• प्रधानमंत्री ने माओवादी उग्रवादियों की वजह से बढ़ी नागरिक हत्याओं पर चिंता व्यक्त की। डॉक्टर मनमोहन सिंह ने फिर कहा - आतंकवाद के खात्मे और सांप्रदायिक हिंसा पर काबू पाने में कोई ढील नहीं दी जायेगी।
• भाजपा नेतृत्व एनडीए का अपने मुख्यमंत्रियों और वरिष्ठ नेताओं से अपनी संपत्तियों का खुलासा करने का निर्देश। पार्टी ने केंद्र सरकार से काले धन को वापस लाने के प्रयास करने को कहा।

प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा है कि देश की आंतरिक सुरक्षा की स्थिति मजबूत है, लेकिन माओवादी उग्रवाद, सीमापार से आतंकवाद, धार्मिक कट्टरता और जातीय हिंसा की समस्याएं अब भी चुनौती बनी हुई है। आज नई दिल्ली में आतंरिक सुरक्षा पर मुख्यमंत्रियों के सम्मेलन का शुभारंभ करते हुए डॉ0 मनमोहन सिंह ने कहा कि इनसे निपटने के लिए केन्द्रीय और राज्य-बलों के बीच बेहतर तालमेल होना चाहिए।

माओवादी उग्रवाद से निपटने के लिए केंद्र और राज्य बलों के बीच बेहतर तालमेल की जरूरत है। मैं इस सम्मेलन में शामिल मुख्यमंत्रियों से आग्रह करता हूं कि वे केंद्रीय और राज्य पुलिस बलों के संयुक्त अभियानों को बढ़ाने पर विचार करें।
प्रधानमंत्री ने माओवादी हिंसा में नागरिकों के मारे जाने की बढ़ती घटनाओं पर चिंता व्यक्त करते हुए कहा कि छत्तीसगढ़, बिहार, पश्चिम बंगाल और झारखंड में हिंसा की घटनाएं चिन्ता की बात है। उन्होंने ओड़ीशा और महाराष्ट्र की समस्याओं को भी गंभीर बताया। प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि माओवादी हिंसा से प्रभावित इलाकों में स्थानीय विकास के लिए सरकार ने हाल में साठ चुने हुए जनजातीय और पिछड़े जिलों के लिए समन्वित कार्ययोजना को मंजूरी दी है।

आतंकवादी हमलों में आई गिरावट पर संतोष व्यक्त करते हुए डा0 मनमोहन सिंह ने स्थिति पर लगातार निगरानी रखने की आवश्यकता पर जोर दिया। जम्मू-कश्मीर में हाल के आन्दोलन में युवाओं के मारे जाने पर खेद व्यक्त करते हुए उन्होने कहा कि इस तरह के आन्दोलन से हिंसा का कुचक्र शुरू हुआ।
जम्मू कश्मीर में हाल के आंदोलन में सुरक्षा बलों द्वारा अत्यधिक संयम बरते जाने के बावजूद युवाओं का मारा जाना बेहद दुखद और दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण है। एक हजार 500 से भी अधिक सुरक्षाकर्मी भी घायल हुए हैं। सर्वदलीय प्रतिनिधि मंडल के दौरे और उसके बाद सरकार के आठ सूती कार्यक्रम की घोषणा और कई सहाकरात्मक पहलों से घाटी में स्थिति सुधरी हो।
पूर्वोत्तर राज्यों में सुरक्षा की स्थिति के बारे में प्रधानमंत्री ने फिर कहा कि सरकार उन सभी गुटों से बातचीत करने को तैयार है जो हिंसा छोड़ देंगे।

डॉ0 सिंह ने कहा कि आतंकवाद और साम्प्रदायिक हिंसा से निपटने में कोई ढील नहीं दी जा सकती।

भारतीय जनता पार्टी के नेतृत्व में एनडीए ने कहा है कि वह कालेधन के खिलाफ अपनी मुहिम के तहत अपने शासन वाले राज्यों के मुख्यमंत्रियों और वरिष्ठ नेताओं को अपनी संपत्ति की घोषणा करने को कहेगी। उसने सरकार से कहा है कि वह विदेश्ी के बैंकों में जमा देश का काला धन वापस लाने के सभी प्रयास करे। एनडीए के वरिष्ठ नेताओं ने संवाददाता सम्मेलन में विदेशों के बैंकों में जमा भारत के कालेधन और इस समस्या से निपटने के उपायो के बारे में पार्टी द्वारा गठित कार्यदल की रिपोर्ट पेश की। यह पूछे जाने पर कि क्या वे इस बात से सहमत हैं कि कर्नाटक के मुख्यमंत्री बी0 एस0 युदियुरप्पा को भी अपनी संपत्ति की घोषणा करनी चाहिए ? श्री आडवाणी ने इससे सहमति जताई और कहा कि भाजपा और एनडीए के सभी मुख्यमंत्रियों को ऐसा करना चाहिए। एनडीए ने 2-जी स्पेक्ट्रम आवंटन मामले की जांच के लिए संयुक्त संसदीय समिति की जांच की मांग फिर दोहराई। श्री आडवाणी ने कहा कि पार्टी इस महीने की आठ तारीख को लोकसभा नेता प्रणब मुखर्जी के साथ होने वाली बैठक में यह मुद्दा उठायेंगे। उन्होंने कहा कि एनडीए राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों और आदर्श हाउसंिग सोसायटी में घोटाले की जांच भी जेपीसी से कराने की मांग करेगा।

मुख्य सतर्कता आयुक्त के पद पर अपनी नियुक्ति का बचाव करते हुए श्री पी जे थामस ने आज उच्चतम न्यायालय को बताया कि पामोलीन आयात मामले में उनके खिलाफ कार्रवाई के लिए कोई मंजूरी नहीं दी गई थी। न्यायालय में दाखिल एक शपथ-पत्र में श्री थॉमस ने कहा कि केन्द्रीय सतर्कता आयोग से मंजूरी मिलने के बाद ही उनका नाम इस पद के वास्ते विचार के लिए आया था। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि केन्द्रीय सतर्कता आयुक्त पद के लिए उस समय वे सबसे वरिष्ठ अधिकारी थे।

भारतीय जनता पार्टी की वरिष्ठ नेता सुषमा स्वराज ने कहा है कि मुख्य सतर्कता आयुक्त के पद पर श्री पी. जे. थॉमस की नियुक्ति के मामले में वे उच्चतम न्यायालय में कोई हलफनामा दाखिल नहीं करेंगी। उन्होंने कहा कि गृहमंत्री के इस बयान के बाद सरकार के साथ तथ्यों पर कोई विवाद नहीं रह गया है कि चयन समिति में श्री थॉमस के खिलाफ पॉमोलिन मामले पर चर्चा हुई थी।

राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों में अनियमितताओं की जांच कर रही शुंगलू समिति ने कहा है कि वह 28 हजार करोड़ रूपये के निर्माण कार्यों की जांच कर रही है और इसमें समय लगेगा। लेकिन समिति के अध्यक्ष श्री शुंगलू ने कल प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय को प्रस्तुत अपनी अंतरिम रिपोर्ट का कोई ब्यौरा देने से इंकार कर दिया। समिति ने राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों के प्रसारण अधिकार दिये जाने के मामले में अनियमितताओं पर कल अंतरिम रिपोर्ट प्रस्तुत की थी।

इस बीच, प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह ने शुंगलू कमेटी की पहली रिपोर्ट के निष्कर्षों पर गंभीर रूख अपनाया है। मंत्रिमंडल सचिवालय को दी गयी रिपोर्ट का अध्ययन किया जा रहा है। हमारे संवाददाता ने सरकारी सूत्रों के हवाले से बताया है कि मंत्रिमंडल सचिवालय को एक हते के अंदर ये बताने के लिए कहा गया है कि इस पर क्या कार्रवाई की जा सकती है।

उच्चतम न्यायालय ने स्पष्ट किया है कि सिर्फ नियंत्रक और महालेखा परीक्षक-सीएजी की रिपोर्ट के आधार पर टू जी स्पैक्ट्रम के आबंटन रद्द नहीं किये जा सकते। न्यायालय ने कहा कि जिन दूरसंचार कंपनियों में खामियां पाई गई हैं उनके लाइसेंस नियमित करने सहित, सरकार के सभी फैसलों की जांच-पड़ताल की जायेगी। इस बारे में सरकार का कोई भी फैसला न्यायालय में विचाराधीन याचिकाओं के परिणामों से संचालित होगा। न्यायमूर्ति जी एस सिंघवी और न्यायमूर्ति ए के गांगुली की पीठ ने आज कहा कि याचिका दायर होने के बाद सरकार जो भी कदम उठाती है, वह याचिका के परिणाम से संचालित होता है।

सीबीआई, आदर्श हाउसिंग घोटाले में महाराष्ट्र के पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री अशोक चव्हाण सहित जिन-जिन लोगों के नाम आए हैं, उन सभी को दिशा-निर्देशों के कथित उल्लंघन को लेकर उनकी भूमिका के बारे में पूछताछ के लिए नोटिस देने वाली है। सीबीआई की योजना उन्हें पूछताछ के लिए अपने दतर बुलाने की है। जांच एजेंसी कल बंबई उच्च न्यायालय में एक शपथ-पत्र दाखिल कर सकती है, जिसमें वह न्यायालय को बताएगी कि इस मामले में 13 लोगों के खिलाफ एफ आई आर दर्ज हो गई है।

कांगे्रस अध्यक्ष सोनिया गांधी ने धन और बल की बढ़ती होड़ पर खेद व्यक्त किया है और कहा है कि एक निश्चित सीमा के बाद ये चाहत लालच में बदल जाती हैं।
सत्ता और धन ही सबकुछ नहीं है, उससे मिलने वाला सुख ही सबकुछ नहीं है। फिर उस सुख की भी एक सीमा है और एक सीमा तक ही उसका उपयोग हो सकता है।
वे आज नई दिल्ली में स्वतंत्रता सेनानी चौधरी रणबीर सिंह की याद में एक डाक टिकट जारी करने के समारोह में बोल रही थीं। संचार और सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी मंत्री कपिल सिब्बल ने भारतीय संविधान सभा के सदस्य स्वर्गीय रणबीर सिंह के सम्मान में एक डाक टिकट जारी किया।

महाराष्ट्र में 2008 के मालेगांव बम विस्फोट का भगोड़ा आरोपी प्रवीण मुत्तलिक को कल रात महाराष्ट्र आतंकवाद निरोधी दस्ते ने कर्नाटक में गिरफ्‌तार किया। उसे आज मुम्बई के विशेष मकोका अदालत में पेश किया गया। हमारी संवाददाता ने बताया है कि अदालत ने उसे 14 फरवरी तक पुलिस हिरासत में भेज दिया।
सितम्बर 2008 में मालेगांव में हुए बम विस्फोट के बाद प्रवीण फरार हो गया था। इस गिरफ्‌तारी के बाद मालेगांव प्रकरण में कुछ मिलाकर 12 लोगों की गिरफ्‌तारी हुई है। गौरतलब बाद यह है कि इस मामले में अन्य दो आरोपी रामजी कलंकसारा और संदीप डांगे अभी तक फरार है।

उत्तर प्रदेश में आज हिमगिरि एक्सपे्रस रेलगाड़ी में हुई दुर्घटना में नौ युवकों की मृत्यु हो गई। वे इस रेलगाड़ी की छत पर यात्रा कर रहे थे। यह दुर्घटना शाहजहांपुर जिले में रोजा स्टेशन के निकट हुई। इसमें पन्द्रह लोग गंभीररूप से जख्मी हुए हैं। पुलिस महानिरीक्षक बी पी सिंह ने हमारे संवाददाता को बताया कि ये युवक बरेली में भारत-तिब्बत सीमा पुलिस-आईटीबीपी में नौकरी के लिए अपना दस्तावेज सौंपकर लौट रहे थे।

कर्नाटक उच्च न्यायालय ने पांच निर्दलीय विधायकों द्वारा दायर उस याचिका पर आज फैसला सुरक्षित रखा जिसमें उन्होंने दल बदल विरोधी कानून के तहत उन्हें अयोग्य ठहराये जाने के विधानसभा अध्यक्ष के0 जी0 बोपइया के आदेश को चुनौती दी है। अध्यक्ष ने इन पांचों विधायकों को मुख्यमंत्री बी. एस. येदियुरप्पा के विश्वास मत का सामना करने से एक दिन पहले अयोग्य घोषित कर दिया था।

नोबल शांति पुरस्कार विजेता मोहम्मद अलबरदेई मिस्र में बढ़ते आंदोलन के एक प्रमुख लोकप्रिय नेता के रूप में उभर रहे हैं। उन्होंने राष्ट्रपति हुस्नी मुबारक से कहा है कि अगर वे अपने आप को बचाना चाहते, तो देश छोड़ दें। उन्होंने विश्वास व्यक्त किया कि सेना लोगों का साथ देगी। उन्होने ब्रिटेन के समाचार पत्र को बताया कि काहिरा में जन-आंदोलन केवल इसलिए नहीं है कि राष्ट्रपति मुबारक गद्दी छोडें+, बल्कि वे यह भी चाहते हैं कि मुबारक पर मुकदमा भी चलाया जाए।
इस बीच, राष्ट्रपति हुस्नी मुबारक ने आज सेना के दबाव को देखते हुए विपक्षी गुटों के साथ तुरंत बातचीत शुरू करने की पेशकश की। सेना ने लोगों की मांग को जायज बताते हुए कहा है कि वह प्रदर्शनकारियों पर गोली नहीं चलाएगी। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि काहिरा में भारी संख्या में सेना और हथियारबंद गाड़ियों की मौजूदगी के बीच आंदोलन जारी है।
विरोध के केन्द्र तहरीर स्क्वायर पर ठसाठस भीड़ सेना द्वारा शांतिपूर्ण प्रदर्शनकारियों के विरूद्ध हथियार न उठाने के वायदे के कारण दुगने उत्साह और आत्मविश्वास से इक्ट्ठा है। आज का प्रदर्शन राष्ट्रपति मुबारक की सरकार के लिए निर्णय की घड़ी की तरह देखा जा रहा है। इसकी शुरूआत राजनीतिक सहभागिता की कमी, मुद्रा स्फीति, बेरोजगारी, अमीर-गरीब के बीच बढ़ती खाई और भ्रष्टाचार के मुद्दों को लेकर आठ दिन पहले हुई थी। सरकार द्वारा सुधार और विपक्षियों से बातचीत के आश्वासन का कोई असर नहीं हुआ है। स्कूल, कॉलेज, व्यापारिक प्रतिष्ठान बंद हैं, इंटरनेट ठप है, फोन सेवायें बुरी तरह प्रभावित है।

इधर, भारत ने मिस्र में सरकार विरोधी प्रदर्शनों को आन्तरिक मामला बताया है और आशा व्यक्त की है कि वहां संकट की समाप्ति के लिए प्रदर्शनकारियों का मान्य समाधान निकल आयेगा । विदेश मंत्री एस एम कृष्णा ने नई दिल्ली में कहा कि सरकार स्वदेश लौटने के इच्छुक भारतीयों को वापस लाने के लिए आवश्यक प्रबंध करेगी। उन्होंने कहा कि काहिरा में भारतीय दूतावास भारतीय समुदाय के साथ लगातार संपर्क बनाये हुए है। श्री कृष्णा ने कहा कि मिस्र से महिलाओं और बच्चों को लेकर दो विमान पहले ही भारत आ चुके हैं।

अमरीका में भारतीय छात्रों के पैरों में रेडियो टैग लगाने के मुद्दे पर उन्होंने कहा है कि इस पूरे मामले को व्यापक संदर्भ में देखा जाना चाहिए। उन्होंने कहा कि अमरीका में एक लाख अस्सी हजार से अधिक भारतीय छात्र हैं और यह मामला केवल बारह या अट्ठारह छात्रों का है। श्री कृष्णा ने यह भी कहा कि भारत ने इस मुद्दे पर अमरीका से बातचीत की है।

मुंबई शेयर बाजार में आज लगातार पांचवे सत्र गिरावट का सिलसिला जारी रहा और सेंसेक्स 306 अंक लुढ़ककर 18 हजार 22 पर बंद हुआ। नेशनल स्टॉक एक्सचेंज का निटी 89 अंक गिरकर पांच हजार 417 हो गया।

The Prime Minister has cautioned that although the internal security situation in the country remains stable, left wing extremism, cross border terrorism, religious fundamentalism and ethnic violence still persists. Inaugurating the Chief Ministers' Conference on internal security in New Delhi today, Dr. Manmohan Singh emphasized the need for a greater coordination of responses and resources between the Central and state forces to combat the menace.

Expressing concern over the increased number of casualties among civilians due to left wing extremism, he said that Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand continue to be a cause for concern in view of the level of violence. He called the problems in Odisha and Maharashtra quite serious. The Prime Minister said that for local development in the Left Wing Extremism affected areas, the Government has recently approved an Integrated Action Plan for 60 selected tribal and backward districts.

Expressing satisfaction over a steep fall in the number of terror attacks, with only two incidents at Pune and Varanasi, Dr. Singh emphasized importance of being constantly vigilant. Regretting the death of young people in Jammu and Kashmir in the recent agitation, the Prime Minister opined that this form of agitation generated a vicious cycle of violence. On security situation in the North-Eastern states of the country, the Prime Minister reiterated the commitment of the government for dialogue with one and all if the outfits abjure violence. Dr. Singh reiterated that there can be no let up in efforts to combat terrorism and communal violence in the country. On securing the borders, Dr. Singh said that the work on the integrated Check Posts at Attari, Raxaul and Jogbani is progressing well. The coastal security initiative has gathered good momentum. Addressing the inaugural function, the Home Minister P. Chidambaram said, there is significant improvement in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir in recent months. He asserted that the north-east witnessed a dramatic change last year with lowest level of violence in many years.

Pledging to set an example in the fight against black money, BJP-led NDA today said, it would direct its Chief Ministers and seniormost leaders to declare their assets. It also asked the government to make all efforts to bring Indian slush funds stashed in tax havens abroad. Senior NDA leaders held a press conference to present the report of a task force appointed by BJP to look into the issue. The NDA leaders  endorsed the suggestions of the report which targets corrupt politicians as well. NDA Working chairperson L K Advani said, there should be an FIR against those keeping black money abroad. NDA also reiterated its demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the alleged 2-G spectrum allocation issue. Mr Advani said, the party will raise the issue in the meeting with the leader of the Lok Sabha, Pranab Mukherjee on the 8th of this month. Mr Advani said, the NDA will also demand JPC probe on the alleged Commonwealth Games and Adarsh Housing Society scams.

The Shunglu committee today said that the projects pertaining to the Commonwealth Games under investigation are worth 28,000 crore rupees and time was required to probe them. Mr.V K Shunglu, however,  declined to share details of the interim report on alleged irregularities in awarding broadcasting rights during Games which was submitted to the Prime Minister Office yesterday. The term of the panel has been extended till 31st of March to submit its full report. The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has taken a serious view of the findings of the first report of the Shunglu Committee on Host Broadcasting in the Commonwealth Games. The report  has been forwarded to the Cabinet secretary and is now under examination. AIR correspondent quoting official sources reports, the Cabinet Secretary has been asked to submit his report within a week for future action. B. S. Lalli has already been suspended as chief executive officer of Prasar Bharti by the Government.

The Supreme Court today made it clear that the CAG report cannot be the only basis for cancellation of allocation of the 2G Spectrum and said all government decisions, including  regularisation of the licences of erring telecom companies, would be scrutinised by it. It said that any decision taken by the centre on the 2G spectrum would be subject to the outcome of the petitions pending before it. A bench comprising Justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly said, everything government does after the filing of the petitions is subject to the outcome of the petitions.

After questioning former telecom minister A Raja, the CBI today quizzed his brother and a close associate in connection with the 22,000 crore rupees 2G spectrum scam. Official sources said, Raja's brother A Kaliya Perumal was questioned for over seven hours at the agency's headquarters in New Delhi. They said a close associate of Raja was also questioned.

Defending his appointment as Central Vigilance Commissioner, P J Thomas today told the Supreme Court that there was no sanction to prosecute him in the Palmolein import case. In an affidavit, submitted to the apex court, Thomas said that his name was considered for empanelment for the post after the Central Vigilance Commission had given a clearance for it. He also said that he was the senior-most bureaucrat to be considered for the CVC's job. Thomas, in his affidavit, said that he has all the qualifications as required under Section 3 of the CVC Act for the job. He also stated that the inquiry about the documents being placed before the three-member committee headed by Prime Minister may not be relevant in the light of the fact that all the names on the shortlist were of secretaries to the government, who, by virtue of their process of selection as secretaries are deemed to be of impeccable integrity.

Praveen Mutalik, an absconding accused in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case, has been arrested from Karnataka by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad. AIR correspondent reports that Mutalik, one of the three accused still evading arrest in the case, was picked up last night.

He was produced before a special MCOCA court in Mumbai which remanded him in police custody till February 14. After the September 2008 Malegaon blast mutalik was absconding. With this, the number of arrests in the case has gone up to 12. Howver Two other accused - Ramji Kalangsara and Sandeep Dange - are still absconding.

The Karnataka High Court today reserved its judgement on the writ petition filed by the five Independent MLAs who had challenged Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah's order disqualifying them under the Anti-Defection Law. A full bench reserved its orders after concluding the hearing from both parties. The five MLAs were disqualified by Bopaiah on October 10, a day before Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa sought the vote of confidence, which he won.

In Uttar Pradesh, at least nine youths, travelling atop a train, were killed when they were hit by an overbridge in Shahjahanpur district today. Inspector General of Police, B.P.Singh told AIR Correspondent that they were returning from Bareilly after submitting documents for jobs in ITBP. Several other ITBP aspirants travelling on roof of the Himgiri Express, were also injured. The condition of 15 of them is serious. The youths were killed when they fell from the moving train near Roja station, a short distance away from the main Shahjahanpur station. Agitated over their death, the ITBP aspirants went on a rampage and torched two coaches of an Express train. Over 1.5 lakh youths, vying for ITBP jobs, reached Bareilly this morning to submit forms for recruitment in the force. Earlier in the day, thousands of ITBP aspirants went on a rampage in Bareilly, torching a number of vehicles after they failed to submit their forms due to alleged mismanagement by the authorities.

Nobel peace laureate Mohammad ElBaradei who is emerging as a key figure in popular uprising in Egypt has asked President Hosni Mubarak to leave the country, if he wants to save his skin. He also exuded confidence that the Army will side with the people. The former UN nuclear chief inspector has told a British newspaper that the word on the streets in Cairo is no longer that Mubarak should go but, that he should be put on trial. This is ElBaradei's first interview, since the outbreak of revolt against the powerful President. He is the choice for the top post of eight major opposition groups leading the revolt in Egypt.

Epicentre for protests, the Tahrir Square in Cairo is packed with large numbers of people filled with renewed confidence and enthusiasm as Army has announced that it will not use force against peaceful demonstrators. Today’s demonstrations are seen as a pivotal point for President Mubarak’s regime against whom the protest triggered due to lack of political participation, high inflation, growing unemployment, wealth gap and corruption. The  government is trying to placate people with promises of reforms and dialogue with opposition groups but it appears to have created little excitement among protestors. Offices, Schools, Stock exchange and Business Establishments remain closed, internet is down, mobile services badly affected across the country, and its economic effects have been experienced in the area and beyond.

India has described the anti-government protests in Egypt as an internal affair and hoped that the African nation will find a solution acceptable to the protesters, to end the crisis. External Affairs Minister S M Krishna told reporters in New Delhi that the government will make necessary arrangements to bring back Indians, willing to come home. He said, the Indian Embassy in Cairo is in constant touch with the Indian community. Mr Krishna said two planeloads of women and children from Egypt have already landed in India. Making it clear that the government was not forcing anyone to come back to India, he said the Ministry has issued an advisory asking citizens to avoid travelling to Egypt.

The External Affairs Minister Mr.S M Krishna today said the issue of some Indian students tagged in the US should be understood from the larger perspective. He added that over 1.8 lakh Indians are studying there and the matter relates to just 12 or 18 students. He said in New Delhi that at the same time, India will take up with the US, the issue of Indian students being defrauded by the Tri-Valley University in California.

Continuing its relentless slide for the fifth straight session, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange plunged 306 points, or 1.7 percent, to 18,022, today. During the session, the Sensex had slipped below the psychological 18,000 mark, to its lowest level in five months. The market slipped on fears of inflation, and rising input costs and interest rates crimping corporate profits. The Nifty declined 89 points, or 1.6 percent, to 5,417. But stock markets in Japan, China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore rose between 0.1 percent and 0.4 percent.  The rupee appreciated 14 paise, to 45.77 against the dollar.  Gold declined 30 rupees, to 20,370 rupees per ten grams in Delhi. And crude oil futures declined 57 cents, to 91.62 dollars a barrel on the NYMEX, even as Brent North Sea crude crossed 100 dollars a barrel.

In Jordan, King Abdullah has dismissed his Cabinet and appointed a new Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit. The move came after thousands of protestors had demanded the resignation of fomer PM Samir Rifai and action on rising prices and unemployment. Earlier, the king accepted Mr. Rifai's resignation.
