उत्तर प्रदेश में विधानसभा चुनाव के चौथे चरण के अंतर्गत ११ जिलों में ५६ सीटों पर वोट डाले जा रहे हैं। मतदान शाम पांच बजे तक चलेगा। इन सीटों के लिए ९१ महिलाओं सहित ९६७ उम्मीदवार मैदान में हैं। मतदान की ताजा जानकारी के लिए लखनऊ से फोन लाइन पर मौजूद हैं हमारे संवाददाता सुनील शुक्ल।एक करोड़ ७४ लाख से अधिक मतदाताओं के लिए १८ हजार छह सौ से अधिक मतदान केन्द्र बनाए गए हैं। इस चरण में लखनऊ, हरदोई, बांदा, प्रतापगढ़, रायबरेली, फर्रूखाबाद, उन्नाव, चित्रकूट, छत्रपति साहूजी नगर और कन्नौज जिलों में मतदान हो रहा है।

इटली के अधिकारी बुधवार को केरल तट के निकट गोलियां चलाए जाने की घटना में संदिग्ध रूप से शामिल अपने दो नौसैनिकों को आखिरकार केरल पुलिस को सौंपने को तैयार हो गये हैं। इस घटना में दो मछुआरे मारे गए थे। कोच्चि के पुलिस आयुक्त एम आर अजीत कुमार के नेतृत्व में तीन पुलिस अधिकारियों के दल ने कल रात जहाज में इटली के अधिकारियों से मुलाकात की। इसके बाद अधिकारियों ने बताया कि इटली के अधिकारी निर्देश का पालन करने पर सहमत हो गए हैं।

तमिलनाडु सरकार की चार सदस्यों की समिति ने कल कुडनकुलम परमाणु बिजलीघर का दौरा किया। समिति ने परियोजना के स्थानीय लोगों के विरोध से उत्पन्न गतिरोध दूर करने के लिए बिजलीघर और जिला अधिकारियों से बातचीत की। समिति में परमाणु ऊर्जा आयोग के अध्यक्ष एम आर श्रीनिवासन शामिल हैं। समिति आज पीपुल्स मुवमेंट अगेंस्ट न्यूक्लियर एनर्जी के प्रतिनिधियों से मिलेगी। यह संगठन सुरक्षा चिंता को लेकर परियोजना रद्द करने की मांग कर रहा है। परमाणु बिजलीघर के दो में से पहला रिएक्टर चालू करने पर बना गतिरोध दूर करने के लिए मुख्यमंत्री जयललिता ने इस समिति का गठन किया था।

दिल्ली की एक अदालत ने राष्ट्रीय जांच एजेंसी को निर्देश दिया है कि वह २६ नवम्बर, २००८ के मुम्बई हमलों में शामिल पाकिस्तानी मूल के अमेरिकी नागरिक डेविड हेडली को अगले महीने की १३ तारीख को पेश करे। अदालत ने भारत में कई आतंकी हमलों के सिलसिले में जांच एजेंसी से हेडली के साथी तहव्वुर राणा, लश्करे-तैयबा के संस्थापक हाफिज+ सईद और ज+की-उर-रहमान लखवी को भी पेश करने को कहा है। अदालत ने पाकिस्तान सेना के अधिकारी मेज+र इकबाल तथा मेज+र समीर अली, अलकायदा के इलियास कश्मीरी, हेडली के आका साजिद मलिक और पाकिस्तानी सेना के पूर्व अधिकारी अब्दुल रहमान हाशमी के खिलाफ गैर-जमानती वारंट जारी किये हैं। ----------------------
जम्मू-कश्मीर सरकार ने कहा है कि विभिन्न बोडोर्ं के सलाहकारों और उपाध्यक्षों के रूप में राजनीतिज्ञों की नियुक्ति वैध है और संवैधानिक सीमाओं के तहत है। राज्य के विधि और संसदीय कार्यमंत्री अली मोहम्मद सागर ने श्रीनगर में कहा कि जम्मू-कश्मीर सरकार विभिन्न बोर्डों में सलाहकारों और उपाध्यक्षों की नियुक्ति के बारे में राज्य जवाबदेही आयोग की नोटिस का अध्ययन कर रही है। आयोग ने राज्य सरकार से कहा था कि वह यह स्पष्ट करे कि उसने मुख्यमंत्री के राजनीतिक सलाहकारों और विभिन्न बोर्डों के उपाध्यक्षों को मंत्री स्तर का दर्जा कैसे दे दिया था। ----------------------
अंतर्राष्ट्रीय परमाणु ऊर्जा एजेंसी-आई ए ई ए के वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों का एक दल आज तेहरान का दौरा करेगा ताकि ईरान के विवादित परमाणु कार्यक्रम पर बातचीत की जा सके। संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासचिव बान की मून ने कहा कि अब ईरान का यह काम है कि वह अपने परमाणु कार्यक्रम के बारे में संशय दूर करे।इस बार आईएईए की टीम ईरान से इस बात की सफाई मांगेगी कि उसके परमाणु कार्यक्रम का कोई सैनिक उद्देश्य तो नहीं है। साथ ही आईएईए की टीम ईरान के परमाणु संयंत्रों का दौरा करने और ईरान के परमाणु वैज्ञानिकों से मिलने की पेशकश कर सकती है। आईएईए ने पिछले साल दिसम्बर में अपने रिपोर्ट में आशंका जताई थी कि ईरान शायद परमाणु बम बनाने की तकनीक पर काम कर रहा है। मगर तेहरान ने इस बात से साफ इनकार किया है और अपने कार्यक्रम को शांतिपूर्ण नागरिक उद्देश्य के लिए बताया है। अतुल तिवारी आकाशवाणी समाचार।

Polling is underway for the fourth phase of assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh for 56 constituencies spread over 11 districts. Polling, which began at 7 AM, will end at 5 PM. 967 candidates, including 91 women, are in the fray for this phase.
More than 18,600 polling stations have been set up for over 1 crore 74 lakh voters. Elaborate Security arrangements have been made to ensure free and fair polls. Additional security measures have been taken in sensitive areas of Chitrakoot, Banda, Pratapgarh and Lucknow. About 760 companies of both Central Para Military Force and Provincial Armed Constabulary along with police personnel from other states have been deployed. Two helicopters have been pressed into service for aerial surveillance in the Chitrakoot-Banda belt. Inter-state boundary with Madhya Pradesh along Chitrakoot and Banda have been sealed to prevent entry of anti-social elements.

The Italian authorities have finally agreed to hand over, two crew members of the ship suspected to be involved in the shooting incident off the Kerala coast last Wednesday, in which two fishermen had lost their lives. This follows a directive by the Kerala Police to hand over the marines before 8 AM today for interrogation and subject them to further legal procedures. The police also told the Italians that it will go ahead with further steps to ensure that its directive is complied with.
A team of police officials led by the Kochi City Police Commissioner M R Ajith Kumar, who met the Italian authorities on board the ship last night, told media persons that the Italians have agreed to comply with the directive. He refused to divulge the name of the marines.

In Tamil Nadu, M. Natrajan, husband of Sasikala, former aide of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Ms. J. Jayalalitha was arrested last night on charges of land grabing. He was later remanded to judicial custody till the second of March. Our correspondent reports that a number of close relatives of Sasikala have been arrested on charges of cheating, forgery and extortion.
Meanwhile, Sasikala who deposed before a special court trying the disproportionate assets case in Bangalore said that Ms. Jayalalitha was not involved with the affairs of the firm and was only a partner. She said she alone operated the bank accounts of the firm.

The Tamil Nadu government-appointed four-member committee will meet today the representatives of the People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy spearheading the protest against the Koodankulam nuclear power plant. The committee, which includes former Atomic Energy Commission Chief MR Srinivasan, yesterday visited the power plant and held talks with the plant and district authorities to break an impasse.
The committee was set up by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in a bid to break the logjam over commissioning of the first of the two reactors at the Koodankulam nuclear power plant.

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram arrived in Guwahati last evening after concluding his day-long visit to Bru refugee camps at Kanchanpur in North Tripura district. The Home Minister met the State Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik immediately after his arrival . Raj Bhavan sources said, both the leaders discussed on various issues concerning the law and order situation of the State, particularly after recent surrender of large number of militants and the peace process being undertaken with different banned organizations. The Home Minister is scheduled to meet the State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at Raj Bhavan in Guwahati at 9.00 am today morning.The Chief Minister is likely to take up the issue of total rehabilitation package for around six thousand militants, who laid down arms in the State, during the discussion.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has said the appointments of politicians as advisors and vice-chairpersons to various boards were legal and within the constitutional limit.
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar said in Srinagar that the advisors and Vice-Chairmen of various boards were appointed by the state government within the parameters of constitution and law of the State and are as such absolutely legal being in accordance with the constitution of the state. Mr. Sagar said the J-K government was examining the notice issued by the State Accountability Commission, SAC, on these appointments.
Earlier, the SAC had asked the government to explain as to how it had accorded ministerial status to political advisors of the chief minister and vice-chairpersons of various boards.

Former Supreme Court judge M B Shah, who had been entrusted with the task to look into the alleged fake encounters between 2002 to 2006 in Gujarat, has informed the apex court in a letter that he cannot head the inquiry as he is already overburdened with other probes.
The order was passed by the Supreme Court in response to PILs filed by veteran journalist B G Verghese and poet-lyricist Javed Akhtar seeking a direction for a probe by an independent agency or CBI so that the truth may come out.

A team of senior officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA will visit Teheran today for talks over Iran’s nuclear programme. UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon said it is now up to Iran to clear the doubts over the nature of its nuclear programme.
The team will seek clarifications from Iran over the nature of its disputed nuclear program. It will also seek the access to certain nuclear sites and scientists which was refused earlier. IAEA chief Yukiya Amano reported late last year that there were indications that Iran was Conducting researches towards developing nuclear weapons.Tehran says it needs nuclear technology only for generating power and other civilian purposes. A Commonwealth ministerial mission, which is in Male to probe into the ousting of Mohammed Nasheed, met Maldives' new President Mohamed Waheed Hussain and discussed the events that led to the political unrest in the country.

उत्तर प्रदेश विधानसभा चुनाव के चौथे चरण में ११ जिलों के ५६ निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों में आज ५७ प्रतिशत से अधिक मतदान हुआ है। इस चरण में २००७ के विधानसभा चुनाव के ४४ प्रतिशत की तुलना में १३ प्रतिशत अधिक मतदान हुआ। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि हरदोई जिले के शाहाबाद में सबसे अधिक ६४ प्रतिशत वोट पड़े हैं।सभी ५६ विधानसभा क्षेत्रो ंमें मतदान में वृद्धि हुई है। प्रतापगढ़, बांदा और चित्रकूट जिलों को छोड़कर अन्य जिलों के १३ विधानसभा क्षेत्रों में ६० प्रतिशत से अधिक वोट डाले गए हैं, जबकि २७ क्षेत्र ऐसे हैं, जहां ५५ प्रतिशत या इससे अधिक मतदान हुआ है। लखनऊ में जहां पिछले विधानसभा चुनाव में लगरेह इलाकों में चार क्षेत्रों में मात्र २८ से ३२ प्रतिशत ही वोट पड़े थे। वहां सभी ९ क्षेत्रों में ५१ से ६२ प्रतिशत तक मतदान हुआ है। मतदान में युवाओं और महिलाओं की भागीदारी को हर जगह महसूस किया गया है। छत्रपति साहू महाराज जी नगर जिले के एक मतदान केंद्र पर २३ फरवरी को दुबारा वोट डाले जायेंगे। जहां आज के मतदान में इलेक्ट्रॉनिक वोटिंग मशीन मे ंगड़बडी आ जाने के कारण वोट नहीं डाले जा सकें। सुनील शुक्ल, आकाशवाणी समाचार, लखनऊ।
राज्य के मुख्य चुनाव अधिकारी उमेश सिन्हा ने बताया है कि मतदान पूरी तरह शांतिपूर्ण रहा कहीं से भी कोई अप्रिय घटना की सूचना नहीं है। इस बीच, पांचवे और छठे चरण के लिए प्रचार जोरों पर है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि विभिन्न दलों के वरिष्ठ नेताओं ने आज कई रैलियों को संबोधित किया।
चौथे चरण के मतदान की समाप्ति के साथ अब चुनाव प्रचार का सारा जोर पांचवे और छठवें चरण के लिए होने वाले चुनावों पर हो गया है। आज भी सभी प्रमख राजनीतिक दलों के शिष्य नेताओं ने बुंदेलखंड और पश्चिम उत्तर प्रदेश के कई इलाकों में जनसभाएं की हैं। पांचवे चरण में ४९ विधानसभा सीटों के लिए २३ फरवरी को वोट डाले जायेंगें। संजय प्रताप सिंह, आकाशवाणी समाचार, इलाहाबाद।
वित्तमंत्री प्रणब मुखर्जी ने कहा है कि सूचना के अधिकार और शिक्षा के अधिकार के कानून के बाद सरकार, खाद्य सुरक्षा अधिकार का कानून बनाने के लिए गंभीरता से काम कर रही है। उन्होंने कहा कि इस पर अभी संसद की स्थायी समिति विचार कर रही है। श्री मुखर्जी, आज हरियाणा में गुड़गांव में ओरियन्टल बैंक ऑफ कॉमर्स के ७०वें स्थापना दिवस पर उसके नये कोर्पोरेट कार्यालय के उद्घाटन अवसर पर बोल रहे थे। वित्तमंत्री ने कहा कि देश के आर्थिक विकास में बैंकिंग सेवाओं ने बड़ी भूमिका निभायी है। वित्तमंत्री ने कहा कि संसद के पिछले बजट सत्र में उन्होंने कहा था कि दो हजार तक की आबादी वाले सभी गांवों में मार्च २०१२ तक बैंकिंग सुविधाएं उपलब्ध करा दी जाएंगी। उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार इस पर काम कर रही है और ओरियन्टल बैंक ऑफ कॉमर्स, इस लक्ष्य के बहुत नजदीक पहुंच गया है।

ग्रामीण विकास मंत्री जयराम रमेश ने कहा है कि केन्द्र सरकार, राज्यों को वित्तीय सहायता देने में किसी प्रकार की राजनीति नहीं करती। आज कोलकाता में एक संगोष्ठी में उन्होंने कहा कि केन्द्र ने पश्चिम बंगाल की नई सरकार को विभिन्न ग्रामीण विकास योजनाओं के तहत पर्याप्त धन दिया है। ग्रामीण विकास मंत्री ने विभिन्न ग्रामीण विकास परियोजनाओं को लागू करने में पंचायतों की प्रभावी भूमिका पर जोर दिया। इससे पहले श्री रमेश ने पश्चिम बंगाल के पंचायत और ग्रामीण विकास मंत्री सुब्रतो मुखर्जी से बातचीत की।----
केरल पुलिस ने पिछले बुधवार को केरल तट के पास दो भारतीय मछुआरों की हत्या के सिलसिले में इटली के तेलवाहक जहाज-एनरिका लेक्सी के दो नाविकों-लेटोर मासिनिलियानो और सलवातोर गिरोने को हिरासत में ले लिया है। पुलिस, इनसे पूछताछ कर कानूनी कार्रवाई शुरू करेगी। हिरासत में लिए गए दोनों व्यक्तियों को कड़ी सुरक्षा के बीच जहाज से बाहर लाया गया। उनके साथ पुलिस के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी और मुम्बई स्थित इटली के महावाणिज्य दूत भी थे। एर्नाकुलम के पुलिस महानिरीक्षक पद्मकुमार ने बताया कि पुलिस ने जहाज में दस्तावेजों की जांच की और केप्टन और चालक दल के अन्य सदस्यों के बयान रिकॉर्ड किए। उन्होंने कहा कि यह मामला बहुत संवेदनशील है, इसलिए विस्तृत बयान रिकॉर्ड किए गए।----
गृहमंत्री पी चिदम्बरम ने आज मेघालय में सुरक्षा स्थिति की समीक्षा की। उनके साथ मुख्यमंत्री मुकुल संगमा भी थे। बाद में श्री चिदम्बरम ने संवाददाताओं से कहा कि गारो नेशनल लिबरेशन आर्मी, एक उग्रवादी संगठन है और पुलिस, उस पर नियंत्रण के लिए सभी प्रयास करेगी। गृहमंत्री ने कहा कि इस संगठन को प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से दी जा रही सभी प्रकार की मदद रोक दी जानी चाहिए।श्री चिदम्बरम ने भारत-बंगलादेश सीमा पर रोशनी व्यवस्था, तारबंदी और सड़क निमार्ण के काम की प्रगति की समीक्षा की। उन्होंने इस पर संतोष व्यक्त किया और बताया कि मॉनसून से पहले इस तरह के और निर्माण किए जाएंगे।

असम सरकार ने केंद्र से आग्रह किया है कि नक्सल प्रभावित राज्यों को दी जाने वाली विशेष धनराशि उसे भी उपलब्ध कराई जाए। राज्य सरकार ने यह भी अनुरोध किया है कि समर्पण कर चुके लगभग छह हजार उग्रवादियों के लिए भी उसे विशेष पैकेज मुहैया कराए जाए। असम के मुख्यमंत्री तरूण गोगोई ने आज गुवाहाटी में राजभवन में केंद्रीय गृहमंत्री पी.चिदम्बरम के साथ इन मुद्दों पर चर्चा की।बाद में, पत्रकारों से बातचीत में श्री गोगोई ने कहा कि श्री चिदम्बरम के साथ माओवादियों, आई.एस.आई, विद्रोही गुटों के साथ शांति वार्ता और कानून व्यवस्था की स्थिति पर चर्चा हुई। श्री गोगोई ने कहा कि राज्य सरकार ने राज्य में माओवादियों का प्रभाव रोकने के सभी संभव प्रयास किए हैं।

असम में डिब्रूगढ़ जिले के फूलबागान में एक संयुक्त कार्रवाई में सुरक्षाबलों ने उल्फा के चार खूंखार उग्रवादियों को गिरफ्तार कर लिया। जिले क पुलिस अधीक्षक की अगुवाई में सुरक्षाबलों ने वार्ता विरोधी उल्फा संगठन के गुप्त ठिकाने से आज इन लोगों को गिरफ्तार किया। पुलिस ने उग्रवादियों के कब्जे से चीन में बने हथगोले और १५० कारतूस जब्त किये हैं। इन उग्रवादियों से पूछताछ के आधार पर पुलिस और अर्द्धसैनिक बलों ने डिब्रूगढ़ जिले के बारबरूआ के जंगलों में तलाशी अभियान तेज कर दिया है।----
रेल मंत्री दिनेश त्रिवेदी ने कहा है कि भारत, तीव्र गति की रेलगाड़ी के प्रस्ताव को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए जापान के साथ एक कार्यदल का गठन कर रहा है। श्री त्रिवेदी से हाल ही में मुलाकात करने वाले जापान के एक प्रतिनिधिमंडल ने उनसे तेज रतार की इस रेलगाड़ी के बारे में बातचीत की थी। श्री त्रिवेदी ने बताया कि जापान में इस रेलगाड़ी का सुरक्षा रिकॉर्ड बहुत अच्छा है क्योंकि अब तक इससे कोई दुर्घटना नहीं हुई है। जापान की तीव्र गति की रेलगाड़ी ÷शिंनकानसेन' तीन सौ किलोमीटर प्रति घंटे की रतार से चलती हैं और ये सुरक्षित, सुविधाजनक और वक्त की पाबंद मानी जाती है।----

छत्तीसगढ़ में राज्य के पहले वाणिज्यिक सौर ऊर्जा संयंत्र में उत्पादन शुरू हो गया है। जवाहर लाल नेहरू राष्ट्रीय सौर मिशन के तहत राजधानी रायपुर के पास खरोरा में स्थापित संयंत्र को विद्युत वितरण के लिए राष्ट्रीय ग्रिड से जोड़ दिया गया है। आर्थिक दृष्टि से सौर ऊर्जा को भले ही पारंपरिक बिजली की बराबरी करने को अब और समय लगेगा। परंतु चाहे वह देश की ऊर्जा सुरक्षा हो या फिर पर्यावरण सुरक्षा सौर बिजली की बराबरी शायद ही कोई अन्य ऊर्जा स्रोत कर पायेगा। छत्तीसगढ़ में स्थापित दो मेगावाट क्षमता का पहला व्यावसायिक सौर ऊर्जा का संयंत्र सौर मिशन की २०२२ तक २० हजार मेगावाट बिजली उत्पादन के लक्ष्य के मुकाबले भले ही एक छोटा कदम प्रतीत होता है। परंतु सौर मिशन की सामग्री आकांशाओं की पूर्ति के लिए यह एक सशक्त कदम जरूर है। रायपुर से गिरीश चंद्र दास।

असम में कांजीरंगा राष्ट्रीय उद्यान से चार गैंडों को मानस राष्ट्रीय उद्यान ले जाया जा रहा है। दोनों ही उद्यान प्रतिष्ठित विश्व धरोहर सूची में शामिल हैं। सरकारी सूत्रों के अनुसार गैंडों को कल मानस राष्ट्रीय उद्यान में छोड़ा जायेगा। गैंडों की गर्दन में लगाये गये रेडियो पट्टों से उनकी गतिविधियों पर नजर रखी जायेगी। इसी महीने छह और गैंडों को कांजीरंगा राष्ट्रीय उद्यान ले जाया जायेगा।विश्व में सबसे अधिक एक सिंह वाले गैंडे असम में पाये जाते हैं।

पोलियो उन्मूलन के लिए आज देशभर में टीकाकरण अभियान चलाया गया, इसमें पांच साल तक के १७ करोड़ बच्चों को पोलियो रोधी दवा पिलाई गयी। राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा देवीसिंह पाटील ने कल इस अभियान की औपचारिक शुरूआत करते हुए राष्ट्रपति भवन में आठ बच्चों को पोलियो-रोधी दवा पिलाई।राजधानी दिल्ली में विभिन्न सरकारी और निजी अस्पतालों और दवाखानों में बच्चों को पोलियो की दवा पिलाने के व्यापक प्रबंध किये गये।

In Uttar Pradesh over 57 percent voters exercised their franchise today in phase four of the assembly elections for 56 constituencies spread over 11 districts. Our correspondent reports a maximum of 64 percent polling has been recorded at Shahabad in Hardoi district.
Above 13 percent increase in voting has been recorded in this election as only about 44 percent polling had taken place in these districts in 2007 assembly elections. All poll bound 56 constituencies have recorded more polling in the comparison of previous assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Except Pratapgarh, Banda and Chitrakoot districts several constituencies from remaining districts have polled above 60 percent. In 27 constituencies above 55 percent polling has taken place and except Kunda segment in Pratapgarh district all segments have polled 50 percent and above it.
In the state capital Lucknow where only 28 to 32 percent polling had taken place in four assembly constituencies in last assembly elections 52 to 62 percent voters have exercised their franchise in today's voting. An incident of stone pelting has taken place at polling centre in Farrukhabad over entry of electorates at last minutes of polling. Repolling at one polling booth will be taking place in Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar on February 23 as a technical snag was developed in EVM in today's polling.Sunil Shukla, AIR News Lucknow.
Elaborate security arrangements were in place to insure free, peaceful and impartial voting. Most of the polling stations were manned by the Central Para Military Forces. The electoral fate of 967 candidates including 91 women is now sealed in Electronic Voting Machines.
Meanwhile, intense campaigning for the fifth and sixth phase o elections is going on. Our correspondent reports that senior political leaders from different political parties have addressed several rallies in different places in the state.
As the fourth phase election ends today the brisk campaigning is going on for fifth and sixth phase elections. In Kerala, two Italian naval personnel on board the Enrica Lexie, suspected to be involved in the killing of two fishermen off the Kerala coast last Wednesday have been taken into custody by the state Police.
The two naval personnel involved in the firing incident were taken into custody by the Kerala Police this evening, shortly after talks in New Delhi betwen Indian and Italian government officials to avert their arrest failed. As the Italian naval personnel wearing military fatigues disembarked from the vessel and reached the shore, they were immediately whisked away to the CISF Guest House at Wellington Island were they were interrogated. The Ernakulam Range IG Mr. Padmakumar said the Italians fully ooperated with the police and added that the statements of the crew including that of the vssel's captain have been recorded. He said documents on board the ship were also verified.

The Railways Minister Dinesh Trivedi said India is forming a joint working group with Japan to carry forward the high-speed train proposal. A Japanese delegation recently met Mr Trivedi and made a presentation of the operation of high speed trains in the country. Mr Trivedi said safety record of high-speed trains in Japan is excellent as there has been no accident to date.
While the railways have identified six routes for conducting a study for running train at 300 km per hour speed on elevated tracks, it has selected the Delhi-Mumbai route to operate train at 200 km on the existing track.

The West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamta Banerjee flagged off six new trains at Howrah station in Kolkata this evening. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Banerjee said that as Railway Minister what she had committed has been fulfilled by starting of the new train services. Union Finance Minister Mr Pranab Mukherji today said that the Government is serious about the Right to Food Security Act after implementing the Right to Information and Right to Education Act. Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal today said foreign investors have not lost confidence in the sector and will participate in the auction of the airwaves freed by the court judgement. Talking to a News Agency he also ruled out the possibility of foreign telecom investors quitting India in the wake of the judgement. The Supreme Court had earlier this month cancelled 122 licences that were issued during the tenure of the then Telcom Minister A Raja in 2008.

In Assam, four hardcore ULFA militants have been arrested by the security forces in a joint operation at Phoolbagan in Dibrugarh district this afternoon. Acting on a tip off, the security forces led by Superintendent of Police of the district, conducted a joint operation in the area and managed to apprehend the militants belonging to the anti-talk group of ULFA from their hide-out. Police recovered five Chinese-made grenades and 150 rounds of ammunition from the possession of the militants. Meanwhile, on the basis of interrogation of the militants, the police and paramilitary forces have launched a massive search operation in the jungles of Barbaruah locality of Dibrugarh district to apprehend more ultra cadres of the group from their hide-outs.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today reviewed the security situation in Meghalaya with Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sang.
Interacting with the media after the meeting, Mr Chidambaram said that Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was a terrorist organization and police forces would take all efforts to control their activities.
Mr Chidambaram said that all the overt and covert help to GNLA must be stopped.
Mr Chidambaram also reviewed the progress of works of on fencing, roads and flood lighting at the Indo-Bangla border. He expressed satisfaction over these and said that more works would be done before the onset of Monsoon.

A nationwide Immunization campaign for polio was launched today in which 17 crore children were administered polio drops. More than 23 lakh volunteers participated in this massive national effort. Our correspondent reports that the campaign was formally started yesterday when President Pratibha Devisingh Patil administered Polio vaccine drops to eight children at Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Australia today defeated India by 110 runs in their tri-series ODI in Brisbane. Electing to bat, Australia made 288 for five in their 50 overs, and then bowled out India for 178 in 43.3 overs. It was a batting disaster for India, with one after the other batsman failing to stand up to the attack by Australian bowlers particularly of Lee and Hilfenhaus. Gambhir, Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Tendulkar left the crease without making any substantial contribution to the Team's total. Skipper Dhoni was the only batsman who could cross the half century mark. He made 56. On the Australian side, Mike Hussey scored 59 and Peter Forrest made 52 . Australian Paceman Ben Hilfenhaus was adjudged Man of the Match. India will next play with Srilanka on the 23rd of this month at the same venue .

The Indian women's hockey team beat Canada 4-1 in their second match of the 2012 London Olympics qualifiers at Major Dhyan Chand-National-Stadium in New Delhi today. World No. 13 India were in the attacking mode right from the start and led 3-0 by half-time against Canada, who are 20th in the FIH rankings Both India and Canada were in a must-win position to stay alive in the competition. In men's hockey, India is leading by 6 goals to one over Italy in the second half when 30 minutes of play were still to go.

The Union Minister for Rural Development Mr. Jairam Ramesh has said that the Centre does not see any political colour for granting financial assistance to states. Addressing a seminer in Kolkata today, Mr. Ramesh said that, the Centre has sanctioned adequate funds to the new government in West Bengal under various rural development schemes. The Union Minister stressed the need for effective functioning of Panchayats to implement different rural development projects.

Mahashivaratri will be celebrated throughout the country tomorrow. However, in Jammu and Kashmir, the celebration started from today.
Walnuts, whose shape represents the universe, play an important part in Herath rituals of Kashmiri Pandits. Walnuts are filled in earthen pots and it is then filled with water. The water is changed every day of the festival. A big earthen pot, two medium sized earthen pot, two small earthen pot, clay modelled to the shape of elephant trunk and seven bowls are used in Herath ritual and they are known as 'Watuk'. Watuk represents Shiva, Parvati, Ganesha, Sapta Rishis and other deities. After performing Puja of Watuk throughout the night and visiting nearby Shiv temples , the second day of the Shivratri festival is being celebrated by Kashmiri Pandits as “SALAAM”. It is a day of fun and feasting, a sort of Thanksgiving Day when relations, friends and colleagues would exchange greetings. All the Shiva temples in Jammu division have been beautifully decorated today.
