनाने के लिए भारत ढाई करोड़ नेपाली रुपये की सहायता देगा। नेपाल-भारत आर्थिक सहयोग कार्यक्रम के तहत इस आशय के समझौता ज्ञापन पर कल काठमाण्डू में भारतीय दूतावास, कपिलवस्तु जिला विकास समिति और महाराजगंज के श्रीजानकी हायर सैकेण्डरी स्कूल ने हस्ताक्षर किए। भारत सरकार की सहायता से कपिलवस्तु जिले में यह तीसरी लघु विकास परियोजना होगी।

In West Bengal, Over 55 per cent voting was recorded till 1 pm in the third phase of Assembly polls in 75 seats covering Kolkata, and North and South 24 Parganas districts. The first five hours of polling has been peaceful.  State Electoral  Officer, Mr. Sunil Gupta said that no major untoward incident has been reported so far. Seventy-three Electronic Voting Machines have been replaced from polling booths due to technical snag.

In Bihar, the third phase of Panchayat elections at 875 gram panchayats in 54 blocks is progressing peacefully amidst tight security. Polling will continue till 5 in the evening. However, in the Naxal affected areas, polling will end at 3 pm. AIR Patna correspondent reports that no incidents of violence have been reported so far from any part of the state. Moderate turnout of voters is reported due to the intense heat. The Panchayat elections will conclude on the 18th of May after the remaining seven more phases. The fourth phase of elections will be held on the 30th of this month.

DMK Chief Mr. Karunanidhi has said that his party will fight a legal battle to bring out the truth in the 2G spectrum case. Speaking to news men in Chennai today, he said that the party’s lawyers will decide on whether anticipatory bail will be moved for Kalaignar TV CEO Mr. Sharad kumar and Ms. Kanimozhi. He also denied that there was any embarrassment for the party in the issue. Asked whether Ms. Kanimozhi will appear on court in the 6th, he said that they would be cooperating. Earlier the DMK’s high level executive committee meeting chaired by its President Mr. Karunanidhi expressed astonishment at the inclusion of the name of Ms. Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar. The statement released after the meeting highlighted the Srilankan issue and said that the alliance parties present in the UPA would impress upon the Centre to ensure equal rights of Tamils living in Srilanka.

In Puducherry, the dawn to dusk bandh called by AIADMK led opposition parties has evoked partial response. The bandh has been called demanding that the centre recall the Lt Governor Mr. Iqbal Singh for his alleged involvement in several controversies including his link with Hasan Ali, jailed for money laundering and tax evasion. Normal life remained unaffected. State run buses were plying as usual, while private bus services were off the road. Several shops and business establishments remained closed, however government offices and banks functioned normally. Senior Supt of Police Mr Atul Kattar told our correspondent that there has been no untoward incident reported so far. Lt Governor Mr. Iqbal Singh was questioned by officials of the Enforcement Directorate yesterday and the entire proceedings were video graphed.

Air India has declared the strike of its pilots illegal. A spokesman of Civil Aviation ministry told our correspondent that the management of the AIR India  has also derecognised the Indian Commercial Pilots Association, ICPA spearheading the strike. The ICPA offices in Delhi and Mumbai were sealed early this morning. According to Air India  around 20 flights have been cancelled since midnight.  These included AI 469 Del-Raipur via Nagpur, AI 214 Del- Kathmandu, AI 216 Kathmandu-Del, Del-Bangkok, Del-Srinagar and Del-Leh. Passengers of two flights to Mumbai were accommodated in one flight. Eight flights from Delhi and 11 from Mumbai were cancelled.  Several other flights are also delayed due to strike which began from midnight. The strike began after the talks between the Pilots and Air India management broke down. The striking pilots are demanding pay parity and better working conditions besides a CBI inquiry into the alleged scams of airlines and cancellation and withdrawal of profitable routes  given away to either private airlines or foreign carriers.  Meanwhile AIR India management has appealed to the pilots to restrain themselves and not go in for the irresponsible act, especially when the process of conciliation is on. A spokesman of AIR India said the Government, the Civil Aviation Ministry and all stakeholders are seriously involved in resolving the issue. He said that the Justice Dharmadhikari committee, formed to look into HR related issues of Air India, has started functioning from this Monday and it is expected to submit its recommendations in three months.  Our Correspondent has filed this report:

A large number of passengers have been stranded at different airports across the country. Some stranded passengers at IGI Airport in the national capital strongly criticised the striking pilots for resorting to this extreme measure. Ria a student who was to go on a pleasure trip to Goa says that the strike has thrown her entire schedule into disarray.

Another stranded passenger Garima is disappointed as she could not make it to her interview to be held in Hyderabad.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has sought a time-bound action plan from the centre for disposal of toxic waste around the defunct Union Carbide plant in Bhopal. Hearing a PIL on the matter, the court directed the centre to file a detailed answer within the next two weeks. The PIL by a social worker had said that hazardous waste lying around the plant is polluting ground water and posing hazard to public health ever since Methyl Isocynate leakage from the Union Carbide plant in December 1984.

In Jharkhand, Police opened fire to disperse  aggressive protestors in Dhanbad, opposing the administration move to remove  encroachments from the land of the Central Government PSU - Bharat Coking Coalfield Ltd. A large number of protestors started throwing stones, in which the SP and the DSP were also injured. Police opened several rounds of fire in which few people have been injured. All the shops on the major roads of Dhanbad have been closed and protestors have blocked the Bokaro- Dhanbad highway. Yesterday, the Jharkhand High Court had observed that Central government PSUs in the state are not serious in removing encroachments from their land, and a team of the High Court itself will inspect the progress made so far in removing the encroachments.

Lt. Governor of Puducherry Iqbal Singh today met Home Minister Mr. P. Chidambaram in New Delhi.  The meeting comes after he was quizzed by the officials of Enforcement Directorate in connection with his reported links with Hasan Ali who is in jail for money laundering and tax evasion.  Coming out after the meeting he told reporters that Enforcement Directorate officials have spoken to him and the matter is before the Supreme Court.  Iqbal Singh as a Member of Parliament in 1997 had recommended issuance of passport to  Hassan Ali. He has stated that he had recommended Ali's name for getting a passport despite not knowing him personally.

In Madhya Pradesh, the minimum support price of wheat has been raised to 1270 rupees per quintal. The state government has given its formal approval to the 50 rupees additional bonus announced by the Central Government recently. The Central Government had announced the minimum support price of wheat as 1120 rupees per quintal this year. On this price, the Madhya Pradesh government has added 100 rupees per quintal as bonus from its side and has been purchasing wheat from the farmers at the rate of 1220 rupees per quintal. Recently the Central Government had taken a decision to give an amount of 50 rupees per quintal as bonus on the support price of wheat. So now the farmers would get 1270 rupees instead of 1220 rupees per quintal. The farmers, who have already sold wheat to the state government, will be paid additionally the difference of 50 rupees per quintal and the amount will be deposited in the bank accounts of the concerned farmers.

The mortal remains of Sathya Sai Baba, were laid to rest this morning at the Sai Kulwant Hall in Prashanthi Nilayam at Puttaparthi in Andhra pradesh. Watched by a galaxy of political personalities and hundreds of his followers, Sathya Sai Baba, whose message of universal love and brotherhood attracted millions of followers across the globe, was buried amidst chanting of Sai mantras. An aura was created in Kulwant Hall when last rites were performed today. R J Ratnakar, the nephew of Sai baba performed the last rites. The head priest of Prashanti Nilayam led him through the rituals. Many television channels relayed the funeral ceremony live throughout the world. In Puttaparthy devotees watched the rituals on big LCD screens. Roads were filled with people watching the live relay. Their faces reflected faith, devotion and hope. They were happy to hear that at 11.45 am the gates of Prashani Nilayam will be opened for public Darshan once again. Since past four days the followers of Sai baba have endured all to catch a glimpse of their mentor and guru who taught them the right path in life. According to Ashram sources more than four lakh people paid their respect to the Baba till now. Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Chandra Ramgoolam has said that New Delhi and Port Louis will continue to work together in responding to security threats at sea and safety of sea lanes. Speaking late last night at a banquet hosted in the honour of the visiting President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, he asserted that India responded to Mauritian request of assistance in building its maritime security capacities in 2005.  He said since April, 2009 a marine Commando force has been set up to combat piracy in the high sea's with India's assistance. Dr. Ramgoolam said Indian government has been deploying naval ships to Mauritius for the joint surveillance of its exclusive economic zone and to combat illegal fishing and strengthen maritime security in the region. Water Resources Minister Salman Khursheed today said that government is committed to provide better irrigation facilities to the farmers in the country. Talking to reporters in New Delhi today Mr Khursheed said the Center will convene a meeting with the state governments early next month to streamline the river basin irrigation policies. He added that the government will accelerate the on going repair and renovation proceedings of the water bodies in order to benefit the farmers. Mr. Khursheed also said that the center is coordinating with the state governments for releasing the grants of the various schemes.

The Government says it is making all out efforts to tap the potential in power generation to meet the demand and supply gap in the country. Speaking at a Conference on Promoting Investment Opportunity in Power Sector in SouthAsia, the Minister of State for Power Mr K.C Venugopal said the country has achieved a significant installed capacity of 1 lakh 72 thousand Mega Watt but the shortages have been in the range of more than 8 per cent in Energy and 10 per cent during the peak hour demands. He said that government is also confident of achieving the set target of 62000 Mega Watt capacity addition during the 11th year plan. Mr Venugopal said, it is estimated that  SAARC power grid linking Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, has the potential to install at least one lakh Mega Watt in the region for common use among its member countries.

But in the morning, the Sensex had opened with a gain of 88 points, or 0.5 per cent, at 19,634, on selective buying in fundamentally strong stocks.

Minister of state for Earth Sciences Ashwani Kumar has said that the government is developing a better warning mechanism for earthquakes in the country. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, he said that a procedure has been initiated to drill eight kilometers deep in the quake-prone Koyna region of Maharashtra in order to understand the changes that occur underground when an earthquake strikes. He added that government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Continental Drilling Programme in this regard.

The 18-month-old boy, who was kidnapped allegedly by a domestic help from his Delhi home three days ago, has been rescued by the police. Four persons including two women were arrested, one of the two women arrested is the maid. Police said, the boy was rescued from Faridabad, near badarpur border around midnight. According to Delhi Police, 551 children have gone missing from the capital this year, with this month alone accounting for 176 such cases.

Sikkim High Court Chief Justice P D Dinakaran facing an inquiry pending motion of removal in Parliament, moved the Supreme court yesterday questioning the fairness of the committee appointed by Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President Hamid Ansari and sought a stay on its proceedings. The trigger for Dinakaran's petition in the apex court alleging breach of principles of natural justice came from the April 24 decision of a committee headed by Supreme Court's Justice Aftab Alam and comprising Karnataka HC Chief Justice J S Khehar and senior Advocate P P Rao. Justice Dinakaran had moved an application before the committee questioning the inclusion of Rao as a member. He alleged that Rao was biased and not suited to be a member of the committee for he had signed a memorandum opposing Justice Dinakaran's purported elevation to the Supreme Court as a judge.

The U.N. secretary-general Ban Ki Moon has expressed serious concern about the situation inside Syria. In a statement received by AIR in Dubai today, he called for an independent inquiry into the deaths of peaceful demonstrators. His comments came after reports quoting witnesses and activists from Syria say that security forces detained large number of people in raids in Daraa and other areas. Our correspondent reports that the 15-nation council is expected to take up the issue of Syria again later today.

The international leaders have escalated their criticism of the Syrian crackdown on protestors with UN secretary general expressing concern about situation in Syria and European leaders including French president and Britain's Foreign Minister calling the current situation unacceptable raising the possibility of sanctions. Britain, France, Germany and Portugal have circulated to the other 11 Security council members a draft statement condemning Syria's violent crackdown against protesters and urging restraint by the government. Even the Arab League said that those in the region demanding freedom and democracy require support, and not shooting with bullets. Meanwhile Syria's U.N. envoy has said that Syria is perfectly capable of conducting its own transparent inquiry into the deaths of anti-government demonstrators and needs no outside assistance. D. A two-day conference on fighting corruption began in Paris today.  The conference is jointly organised by the French Presidency of the G20 and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the OECD. Delegates and government leaders of the top 20 industrialized countries are attending the conference. The OECD said only five of the associate nations had signed the anti-bribery convention to penalize companies or individuals in the past year.

A pipeline carrying natural gas from Egypt to Israel exploded today following an attack by an armed gang. Egyptian security officials said, it was the second attack on the pipeline near the north Sinai town of El Arish in recent months. Authorities closed the valves controlling the flow of gas in an effort to to stem the fire. On Feb. 5, an explosion at a different section of the pipeline severed gas exports for weeks. Egypt exports gas to Israel and Jordan however lately the deals have come under attack because of the low price at which the gas is sold.

India is to provide grant assistance of two crore and fifty lakhs nepali rupees for the construction of a three storied school building in Kapilvastu district of Nepal. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed yesterday by the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, District Development Committee, Kapilvastu and Shree Janaki Higher Secondary School, Maharajgunj, Kapilvastu for providing Government of India grant assistance under Nepal-India Economic Cooperation Programme.

Duncan Fletcher was today appointed India's cricket coach. The 62-year-old Zimbabwean, who coached England from 1999 to 2007, will take over the job for a two-year period. The decision to appoint Fletcher, whose name was doing the rounds as a possible successor to Gary Kirsten, was taken at the BCCI's working committee meeting in Mumbai today. The announcement came as a surprise as the BCCI had given no indication that it would name the coach today itself. BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan told reporters that Fletcher may not join the team in the West Indies as he has some prior commitments. He said, Eric Simmons, who was the bowling coach during Kirsten's tenure, will continue in the same position.
