प्रधानमंत्री डॉक्टर मनमोहन सिंह सत्य साईंबाबा को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करने के लिए कल पुट्टपार्थी जायेंगे। सरकारी सूत्रों ने बताया है कि अध्यात्मिक नेता को अपनी श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करने के बाद वे कल ही लौट आयेंगे। डॉक्टर मनमोहन सिंह ने साईंबाबा के निधन पर गहरा दुख व्यक्त किया है। अपने शोक संदेश में उन्होंने कहा है कि अध्यात्मिक गुरू ने लोगों को प्रेरणा दी कि अपने-अपने धर्मों का पालन करते हुए नैतिक मूल्यों के साथ अर्थपूर्ण जीवन जिया जा सकता है।

गृहमंत्री पी.चिदम्बरम ने कहा है कि पश्चिम बंगाल सबसे खराब प्रशासन वाले राज्यों में से है। कोलकाता में सॉल्ट लेक शहर में संवाद्दाता सम्मेलन को सम्बोधित करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि पश्चिम बंगाल में केवल कानून व्यवस्था की स्थिति की खराब नही है बल्कि आर्थिक स्थिति भी ठीक नहीं है। इस राज्य ने पिछले एक वर्ष में आठ बार ओवर ड्राफ्ट किया।

कानून और व्यवस्था की स्थिति के बारे में गृहमंत्री ने राज्य की मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी के नेतृत्व वाली सरकार पर अपने कार्यकर्ताओं को हिंसक गतिविधियों के लिए हथियार उपलब्ध कराने का आरोप लगाया। माओवादियों और तृणमूल कांग्रेस के बीच कथित संबंधों के बारे में एक प्रश्न के उत्तर में गृहमंत्री ने कहा कि तृणमूल कांग्रेस केन्द्र के इन विचारों का समर्थन करती है कि जब भी और जहां भी नक्सलवादी, हिंसा में लिप्त हों उनके साथ सख्+ती से निपटा जाए।

इस बीच निर्वाचन आयोग ने राज्य में विधानसभा चुनाव के तीसरे चरण पर नज+र रखने के लिए ओडीशा के मुख्य चुनाव अधिकारी एस.श्रीनिवासन को विशेष प्रेक्षक नियुक्त किया है। पचास सामान्य प्रेक्षक, ११ खर्च प्रेक्षक और दो पुलिस प्रेक्षक भी नियुक्त किए गए हैं।

छह चरणों में संपादित होने वाले पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा चुनाव के मध्य अब तीसरे चरण के चुनाव प्रचार की समाप्ति में कुछ घंटे ही बाकी है, पर आरोप-प्रत्यारोप का दौर जारी है। इस बीच, प्रत्याशियों तथा नेतागण तथा विभिन्न दलों के समर्थक घर घर जाकर सम्पर्क साधने के अलावा रोड शो, आम सभा, नुक्कड़ मीटिंग और छोटे छोटे गुटों में जुलूस निकालकर वोटरों को लुभाने के प्रयास में लगे हुए हैं। करो या मरों के राजनीतिक परिप्रेक्ष्य में एक ओर जहां कांग्रेस और तृणमूल गठबंधन ३४ साल के वाम शासन को उखाड़ फैंकने के हर संभव प्रयास में जुटे हैं तो वहीं सीपीएम भी सत्ता वापसी के हर हथकंडे अपना रही है जिसमें पार्टी से निष्कासित सोमनाथ चटर्जी और अशोक मित्रा द्वारा प्रचार भी शामिल है। लड़ाई वाकई कठिन है और जनता जागरूक पर खामोश है। -आकाशवाणी समाचार के लिए कोलकाता से अरिजीत चक्रवर्ती के साथ मैं शम्भुनाथ चौधरी।

गृहमंत्री पी. चिदम्बरम ने कहा है कि चालू वित्त वर्ष में देश करीब साढ़े आठ प्रतिशत वृद्धि दर हासिल करेगा। कोलकाता में संवाद्दाताओं से बातचीत में उन्होंने कहा कि देश की अर्थव्यवस्था बहुत अच्छी स्थिति में है। श्री चिदम्बरम ने कहा कि वैश्विक आर्थिक संकट के प्रभाव से भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्था को बचाने के लिए पहले दिए गए तीन सहायता पैकेजों से राजकोषीय और राजस्व घाटों पर असर पड़ा। लेकिन श्री चिदम्बरम ने आशा व्यक्त की कि इन दोनों मोर्चों पर निर्धारित लक्ष्य पूरे कर लिए जाएंगे। एक प्रश्न के उत्तर में उन्होंने कहा कि वैश्विक वित्तीय संकट के दौरान भी भारत ने २००८-०९ में ६ दशमलव सात प्रतिशत विकास दर हासिल की जो दुनिया में दूसरी सबसे अधिक थी और तब से विकास दर में वृद्धि का दौर जारी है।

गुजरात में एक अधिकारी द्वारा मुख्यमंत्री पर राज्य में दंगे भड़काने का आरोप लगाए लाने के बारे में एक प्रश्न का उत्तर देते हुए श्री चिदम्बरम ने कहा कि पिछले कुछ समय से ये आरोप चर्चा में थे। लेकिन पूरी जांच पड़ताल के बाद ही सच्चाई का पता चल सकेगा। सी बी आई के आरोप-पत्र में डी.एम.के नेता कनीमोझी का नाम आने की स्थिति में डी.एम.के मंत्रियों के यूपीए छोड़ने की कथित धमकी के बारे में पूछे जाने पर श्री चिदम्बरम ने कहा कि इस प्रश्न का कोई मतलब नहीं है।

पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा की महत्वपूर्ण सीटों में से एक है बहला पश्चिम, जो दक्षिण चौबीस परगना जिले में आती है। पश्चिम बंगाल में विपक्ष के नेता पार्थ चक्रवर्ती की उम्मीदवारी से इस सीट पर लड़ाई काफी रोचक हो गई है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि बहला पश्चिम की सीट में कोलकाता नगर निगम के दस वार्ड भी आते हैं।



१९७७ से लेकर १९९६ तक ५ बार वाम दलों ने बहला पश्चिम सीट पर कब्जा कर रखा हैं। २००१ के चुनाव में ये सीट तृणमूल के पास गर्इ्र। २००६ में तृणमूल ने इस सीट पर अपना कब्जा बरकरार रखा। पिछले कॉरपोरेशन चुनाव में और पिछले लोकसभा चुनाव में २००९ में तृणमूल कांग्रेस ने यहां इस असेबली सेगमेंट में यहां ३६ हजार वोटो से बढ़त ली थी । इस बार बहला पश्चिम में एक त्रिमुखी संघर्ष देखने को मिलेगी। बीजेपी, वामदल और तृणमूल कांग्रेस के साथ, हालांकि एक निर्दलीय उम्मीदवार भी अपना किस्मत आजमा रहें हैं। कुल मिला के बहला पश्चिम के वोटर हैं दो लाख ५९ हजार के करीब, जिसमें से एक लाख २९ हजार महिलाए हैं। १९८ बूथ इस बार बनाए जाएगें, बहला पश्चिम की इस कॉस्ंटीच्यूएंसी में, ताकि ये मतदाता अपने मतदान का प्रयोग कर सके। -सुदीप बनर्जी, आकाशवाणी समाचार, कोलकाता।

जम्मू कश्मीर में पंचायत चुनावों के चौथे चरण में आज कड़ी सुरक्षा के बीच १२ प्रखंडों में वोट डाले जा रहे हैं । इस चरण में तीन सो ४५ सरपंचों और दो हजार पांच सौ से अधिक पंचों का चुनाव हो रहा है। सरपंच के लिए दो हजार एक सौ से अधिक उम्मीदवार चुनाव लड़ रहे हैं जिनमें १८ महिलाएं हैं जबकि चार हजार चार सौ से ज्यादा उम्मीदवार पंचों के पद के लिए अपना भाग्य आजमा रहे हैं। दोपहर तक विभिन्न प्रखंडों में ४५ से ७० प्रतिशत तक मतदान की खबर है। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि मतदाताओं में काफी उत्साह देखा जा रहा है। मतदान केन्द्रों पर लंबी कतारें देखी जा रही हैं।

केन्द्रीय जांच ब्यूरो-सी बी आई ने आज राष्ट्रमंडल खेल आयोजन समिति के पूर्व अध्यक्ष सुरेश कलमाड़ी से क्वींस बैटन रिले से जुड़े घोटाले के बारे में पूछताछ की। उनसे ए.एम. कार्स एंड फिल्मस और टाइमर स्कोर बोर्ड से जुड़े मामलो को लेकर पूछताछ की गई। इस मामले में उनसे तीन बार पहले भी पूछताछ की जा चुकी है। सी बी आई का दो सदस्यों का दल क्वींस बैटन रिले घोटाले और अन्य मामलों की व्यापक जांच करने के बाद हाल में लंदन से लौटा है। श्री कलमाड़ी अब तक यही कह रहे हैं कि राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों से उन्होंने एक रूपये का भी लाभ नहीं उठाया। ब्यौरे के साथ हमारे संवाददाता-





लंदन जाने के पश्चात्‌ सीबीआई के दो सदस्यीय दल को कुछ नए पुख्ता सबूत हाथ लगे हैं जिनके आधार पर सुरेश कलमाड़ी से पूछताछ जारी है। लंदन में करवाई गई क्वींस बेटन रिले के दौरान ईएम फिल्म और कार्स ने टीवी फिल्मस और गाड़ियों का इंतजाम किया था जबकि आयोजन समिति की तरफ से उनसे कोई भी अनुबंध नहीं किया गया था। सीबीआई ने हैदराबाद स्थित एकेआर कंस्ट्रक्शंस के खाते में भी एक स्विस कंपनी द्वारा टाइमर्स और स्कोर बोर्ड के लिए १३ करोड़ रूपये जमा करवाने की बात कही है। काबिले गौर है कि यह रकम असल रकम से दोगुनी बताई जाती है। सीबीआई की जांच अब धीरे-धीरे ही सही, अब जोर पकड़ती जा रही है। जांच एजेंसी पहले ही आयोजन समिति के कई अफसरों को गिरफ्‌तार कर चुकी है और मीडिया में आई रिपोर्टों के अनुसार सुरेश कलमाड़ी को भी किसी भी वक्त हिरासत में लिया जा सकता है। -आकाशवाणी समाचार के लिए नई दिल्ली से सुरेश रैना के साथ मैं विनायक दत्त।

रक्षामंत्री ने इस क्षेत्र में मौजूदा सुरक्षा स्थिति के बारे में वायुसेना को सचेत किया है। नई दिल्ली में आज भारतीय वायुसेना कमांडरों के चार दिवसीय सम्मेलन का उद्घाटन करते हुए श्री ए० के० एंटनी ने लेह में आई बाढ़ और मिस्र और लीबिया से भारतीय नागरिकों को निकालने के कार्य में वायुसेना की मानवीय सहायता की सराहना भी की। उन्होंने वायुसेना की सुचारू गतिविधियों और रणनीति बनाने के क्षेत्र में योगदान की विशेष रूप से सराहना की। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि सम्मेलन में वायुसेना की क्षमता में वृद्धि, कार्रवाई की तैयारियों और आधुनिकीकरण की योजनाओं पर अधिक बल दिये जाने की सम्भावना है।



आधुनिक युद्ध के बदलते हुए मानक तौर-तरीकों के मद्देनजर सैनिक कार्रवाई की तत्परता का मूल्यांकन इस बैठक का अहम मुद्दा है। हालांकि वायुसेना ने अपने कम होते जा रहे स्क्वैड्रनों की संख्या को बढाने के लिए कुछ कदम उठाए हैं, फिर भी इसकी कमी से वायुसेना की तत्परता प्रभावित होने की स्थिति में इसपर चर्चा लाजमी है। इसके अलावा आधुनिकीकरण का मसला भी बैठक में छाए रहने की संभावना है क्योंकि कई अत्याधुनिक उपकरणों और हथियारों के साथ-साथ वायुसेना निकट भविष्य में १२६ अत्याधुनिक लड़ाकू विमान भी अपने बेड़े में शामिल करने वाली है। - आकाशवाणी समाचार के लिए दिल्ली से मणिकांत ठाकुर।

आइसलैंड के विदेशमंत्री ओसुर स्कारफेडिसन भारत की नौ दिन की यात्रा पर नई दिल्ली आए हैं। आज वे पर्यावरण तथा वनमंत्री जयराम रमेश से मुलाकात करेंगे। वे नवीन और नवीकरण ऊर्जा मंत्री फारूक अब्दुल्ला के साथ भी विचारों का आदान प्रदान करेंगे। कल विदेशमंत्री एस एम कुष्णा के साथ बातचीत में वे आपसी हित के विभिन्न मुद्दों पर विस्तृत चर्चा करेंगे। इसके अलावा आइसलैंड के विदेशमंत्री पर्यटन क्षेत्र में सहयोग बढ़ाने के लिए पर्यटन मंत्री सुबोधकांत सहाय के साथ बातचीत करेंगे।

सोने की कीमत २२ हजार ८१५ रूपये प्रति दस ग्राम की नई ऊंचाई पर पहुंच गई है। अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय बाजार में सोने की कीमतें बढने और डॉलर कमजोर होने तथा पश्चिम एशिया और उत्तरी अफ्रीका में बढ़ते तनाव के बीच सोने के दामों में वृद्धि हो रही है। निवेशकर्ता, बढ़ती मुद्रास्फीति और विश्व में हाल की राजनीतिक उथल-पुथल के बीच सोने में निवेश को सुरक्षित मान रहे हैं।

बम्बई शेयर बाजार में आज उतार-चढाव जारी है। शुरूआती कारोबार में सेंसेक्स में ७० अंक की गिरावट दर्ज की गई। अब से कुछ देर पहले यह ४० अंक की गिरावट/वृद्धि के साथ १९ हजार ६४२ पर था। नेशनल स्टाक एक्सचेंज का निफ्टी भी ५ अंक गिरकर/बढ़कर ५ हजार ८९० पर आ गया।

अर्न्तबैंक विदेशी मुद्रा बाजार में आज डॉलर के मुकाबले रूपया १८ पैसे कमजोर हुआ। एक डॉलर की कीमत ४४ रूपये ५४ पैसे बोली गयी।

उधर लीबिया, सीरिया और यमन में तनाव के कारण आज कच्चे तेल के दामों में वृद्धि दर्ज की गई। न्यूयार्क का लाइट स्वीट क्रूड ५२ सेंट महंगा होकर ११२ डॉलर ८१ प्रति बैरल हो गया। लंदन के ब्रेंट नॉर्थ सी क्रूड में भी ५४ सेंट की वृद्धि हुई और एक बैरल १२४ डॉलर ५३ सेंट का बोला गया।

प्रधानमंत्री की आर्थिक सलाहकार परिषद के अध्यक्ष सी रंगराजन के अनुसार नीति निर्धारकों के सामने मुद्रास्फीति, खासतौर पर खाद्यान्न के दामों पर दबाव से निपटना सबसे बड़ी चुनौती है। वे आज वडोदरा में गुजरात औद्योगिक परिसंघ द्वारा विकास पथ और इसके रास्ते में आने वाली कुछ चुनौतियां विषय पर आयोजित कार्यक्रम में बोल रहे थे। श्री रंगराजन ने कहा कि वे इस बात से सहमत नहीं कि उच्च विकास दर के लिए उच्च मुद्रास्फीति सही है। उन्होंने कहा कि मुद्रास्फीति की दर को और कम करने और इसे लगभग पांच प्रतिशत तक लाने के लिए हमें खाद्यान्न बाजार में हस्तक्षेप तथा वित्तीय और मौद्रिक नीतियों जैसे नीतिगत उपायों का इस्तेमाल करना चाहिए।

इंडोस्लफान कीटनाशक के उत्पादन पर पूरी तरह रोक लगाने की मांग को लेकर आज केरल में इंडोस्लफान विरोधी दिवस मनाया जा रहा है।

इंडोस्लफान के उत्पादन पर प्रतिबंध लगाने की मांग पर जोर देने के लिए आज राजधानी तिरूअनंतपुरम में भूख-हड़ताल रखी गयी है जिसका नेतृत्व मुख्यमंत्री वी एस अच्युतानंदन कर रहे हैं। इस मौके पर उन्होंने केन्द्र सरकार की इस रूख पर खेद व्यक्त किया कि इस मसले पर फैसला लेने से पहले अन्य राज्यों में इसके प्रभाव के बारे में और अध्ययन की जरूरत है। श्री अच्युतानंदन ने कहा कि अन्य राज्यों में इंडोस्लफान से उत्पन्न खतरों के बारे में लोगों में जागरूकता पैदा करने के लिए प्रयास तेज करने की जरूरत है। आज शाम समाप्त हो रही भूख-हड़ताल में समाज के विभिन्न वर्गों के लोग शामिल हैं। राज्य के विभिन्न भागों में सेमिनार आयोजित किए गए हैं और मानव श्रृखंला बनाई गई है।राज्य के मंत्री आज शाम जिला मुख्यालयों मे इंडोस्लफान विरोधी शपथ दिलायेंगे। ब्यौरे के साथ हमारे संवाददाता-



इण्डो सल्फान पर प्रतिबंध की मांग को लेकर चलाये जा रहे विरोध प्रदर्शन में सभी राजनीतिक दल शामिल हो रहे हैं। कीटनाशकों के प्रयोग से केरल और कर्नाटक के कई भागों में मानव जीवन के प्रति पैदा हुए खतरों को देखते हुए कीटनाशकों पर प्रतिबंध की मांग को लेकर ये विरोध प्रदर्शन किये जा रहे हैं। आज जिनेवा में शुरू हो रहे स्टॉकहोम सम्मेलन के अवसर पर ये आंदोलन चलाया जा रहा है, ताकि कीटनाशकों के दुष्परिणाम पर चर्चा हो और इसे प्रतिबंधित किया जाए। हालांकि केरल में कांग्रेस इस आंदोलन में शामिल नहीं है लेकिन इस पार्टी के नेता आज नई दिल्ली में प्रधानमंत्री से मुलाकात कर इस मसले पर उनका ध्यान आकर्षित करेंगे। कोच्चि से राजमोहन की रिपोर्ट के साथ मैं श्रीकांत श्रीवास्तव, आकाशवाणी समाचार दिल्ली।

आन्ध्रप्रदेश में आज सुबह गुन्टूर जिले के साथेनापल्ली गांव के निकट एक ट्रेक्टर के नहर में गिरने से कम से कम ९ महिलाओं की मौत हो गई और पांच घायल हो गई। जिला पुलिस के अनुसार करीब २५ कृषि मजदूर मिर्च की फसल तोड़ने के लिए इस ट्रैक्टर ट्रॉली पर जा रहे थे। मृतक महिलाओं में ज्यादातर वोडापल्ली गांव की थी। नौ शव निकाले जा चुके हैं और पांच घायलों को उपचार के लिए पास के अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया है। अन्य लोगों की तलाश जारी है।

मुख्यमंत्री एन० किरण कुमार रेड्डी ने इस घटना पर शोक व्यक्त किया है और मृतकों के परिवारों को आपातबंधु योजना के तहत एक-एक लाख रूपये की अनुग्रह राशि देने की घोषणा की है। उन्होंने अधिकारियों को, घायलों को हरसम्भव चिकित्सा सहायता उपलब्ध कराने का निर्देैश भी दिया है।

खाप पंचायतों ने उच्चतम न्यायालय की इस टिप्पणी पर पुनर्विचार याचिका दायर करने का फैसला किया है कि कंगारू अदालतें बर्बर और अवैध हैं। न्यायालय ने इस महीने की १९ तारीख को एक मुकदमे की सुनवाई के दौरान टिप्पणी की थी कि ऐसी अदालतों के गठन की प्रवृत्ति, झूठी इज्ज+त के नाम पर हत्याएं, उत्तर भारत में खाप पंचायतें और तमिलनाडु में कट्टा पंचायते बर्बर और अवैध हैं तथा अवैध गतिविधियों में शामिल लोगों के खिलाफ कड़ी कार्रवाई हो।

बीनैन खाप के अध्यक्ष नफेसिंह नैन के अनुसार याचिका दायर करने का फैसला ८४ खाप पंचायतों के प्रतिनिधियों की कल हुई बैठक में लिया गया। प्रतिनिधियों ने इस मुद्दे पर संसद के आगामी मॉनसून सत्र के दौरान दिल्ली में अनिश्चितकालीन भूख हड़ताल रखने का भी फैसला किया। उन्होंने विधेयक के माध्यम से खाप पंचायतों पर रोक लगाने के किसी भी प्रयास का विरोध किया है।

आज विश्व मलेरिया दिवस है। वर्ष २००७ में विश्व स्वास्थ्य सम्मेलन के दौरान विश्व मलेरिया दिवस की शरूआत की गई थी जिसका उद्देश्य मलेरिया उन्मूलन प्रयासों को तेज करना था। विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन ने कहा है कि वर्ष २००९ में करीब तीन अरब, ३० करोड़ लोग मलेरिया की चपेट में थे। विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन का कहना है कि गरीब देशों में इस रोग का ज्यादा प्रकोप होता है। प्रतिवर्ष करीब २५ करोड़ लोग मलेरिया के शिकार होते हैं। अफ्रीका के सहारा क्षेत्रों में पांच वर्ष से कम आयु के बच्चों के लिए यह बीमारी बहुत घातक सिद्ध हुई है।

अफगानिस्तान में कंधार शहर के मुख्य कारागार से चार सौ से अधिक कैदी फरार हो गये हैं। फरार कैदियों में तालिबान आतंकवादी भी हैं। कारागार निरीक्षक गुलाम दस्तगीर मयार के हवाले से हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि करीब ४७६ कैदी, बाहर से कारागार तक सुरंग खोदकर फरार होने में सफल हो गये। इनमें से अधिकतर तालिबानी आतंकवादी गतिविधियों में शमिल होने के कारण बंदी बनाये गये थे।



कंधार जेल से तालिबानी कैदियों का फरार होना महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि पिछले एक साल के दौरान कंधार के तालिबान के विरूद्ध सैन्य अभियान तेज हुआ था और तालिबान की शक्ति कम हुई थी। इस घटना से तालिबान को पुनः सिर उठाने का मौका मिल सकता है और कंधार और आस-पास के प्रांतों में हिंसक गतिविधियां तेज हो सकती हैं। एक तालिबानी प्रवक्ता के अनुसार उनके संगठन ने ५ महीनों में बाहर से ३६० मीटर सुरंग बनाकर कैदियों को छुड़ाया और इसे खुफिया विभाग की विफलता भी कहा जा सकता है कि उन्हें इतने लम्बी समय तक ये खबर न लगी। फिलहाल सुरक्षा एजेंसियों ने कैदियों को पकड़ने का अभियान छेड़ रखा है और कुछ लोगों को पुनः हिरासत में लिया गया है। - आकाशवाणी समाचार के लिए काबुल से संतोष कुमार।

ईरान और इराक ने एक दूसरेके बंदियों के प्रर्त्यपण के बारे में एक संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किए हैं। इसमें इन बंदियों को स्वदेश भेजने का भी प्रावधान हैं। ईरान के प्रेस टीवी के अनुसार इराक के न्याय मंत्री हसन-अल शामरी और ईरान के न्याय मंत्री मुर्तज+ा बख्तियारी ने कल तेहरान में इस संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किए।



समझौते के तहत दोनों देश एक दूसरे के क्षेत्र में मौजूद अपराधियों और बंदियों की अदला-बदली कर सकेंगे, जिनमें ईरान के विरोधी संगठन एमकेओ के सदस्य भी शामिल होंगे जो इराक में लम्बे समय से रह रहे हैं। वियाला के कैम्प अशरफ में संगठन के लोग शरणार्थी के तौर पर रह रहे हैं, जो सद्दाम हुसैन के समय से स्थित है और जिन्हें हुसैन सरकार ने ईरान के खिलाफ इस्तेमाल किया था लेकिन सद्दाम हुसैन के सत्ता से हटाए जाने के बाद ये संगठन इराक सरकार की आंखों की किरकिरी बना हुआ है, जो ईरान से अपने संबंधों को सुधारना चाहती है। ईरान एमकेओ को आतंकी संगठन मानता है। इसी महीने आठ अप्रैल को इराकी सेना द्वारा एमकेओ के कैम्प पर धावा बोला गया, जिसमें ३४ सदस्य मारे गए थे। -धीरेन्द्र ओझा, आकाशवाणी समाचार।

The second day after Sai Baba breathed his last, Puttaparthy is immersed in a sea of humanity. Devotees from all parts of the country and abroad are bracing the heat waiting for hours to pay their last respects to the departed soul. The Ananthpur District Collector B Janardhan Reddy said that amongst others, Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and his wife Anjali, Union ministers Vilas Rao Deshmukh and Praful Patel visited Prashanti Nilayam today. Our correspondent reports that more than one lakh devotees are likely to come in to town today.

After the demise of Sai baba, Puttaparthy remains shut down. But there is no sense of grief among those who are worshipper of Sai Baba since many years. Most of the devotees I spoke to, did not express anguish at Sai Baba’s death. They said he has just left his body, the soul remains immortal. They believed that Baba will be reborn as Prema Sai in Gunapathi near Mandya in Karnataka. Irmgard Maria from Germany who did not visit the departed spiritual guru’s body kept in glass case, said Sai baba remains in her living memory and Puttaparthi will remain a place of pilgrimage for her. She said Sai Baba has thought that God is within us and hence the feeling that Baba has left us, is never there in her. To talk about arrangements made for the disciples, the District collector admitted that there is shortage of food joints since all the shops are closed. He said suitable arrangements will be made for food distribution shortly and those charging more from the devotees will be cautioned suitably. Police are making public announcements and helping people to follow routes demarcated for them. Women and Men are provided separated lanes to enter the Sai Kulwant Hall, where the body of Sai Baba is kept. According to the official sources the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit Puttaparthi tomorrow to pay his respects to the late Satya Sai Baba and return the same day. In his condolence message Dr.Singh yesterday expressed profound grief over SaiBaba's death. The Prime Minister said that he was a spiritual leader who inspired millions to lead a moral and meaningful life even as they followed the religion of their choice.

The Home Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram today said that West Bengal is one of India's worst-governed States. Addressing a press conference at Salt Lake city in Kolkata he said, not only is the law and order situation extremely bad in West Bengal, but its cash position is also precarious as the State has had to resort to an overdraft eight times during the last one year. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has appointed S.Srinivasan, the Chief Electoral officer of Odisha as special observer for overseeing the third phase Assembly polls. Our correspondent reports that campaigning is in full swing in all the 75 seats spread over Kolkata, North and South 24 Pargana districts with Bollywood stars also hitting the campaign trail.

One of the key constituencies in the West Bengal Assembly elections is the Behala (West) constituency which comes under the South 24 Parganas district. We have more from our correspondent.

It may be mentioned that from 1977 to 1996 in five consecutive election the left had won the Behala (West) seat. In the 2001 election the seat win to Trinamool Congress and was retained by the party in 2006. In the last corporation election, just as in the 2009 Lok Sabha election the Trinamool candidate led by more than 36 thousand votes in this Assembly segment. This time Behala (West) will witness a triangular contest with BJP, the left and the Trinamool Congress in the fray, although there is also an Independent candidate. The Home Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram today said that India will achieve about 8.5 per cent growth rate this fiscal. Briefing the media in Kolkata, he said that the country's ecnomic health is very good and the government is already on fiscal correction path. Mr. Chidambaram said that three stimulus packages given earlier to shelter Indian economy from the impact of global melt down have affected fiscal and revenue deficits. But Mr. Chidambaram expressed hope that on both these fronts, FRBM targets will be met. In reply to a question, he said, even during the global financial crisis, India has achieved 6.7 per cent growth in 2008-2009, the second highest in the world and since then the rising growth path continues. On the question of officers alleging that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi instigated riots, Mr. Chidambaram said that these allegations were up in the air for quite some time. The Home Minister, however, added that only after proper investigation, the truth will come out.

Khap Panchayats have decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court after the apex court's observation that kangaroo courts were "barbaric and illegal". The decision to file the petition was taken yesterday at a meeting of 84 representatives of Khap panchayats. The members have also decided to start an indefinite fast in Delhi during the forthcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament in this regard. They also decided to oppose any move to ban Khap Panchayats through a legislation. Earlier, the Supreme Court had observed that the new trend of kangaroo courts, honour killings, "khap" panchayats in northern India and "katta" panchayats in Tamil Nadu were barbaric and illegal, the perpetrators of which should be given the harshest punishment. On the issue of reservation for Jats, the members decided to unite all the Jat organisations under the banner of Sarv Khap Panchayats.

In Andhra Pradesh, at least 9 women were killed and five more injured when a tractor fell into a canal near Sathenapalli in Guntur District this morning. District Police said about 25 agriculture labourers, most of them women, belonging to Voddepalli were going in a tractor trolley for harvesting work in chilli fields. So far ,9 bodies have been retrieved and the five injured were admitted in a nearby hospital for treatment. Police also said search operations are underway for the others.

Commonwealth Games Organising Committee former Chairman Suresh Kalmadi was today questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation, CBI in connection with Queens baton relay scam. The Investigating Agency quizzed him in cases relating to AM cars and films and timer score board cases. Earlier, he has been grilled three times in the case. A two-member CBI team has returned from London recently after carrying out extensive investigations into the Queens baton relay scam and other cases. So far, Mr. Kalmadi has maintained that he hasn't benefitted in any way from the CWG. More from our correspondent.

The two member CBI team that visited London in connection with the case gathered some fresh leads about the scam. AM films and cars was contracted by organising committee for supplying video screens and cars for the Queen's baton relay with no contract in place. CBI has also got to know that a sum of 13 crore rupees was allegedly deposited in a Hydrabad based firm AKR Conustruction's account by a Swiss firm that got the time scoring equipment contract. In Kerala, demanding a complete ban on the production of Endosulfan pesticide, the state is observing Anti-Endosulfan Day today. The protest coincides with the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants beginning in Geneva today, which will decide the banning of a few pesticides, including endosulfan.

In the capital Thiruvananthapuram, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan is leading a fast demanding a ban on the production of endosulfan. Our correspondents reports that the Congress-led UDF has kept away from the protest, accusing the Chief Minister of politicising the issue.

The protest is an attempt to focus attention on the need to ban a pesticide, which has wrecked havoc on the lives of many in parts of Kerala and Karnataka. It coincides with the beginning of the Stock Holm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in Geneva today, which will discuss the demand for a world wide ban on endosulfan and a few other pesiticides. Seminars, human chains and anti-endosulfan pledges are also being held in different parts of Kerala, in support of the demand for a ban. Although the Congress has kept away from the state sponsored protest, the party leaders are meeting the Prime Minister in Delhi , in a bid to impress upon him on the need to ban the pesticide. While Kerala and Karnataka have demanded banning the production of endosulfan, this has not found favour with the union government and other states. The centre is of the view that endosulfan is a broad spectrum pesticide with several applications, and further studies in other regions are needed before a national ban on its production is imposed. In Afghanistan, more than 400 prisoners including dozens of Taliban militants have escaped from the main prison in Kandahar city. Prison supervisor Ghulam Dastagir Mayar said today that they estimate about 476 prisoners escaped through a tunnel they had dug to the outside. He says the jailbreak took place last night and that many of those missing were held for Taliban-led militancy. Kandahar prison in the south holds about 1,200 inmates. A Taliban spokesman confirmed the escape saying about 100 of them are Taliban commanders and many of the others are fighters. We have more from our correspondent.

The escape of militants is a significant development as Kandahar has been the focus of anti-Taliban operations by NATO forces and the incident can provide Taliban with an advantage. A Taliban spokesman said the 360-metre tunnel through which the prisoners escaped, was built over last five months by militant group from outside and as such can be termed an intelligence failure. Security agencies have launched a massive operation to nab the prisoners and at least eight of them have been re-arrested so far. Iran and Iraq have signed agreements on the extradition of each other’s detainees, including provisions for the repatriation of convicts to their country of origin. According to Iranian semi official Press TV, Iraqi Justice Minister Hassan al-Shammari and his Iranian counterpart Morteza Bakhtiari signed the deals in Tehran yesterday.
The channel reported that the Iraqi minister reiterated his country's stance about the anti-Iran terrorist organization Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO), stating that Baghdad is determined to expel members of the group from Iraq by the end of 2011. The agreements includes provisions for the repatriation of each other’s criminals and convicts to their country of origin, which could include members of the an Iranian opposition group- the People's Mujahedeen (MKO), which has been based in Iraq since long. The members of MKO are living as refugees at Camp Ashraf in Diyala since the time of Saddam Hussain regime, which saw them as a convenient ally against Iran. But after the overthrow of Saddam Hussain , they have become an irritant to Iraq's new government, which is trying to bolster ties with Iran. In Yemen, protests continue despite the government’s acceptance of the plan of the Gulf Co-operation Council on 23rd April. Yesterday, defiant protesters camping out in Yemen's capital, Sana'a and also in the second city of Taiz demanded that President Ali Abdullah Saleh step down immediately. This was despite the fact that President Saleh's ruling party had accepted a 30-day exit plan proposed by the Gulf Cooperation Council. A leading activist, Abdulmalik Al Yusufi, at a sit-in demonstration in Sana'a's University Square, has been quoted as saying that there is a consensus on rejecting the initiative, proposed by the Gulf Cooperation Council.

NATO forces have flattened a building inside Muammar Gaddafi's Bab al-Aziziyah compound early today. According to a press official from Gaddafi's government , 45 people were hurt in the strike, 15 of them seriously, and some were still missing. Gaddafi's compound has been struck before, but NATO forces appear to be stepping up the campaign in Tripoli in recent days. The United States, Britain and France say they will not stop their air strikes over Libya until Gaddafi leaves power. Meanwhile, Government troops bombarded the western rebel bastion of Misrata again yesterday, a day after announcing their withdrawal following a two month siege.

Hundreds of Syrian troops moved into the southern town of Daraa early today, where heavy shooting was heard, according to a political militant on the scene. Activist Abdullah Al-Harriri told AFP in Nicosia that the men were firing in all directions. Electricity is cut off and telephone communications are virtually impossible, he said. The current protests against the regime started in Daraa where dozens of Syrians have been killed in the violent repression of demonstrations by the security forces. At least 352 people have been killed in Syria since protests began last month.

Japan today launched a massive search for thousands of bodies still missing more than six weeks after disaster struck the country. The Japanese Defence Ministry said the military search, also involving police and coastguard officers and US forces, is the third of its kind after earlier sweeps recovered a total of 438 bodies. Nearly 24,800 troops are searching the tsunami-ravaged north-east coast for the bodies still missing. More than 14,340 people were killed in the 9.0-magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami last month, while 11,889 are still missing amid fears that many of them were swept into the Pacific Ocean and will never be found.

The four-day Indian Air Force commanders’ conference kicked off in New Delhi this morning. It was inaugurated by the Defence Minister, Mr. AK Antony. Air Chief Marshal PV Naik is chairing the conference. Our correspondent reports that capability enhancement, operational preparedness and modernisation plans are likely to top the agenda during the brain storming sessions. The security scenario and threat perception may also figure prominently during the meeting.

A data based review of the operational preparedness and battle worthiness is likely to gain prominence in the backdrop of induction of network centric warfare tactics and information technology. Though the IAF has taken steps to address the issue of its depleting squadron strength, the matter is also likely to come up as the paucity of squadrons can hamper the operational readiness. The force now has 30-odd squadrons as compared to the projected 35 squadrons. Besides this, the modernisation process will also be reviewed as the IAF is now inducting transport planes, helicopters and upgrading its arsenal. In a major acquisition for enhancing its capabilities, the Air force is also likely to get a green signal from the government for the purchase of 126 medium multi-role aircraft by the end of this year. Managing inflationary pressure, particularly in foodgrain prices, is the biggest challenge before policymakers, according to C. Rangarajan, the chairman of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council. Rangarajan was speaking on the topic, 'The growth path and some concerns on the way', at a function at the Federation of Gujarat Industries (FGI) in Vadodara today. Mr Rangarajan said he does not subscribe to the idea that high growth demanded a higher level of inflation He said that we must use all of our policy instruments such as interventions in the grain market, fiscal and monetary policies in order to bring down inflation further and re-anchor inflationary expectations to the 5 per cent comfort zone.

Rupee was down by 19 paise at 44.55 per US dollar in early trade today on persistent month-end dollar demand from importers and banks. It hovered in a range between 44.44 and 44.55 per dollar in morning deals. Sustained dollar demand from importers, mainly oil refiners, affected the rupee value against the dollar, a forex dealer said.

Oil prices were up in Asian trade today with prices having risen above 124 dollars a barrel after violence in Syria and Yemen escalated over the weekend, boosting fears that unrest may disrupt more oil supplies in the Middle East and North Africa. Brent gained 29 cents to 124.28 dollars a barrel by 0502 GMT whereas U.S. crude rose 38 cents to 112.67 dollars a barrel.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the 4th phase of Panchayat elections in 12 blocks of Jammu and Kashmir Divisions is going on smoothly amid tight security arrangements. The World Health Organization says about 3.3 billion people in 2009 - half of the world's population - were at a risk of contracting malaria. WHO says, people living in the poorest countries are most vulnerable. There are about 250 million malaria cases every year. It is the biggest killer of children under the age of five in sub-Saharan Africa.
