 सी बी आई महाराष्ट्र में मुम्बई आदर्श हाउसिंग सोसायटी मामले में एफ आई आर में दर्ज लोगों के आवासों पर छापे मार रही है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि मुम्बई में सोसायटी के प्रमोटर आर० सी० ठाकुर और कांग्रेस के पूर्व विधायक कन्हैया लाल गिडवानी के आवासों पर छापे मारे जा रहे हैं। सीबीआई ने मुम्बई में आदर्श हाउसिंग सोसायटी की इमारत और कार्यालय पर छापे मारे।

 आदर्श सोसायटी घोटाला मामले में कल कुछ लोगों के खिलाफ एफ आई आर दर्ज करने के बाद जांच को और तेज करते हुए सी बी आई ने आज अनेक जगहों पर छापे मार कर तलाशी अभियान शुरू कर दिया है। एफ आई आर में जिनके नाम आए हैं, उन लोगों के निवास की तलाशी ली जा रही है। जिनमें कांग्रेस के पूर्व विधान परिषद सदस्य कन्हैया लाल गिडवानी, सोसायटी के प्रमोटर आर सी ठाकुर और पूर्व मेजर जनरल एम एम वांछु के नाम शामिल हैं। सीबीआई सूत्रों ने बताया कि मुम्बई के अलावा पुणे, नागपुर और पटना में भी यह तलाशी अभियान चल रहा है। उमेश उजगरे, आकाशवाणी समाचार, मुम्बई।
 आदर्श हाउसिंग सोसायटी मामले में कल सी बी आई ने एफ आई आर दर्ज कराई थी। बम्बई उच्च न्यायालय ने करीब १० दिन पहले एक जनहित याचिका पर सुनवाई के समय जांच की धीमी गति के लिए सी बी आई की आलोचना की थी। उच्च न्यायालय ने सीबीआई को निर्देश दिया था कि वह दो हफ्‌ते में प्रारम्भिक जांच रिपोर्ट पेश करे।

 वित्त मंत्रालय ने एक अध्ययन दल का गठन किया है जो सुझाव देगा कि ऐसे कौन से ऐसे कदम उठाये जा सकते हैं जिससे लोग अपने बिना हिसाब किताब वाली धनराशि को सामने लाने के लिए प्रेरित हों। सरकारी सूत्रों के हवाले से हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया कि यह अध्ययन आर्थिक और कर विशेषज्ञों द्वारा कराया जा रहा है। यह दल इस बात का भी अध्ययन करेगा कि कर बचाने वाली योजनाओं का लोग नाजायज+ फायदा न उठा सकें।
 अध्ययन दल प्रत्यक्ष करों को बढ़ाने और कर चोरी को रोकने के लिए मौजूदा व्यापार परिदृश्य को बदलने के सम्बन्ध में भी सुझाव देगा। इससे कालेधन पर  लगाम लग सकेगा। यह समूह प्रभावित लोगों और कर देने वाले हर समुदाय के साथ सलाह-मश्विरा करने के बाद अपनी रिपोर्ट देगा।

  इंजीनियरी के सामान का निर्यात वार्षिक आधार पर लगभग ५० प्रतिशत बढ़कर ३७ अरब डॉलर हो गया। पिछले वर्ष दिसंबर में साढ़े पांच अरब डॉलर मूल्य के इंजीनियरी सामान का निर्यात हुआ। निर्यात में यह बढ़ोत्तरी अमरीका और पश्चिम एशिया के बाजारों में बढ़ती मांग के कारण हुई है, लेकिन यूरोपीय अर्थव्यवस्था के अब भी पटरी पर नहीं लौटने से वहां मांग कम है।
 पिछले वित्त वर्ष में भारत का यह निर्यात साढ़े ३२ अरब  डॉलर के बराबर था। ६५ प्रतिशत माल अमरीका और यूरोपीय संघ को भेजा गया।
 इंजीनियरिंग निर्यात में भारी इंजीनियरिंग वस्तुएं, यातायात उपकरण, पूंजीगत वस्तुएं, अन्य मशीनरी और हल्के इंजीनियरिंग उत्पाद शामिल हैं।

 नॉर्वे भारत में दूरसंचार क्षेत्र में दीर्घावधि निवेश करेगा। नॉर्वे के व्यापार और उद्योग मंत्री ट्रान गिस्के ने मुंबई में एक बयान में कहा कि उनकी सरकार भारत में कारोबार के प्रति गंभीर है और भारत के साथ लंबे समय तक सहयोग करना चाहती है।
 देश में पिछले वर्ष तक, ६२ करोड़ १० लाख  उपभोक्ता थे जिसके आधार पर भारत दुनिया का तीसरा सबसे बड़ा दूरंसचार नेटवर्क वाला देश है। भारत में दूरसंचार कनेक्शन की संख्या प्रतिवर्ष ४५ प्रतिशत की दर से बढ़ रही है।

 महात्मा गांधी की ६३वीं पुण्य तिथि पर आज देशभर में उन्हें श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की जा रही है। देशभर में ११ बजे दो मिनट का मौन रखा गया। राजधानी दिल्ली सहित पूरे देश में गांधी जी की स्मृति में विभिन्न कार्यक्रमो का आयोजन किया जा रहा है।
 राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा देवीसिंह पाटील, उपराष्ट्रपति मोहम्मद हामिद अंसारी और प्रधानमंत्री डॉक्टर मनमोहन सिंह ने महात्मा गांधी को भावभीनी श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित की। अनेक वरिष्ठ नेताओं ने राजघाट जाकर महात्मा गांधी की समाधि पर पुष्प चढ़ाये।
 
 नई दिल्ली में गांधी स्मृति में आज एक सर्वधर्म प्रार्थना सभा आयोजित की जायेगी। आज का दिन शहीदी दिवस और कुष्ठ रोग निवारण दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। कुष्ठ रोग के बारे में जागरूकता लाने के लिए देशभर में कई कार्यक्रम किये जा रहे हैं।

 पश्चिम बंगाल में बैरकपुर गांधी घाट पर मुख्य समारोह हुए जिसमें राज्यपाल एम० के० नारायणन्‌ ने शहीद स्तम्भ पर पुष्पांजलि अर्पित की। राज्यपाल ने कोलकाता में गांधी जी की मूर्ति पर माल्यार्पण भी किया। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि इस अवसर पर बेलिया घाट में गांधी भवन में विशेष प्रार्थना सभा का आयोजन किया गया।

 भारतीय वायुसेना को इस साल गणतंत्र दिवस परेड में मार्च के लिए सेना के तीनों अंगों में बेस्ट मार्चिंग कन्टींजेन्ट पुरस्कार से नवाजा गया। जबकि अर्धसैनिक बलों में भारत-तिब्बत सीमा पुलिस को बेहतर माना गया। इस साल राजपथ पर सेना के तीनों अंगों के दस से अधिक टुकड़ियों ने मार्च में भाग लिया। समारोह के दौरान विभिन्न राज्यों और मंत्रालयों से आईं तेईस झाकियों में से सांस्कृतिक और धार्मिक समन्वय पर आधारित राष्ट्रीय राजधानी दिल्ली की झांकी को पहला पुरस्कार दिया गया। विजेताओं को यह पुरस्कार सोमवार को रक्षा मंत्री ए के एंटनी प्रदान करेंगे। इस वर्ग में कर्नाटक की झांकी को दूसरा स्थान जबकि जम्मू कश्मीर की झांकी को तीसरा स्थान मिला है। परेड में शामिल स्कूली बच्चों के पांच कार्यक्रमों में से उत्तरी क्षेत्र सांस्कृतिक केन्द्र पाटियाला के बच्चों द्वारा किये गये पंजाब के भांगड़ा नृत्य को सर्वोत्तम माना गया।

 मिस्र में आज सुबह कफ्‌र्यू हटा लिए जाने के बाद विरोध प्रदर्शन फिर हो रहे है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि राष्ट्रपति हुस्नी मुबारक ने सैन्य खुफिया विभाग के प्रमुख जनरल उमर सुलेमान को उप-राष्ट्रपति और उड्डयन मंत्री अहमद शफीक को प्रधानमंत्री बनाया है।

 देश में नए उपराष्ट्रपति और प्रधानमंत्री की नियुक्ति से अप्रभावित लोग राष्ट्रपति के इस्तीफे और देश में व्यापक राजनीतिक और आर्थिक सुधार की मांग को लेकर प्रदर्शन जारी रखने को कटिवद्ध दिखाई देते हैं। सेना को सभी मुख्य स्थानों पर तैनात किया गया है लेकिन उसने अब तक प्रदर्शनकारियों के खिलाफ कोई कार्रवाई नहीं की है। राष्ट्रपति मुबारक के तीस सालों के शासन के सबसे बड़े इन प्रदर्शनों ने क्षेत्र के अन्य देशों के शासकों में सिरहन पैदा कर दी है, जिनका प्रारंभ राजनीतिक सहभागिता की कमी, बढ़ती बेरोजगारी, बढ़ती कीमतों और भ्रष्टाचार के कारण हुआ।
 मिस्र में पिछले मंगलवार से जारी सरकार विरोधी प्रदर्शनों और हिंसक झड़पों में कम से कम ७४ लोग मारे गए हैं और लगभग दो हजार घायल हुए हैं। लूटपाट की घटनाओं के कारण सेना की सेवाएं ली जा रही हैं। देश में  इंटरनेट सेवा अब भी कटी हुई है। खबर है कि राजधानी काहिरा के दक्षिण-पश्चिम में देमू जेल से एक हजार कैदी फरार हो गए हैं।
 इस बीच, मिस्र के नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता मोहम्मद अलबरदेई ने श्री मुबारक से सत्ता छोड़ने को कहा है। अमरीका, ब्रिटेन, फ्रांस और जर्मनी ने भी उनसे सुधार कार्यक्रम लागू करने की अपील की है।

 वाशिंगटन में भारतीय दूतावास ने अमरीकी विदेश मंत्रालय और अन्य संबंधित विभागों से यह सुनिश्चित करने को कहा है कि ट्राई वैेली यूनिवर्सिटी में धोखाधड़ी से प्रभावित भारतीय छात्रों को परेशान न किया जाए। पिछले हफ्‌ते कैलिफोर्निया की एक अदालत में दायर याचिका के अनुसार ट्राई वैेली यूनिवर्सिटी ने विदेशी नागरिकों को गैर-कानूनी तरीके से आव्रजन हासिल करने में मदद की थी। शिकायत के अनुसार यूनिवर्सिटी ने एक हजार पांच सौ ५५ विद्यार्थियों को गैर कानूनी तरीके से भर्ती किया।  इनमें ९५ प्रतिशत  भारतीय हैं।

 विश्व के कई देश इस वर्ष के अंत तक नया अंतर्राष्ट्रीय व्यापार समझौता तैयार करने के निरंतर प्रयास करने पर सहमत हो गए हैं। नये समझौते से विश्व अर्थव्यवस्था को मजबूती देने के लिए खाद्यान्न, औद्योगिक वस्तुओं और अन्य उत्पादों के व्यापार में मदद मिलेगी। स्विटजरलैंड के दावोस में विश्व आर्थिक मंच की बैठक में अर्थशास्त्रियों के एक दल और पच्चीस देशों के वित्त मंत्रियों ने अंतर्राष्ट्रीय आर्थिक विकास की उम्मीद जाहिर की। उन्होंने कहा कि अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अर्थव्यवस्था में २०१० में पांच प्रतिशत की सराहनीय वृद्धि हुई।

 पाकिस्तान में मोहम्मद एजेंसी की पांडयाली तहसील में सुरक्षा बलों की कार्रवाई में ९ आतंकवादी मारे गए हैं। सुरक्षा बलों ने अफगानिस्तान की सीमा से लगे इस इलाके में आतंकवादियों के छिपने के ठिकानों पर हवाई हमले किए। सुरक्षा बलों ने नहकी इलाके में विस्थापितों के एक शिविर से छह संदिग्ध लोगों को भी हिरासत में लिया है।

 गृहमंत्री पी चिदम्बरम ने कहा है कि २००७ में हुए समझौता एक्सप्रेस विस्फोट मामले में कुछ सबूत सामने आये हैं और जांच पूरी होने के बाद भारत, पाकिस्तान के साथ इस बारे में सूचनाओं का आदान प्रदान करेगा। दावोस में एक निजी टेलीविजन चैनल से बातचीत में श्री चिदम्बरम ने कहा कि उन्होंने पाकिस्तान के गृहमंत्री रहमान मलिक से भारत की स्थिति को स्पष्ट कर दिया है। श्री चिदम्बरम ने कहा कि कट्टरवादी हिन्दू संगठन अभिनव भारत के स्वामी असीमानन्द ने एक अदालत के सामने समझौता एक्सप्रैस और मालेगांव विस्फोट मामलों में अपना जुर्म कबूल कर लिया है।

 असम में युनेस्को और प्रकृति संरक्षण अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय संगठन के तीन सदस्यीय दल ने बस्का जिले में मानस राष्ट्रीय पार्क का मौके पर मुआयना किया। दल २५ जनवरी को बस्का पहुंचा था। बहरीन में विश्व विरासत समिति की ३५वीं बैठक से पहले हुए इस मुआयने को काफी महत्वपूर्ण माना जा रहा है। मानस राष्ट्रीय पार्क के महानिदेशक ने बताया कि दल पार्क के सवार्ंगीण विकास को लेकर संतुष्ट है। इससे पहले २००८ में भी युनेस्को के दल ने पार्क का निरीक्षण किया था।

 मध्य प्रदेश में कान्हा नेशनल पार्क के १९ बाइसन को बांधवगढ़ नेशनल पार्क लाया गया है। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि यह पहला मौका है जब बाइसन जैसे बड़े वन्यजीव को एक उद्यान से दूसरे उद्यान में भेजा गया है।

 वाइसनों को प्रदेश के वन विभाग द्वारा एक दक्षिण अफ्रीकी कंपनी और भारतीय वन्य जीव संस्थान के सहयोग से कान्हा से बांधवगढ़ लाया गया है। यह वाइसन बांधवगढ़ नेशनल पार्क में ५० हेक्टेयर क्षेत्र में बनाए गये एक बाड़े में रखे गये हैं। उन पर करीब दो महीने तक निगरानी रखने के बाद उन्हें जंगल में छोड़ दिया जाएगा। दक्षिण अफ्रीकी कंपनी इस प्रक्रिया में इस्तेमाल की गयी दवाओं, ट्रकुलाइजर गनों और विशेष रूप से निर्मित ट्रकों को यही छोड़ जाएगी। इन्हें अगले साल कुछ और वाइसन बांधवगढ़ लाने के लिए इस्तेमाल किया जाएगा। बांधवगढ़ में वाइसन ९० के दशक तक देखे गये थे, जिसके बाद वे गायब हो गये।

 केरल में तिरूअनन्तपुरम का उष्ण कटिबंधीय वनस्पति उद्यान और अनुसंधान संस्थान पूरे दक्षिण एशिया में बांस प्रजाति का सबसे बड़ा केन्द्र बन चुका है। छह दशमलव पांच-नौ हेक्टेयर में फैले इस संस्थान में देश और दुनियाभर की बांस की अड़+सठ प्रजातियां मौजूद हैं।

 केन्या के क्यू जॉन ने तीसरा नागपुर अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मैराथन दो घंटे १५ मिनट और २० सैकेण्ड के रिकॉर्ड समय में जीत लिया है। दो घंटे १५ मिनट और ३२ सैंकेण्ड लेकर इथियोपिया के अफवर्क अयेले किब्रेट दूसरे स्थान पर रहे और केन्या के ही सुम्बेई फेडरिक दो घंटे सोलह मिनट और एक सैकेण्ड लेकर  तीसरे स्थान पर रहे। भारत के विपुल कटारिया दो घंटे उन्तीस मिनट और नौ सेकेण्ड की दौड़ के साथ प्रतियोगिता में बीसवें स्थान पर रहे।
  हाफ मैराथन में महिला वर्ग का खिताब केन्या की ही मुईया जाने म्वीकली ने एक घंटे तेरह मिनट और तेरह सेकेण्ड में जीत लिया।  भारत की कविता रावत हाफ मैराथन में एक घंटे उन्नीस मिनट और तेईस सेकेण्ड की दौड़ के साथ प्रतियोगिता में तेरहवें स्थान पर रही।
 मैराथन के अवसर पर महाराष्ट्र के मुख्यमंत्री पृथ्वीराज चव्हाण और केन्द्रीय मंत्री मुकुल वासनिक उपस्थित थे।
 शांति और अहिंसा की संस्कृति को बढ़ावा देने के उद्देश्य से आयोजित इस मैराथन में पैंसठ विदेशी धावकों सहित करीब एक लाख लोगों ने भाग लिया।

The CBI is conducting raids at the residence of some of those named in the FIR filed in the Adarsh Society scam in Mumbai. Searches are being conducted at the Mumbai residence of the promoter of the society, RC Thakur and former Congress MLC, Kanhaiyalal Gidwani. The searches were also conducted at the Society building and office in Mumbai.  The CBI yesterday filed an FIR in the case. The agency began probe in the case after receiving a letter from the Ministry of Defence. Around 10 days ago, the Bombay High Court, while hearing a Public Interest Litigation petition, had reprimanded the investigating agency for not filing an FIR. It had directed the CBI to finish the preliminary inquiry within two weeks and decide if it wanted to file an FIR.

Widespread anti government demonstrations and violent clashes in Egypt between the protesters and the riot police have left at least 74 people dead since Tuesday. About 2,000 people have been injured.  President Hosni Mubarak has appointed the country’s military intelligence chief General Omar Suleiman as his first-ever Vice President and current aviation minister Ahmed Shafiq the new Prime Minister. Fresh riots broke out in several cities including Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and Ismailiya. In Cairo and other cities, thousands of demonstrators have ignored a curfew. Our Correspondent reports that Cairo's central Tahrir Square was full of protesters during the night.  Egyptian reform campaigner and Nobel Prize winner Mohamed El-Baradei has asked Mr. Mubarak to step down. Leaders from the United States, Britain, France and Germany have urged President Mubarak to avoid violence and enact reforms. Indian Ambassodor to Egypt, R Swaminathan said that all Indians in Egypt are safe.

Demonstrators appeared to be unconvinced with the appointment of new Vice President and Prime Minister and they are determined to go ahead with the protests calling for resignation of President Mubarak and sweeping political and economic changes in the country. Army have been deployed across the main areas but they have not taken any action so far. The largest in Egypt in three decades of Mubarak's rule, the protests are sending shock waves across the region as it has started against the backdrop of widespread resentment over lack of political participation, rising unemployment, food prices and corruption.

Home Minister P Chidambaram has said some evidence has emerged in the 2007 Samjhauta blast case and India will share information with Pakistan once the probe is over. Chidambaram told a private television channel in Davos that he had conveyed India's position to his Pakistani counterpart Rehman Malik. He said, said that right-wing Hindu group Abhinav Bharat member Swami Aseemanand has confessed his involvement in the Samjhauta case as also in the Malegoan blast case before a court.

The Finance Ministry has instituted a study group to improve voluntary compliance by suggesting appropriate measures to motivate tax evaders to disclose their unaccounted funds. Our correspondent quoting official sources reports, the study will be conducted by economic and tax experts. It is also aimed at stopping commoditisation of tax avoidance schemes. The latest study comes in the backdrop of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's statement that two groups have been constituted to look into different aspects of black money, including a proposed amnesty scheme to unearth unaccounted wealth.  The study group will strategise to increase direct tax collections and suggest measures to curb tax evasion effectively in the changing business scenario, which includes curbing generation of black money. The group will then make recommendations with respect to the operational decision-making process on the basis of views expressed by affected parties, as well as facilitate participation in the tax system by all segments of taxable citizens.

India's engineering exports grew by about 50 per cent year-on-year to 5.5 billion dollars in December last year. The gain is attributed to an increased demand from the US and Middle East markets. Engineering Export Promotion Council, EPCH said, there are good number of orders from the US and Middle East but the recovery in the European economy is still fragile and demand is yet to pick up.  Out of India's total engineering exports worth 32.5 billion US dollars in 2009-2010, the US and EU accounted for about 65 per cent of the shipments. During April-December, 2010-2011, the exports jumped about 50 per cent to  37 billion dollars, compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. Engineering exports include heavy engineering goods, transport equipment, capital goods, other machinery equipment and light engineering products like castings, forgings and fasteners.

The Indian Air Force has bagged the 'Best Marching Contingent' award amongst the three Services at this year's Republic Day Parade. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police has been adjudged the best amongst the paramilitary. More than 10 contingents of the three Services marched on the Rajpath. Among the 23 tableaux showcasing their states and ministries, the tableau from Delhi, with its theme of cultural and religious harmony in the national capital, has bagged the coveted first prize. The awards to the winning contingents would be given away by Defence Minister A K Antony on Monday. The Karnataka tableau, depicting the exotic handicraft of Bidriware from Bidar region, and Jammu & Kashmir tableau, portraying the Bhand Pather folk theatre from Kashmir Valley, has won the Second and Third Prize respectively in this category. Among the five School Children Items that took part in the Parade, the ‘Bhangra’ dance from Punjab, performed by children from the North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala has been adjudged the best.

Norway has pledged full and long-term telecom investment interest in India. Norwegian Trade and Industry Minister Trond Giske said in a statement in Mumbai that the Norway Government has a serious business interest in India and is committed to co-operating with New Delhi on a long-term basis. He said its government has committed itself to providing the best possible services to the country's fast-growing telecommunications sector.The Indian telecommunications network has more than 621 million connections as of 2010, making it the third largest in the world. This figure is growing rapidly at the rate of 45 per cent per annum.

President Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh led the nation in paying homage to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 63rd death anniversary today. President, Vice president, Prime Minister, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj paid rich floral tributes at Gandhiji's Samadhi Rajghat in the Capital. Defence Minister A K Antony, former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, chiefs of three services, central ministers, leaders of various political parties and people from different walks of life also paid tribute to the apostle of peace at his memorial.

A two minute silence was observed on AIR during All India Radio news bulletin from 11 AM to 11.02 AM to mark the Martyrdom Day. An all religion prayer meeting will also be held at Gandhi Smriti in New Delhi later today.

It was on this day in 1948 Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead while on his way to a prayer meeting around 5.15 in the evening by Nathuram Godse at the Birla house in New Delhi now known as Gandhi Smriti. Bapu spent last 144 days of his life here. Several functions are being organized at the Smriti to mark the Martyrdom day. Like Rajghat, here also a steady stream of visitors is pouring in to pay homage to the apostle of peace and non violence. A little while from now, around 500 school children will pay musical tributes by singing various devotional songs including Gandhiji's favourite Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram. The phenomena called Gandhiji still rules our hearts and minds. Albert Einstein rightly said Generation to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood.

A multi-faith prayer service was also organized with religious leaders of Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Bahai, Christianity, Jainism, Jewish, Parsi and Sikhism participating in the programme.

In Chandigarh, the record room of Punjab and Haryana High court caught fire early in the morning today.  The four vans of fire brigade controlled the fire and one fire brigade official was injured while saving the handicapped watchman of the record room.  It is learnt that a number of files pertaining to high court record have been damaged in the fire.The exact cause of fire yet to be ascertained.

The Srinagar Jammu National Highway was thrown open for one way traffic following clearance of snow near Jawahal tunnel. AIR correspondent said that traffic has been allowed to move from Srinagar to Jammu.

After closure for 8 hours in the Srinagar -Jammu national highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country was thrown open for traffic this noon. SP ,Traffic, G.M.Wadoo told AIR that the road has been clear for traffic and all the stranded vehicles have been allowed to move from Srinagar to Jammu. Meanwhile the met department in Srinagar has forecasted more snow and rain in the next 24 hours.

In Madhya Pradesh, nineteen bisons have been trans -located from Kanha National Park to Bandhavgarh National Park under the bison translocation programme. Our Bhopal correspondent reports that this is the first time that such big animals were trans-located from one habitat to another.

The translocation was carried out by the state forest department with the assistance of a South African company and Wildlife Institute of India. The trans-located bisons are being kept at a 50 hectare enclosure in Bandhavgarh National Park. They are likely to be released in the wild after two months of observation. The South African company will leave behind the equipments like drugs, tranquilizer guns, specially designed trucks used in the translocation. They would be used next year for trans-locating some more bisons to Bandhavgarh. Earlier bisons in Bandhavgarh were seen till the mid nineties after which they disappeared.

In Assam, a three member UNESCO-International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN team has concluded on the spot assessments of Manas National Park at Baska district. The visit comes ahead of the 35th World Heritage Committee meeting in Bahrain. The Director of the Manas National Park said that the team expressed satisfaction on the overall development of the park in terms of wildlife habitat, infrastructure, community participation and manpower.

World trade leaders have agreed to make concerted efforts for a new global trade agreement by the end of this year. The agreement would help open up trade in food, industrial goods and other products in an effort to boost the world economy.  A panel of economists and finance ministers of nearly twenty five countries meeting at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort of Davos, expressed optimism about global economic growth during an in-depth discussion. They said, the global economy grew a healthy five percent in 2010. The Doha Round of trade talks was started in 2001 but the intermittent negotiations were plagued by missed deadlines and disputes between developed and developing nations.

Officials in Seoul say that five suspected Somali pirates captured during a raid on a hijacked cargo ship in the Arabian Sea have arrived in South Korea for a possible trial. The South Korean coast guard said the five arrived in the southeastern city of Busan today and were immediately put in a detention center for questioning. The five face possible life in prison. The men were captured when South Korean commandos raided the Samho Jewelry earlier this month, a week after pirates seized the ship and its 21 crew members. Eight of the pirates were killed and the captain was shot in the stomach. He remains in critical condition. After surgery in Dubai, the captain returned to South Korea yesterday for more treatment. None of the other crew members were harmed. They and their ship are headed for Oman.

In Iraq, two police officers and a soldier were killed in attacks by gunmen in Baghdad yesterday. An Interior Ministry source today said Lieutenant Colonel Riyadh Mahmoud Abbas in the Interior Ministry, was shot dead by gunmen using weapons equipped with silencers in Baghdad's western district of Mansour. In another incident, gunmen using silenced weapons shot dead Ali Jasim Mohammed, an officer in the internal affairs department of the Interior Ministry, in Baghdad's northern district of al-Ateifiyah. Also in the capital, gunmen opened fire from their weapons fitted with silencers on an Iraqi army soldier while he was driving his vehicle in al-Amriyah district in western Baghdad.

Kyui John of Kenya has won the Third Nagpur International Marathon clocking the record timing of two hours fifteen minutes and twenty seconds. He was closely followed by his Ethiopian rival Afework Ayele Kibret who clocked two hours fifteen minutes and thirty two seconds while another Kenyan runner Sumbei Fredrick came third with the timing of two hours sixteen minutes and one second. The third version of the event arranged by the International Day for Non-Violence Organizing Committee and Maratha Lancers in Nagpur was totally dominated by the African athletes mainly comprising participants from Kenya and Ethiopia. The Indian challenge was headed by Vipul Kataria who registered the timing of two hours twenty nine minutes and nine seconds to take twentieth position while Dattatraya Jaibhaye followed him with two hours twenty nine minutes and forty two seconds. In the half-marathon for the women, Muia Jane Mwikali of Kenya won the race with the timing of one hour thirteen minutes and thirteen seconds. She was closely followed by her compatriots Muthio Kimuyu who clocked one hour thirteen minutes and fifteen seconds and Adimas Kasahun Mamo with one hour thirteen minutes and forty seven seconds. Kavita Raut finished thirteenth and first among the Indian athletes in the event clocking her best timing of one hour nineteen minutes and twenty three seconds.

In Australian Open Tennis tournament, Great Britain's Andy Murray is now playing Serbia's Novak Djokovic in the finals of the Men's Singles event. Earlier in the semi-finals, Djokovic stunned the World No. 2 Roger Federer while third seeded Murray defeated Spain's David Ferrer.

Both Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray will put their friendship aside when they battle for the Australian title today. The result will decide who fills the power vacuum left by the early exits of two Tennis giants Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. While Djokovic has one major title, which he claimed in 2008 at Melbourne, today's final offers Murray a third attempt to end Britain's 75-year long wait for a men's grand slam champion. The Scottish fifth seed came up well short in his two previous grand slam finals, a loser to Federer in straight sets at both the 2008 U.S. Open and again on Rod Laver Arena last year. A close contest would be expected from two players with a similar approach to the game. The two have a 4-3 head-to-head as professionals, with Djokovic having the edge, but Murray winning the last three.

Earlier today, in the final of the Mixed Doubles event, the second seeded Slovanian-Canadian combine of Katarina Srebotnik and Daniel Nestor defeated Taiwan's Yung-Jan Chan and Australia's Paul Hanley, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.

In an advisory to the students of Tri Valley University, the Embassy asked them to write to minca@indiagov.org and edu@indiacgny.org to seek guidance from the Indian authorities.
