मुम्बई के वानखेड़े स्टेडियम में क्रिकेट विश्वकप फाइनल में श्रीलंका ने भारत के सामने 275 रन का लक्ष्य रखा है। भारत ने ताज+ा समाचार मिलने तक 22 ओवर में 3 विकेट पर 115 रन बना लिए हैं। इससे पहले श्रीलंका ने निर्धारित 50 ओवर में 6 विकेट पर 274 रन बनाए।
करोड़ों लोगों की दुआओं के बीच लक्ष्य का पीछा करने उतरी भारत की शुरूआत खराब रही और विस्फोटक बल्लेबाज+ वीरेन्द्र सहवाग पहले ही ओवर की दूसरी गेंद पर बिना खाता खोले पवैलियन लौट गए। सचिन शतकों का शतक लगाने से आज भी चूक गए और 18 रन बनाकर आउट हो गए। इससे पहले, धीमी शुरूआत के बावजूद श्रीलंका ने महेला जयवर्धने की रणनीति और आक्रामकता से भरी शतकीय पारी और मध्यक्रम के बाद के बल्लेबाजों के धमाल से संघर्षपूर्ण लक्ष्य रखा। महेला जयवर्धने ने जहां शानदार 103 रन बनाए वहीं कुलाशेखरा ने 32 और परेरा ने 10 गेंदों में आतिशी 22 रन बनाए। भारतीय गेंदबाजों ने शुरू में जितनी कसी हुई गेंदबाजी की, बाद में वे उतने ही ढीले साबित हुए और श्रीलंका ने पावरप्ले के आखिरी पांच ओवर में ताबड़तोड़ 63 रन बनाये।
फिलहाल विराट कोहली आउट हो चुके हैं और गौतम गम्भीर ने अर्धशतक लगाकर एक मोर्चा संभाला हुआ है और क्रिकेट प्रेमी अब टूर्नामेंट में अब तक कोई खास प्रदर्शन नहीं कर पाए कप्तान धोनी से लम्बी पारी की उम्मीद कर रहे हैं। बहरहाल सड़कें सुनसान हैं और सभी देशवासियों की नज+रें मैच पर टिकी हुई हैं और सभी की बस एक ही ख्वाहिश है कि इस बार ट्रॉफी हमारे हाथों में आए।

टू-जी स्पैक्ट्रम मामले में सीबीआई ने पूर्व दूरसंचार मंत्री ए. राजा के साथ-साथ तीन निजी कंपनियों के खिलाफ पहला आरोपपत्र दायर किया है। आज नई दिल्ली में सीबीआई की प्रवक्ता धारिणी मिश्र ने बताया कि इन लोगों पर भारतीय दंड संहिता की विभिन्न धाराओं के तहत धोखाधड़ी, षडयंत्र और भ्रष्टाचार के आरोप लगाए गए हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि टू-जी स्पैक्ट्रम के आवंटन और लाइसेन्स जारी करने की जांच में सीबीआई ने कई अनियमितताएं पायी हैं।

वर्ष 2008-09 के दौरान यूनिफाइड एक्सेस सर्विस लाइसेंस जारी करने एवं बाद में 2-जी स्पेक्ट्रम के आवंटन के मामले की जांच में पाया गया है कि भारतीय दंड संहिता और भ्रष्टाचार निवारण के अधिनियम के संदर्भ धाराओं के तहत आरोप लगाये गये हैं।
हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि अस्सी हजार पन्ने के आरोपपत्र में सीबीआई ने बताया कि टू-जी स्पैक्ट्रम आवंटन में सरकारी खजाने को 30 हजार 980 करोड़ रूपये का नुकसान हुआ। आरोप पत्र में 125 गवाहों तथा 654 दस्तावेजों का उल्लेख है।
सीबीआई ने आज दिल्ली की एक अदालत में 80 हजार से अधिक पृष्ठों की चार्जशीट जिसमें पूर्व टेलीकॉम मंत्री ए0 राजा सहित पूर्व टेलीकॉम सचिव सिद्धार्थ विहुरिया का नाम भी शामिल है। सीबीआई ने भारतीय दंड संहिता और भ्रष्टाचार निरोधक कानून के तहत रिलायंस टेलीकॉम यूनिटेक वायलेस और स्वेन टेलीफोन कम्पनियों के नाम भी इस चॉर्जशीट में दाखिल किये हैं। ए0 राजा उनके निजी सचिव आर के चंदोलिया, सिद्धार्थ विहुरिया और स्वेन टेलीकॉम के शाहिद उस्मान बलवा पर धोखाधड़ी हेराफेरी और भ्रष्टाचार के तहत मामला दर्ज किया गया है।

असम में विधानसभा चुनाव के पहले चरण का प्रचार आज शाम समाप्त हो गया। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि इस चरण में 62 निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों में सोमवार को मतदान होगा।
अनेक राजनैतिक दलों के बड़े-बड़े नेता और उनके समर्थक अभिनेता रात-दिन चुनाव प्रचार में लगे रहे। उन्होंने प्रचार के पारम्परिक तरीकों के साथ साथ आधुनिक तौर तरीकों को भी अपनाया। पहले चरण में सात जिलों के 62 निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों के 485 उम्मीदवारों के भाग्य का फैसला होगा। इसके लिए एक हजार दो सौ 26 मतदान केन्द्र बनाये गये हैं। मतदान सोमवार सुबह सात बजे से शुरू होकर दोपहर तीन बजे तक चलेगा। अल्फा के परेश बरूआ गुट के 12 घंटे के असम का आज जनजीवन पर आंशिक असर पड़ा। लेकिन राज्य में प्रधानमंत्री प्रचार अभियान पर कोई असर नहीं पड़ा। प्रधानमंत्री ने ढेकुआखाना और जुरिया में चुनावी सभाओं को सम्बोधित किया। उन्होंने आशा व्यक्त की कि अल्फा के नेताओं के साथ बातचीत के अनुकूल परिणाम आयेगे। प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि लोगों की आकांक्षाएं पूरी करने और विभिन्न वगोर्ं को न्याय देने की भारतीय संविधान में पर्याप्त गुंजाइश है।
अल्फा के अध्यक्ष अरविन्द राजखोवा के गुट ने लोगों से बंद के बहिष्कार की अपील की थी। इस गुट ने आम जनता का,े निर्दोष लोगों की हत्या और हिंसा के खिलाफ सामने आने को कहा।
बराक घाटी से हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि असम में चुनाव प्रचार में उग्रवाद मुख्य मुद्दा बनकर छाया हुआ है।

1991 से ही विभिन्न उग्रवादी संगठनों द्वारा चुनाव के समय डर माहौल कायम कर लोगों को मतदान का बहिष्कार करने को कहा जाता रहा है। परन्तु इस बार कई उग्रवादी संगठनों द्वारा आत्म समर्पण करने के कारण या फिर सरकार से बातचीत शुरू हो जाने के कारण चुनाव शांतिपूर्वक सम्पन्न हो जाने की पूरी संभावना है। हालांकि उग्रवाद राज्य से पूरी तरह खत्म नहीं हुआ है फिर भी हिंसक घटनाओं में कमी के साथ लोगों की सोच में भी परिवर्तन आया है।

पश्चिम बंगाल में विधानसभा चुनाव प्रचार जोरों पर है। दूसरे चरण के चुनाव के लिये अब तक 38 नामांकन पत्र भरे गये हैं। इस चरण में मुर्शिदाबाद, नदिया और बीरभूम जिलों की पचास सीटों के लिये 23 अप्रैल को मतदान होगा। पर्चे भरने की अंतिम तारीख छह अप्रैल है। पहले चरण के चुनाव में उत्तरी बंगाल में छह जिलों में विधानसभा की 54 सीटों के लिये कुल 401 नामांकन पत्र भरे गये हैं। तीसरे चरण के चुनाव के लिये आज अधिसूचना जारी की गई।

तमिलनाडु में, बढ़ती गर्मी के बीच, चुनाव प्रचार भी जोर पकड़ रहा है। जैसे-जैसे मतदान का दिन नजदीक आ रहा है, व्यक्तिगत आरोप - प्रत्यारोपों के तीर और नुकीले होते जा रहे हैं। डीएमके अध्यक्ष एम करूणानिधि और ऑल इंडिया अन्ना डीएमके प्रमुख जयललिता धुआंधार प्रचार में जुटे हैं। धर्मपुरी जिले में एक चुनावी सभा में श्री करूणानिधि ने कहा कि 2006 के विधानसभा चुनाव के सभी वायदे पूरे किये गये हैं।
कन्याकुमारी और तिरूनेलवेल्ली जिले में ए आई ए डी एम के की नेता सुश्री जयललिता ने राज्य सरकार पर महंगाई, बिजली कटौती और कानून व्यवस्था में गिरावट का आरोप लगाया।
वरिष्ठ राष्ट्रीय नेता, कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष सोनिया गांधी , मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी के प्रकाश करात और भाजपा नेता अरूण जेटली एक-दो दिन में चुनावी सभाओं को सम्बोधित करेंगें।
चुनाव प्रचार में तेजी आने के साथ ही आचार संहिता के उल्लंघन की शिकायतें भी बढ़ रही है।ं इन की संख्या पचास हजार से अधिक हो गई है। बिना हिसाब-किताब के 20 करोड़ रूपये नकद जब्त किये गये हैं। इसमें से पांच करोड रूपय,े हिसाब मिलने पर, वापस कर दिये गये।

उधर, केरल में दूसरे चरण का प्रचार अभियान तेज हो गया है। कांग्रेस नेता और केन्द्रीय नागरिक उडड्यन मंत्री वायलार रवि कल तिरूवनंतपुरम में चुनावी सभा करेंगे।
विभिन्न राजनैतिक दलों के प्रमुख नेता हालांकि आज भी चुनावी सभायें करते रहे लेकिन राज्य के ज्यादातर शहरों और कस्बों में युवा मतदाता इन सब से दूर टीवी पर हो रहे फाइनल मुकाबले में मशगुल दिखाई पड़े। तिरूअंतपुरम में ऐसा नजारा कई जगह दिखाई पड़ा। इस बीच चुनाव प्रेक्षकों ने उम्मीदवारों को आदर्श आचार संहिता का अनुपालन सुनिश्चि करने का निर्देश देते हुए पोस्टर बैनरों आदि का पूरा लेखा जोखा प्रस्तुत करने को कहा है। मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी के नेतृत्व वाले एल डी एफ के चुनाव प्रचार में मुख्यमंत्री वी. एस. अच्युतानंदन सभी 14 जिलों में जुट गये हैं। वरिष्ठ भाजपा नेता अरूण जेटली कल राज्य का दौरा करेंगें।

निर्वाचन आयोग ने महाराष्ट्र के पूर्व मुख्य मंत्री अशोक चव्हाण के पेड न्यूज मामले की सुनवाई करने का फैसला किया है। आयोग के अधिकार को लेकर श्री चव्हाण के वकील अभिषेक सिंघवी कीे आपत्तियों को निर्वाचन आयोग ने नामंजूर कर दिया। आयोग ने कहा है कि वह इस मामले की जांच कर सकता है।
महाराष्ट्र में भोकर विधानसभा सीट से निर्दलीय उम्मीदवार माधव किनहालकर की शिकायत पर आयोग ने यह फैसला किया है।

भारतीय जनता पार्टी ने गोवा के मुख्य मंत्री दिगम्बर कामत से शिक्षा मंत्री श्री मान्सरेट को बर्खास्त करने की मांग की है। आज मुम्बई हवाई अड्डे पर श्री मान्सरेट से बिना हिसाब-किताब की भारतीय और विदेशी मुद्रा पकड़ी गई।

राष्ट्रीय राजधानी क्षेत्र में आज से सी.एन.जी. की कीमत में तीस पैसे प्रति किलोग्राम की वृद्धि की जा रही है। इंद्रप्रस्थ गैस लिमिटेड ने बताया है कि आज आधी रात से दिल्ली में सी.एन.जी. 29 रुपये 30 पैसे प्रति किलो और नोएडा, ग्रेटर नोएडा तथा गाजि+याबाद में 32 रुपये 85 पैसे प्रति किलो की दर से मिलेगी। कंपनी के प्रबंध निदेशक राजेश वेदव्यास ने बताया कि सरकार द्वारा न्यूनतम मजदूरी में संशोधन की वजह से संचालन का खर्च बढ़ गया था, इसलिए यह मामूली वृद्धि जरूरी हो गई थी।

विश्व बैंक ने भारत को राष्ट्रीय ई-गवर्नेंस योजना तेजी से लागू करने के लिए 15 करोड़ डॉलर का ऋण मंजूर किया है। इस ऋण के जरिए नीतिगत और संस्थागत कार्य किये जायेंगे, जिसका सभी सेवाओं पर उचित प्रभाव पडे+गा। बैंक ने कहा है कि वह सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी के एक ही ढांचे के जरिए काम करने के वास्ते राष्ट्रीय ई-गवर्नेंस योजना में मदद देगा।

लीबिया में विद्रोहियों ने प्रमुख तेल शहर ब्रेगा पर फिर से कब्जा करने का दावा किया है। लेकिन शहर के बाहरी इलाके में विद्रोहियों का एक गुट पश्चिमी गठबंधन सेनाओं के हवाई हमले की चपेट में आ गया जिससे दस लोग मारे गये। विद्रोहियों के दावे की तुरंत पुष्टि नहीं हो पायी है। राजधानी त्रिपोली से 800 किलोमीटर पूर्व में ब्रेगा शहर में पिछले कुछ दिनों से कर्नल गद्दाफी की सेना और विद्रोहियों के बीच घमासान लड़ाई चल रही थी। बृहस्पतिवार से अभी तक यह स्पष्ट नहीं हो पाया है कि शहर पर किसका नियत्रण है।

आईवरी कोस्ट के प्रमुख शहर आबिदजान में आज तीसरे दिन भी प्रतिद्वंदी सेनाओं के बीच संघर्ष जारी है। अंतर्राष्ट्रीय तौर पर मान्य राष्ट्रपति अलासाने ओआत्रा के वफादार सैनिक राष्ट्रपति महल पर कब्जा के लिए संघर्ष कर रहे हैं। चुनाव हार चुके राष्ट्रपाति लारेन ग्बाग्बो के वफादार सैनिकों का नियंत्रण बना हुआ है। ग्बाग्बो का कोई अतापता नहीं है और शहर में स्थिति भी स्पष्ट नहीं है।
इस सप्ताह हुई हिंसक झड़पों में कम से कम आठ सौ लोगों के मारे जाने की खबर है। अंतर्राष्ट्रीय रेड क्रास संगठन के अनुसार पश्चिमी शहर डूईकोई का दौरा करने के बाद बताया कि स्थिति काफी गंभीर है। हिंसा और बर्बरता चरम पर है।

सीरिया के सुरक्षाबलों ने, कल के सरकार विरोधी प्रदर्शनों के दौरान मारे गए नौ लोगों में से एक को दफन करने की तैयारी कर रहे लोगों को आज तड़के गिरफ्‌तार कर लिया। राजधानी दमिश्क से सौ किलोमीटर दूर कबाइली शहर दारा में ये गिरफ्‌तारियां हुईं। दमिश्क में पिछले दो सप्ताह से प्रदर्शन हो रहे हैं।
यमन के दक्षिणी प्रान्त अदन में सरकार विरोधी हजारों प्रदर्शनकारियों ने टैंकों के साथ चल रहे पुलिस दस्तों पर पथराव किया। सत्ता पर राष्ट्रपति अली अब्दुल्ला सालेह के सत्ता छोड़ने की मांग कर रहे प्रदर्शनकारियों ने आज आम हड़ताल रखी। उधर, ओमान की राजधानी मस्कट में आज कई दर्जन प्रदर्शनकारियों ने धरना दिया। वे सुरक्षाबलों के साथ हुई झड़पों के बाद कथित सरकारी ज्यादतियों की जांच की मांग कर रहे थे।

अफगानिस्तान में दक्षिणी प्रान्त कंधार में कुरान जलाने की घटना से भड़की हिंसा में कम से कम नौ लोग मारे गए और 70 से ज्यादा घायल हो गए। कल मजारे शरीफ में हिंसा में संयुक्त राष्ट्र के छह कार्यकर्ताओं सहित पांच अफगानी प्रदर्शनकर्ता मारे गए थे। कंधार प्रान्त के गवर्नर के प्रवक्ता ने बताया कि प्रदर्शनकारियों को तितर-बितर करने के लिए पुलिस को हवा में गोलियां चलानी पड़ी। सोलह लोगों को गिरफ्‌तार किया गया है।
इस बीच, राजधानी काबुल में आज सवेरे चार आत्मघाती हमलावर मारे गये। महिलाओं वाले कपड़े पहने इन लोगों ने एक अमरीकी सैनिक अड्डे पर हमला कर दिया था। नैटो के एक प्रवक्ता ने बताया कि इस हमले में तीन सैनिक घायल हो गये।

Cricket fever gripped the nation for the second time this week today as fans glued to TV sets as India and Sri Lanka were battleing for the World cup in Mumbai. When reports last came in from  the Wankhede Stadium, India were 130 for 3 in 26.4  overs, chasing a competitive victory target of 274 runs against Sri Lanka. India began the run-chase disastrously losing both their openers with only 31 runs on the board in 6.1 overs.   Virender Sehwag returned to the pavilion in the very first over.  He fell leg before wicket to Malinga without opening his account.   Tendulkar was out for 18. The third-wicket partneship between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli then steadied the innings with a 83-run partnership.  At that stage, Kohli departed at his individual score of 31. Earlier, electing to bat, Sri Lanka made  274 for six in the stipulated 50 overs. Former Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene hit an unbeaten 103 off only 88 balls. AIR Correspondents from across the country say , it was repeat of the  scene of near empty roads after the Semi final between India and Pakistan in Mohali. In Kolkata, Firecrackers, Tri-colour balloons, India jerseys and flags were all sold out. In all localities of the city, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men adored the walls with flower garlands with the replica of World Cup.  The scene was no different in Delhi, Chennai,Bangalore and other metros and towns and rural areas as well. President Pratibha Patil and her Sri Lankan counter-part Mahinda Rajapaksha are  among the  high-profile personalities who watched the India-Sri Lanka World Cup final match at a fully packed Wankhede stadium. Union Minister Kapil Sibal, business tycoon Mukesh Ambani and a number of Bollywood film personalities including  Actor Aamir Khan and southern superstar Rajnikant  were also present to cheer up Dhoni's men in blue.

The CBI has filed its first chargesheet in the 2G spectrum scam case against nine people including former telecom Minister A Raja besides three private companies. Briefing reporters in New Delhi today, CBI spokesperson, Dharini Mishra said that they have been chargesheeted under various provisions of IPC including cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy and under the Prevention of Corruption Act.  She said that  the CBI has found substantive offences in issuing New Access Service License and subsequent issuance of 2G spectrum allocation.

The CBI has stated that the 2G spectrum scam caused a loss of over thirty thousand crore rupees to the exchequer in its chargesheet that has named 125 witnesses and mentioned 654 documents. We have a report:

CBI today indicted former Telecom Minister A Raja and eight others including former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura in its  over 80,000 page chargesheet that was filed in a Delhi court today. The investigative agency has also named Reliance Telecom, Unitech Wireless and Swan Telecom under Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act. Charges of cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy and corruption have been levelled against Raja, his Private Secretary R K Chandolia, Behura and Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwa. A supplementary charge sheet is to be filed later this month in the case that is being monitored by the Supreme Court.

CNG price in the National Capital Region has been increased by 30 paise per kilogram. Indraprastha Gas Limited hiked the price to 29 rupees, 30 paise per kg from midnight tonight in Delhi. The company said in a press statement that it will be 32 rupees 85 paise in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad. IGL Managing Director Rajesh Vedvyas said that the minor adjustment in rates was done because of increase in operating expenses due to revision of minimum wages by the government.

In Assam, campaigning for the first phase of elections in 62 Assembly segments, came to an end today. Polling for these constituencies will be held on Monday. Altogether 485 candidates, including 38 women, are in the fray. AIR correspondent report, with insurgency under control the polling is poised to be peaceful. Even though the menace of militancy has reduced,insurgency remains a major poll issue in Assam. Since 1991, elections have been overshadowed by attacks, threats, intimidation and boycott calls from various insurgent groups. This time round, the State is poised for a relatively peaceful election since all the insurgent outfits, barring some factions, have either signed ceasefire agreements or are engaged in dialogue with the government.Though the militant outfits are yet to mothball their battle fatigues, the main political formations are making the lull in insurgency a major poll plank, wooing voters with promises of bringing back an enduring peace to a State ravaged by three decades of insurgency.

Meanwhile, normal life was partially hit today following a 12-hour bandh called by the ULFA's Paresh Baruah faction.It, however, failed to affect Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh's poll campaign in the state. Campaign meetings were held in different parts of the state by various political parties with large attendance of people in spite of the Bandh call.

As campaigning is in full swing for the Assembly polls in West Bengal, thirty eight nominations have so far been submitted for the second phase of polls.  In the second phase, fifty seats will go to the polls in Murshidabad, Nadiya and Veerbhoop districts on the 23rd of this month. The last date of submission of nomination is on the 6th of April. For the first phase, the total of 401 nominations have been submitted with six districts of North Bengal going to the polls in this phase for 54 seats. The notifications for the third phase of the elections was issued today for 75 seats in Kolkata, North and South, 24 Praganas districts with polling sheduled for the 27th of this month. The last date of submission of nomination for the third phase of West Bengal Assembly Elections is on the 9th of this month. Scrutiny will take place on the 11th of April and the last date for the withdrawal of the nomination is 13th of the April.

In Tamil Nadu, amidst simmering summer heat, electioneering has warmed up with personal attacks, charges and counter charges dominating the campaign as election day nears. The top leaders including the DMK Chief M.Karunanidhi and AIADMK Supremo Jayalalitha are on a whirl wind campaign. Addressing road side meeting in Dharmapuri District, Karuanidhi said the DMK had in toto implemented all the assurances given to the people in the 2006 election manifesto. AIADMK leader Jayalalitha, who addressed meetings in Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts, blamed the state government for price rise, power cuts and deterioration of law and order. Meanwhile, state election department sources said that additional companies of paramilitary forces have been sought from the Election commission.

In Kerala, despite unusually hot summer days, second phase of campaigning for the forthcoming assembly poll has intensified.

A host of senior leaders of including central ministers of Congress are engaged in campaigning for UDF candidates in different districts of Kerala. Congress President Sonia Gandhi will be addressing election functions on Wednesday. Meanwhile, election observers have issued orders to ensure that code of conduct is observed strictly. Printing presses making banners, flex boards and notices are under intense scrutiny across Kerala.

In Foreign news: Libyan rebels claim to have captured the strategic oil town of Brega, but at least 10 persons were killed when a Western Coalition air strike hit a group of rebels on the outskirts of the town.  Although there was no immediate confirmation of the rebels' victory claim, according to eye-witness reports, seven bodies of pro-Gaddafi fighters and at least 10 burnt-out pick-up trucks were found along the road between Ajbadiya and Brega.

In Ivory Coast, heavy fighting is taking place in the main city of Abidjan for the third day as rival forces battle for power. Fighters loyal to internationally-recognised president Alassane Ouattara battled for control of the presidential palace and barracks still loyal to incumbent Laurent Gbagbo.   Gbagbo's whereabouts are unknown. But the situation inside the city is unclear, with some reports that soldiers defending the base were fighting amongst themselves. State television station RTI, appears to be back under the control of Gbagbo supporters after being briefly seized by their rivals. Residents of Abidjan say they are too afraid to leave their homes as the fighting continues. There is a lot of looting going in the city.  Shops and houses have been looted by youths who are taking advantage of the situation.

The Afghan police have arrested 30 suspects in the wake of yesterday's bloody protest in Mazar-e-Sharif city, capital of northern Balkh province that left seven United Nations workers dead.  An   Interior Ministry spokesman Zamari Bashari  today said  as many as 30 suspects have been detained by police and an investigation is underway to find the fact how the demonstration turned to violence and who was behind murdering seven foreign staff of the world body. He said  those killed in the incident include four UN security guards and three UN civilian employees while another UN civilian staff was injured.  According to Bashari, four demonstrators were also killed in the clash while a total of 23 others injured in the violent incident.

In Nigeria, Independent National Electoral Commission today announced the postponement of the general elections amid hitches caused by poor logistics.  The elections which is now slated for Monday is meant for the 109 seats in the Senate and the 360 seats for the House of Representatives.  Chairman of the Election Commission Attahiru Jega told the reporters that an unprecedented late arrival of result sheets was the reason for the postponement. The Chairman expressed his confidence that there would be no further delays to the process because all electoral material had now arrived in the country. Nigeria's electoral commission had pledged to make this year's polls free and fair, and introduced new voting procedures designed to prevent cheating and maintain order.

Syrian security forces made pre- dawn arrests today as mourners prepared to bury the first of at least nine people killed in anti-government protests yesterday. Rights activists said the arrests came in the tribal region town of Daraa,  100 kilometres  south of Damascus. The capital has been one of the main centres of more than two weeks of demonstrations. In Yeman, thousands of anti-government protesters were  hurling stones at anti-riot police backed by tanks in the southern province of Aden. Protesters are demanding the ouster of longtime leader President Ali Abdullah Saleh and they had called for a general strike today.

India Calls for Promotion of South-South Cooperation and Strengthening of Partners in Population and Development. Presiding over the Executive Committee of the Organisation  in New Delhi today  Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare,  Ghulam Nabi Azad urged the Member Countries to increase their annual contribution. He also called for  long-term fellowships and work towards institutionalization of South-South mechanism in various areas.
