मिस्र में उच्च सैनिक परिषद ने संसद भंग कर दी है और संविधान स्थगित कर दिया है। इस घोषणा के बाद अधिकांश प्रदर्शनकारी काहिरा के तहरीर चौक से चले गए हैं। सरकारी टेलीविजन पर कल शाम वक्तव्य में परिषद के प्रवक्ता ने ऐलान किया कि देश में नई असैनिक सरकार के गठन के लिए उसने छह महीने के भीतर लोकतांत्रिक चुनावों कराने का कार्यक्रम तय किया है। ऐलान में ये भी कहा गया कि जनमत संग्रह के आधार पर नया संविधान तैयार किया जाएगा।इस बीच मिस्र में जन जीवन धीरे-धीरे सामान्य होता जा रहा है। कल मिस्र में श्रमिकों में असंतोष रहा और पुलिस ने भी प्रदर्शन में हिस्सा लिया। स्कूल, कॉलेज २० फरवरी को खुलेंगे।
इससे पहले, मिस्र के प्रधानमंत्री अहमद शफीक ने बताया कि मौजूदा मंत्रिमंडल बना रहेगा और कामचलाऊ सरकार की पहले प्राथमिकता सुरक्षा बहाल करना होगी।
मुबारक सरकार का तख्ता पलटने के बाद मंत्रिमंडल की पहली बैठक के पश्चात संवाददाता सम्मेलन में प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि उनकी मुख्य चिंता मिस्र के लोगों की सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करना है। उन्होंने सभी आवश्यक वस्तुओं की कीमतें कम करने का भी वायदा किया।
हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि तहरीर स्क्वायर खाली कराने के लिए कल सैनिकों की प्रदर्शनकारियों से झड़पें हुईं। कई प्रदर्शनकारी वहां से जाने से पहले पक्की तसल्ली कर लेना चाहते थे कि लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था बहाल हो जाए।
देश के सैन्य शासकों ने ये निर्णय प्रदर्शनकारियों द्वारा सभी मांगों को माने जाने तक आंदोलन जारी रखने के संकेतों को बाद लिया। उनकी अन्य मांगे हैं देश से आपातकालीन कानूनों को हटाया जाना, राजनीतिक कैदियों की रिहाई और सिविलियन संक्रमणकालीन सरकार का गठन। वर्तमान संसद पिछले वर्ष व्यापक धांधली के आरोपों के बीच चुनी गई थी। जिसमें सत्ताधारी राष्ट्रीय जनतांत्रिक पार्टी को भारी बहुमत मिला था। जहां विपक्षी पार्टियों ने इस कदम का स्वागत किया है। वहीं कई लोग सेना की भूमिका को आशंका से भी देखते हैं। इस बीच मिस्र की घटना का प्रभाव अल्जिरिया और यमन में भी देखने को मिल रहा है। जहां प्रदर्शनकारी लम्बे समय से सत्तासीन शासकों को हटाने की मांग को लेकर प्रदर्शन आयोजित करने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं।

सोमालियाई समुद्री लूटेरों ने केन्या में नेरोबी के पास माल्टा के एक जहाज का अपहरण कर लिया है। इस मालवाहक जहाज एम वी सिनिन के चालक दल में २३ सदस्य हैं, जिनमें १३ ईरानी और १० भारतीय हैं। नई दिल्ली में नौसेना के प्रवक्ता ने बताया कि इस घटना की सूचना यूरोपीय संघ की नौसेना ने दी है। जहाज पर सोमाली लुटेरों ने शनिवार को हमला किया, जिससे उसका सम्पर्क कट गया। समुद्री गश्ती विमान ने इस जहाज पर मौजूद दो नावों का चित्र लिया। इस जहाज को ओमान में मसीराह के पूर्व में करीब ५६० किलोमीटर की दूरी पर ले जाया गया है। ब्यौरे की प्रतीक्षा है।एक अन्य घटना में डेनमार्क के एक युद्धपोत ने मछली पकड़ने के एक जहाज को मुक्त कराकर १६ संदिग्ध सोमाली लुटेरों को गिरफ्तार किया है। जहाज पर दो बंधक भी मौजूद हैं जो यमन के नागरिक हैं।

जानेमाने पाकिस्तानी गायक राहत फतेह अली खान के कब्जे से ६० लाख रुपये की विदेशी मुद्रा बरामद होने के बाद राजस्व गुप्तचर अधिकारियों ने उनसे नई दिल्ली में व्यापक पूछताछ की। उन्हें दल के दो सदस्यों के साथ कल इंदिरागांधी अंतर्राष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे पर बड़ी मात्रा में अघोषित विदेशी मुद्रा के साथ हिरासत में लिया गया था। ये लोग दुबई के रास्ते लाहौर जा रहे थे। उस्ताद नुसरत फतेह अली खान के भतीजे राहत हिन्दी फिल्मों के मशहूर गायक भी हैं।पाकिस्तान टेलीविजन के अनुसार गृह मंत्री रहमान मलिक ने नई दिल्ली स्थित अपने राजदूत से राहत फतेह अली खान को कानूनी सहायता उपलब्ध कराने का निर्देश दिया है।
कुछ पाकिस्तानी गायकों ने इस घटना पर चिन्ता व्यक्त करते हुए कहा है कि कभी-कभी कलाकार ऐसे कानूनी मामलों में लापरवाही बरतते हैं, जिससे वे परेशानी में पड़ जाते हैं, लेकिन उन्होंने पाकिस्तान सरकार से अनुरोध किया कि वह हस्तक्षेप करके राहत को जल्दी से जल्दी छुड़ाएं। भारत का कहना है कि कानून अपना काम करेगा।

सरकार ने आज बताया कि देश के सभी हवाई अड्डों पर शरीर को स्कैन करने की टैक्नोलोजी इस्तेमाल करने की संभावनाओं का पता लगाने के वास्ते समिति गठित कर दी गई है। नागरिक उड्डयन मंत्री वायलार रवि ने नई दिल्ली में विमानन सुरक्षा सम्मेलन के सिलसिले में आए पत्रकारों से बातचीत में बताया कि इस समिति से यह पता लगाने को कहा गया है कि इस टैक्नोलोजी के इस्तेमाल से स्वास्थ्य और गोपनीयता पर कोई असर तो नहीं पड़ेगा।माल सुरक्षा के बारे में पूछे गए सवाल के जवाब में श्री रवि ने बताया कि सुरक्षा संबंधी केबिनेट समिति के विचार के लिए व्यापक मसौदा तैयार किया जा रहा है।
इससे पहले, सम्मेलन को संबोधित करते हुए श्री रवि ने कहा कि वर्ष २०२० तक विमान यात्रियों की संख्या करीब ३० करोड़ प्रतिवर्ष हो जाएगी जिससे विमानन उद्योग को बढ़ावा मिलेगा।

उच्चतम न्यायालय ने केन्द्र से प्रसार भारती के पूर्व मुख्य कार्यकारी अधिकारी बी एस लाली के खिलाफ कथित अनियमित्तताओं के बारे में सबूत देने को कहा है। लाली को पिछले दिसम्बर में इन अनियमित्तताओं के आधार पर निलंबित किया गया था। प्रधान न्यायाधीश एस.एच. कापड़िया की अध्यक्षता वाली पीठ ने सरकार से चार सप्ताह के अंदर लाली के निलंबन से संबंधित तथ्यों की जानकारी देने को कहा है। पीठ ने लाली से भी तीन हफ्ते के अंदर अपना जवाब देने को कहा है।न्यायालय की पीठ ने बी.एस लाली को निलंबित किए जाने की राष्ट्रपति की मंजूरी के संदर्भ में यह आदेश दिया। उनके खिलाफ राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों के प्रसारण का ठेका ब्रिटेन की कम्पनी एस.आई.एस लाइव को देने के विवादास्पद फैसले सहित कई आरोप हैं।

कर्नाटक उच्च न्यायालय आज पांच निर्दलीय विधायकों को अयोग्य घोषित करने के मामले पर अपना फैसला देगा। इन विधायकों ने अपनी याचिका में उन्हें दल-बदल विरोधी कानून के तहत अयोग्य घोषित करने के विधानसभा अध्यक्ष के.जी. बोपैया के आदेश को चुनौती दी थी। न्यायालय की पूर्ण पीठ ने दोनों पक्षों की दलीलें सुनने के बाद पहली फरवरी को अपना आदेश सुरक्षित रखा था। इन विधायकों को पिछले वर्ष अक्टूबर में मुख्यमंत्री बी.एस.येदियूरप्पा द्वारा विश्वासमत प्राप्त किए जाने से एक दिन पहले अयोग्य करार दिया गया था। इन पांचों विधायकों ने भाजपा के ग्यारह बागी विधायकों के साथ येदियूरप्पा सरकार से अपना समर्थन वापिस ले लिया था। इन विधायकों ने इस आधार पर अध्यक्ष के आदेश को चुनौती दी है कि वे भाजपा के सदस्य नहीं हैं और निर्दलीय सदस्य हैं, लेकिन सत्तारूढ़ भाजपा ने कहा है कि ये विधायक भाजपा में शामिल हो गए थे और उन्होंने पार्टी की विधायक दल की बैठकों में भाग लिया, इसलिए वे पार्टी का एक हिस्सा हैं।----------

सूचना और प्रसारण मंत्री अंबिका सोनी ने कहा है कि पंजाब और कुछ राज्यों में केबल नेटवर्क सिस्टम का एकाधिकार स्वीकार्य नहीं है और सरकार जल्द ही इससे निपटने के लिए कोई रास्ता निकालेगी। चंडीगढ में पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय के सामुदायिक रेडियो स्टेशन का उद्घाटन करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि केबल नेटवर्क के एकाधिकार को रोकने के लिए वे पहले ही पंजाब के मुख्य सचिव को लिख चुकीं है।उन्होंने कहा कि आम मंनोरजन चैनलों को आत्म अनुशासन का पालन करना चाहिए। सूचना और प्रसारण मंत्री ने कहा कि सरकार ऐसा तंत्र बना रही है जिससे ये चैनल अनुशासित हो सके।

भारतीय प्रैस परिषद् के अध्यक्ष जी. एन. राय ने कहा है कि आकाशवाणी और दूरदर्शन का उद्देश्य सही और वास्तविक तथा उत्तेजना न फैलाने वाले समाचार देना है। न्यायमूर्ति जी एन राय आज कोलकाता में आकाशवाणी और दूरदर्शन के अंशकालिक संवाददाताओं की कार्यशाला को संबोधित कर रहे थे। उन्होंने कहा कि संवाददाताओं को पश्चिम बंगाल और देश के दूसरे हिस्सों में आगामी चुनावों के दौरान समाचार देते हुए अत्यधिक संयम बरतने की जरूरत है। अपने संबोधन में आकाशवाणी के समाचार महानिदेशक जी. मोहंती ने कहा कि खबरों की प्रामाणिकता और उनमें संतुलन के लिए लोग अब भी आकाशवाणी और दूरदर्शन पर भरोसा करते हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि अनेक टी वी चैनलों की मौजूदगी के बावजूद आकाशवाणी और दूरदर्शन ने अपना स्थान बनाये रखा है।----------
इस वर्ष जनवरी में मुद्रास्फीति की दर में मामूली गिरावट आई और यह ८ दशमलव दो-तीन प्रतिशत हो गयी। इससे पहले के महीने में यह ८ दशमलव चार-तीन प्रतिशत थी। गेहूँ, दालों और चीनी जैसी कुछ वस्तुओं की कीमतों में कमी होने के कारण ऐसा हुआ, लेकिन प्याज और अन्य सब्जियों के दाम ज्यादा रहे। वार्षिक आधार पर सब्जियों की कीमतों में ६५ प्रतिशत वृद्धि हुई। प्याज के दाम भी करीब दोगुने हो गए। फलों की कीमतों में १५ दशमलव शून्य-एक प्रतिशत और अंडे,मांस और मछली के दाम में भी १५ दशमलव शून्य नौ प्रतिशत वृद्धि दर्ज की गयी। खाद्य पदार्थों की कीमतों में १५ दशमलव छह-पांच प्रतिशत वृद्धि हुई। गैर-खाद्य वस्तुओं में फाइबर की कीमतों में वार्षिक आधार पर ४८ प्रतिशत वृद्धि हुई। ईंधन और बिजली के दाम ग्यारह दशमलव-चार एक प्रतिशत बढ़े। पैट्रोल की कीमत में पिछले वर्ष की इसी अवधि में २७ दशमलव तीन-सात प्रतिशत वृद्धि हुई। चीनी के दाम १५ प्रतिशत कम हुए लेकिन खाने के तेल ७ दशमलव एक-छह प्रतिशत महंगे हुए। ----------
वित्तमंत्री प्रणब मुखर्जी ने आशा व्यक्त की है कि मार्च अंत तक मुद्रास्फीति की दर घट कर ७ प्रतिशत हो जाएगी। नई दिल्ली में संवाद्दाताओं से बातचीत में श्री मुखर्जी ने कहा कि आने वाले महीनों में मुद्रास्फीति के आंकड़े वैश्विक गतिविधियों और विश्व के बाजारों में वस्तुओं की कीमतों पर निर्भर करेंगे। चीन में गेहूँ की फसल नष्ट होने संभावनाओं के प्रभाव के बारे में वित्तमंत्री ने कहा कि सरकार को इस खबर की पूरी सच्चाई के बारे में जानकारी नहीं है, लेकिन विश्व बाजार में गेहूँ के दाम पहले से ही बढ़ रहे हैं। श्री मुखर्जी ने कहा कि जनवरी में मुद्रास्फीति की दर में कमी, उम्मीद के अनुरूप है।----------
भारतीय रिज+र्व बैंक मुद्रास्फीति पर काबू पाने के लिए और मौद्रिक उपाय कर सकता है। प्रधानमंत्री की आर्थिक सलाहकार परिषद के अध्यक्ष डॉक्टर सी.रंगराजन ने कहा कि जनवरी में मुद्रास्फीति की दर में हालांकि कुछ कमी हुई है, लेकिन अब भी वह आठ प्रतिशत से ऊपर बनी हुई है।----------
महाराष्ट्र में पुणे में आज किसानों ने प्याज पर निर्यात प्रतिबंध हटाने की मांग को लेकर प्रदर्शन किया। वे प्याज की डेढ़ सौ रूपये प्रति दस किलोग्राम कीमत की गारंटी की भी मांग कर रहे हैं। राज्यभर में किसान प्याज की कीमतों में गिरावट के खिलाफ आंदोलन कर रहे हैं। वे प्याज के निर्यात पर लगी रोक को हटाने की मांग कर रहे हैं।----------
बंबई शेयर बाजार में आज ज+बर्दस्त उछाल आया और सेन्सेक्स १८ हजार को पार कर गया। शुरूआती कारोबार में ही संवेदी सूचकांक में २११ अंकों की वृद्धि हुई। शेयरों की ताजा लिवाली और एशियाई बाजारों में वृद्धि के रूख के कारण बाजार में यह उछाल आया। अब से कुछ देर पहले यह ४१२ अंक की बढ़त के साथ १८ हजार १४५ पर था।नेशनल स्टॉक एक्सचेंज का निफ्टी भी १२८ अंक बढ़कर ५ हजार ४३६ पर था।
अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय मुद्राबाजार में डॉलर के मुकाबले रूपया १३ पैसे मजबूत हुआ। एक डॉलर की कीमत ४५ रूपये ५५ पैसे बोली गयी।

मध्यप्रदेश में, कुक्षी और सोनकच्छ, छत्तीसगढ़ की संजारी गुजरात में अहमदाबाद की खाडिया तथा मणिपुर में कौनथौजाम विधानसभा सीटों के उपचुनाव के लिए वोट डाले जा रहे हैं।मध्यप्रदेश में कुक्शी और सोनकक्ष विधानसभा उपचुनाव में मतदान ंशांतिपूर्वक चल रहा है। हमारे भोपाल संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि इन दोनों इलाकों में शांतिपूर्ण मतदान के लिए सुरक्षा के व्यापक इन्तजाम किये गये हैं।
सोनकच्छ और कुक्षी विधानसभा क्षेत्रों में शुरू के पहले चार घंटों के दौरान २० प्रतिशत से अधिक मतदान होने की खबर है। इन क्षेत्रों में संवेदनशील मतदान केंद्रों की संख्या २०० से अधिक होने के चलते स्वतंत्र और निष्पक्ष चुनाव के लिए सुरक्षा के कड़े इंतजाम किए गए हैं। कुक्षी विधानसभा में कुल छह उम्मीदवार चुनाव मैदान में हैं। वहीं सोनकच्छ में १० उम्मीदवार अपना भाग्य आजमा रहे हैं। कुक्षी विधानसभा सीट राज्य विधानसभा में नेता प्रतिपक्ष जमुना देवी के निधन के बाद खाली हुई थी। वहीं सज्जन सिंह वर्मा ने लोकसभा के लिए चुने जाने के बाद सोनकच्छ सीट से इस्तीफा दे दिया था। ये दोनों सीटे पूर्व में कांगे्रस के पास थी।
छत्तीसगढ में सन्जरी बालोड विधानसभा उपचुनाव में शांतिपूर्ण मतदान हो रहा है। दोपहर तक २० प्रतिशत से अधिक मतदान हो चुका था। इस सीट पर १५ उम्मीदवार अपनी किस्मत आजमा रहे हैं।
गुजरात में, अहमदाबाद में खाडिया विधानसभा निर्वाचन क्षेत्र में आज उपचुनाव हो रहा है। भाजपा, कांगे्रस और तीन निर्दलीय उम्मीदवारों सहित कुल पांच उम्मीदवार चुनाव मैदान में है। वोटों की गिनती इस महीने की १७ तारीख को होगी।
मणिपुर में, कौनथौजाम विधानसभा उपचुनाव के लिए दोपहर तक ५० प्रतिशत से ज्यादा मतदान हो चुका था। अब तक किसी अप्रिय घटना की खबर नही है। मतदान केन्द्रों का दौरा करने वाले हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि इन केन्द्रों पर महिलाओं और पुरूषों की लंबी कतारें लगी हुईं है।

चुनाव में धन और बल का इस्तेमाल रोकने के लिए सरकार चुनाव सुधारों में व्यापक संशोधन करेगी। केन्द्रीय विधिमंत्री एम वीरप्पा मोइली ने बंगलूर में कहा कि इस मुद्दे पर राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर विचार विमर्श के बाद अगले तीन-चार महीनों में यह संशोधन कर लिये जाएंगे। उन्होंने बताया कि चुनाव खर्च की मौजूदा सीमा बढ़ाने के बारे में राष्ट्रीय संविधान क्रियान्वयन समीक्षा आयोग-२००१ की सिफारिशों को एक सप्ताह के अंदर मंजूरी दे दी जाएगी। सिफारिशों के अनुसार लोकसभा सीट के लिए चुनाव खर्च २५ लाख से बढ़ाकर ४० लाख रूपये और विधानसभा चुनाव के लिए १० लाख से १६ लाख रूपये करने का प्रस्ताव है।मुख्य निर्वाचन आयुक्त एस वाई कुरैशी ने सुझाव दिया कि चुनाव के छह महीने से पहले उम्मीदवार के खिलाफ आपराधिक मामला दायर होने पर उसे अयोग्य ठहरा दिया जाना चाहिए। आयोग ने प्रस्ताव दिया है कि किसी भी जांच आयोग द्वारा दोषी ठहराये गए उम्मीदवार को भी चुनाव लड़ने से अयोग्य घोषित किया जाना चाहिए।

पश्चिम बंगाल में गोरखा जन मुक्ति मोर्चा ने अपने अनिश्चितकालीन बंद में कल सुबह से २४ घंटे की ढील देने की घोषणा की है। आज दोपहर बाद जलपाईगुडी में एक निजी चैनल के साथ बातचीत मे मोर्चा के अध्यक्ष बिमल गुरूंग ने बताया कि ढील के लिए तय समय सीमा के बाद बंद फिर शुरू हो जाएगा। उन्होंने बताया कि जब तक उन्हें दुआर्स क्व्व्।त्ै क्षेत्र में शांतिपूर्ण पथयात्रा करने की अनुमति नहीं मिल जाती वे कुमानी में ठहरे रहेंगे। ----------
असम में विश्व वन्य जीव कोष डब्ल्यू डब्ल्यू एफ के अपहृत कर्मचारियों की सुरक्षित रिहाई की मांग पर जोर देने के लिए अनेक स्वयंसेवी संगठनों ने कल रात कोकराझार में मोमबत्ती लेकर जुलूस निकाला। संदिग्ध सशस्त्र उगवादियों ने छह फरवरी को कोकराझार जिले के उल्तापानी इलाके से डब्ल्यू डब्लयू एफ के सर्वेक्षण दल की तीन महिलाओं सहित छह सदस्यों का अपहरण कर लिया था। इन तीन महिलाओं को अपहरणकर्ताओं ने पिछले सप्ताह भारत-भूटान सीमा के पास बंगटोल में छोड़ दिया था लेकिन तीन पुरूष कर्मचारियों का पता नहीं चल पाया है। राज्य के मुख्यमंत्री तरूण गोगोई ने खुफिया सूत्रों का हवाला देते हुए बताया है कि नेशनल डेमोक्रेटिक फ्रंट ऑफ बोडोलैंड एनडीएफबी ने इनका अपहरण किया है। मुख्यमंत्री ने सुरक्षाबलों को बंधकों की सुरक्षित रिहाई सुनिश्चित करने के निर्देश दिये है और उनसे एनडीएफबी के ठिकानों का पता लगाने के लिए अभियान तेज करने को कहा है।----------

नई दिल्ली में राष्ट्रपति भवन का मुगल गार्डन कल से आम लोगों के लिए खोल दिया जाएगा। राष्ट्रपति ने आज इसे लोगों के लिए खोलने की विधिवत घोषणा की। सोमवार को छोड़कर सप्ताह के बाकी दिन लोग सुबह दस बजे से शाम पांच बजे तक इसे देख सकेंगे। यह १६ मार्च तक खुला रहेगा। इस साल की थीम बासन्ती है। वर्टिकल गार्डन और बोन्साई गार्डन इस बार दो नये आकर्षण हैं। मुगल गार्डन के विशेष अधिकारी निगम प्रकाश ने बताया है कि वर्टिकल गार्डन फूलों की दीवार विकसित करने का नया विचार है और यह वैसे घरों के लिए खासकर उपयुक्त है जहां जगह की कमी है। बोन्साई गार्डन में फूलों की दो सौ से ज्यादा प्रजातियां हैं। इसके अलावा गुलाब, ट्यूलिप, डालिया, पैंसिस और लिलि की सवा सौ से ज्यादा प्रजातियां हैं। मुगल गार्डन को देखने के लिए महीनेभर के इस समय को राष्ट्रपति भवन उद्यानोत्सव नाम दिया गया है।----------

In Egypt, most of the demonstrators have left Cairo's Tahrir Square after higher military council dissolved parliament and suspended the constitution. In a statement on state TV, the spokesperson of the council announced last evening that it has set an approximate six-month timetable for democratic elections that would bring a new civilian government to power. It also announced that a new constitution would be drawn up subject to a referendum.
Life in the country is returning to normal. A bank holiday has been declared today after workers disrupted operations at the country's main state banks. Egypt also faced labour unrest, including a demonstration by police yesterday. Schools, colleges will open on the 20th of this month.
Earlier, Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmad Shafiq said that the present cabinet will stay and caretaker government's priority now is restoring security. Addressing a press conference after the first Cabinet meeting since Mubarak was forced to step down, the Prime minister said that his main concern now is to bring security back to the Egyptian citizen. He also promised to lower the prices of essential goods in the country.
Military rulers took the decision after demonstrators expressed their intention to continue with the symbolic protests until all their demands were met. Apart from dissolution of Parliament and new constitution their other demands are ending emergency law, release of all political prisoners and the formation of a civil transitional council. Current Parliament was elected last year, which is widely seen as illegitimate as elections were marred by widespread allegations of fraud and gave Mubarak's National Democratic Party an absolute majority. While opposition leaders welcomed the moves, some have raised worries about the future role of Army that has been a pillar of status quo in Egypt, playing a crucial behind-the-scenes part in preserving Mubarak’s rule. Meanwhile ripple effects of Egypt are being seen in Yemen and Algeria so far, where demonstrations were held calling for regime change.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has said Israel's ties with Egypt are safe and sound and post-Mubarak regime is unlikely to have any impact on the relationship between the two neighbours. Speaking to a private channel, Barak said Egypt's uprising shares nothing with the 1979 Iranian revolution.
Barak, however, cautioned against holding any election in Egypt at a short notice arguing that this would benefit the Muslim Brotherhood.

The United States has called for restrain in Algeria where anti-government demonstrations have been reported. State Department spokesman P J Crowley said the US reaffirms its support for the universal rights of the Algerian people, including assembly and expression. Crowley said that these rights must be respected. He added that the US will continue to follow the situation closely in the days ahead.
Reports say, about 2,000 activists rallied in the Algerian Capital on Saturday demanding the removal of the country's President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has been in power since 1999.

Noted Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was extensively questioned by revenue intelligence officials in New Delhi after money worth 60 lakh rupees were recovered from his possession. The singer was detained at the Indira Gandhi International Airport yesterday after he along with his two troupe members were caught allegedly carrying the huge amount of undeclared foreign currency.
The troupe was on in its way to Lahore via Dubai by an Emirates flight. A nephew of Pakistani singing legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat is also a top Bollywood playback singer.
According to Pakistan Television, Interior minister Rehman Malik has directed its envoy in New Delhi to extend legal support to the singer.
Some Pakistani singers while expressing concern on the incident have said sometimes artists show carelessness in such legal matters which land them in trouble. They, however, urged Islamabad to intervene and get the noted singer freed at earliest. New Delhi maintains that law will take its own course.

The government today said that a committee has been set up to explore the possibility of installing body scanner technologies at airports. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an aviation safety conference in New Delhi today, civil aviation minister Vayalar Ravi said the committee has been asked to look into the possibility of its likely impact on health and privacy.
In reply to a question on cargo security, Mr. Ravi said a comprehensive draft is being prepared for consideration of the cabinet committee on security.
Earlier, addressing the conference, Mr. Ravi said by 2020, 300 million passengers will be travelling by air yearly. He said, this will give fillip to the aviation industry.
AIR correspondent reports, strict security measures are already in place at all Indian airports. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has also issued fresh directions to all operators to urgently install CCTVs and take other measures to secure the entire airport area, right from the entry point.

Somali pirates have hijacked a Maltese ship with 23 crew, including 10 Indians near Nairobi in Kenya. A Navy spokesperson said in New Delhi, the incident has been reported by the European Union Naval Force .The bulk carrier MV Sinin had 13 Iranians and 10 Indians on board when it came under attack of the Somali pirates on Saturday. The ship subsequently lost communications and a maritime patrol aircraft photographed two skiffs onboard the vessel. The MV Sinin was taken about 560 kilometers east of Masirah in Oman. Details are awaited.
In a separate incident, a Danish warship freed a hijacked fishing vessel and arrested 16 suspected Somali pirates.

In Gujarat, polling is underway for the Khadia Assembly constituency in Ahmedabad city today. Total five candidates are in fray- one each from BJP and Congress and three independents. In Madhya Pradesh, voting for Kukshi and Sonkutch assembly seats by-elections is going on peacefully. AIR correspondent reports that the voters could exercise their franchise till 5 PM.
More than 20 percent voting has been reported in the early four hours in Kukshi and Sonkutch assembly segments. Elaborate security arrangements have been made for free and fair poll as over 200 polling booths are sensitive in both the segments. In Kukshi assembly segment six candidates are in fray, but the main fight is being considered between Nisha Singhar of Congress and BJP’s Mukam Singh Kirade. In Sonkutch ten candidates are trying their luck. Here main fight is between Arjun Verma of Congress and BJP’s Rajendra Verma. Kukshi seat was fell vacant after death of the leader of the opposition in the state assembly Jamuna Devi while Sajjan Singh Verma had tendered his resignation from Sonkutch seat after being elected for Lok Sabha. Both the seats were held by Congress earlier.

The Karnataka High Court will today pronounce its order on the five independent MLAs disqualification case. In their writ petition, the five Independent MLAs had challenged Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah's order that disqualified them under the Anti-Defection Law. A full bench, comprising Justices A S Bopanna, Mohan Shantanagoudar and S Abdul Nazeer, had on February 1 reserved its orders after concluding hearing from both the parties.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni has said that the monopolization of cable network system in states was not acceptable and soon the government would bring about some way of tackling this issue. Speaking at the inauguration of Community Radio station of the Punjab University in Chandigarh , she said, she had already written to Chief Secretary of Punjab to check the monopolization of cable network in the state.
The Minister said that there was need for self regulation on general entertainment channels and the government was already close to formulating a framework under which this could be made possible. She pointed out, that this framework would be self regulatory and independent.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation, DRDO has successfully developed a new molecule to work as multi-insect repellent wipes. The breakthrough technology is known as Diethyl Phenyl Acetamide (DEPA). The repellent wipes can be used for personal protection against mosquitoes and other blood sucking insects especially responsible for diseases like Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunia, Yellow fever, Black Fever, Elephantiasis and Japanese Encephalitis. Launching the product in New Delhi today, the Chief Controller of Research and Development, DRDO Dr. Prahlada said that the unique product is being made available for the use of common people after tested results on animals and human beings. Talking to All India RADIO, Dr. Prahlada said that the technology has been transferred to a private company after due examination by the government.

The Supreme Court today sought from the Centre evidence on alleged irregularities committed by former Prasar Bharati CEO, Mr. B S Lalli in running the public broadcaster on the basis of which he was suspended last December. A bench headed by Chief Justice S H Kapadia asked the government to file a statement of facts relating to Mr. Lalli's suspension within four weeks. The bench also asked the former public broadcaster chief to respond to it within next three weeks.
The bench passed the order on a Presidential reference to sack Lalli, a 1971-batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre. Lalli urged the court to expeditiously hear the reference in view of his retirement in December this year.
President Pratibha Patil had ordered Lalli's suspension in December last year. The allegations against him included the controversial decision to give a contract for broadcast of the Commonwealth Games to a UK-based firm SIS Live.

Delivering his address at an Orientation workshop for Part Time Correspondents, the Chairman of the Press Council of India, Justice G N Ray said in Kolkata today that AIR and Doordarshan correspondents should show a lot of restraint while disseminating news during the forthcoming elections in West Bengal and other parts of the country.
In his address, Mr.G.Mohanty, Director General (News), All India Radio, said that people still rely on AIR and Doordarshan news for authenticity and balance. He said, despite the presence of many TV channels, AIR and Doordarshan has been able to hold itself against all competition.

In Assam, several voluntary organizations organized a candle-light procession in the main thoroughfares of Kokrajhar town last night demanding safe release of the abducted WWF India workers. Six members of a WWF survey team, including three women were kidnapped by suspected armed militants from Ultapani forest area in Kokrajhar district on the 6th of this month. The abductors had released the three women members at Bengtol near Indo-Bhutan border last week. Three male volunteers of the WWF study team still remained untraced.
State Chief Minister Mr. Tarun Gogoi, quoting intelligence sources, revealed that the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) anti-talk group was behind the kidnapping of the WWF volunteers. He has instructed the security forces to intensify operations in the NDFB hideouts to ensure safe release of the WWF volunteers from captivity.

The Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi is arriving on a day-long visit to Mizoram this afternoon. He is scheduled to go to Mizoram University to inaugurate a women's hostel. Inflation declined marginally to 8.23 per cent in January from 8.43 per cent in the previous month, as prices of certain commodities like wheat, pulses and sugar eased, although essential items like onion and other vegetables continue to remain dearer.
However, vegetable and fruits continued to remain expensive. On an annual basis, vegetable prices rose by 65 per cent, and onion prices nearly doubled. Also, fruits became costly by 15.01 per cent and egg, meat and fish by 15.09 per cent. Overall, primary articles became costly by 17.28 per cent with food articles rising 15.65 per cent. In the non-food articles category, fibre prices rose by 48 per cent on an annual basis. However, among manufactured items, sugar prices fell by 15 per cent, while edible oils turned costlier by 7.16 per cent.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today expressed hope that the overall inflation will come down to 7 per cent by March end. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Mukherjee however, the inflation numbers in the coming months would depend on global developments and the way the commodity prices move in the global markets. in China, the finance minister said the government was not aware of the substance of the reports although the wheat prices are already firming up in the global market. Mr. Mukherjee attributed the decline in January inflation to monthly variations and said the fall was on expected lines.

The Reserve Bank may take further monetary tightening measures to tame inflation which stood at 8.23 per cent in January. The Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council chairman Dr C Rangarajan today said inflation , though down marginally from December, continued to be above 8 per cent, a level where it has stood at since January 2010.

In Maharashtra , farmers agitated today in Pune for lifting the ban on exports of onion. They have also demanded the guarantee price of 150 rupees per ten kilogram of onions. The agitated farmers also closed down all the gates of Pune Market Yard this morning. The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange gained 212 points, or 1.2 per cent, to 17,940 in opening trade, today, on bargain hunting by investors, amid a firm trend on the other Asian Bourses. The Sensex later gained further ground, to stand a solid 404 points, or 2.3 percent in the positive zone, and regain the 18,000 level after one month, at 18,132, a short while ago. The Indian rupee appreciated by 13 paise to 45.55 rupees against the US dollar in early trade today. It had closed at 45.68 rupees in the previous session on Friday.

In the 34th National Games going on at Ranchi in Jharkhand, Karnataka's P Rekha Devi defeated Shristi Singh of Uttar Pradesh to win gold in the under-62 kg women's Taekwondo event. Singh had to settle for a silver medal while Monika Raikwar of MP and O Wangoleima Chanu of Kerala won the bronze medals.
In the men's under-87 kg Taekwondo final, SSCB's Ibrahim Khan thrashed Manipal Singh of MP to clinch the first gold medal for his team.
