 ओड़ीशा विधानसभा में सभी सदस्यों ने माओवादियों द्वारा मलकानगिरि के जिला कलेक्टर आर.वी कृष्णा और जूनियर इंजीनियर पवित्र मोहन मांझी के अपहरण पर गहरी चिंता व्यक्त की है। सदन ने एक प्रस्ताव पारित करते हुए माओवादियों से अपील की है कि वे जल्दी से जल्दी दोनों अधिकारियों को छोड़ दें। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि ओड़ीशा के मुख्यमंत्री नवीन पटनायक ने माओवादियों से फिर आग्रह किया है कि वे श्री कृष्णा और श्री मांझी को कोई नुकसान न पहुंचाएं।
 
बंधक बनाए गए उड़ीसा के मल्लकानगिरी जिला मजिस्ट्रेट और कलेक्टर आर.वी. कृष्णा और जूनियर इंजीनियर पवित्र मोहन मांझी को माओवादियों से रिहा करने के लिए अभी भी -- बनी हुई हैं। माओवादियों द्वारा दी गई २४ घंटे से ज्यादा महोल्लत आज शाम खत्म हो रहा है, इस बीच उड़ीसा माओवादियों से कृष्णा और माझी को छुडाने के लिए माओवादियों की तरफ से प्रोफेसर आर.एस. राव और प्रोफेसर सर्वगोपाल के साथ बातचीत शुरू करने के लिए भुवनेश्वर में इंतजार कर रही है। माओवादी सरकार को अधिक महोल्लत देंगे या नहीं इसके बारे में अभी तक कोई सूचना नहीं है।
 माओवादियों की सात सूत्री मांगों में नक्सलवाद विरोधी संयुक्त कार्रवाई रोकने के अलावा सीमा सुरक्षा बल को हटाने, जेल में बंद सात सौ जनजातीय नक्सलवादियों को रिहा करने और आन्ध्र प्रदेश में कुल्लावरम बहुउद्देशीय बांघ परियोजना को रद्द करने की मांगें शामिल हैं।

 सरकार, माओवाद ग्रस्त इलाकों में बेहतर सम्पर्क और विकास के लिए सड़क निर्माण परियोजनाओ में तेजी लाएगी।  चालू वित्तीय वर्ष में इन इलाकों में चार हजार दो सौ किलोमीटर से लम्बी सड़कें बनाने की परियोजनाएं शुरु की जाएंगी। सड़क परिवहन और राजमार्ग मंत्री डॉक्टर सी पी जोशी ने आज नई दिल्ली में अपने मंत्रालय की सलाहकार समिति को यह जानकारी दी। उन्होंने कहा कि इन परियोजनाओं से जनजातीय बहुल सीमावर्ती जिलों में उग्रवादियों की गतिविधियों को रोकने के लिए एक बेहतर संचार नेटवर्क तैयार होगा और साथ ही साथ इससे जनजातीय लोगों की सामाजिक स्थिति भी सुधरेगी। डॉ० जोशी ने कहा कि सरकार अब तक इन इलाकों में तीन हजार आठ सौ करोड़ रुपये से भी ज्यादा की सड़क परियोजनाओं की मंजूरी दे चुकी है। श्री जोशी ने कहा कि सरकार इन इलाकों में चरणबद्ध तरीके से सड़कों के विकास के लिए वचनबद्ध है।

  प्रधानमंत्री  मनमोहन सिंह ने आज असम के कामरूप जिले में रामपुर गांव में केंद्र के बहुक्षेत्रीय विकास कार्यक्रम के तहत चलाई जा रही परियोजनाओं का जायजा लिया। प्रधानमंत्री जुहाली गांव पंचायत द्वारा बनाए गए आठ मकानों में गए और वहां के लोगों से बातचीत की। इन मकानों के निर्माण के लिए केंद्रीय अल्पसंख्यक मामलों के मंत्रालय ने धन राशि उपलब्ध कराई है। मुख्यमंत्री तरूण गोगई और राज्य के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी भी डॉक्टर मनमोहन सिंह के साथ गए। असम से राज्य सभा के सदस्य डॉ० मनमोहन सिंह राज्य के दो दिन के दौरे पर कल वहां पहुंचे थे। प्रधानमंत्री नई दिल्ली लौटने से पहले शिबसागर जिले में राष्ट्रीय डिजाइन संस्थान और जोरहाट में राजीव गांधी पेट्रोलियम प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान की आधारशिला भी रखेंगे।

 आंध्र प्रदेश में तेलंगाना संयुक्त कार्य समिति-जे.ए.सी. का असहयोग आंदोलन जोर पकड़ रहा है। आंदोलन के तहत जे.ए.सी आज इलाके में कई जगह रास्ता रोक रही है और विरोध प्रदर्शन कर रही है। हमारी संवाददाता ने बताया है कि सरकार से अलग तेलंगाना राज्य के लिए संसद में विधेयक लाने की मांग करते हुए जे.ए.सी ने इलाके में दो दिन से असहयोग आंदोलन चला रखा है।
 
विभिन्न पार्टियों के तेलंगाना प्रांत के नेताओं के साथ-साथ कर्मचारिया, श्रामिक और अध्यापक दो दिन से हो रहा नॉन कॉपरेशन आंदोलन  में भाग ले रहें हैं। प्रांत के कुछ हिस्सों में मंडल स्तर पर सरकारी कार्यालयों में काम लगभग स्थगित हो गए है, जबकि राज्य की राजधानी हैदराबाद में भी कुछ हद तक  के लिए उसका प्रभाव दिखाई दे रहें हैं। आंदोलनकारियों ने पब्लिक ट्रांसपोर्ट बसों में बिना टिकट यात्राएं कर रहे हैं और बिल जमाने और रिव्यू कलेक्शन में भी असर दिखाई दे रहे हैं। इस बीच हैदराबाद में उसमन्य विश्वविद्यालय के समीप कुछ अज्ञात व्यक्तियों ने कल रात चार बसों को जलाया।

 भारत और पाकिस्तान आगामी विदेश मंत्री स्तर की वार्ता में सर क्र्रीक के मुद्दे पर विचार करेंगे। नई दिल्ली में पत्रकारों से बातचीत में भारत के  मुख्य जल सर्वेक्षक वाइस एडमिरल बी.आर. राव ने कहा कि सर क्र्रीक मुद्दे पर जुलाई में बातचीत होगी। श्री राव ने इसे एक आसान मुद्दा बताते हुए कहा कि बातचीत की शुरूआत भारत और पाकिस्तान के महासर्वेक्षक स्तर पर होगी। भारत अब तक अपने सभी पड़ोसी देशों जैसे-श्रीलंका, म्यांमा, थाइलैंड, इंडोनेशिया और मालद्वीव के साथ अपनी समुद्री सीमा का निर्धारण कर चुका है। लेकिन पाकिस्तान के साथ सर क्रीक और बग्लादेश के साथ समुद्री सीमा का मुद्दा कई साल से लम्बित है।

 दुनिया के सबसे कम विकसित देशों- एल डी सी ने अंतरराष्ट्रीय समुदाय से कहा है कि वे उनकी सामाजिक-आर्थिक प्रगति के लिए व्यापक दृष्टिकोण अपनाए। नई दिल्ली में इन देशों के दो दिन के सम्मेलन के समापन पर जारी संयुक्त घोषणा पत्र में कहा गया है कि विश्व में शांति, सुरक्षा और समृद्धि सुनिश्चित करने के लिए एल डी सी के सामने आने वाली चुनौतियों को कारगर ढंग से निपटाना होगा। घोषणापत्र के अनुसार इस दिशा में अब तक के अंतर्राष्ट्रीय प्रयास बेनतीजा रहे हैं और ऐसे देशों की संख्या जो १९७१ में २५ थी, २०११ में ४८ हो गई है। इन देशों का कहना है कि मई में इस्ताम्बूल में एक कारगर कार्य योजना तैयार करनी होगी ताकि वर्ष २०२० तक इनकी संख्या कम से कम ५० प्रतिशत कम हो सके।
 विकासशील देशों के बीच आपसी सहयोग, व्यापार, तथा निवेश बढ़ने पर संतोष व्यक्त करते हुए एल डी सी ने इसे और बढ़ाने की प्रतिबद्धता व्यक्त की।
 विश्व में खाद्य सुरक्षा की नाजुक स्थिति पर गहरी चिंता व्यक्त करते हुए घोषणा पत्र में कहा गया है कि खाद्य मूल्यों के उतार-चढाव और मुद्रास्फीति से एल डी सी पर सबसे बुरा असर पड़ता है। घोषणापत्र में सबसे कम विकसित देशों को खाद्य उत्पादन में आत्मनिर्भर बनाने के लिए हरित क्रांति लाने की भी बात कही गई है।
 हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है ऐसे देशों में गरीबी कम करने और सहस्राब्दी के विकास लक्ष्यों को हासिल करने के लिए आर्थिक प्रगति को बढ़ावा देना  बहुत जरूरी है।
 
नई दिल्ली का मानना है कि अति आवश्यक देशों का आपसी तालमेल ही इन देशों का आपसी तालमेल ही इन देशों में स्थाई विकास ला सकता है। जहां तक विकसित और विकसित हो रहे देशों के आपसी तालमेल का प्रश्न है ऐसा देखा गया है कि विकसित देशों ने अभी तक न तो कोई तकनीक हस्तांतरित की है और न ही कोई ऐसा साझा कार्यक्रम बनाया है जिससे अति अविकसित देशों का कल्याण किया जा सके। अति अविकसित देशों की संख्या में लगातार हो रही वृद्धि को भारत चिंता का विषय मानता है। इन देशों के त्वरित विकास के लिए भारत ने जहां ५० लाख डालर का एक कोष बनाया है, वहीं पांच करोड़ डालर का ऋण भी मौहेया करवाया है। इसके अलावा हर अति अविकसित देश के लिए तकनीकी क्षेत्र में पांच छात्रवृतियां भी निर्धारित की है। पिछले कुछ दशकों में इन देशों में भारत द्वारा भारी निवेश किया गया है जो अब ३५ अरब डालर तक पहुंच चुका है।
 सम्मेलन में सबसे कम विकसित देशों के अलावा फिनलैंड, ऑस्ट्रेलिया, स्लोवानिया, चीन, हंगरी, क्रोएशिया, जॉर्जिया, यूरोपीय संघ, जर्मनी और अमरीका भी प्रेक्षकों के रूप में शामिल हुए।

 भारत ने जी-२० देशों, खासकर धनी देशों से कहा है कि वह अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय बाजार में असंतुलन और उतार-चढ़ाव के लिए जिम्मेदार नहीं है। पेरिस में जी-२० वित्त मंत्रियों की बैठक के पहले सत्र में वित्त मंत्री प्रणब मुखर्जी ने कहा कि भारत जैसी तेजी से उभर रही अर्थव्यवस्था में मौसमी कारकों और खाद्य पदार्थों की कीमतों पर उसका प्रभाव पड़ना लाजमी है। उन्होंने कहा कि मौसम की बेरूखी के कारण भारत को खाद्य पदार्थों की ऊंची और लगातार बने रहने वाली मुद्रास्फीति का सामना करना पड़ा। श्री मुखर्जी ने यह भी कहा कि अर्थव्यवस्था में विकास के कारण उपभोग के तौर-तरीके में आने वाला परिवर्तन भी इसके लिए जिम्मेदार है। उन्होंने कहा कि खाने-पीने की चीजों में बढ़त से महंगाई बढ़ी। वित्त मंत्री ने कहा कि भारत इस मामले में भाग्यशाली है कि विकास के मौजूदा चरण में कमोवेश उपभोग और निवेश के बीच संतुलन बना रहा है।

 बहरीन में मुख्य शिया विपक्षी गुट ने सुल्तान अहमद बिन ईसा अल खलीफा के बातचीत के प्रस्ताव को खारिज कर दिया है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि वफाक ब्लॉक के वरिष्ठ सदस्यों ने कहा है कि सरकार पहले इस्तीफा दे और मनामा की सड़कों से सुरक्षाबलों को वापस ले।
 
विपक्ष का कहना है कि सरकार बातचीत के पति गंभीर नहीं है और बातचीत के पहले सरकार के इस्तीफे, सुरक्षा बलों को हटाने और शांतिपूर्ण  प्रदर्शनों की इजाजत की मांग की है। बातचीत का प्रस्ताव कल की उद्घटना के बाद आया है, जिसमें म्यांमा के पल्स स्क्वायर पर फिर से इकट्ठा होने की कोशिश कर रहे प्रदर्शनकारियों के खिलाफ सुरक्षाबलों ने कार्रवाई की। विपक्ष देश में व्यापक राजनीतिक सुधारों और राजा के अधिकारों में कटौती की मांग कर रहा है। बहरीन का शासन सुन्नी शासकों के हाथ में है और माना जाता है कि अधिकत्तर प्रदर्शनकारी सिया समुदाय से है, जो देश की आबादी लगभग का ७० प्रतिशत है। अमरीका स्थिति को चिंतत होकर देख रहा है क्योंकि बहरीन में उसका पांचवां नौसेनिक बेड़ा तैनात है जिसे मध्यपूर्व में अमरीकी -- के लिए महत्वपूर्ण माना जाता है।
 इससे पहले बहरीन में सुल्तान अहमद बिन ईसा अल खलीफा ने अपने पुत्र युवराज सलमान को देश में चल रहे राजनीतिक संकट को खत्म करने के लिए राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर बातचीत शुरू करने को कहा है।
 इस बीच, जार्डन और यमन में भी कल सरकार विरोधी प्रदर्शन हुए। जार्डन में सरकार समर्थक और विरोधियों के बीच झड़पों में आठ लोग जख्मी हुए जबकि यमन में विरोध प्रदर्शन कर रहे पांच लोगों की मौत हो गई।
 अमरीका के राष्ट्रपति बराक ओबामा ने पश्चिम एशिया के नेताओं से सरकार विरोधी प्रदर्शनकारियों से निबटने में संयम बरतने का अनुरोध किया है।

 अंडमान निकोबार द्वीप समूह में पोर्ट ब्लेयर में इन दिनों भारतीय पैनोरमा फिल्मोत्सव चरम पर है। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि कल शाम उपराज्यपाल लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल भूपिंद्र सिंह ने एक भव्य समारोह में इसका उद्घाटन किया। द्वीपसमूह की समृद्ध संस्कृति की विहंगम झांकी प्रस्तुत करने वाले इस  फिल्मोत्सव में छह डेकुमेंटरी और नौ फीचर फिल्में दिखाई जा रही हैं।

 अरूणाचल प्रदेश में राज्य के स्थापना दिवस की रजत जयंती पर कल से राजधानी ईटानगर में अरुणाचल महोत्सव शुरू हो रहा है। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि इस अवसर पर ईटानगर पुस्तक मेला भी लगाया जाएगा, जो नौ दिन तक चलेगा।

 केरल में तिरूअनंतपुरम में ÷हजारों महिलाओं ने आज पोंगल की पूजा-अर्चना की। पोंगल केरल का एक महत्वपूर्ण त्योहार है जिसमें बड़ी संख्या में महिलाएं हिस्सा लेती हैं। धार्मिक सौहार्द के इस पावन अवसर पर श्रद्धालु अतुकल भगवती देवी के ऐतिहासिक मंदिर के चारों ओर इकट्ठा हुए और मिट्टी के कोरे बर्तनों में चावल-जेगरी पकाने का वार्षिक समारोह मनाया।

 इससे पहले बांग्लादेश ने टॉस जीतकर भारत को पहले बल्लेबाजी के लिए कहा। भारतीय टीम में आशीष नेहरा चोट के कारण नहीं खेल रहे हैं। आर अश्विन, पीयूष चावला और सुरेश रैना को भी टीम में शामिल नहीं किया गया है।

The CBI today conducted searches at the premises of some officials connected with organising the  Commonwealth Games.  CBI sources said that searches were conducted at the premises of R.P. Gupta, U.K. Ridhi, A.K. Saxena, Surjit Lal and Nukesh Jain.  The investigative agency had earlier arrested Deorukhkar Shekhar a close aid of former organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi.  Nearly six hundred crore rupees of contracts relating to the overlays projects are under scanner of the agency. They include supply of tents, containers, security fences, furniture, air conditioners, lighting, civil construction and athletic exercise equipment. An FIR has also been registered against the officials.  Earlier, the agency had registered three FIRs for alleged corruption in the projects and events in the run up to the mega sports event.

In Tamil Nadu, the CBI today raided the office of a private TV channel Kalaignar TV in Chennai this morning. Earlier on Wednesday, the CEO of the Kalaignar Sarath Kumar said in a statement that the transaction between Mumbai based firm Cine yug and Kalaignar TV was transparent and the CBI and it officials are free to visit the channels office and verify the records. Cine yug had advanced a loan of 200 crore to the channel but the money was returned with an interest of 31 crores after misunderstanding arose over the prizing of the channels shares.

The Government today launched a new series measuring inflation.  This suggests Consumer Price Index,CPI, based inflation at 6 per cent for January this year. Finance ministry said though inflation in terms of CPI based on the new computation stands at six per cent but actual rate of inflation would be available only after a period of one year. Releasing the new series, the government said for a period of one year, the practice of giving the figures in the present form without quoting the inflation rate would be continued till the series gets stabilized and adequate timely receipt of price data is achieved.

The Government today announced that a decision on the issue of formation of JPC  on 2G will be taken before Wednesday.  Parliamentary Affairs Minister P K Bansal told reporters that discussions with Opposition are moving forward and the government hopes the Budget Session will run smoothly. In response to questions, he said JPC is set up to look into only a particular  issue.  Giving details of the Business during the session he said 31 Bills will come up for discussion and passage including the Women Reservation Bill which provides 33 percent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and  state assemblies.  The Bill has already been passed by the Rajya Sabha.  He said the Economic Survey and Rail Budget will be presented on the 25th and the General Budget on the 28th.  The Session will begin on the 21st of this month with the address by the President Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil to the joint sitting of the two Houses.

The Supreme Court today asked Attorney General G E Vahanvati to apprise it about the status of a complaint filed in May last year against former Chief Justice of India and chairman, National Human Rights Commission K G Balakrishnan. The complaint was filed by a Delhi-based journalist  seeking a CBI probe into the assets of Balakrishnan and his family members.  A bench headed by Chief Justice S H Kapadia sought to know what is the status of the complaint forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Andhra-Odisha Border State Zonal Committee of the CPI (Maoists) today claimed abduction of Malkangiri District   Collector R. V. Krishna. In a letter written in Telugu to the media, the Secretary and spokesman of the Committee, Bhaskar, today, said the district magistrate and collector was abducted as the Odisha Government tried to prevent the meetings of Malkangiri and Koraput tribals last year. He also placed five demands before the Odisha Government in lieu of freeing Krishna. He demanded immediate halt of Operation Green Hunt, freeing of jailed Maoists in Odisha, stop movement of Special operation group, BSF, CRPF and Grey Hound personnel in their movement areas, cancellation of all mining MoUs signed by the Odisha Government with different companies and adequate compensation to the families of Maoist associates T Gangulu and Sirika who died in Koraput jail when they were under-trial. They also demanded a judicial inquiry into their under-trial death. However, nothing has been mentioned about the 48-hour deadline given by the Maoists which is coming to an end this evening. The Maoists have also cut-off the road link between Malkangiri and Jeypore today by felling trees and digging a culvert near Gobindpalli ghati on the Malkangiri-Jeypore road. Meanwhile, the Odisha Government has convened a high-level meeting at State Secretariat in  Bhubaneswar to discuss and chalk-out strategies to free abducted Malkangiri District Collector R. V. Krishna from the Maoists. They will discuss the present situation in Malkangiri and also deliberate on the demands of the Maoists to free Krishna and decide the person who can negotiate between the Government and the Maoists. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has appealed the Maoists to extend their deadline given to the Odisha Government to meet demands made for the release of abducted Malkangiri district magistrate and collector R Veenyl Krishna and Junior Engineer Pabitra Majhi. He told media persons at Bhubaneswar that his Government is trying to establish contacts with the persons to discuss and negotiate release of Krishna and Majhi. He also appealed the Maoists not to harm the district magistrate and collector and junior engineer.  The abduction issue and 'dal scam' also led to adjournment of the Odisha Assembly session till 3 PM today. The Opposition Congress and ruling BJD members tussled right on the Speaker's podium. The opposition Congress and BJP members have been demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik over both the issues.

In Kerala, former State Electricity Minister Mr. R. Balakrishna Pillai surrendered  before the Special Court dealing with the Idamalayar case in Kochi this morning. Another accused in the case P K Sajeevan, a close associate of Mr. Pillai also surrendered before the court.  Both appealed that they be sent to Poojappura Central Jail in Thiruvanathapuram as they were suffering from several ailments. The second accused in the case Ramabhadran Nair did not appear before the court.

The government has mooted a media watchdog to take care of the malicious contents. Talking to newsmen on the sidelines of a function in New Delhi today, the Information and Broadcasting Minister Mrs. Ambika Soni said that a Broadcasting Complaints Council, would be formed for self-regulation of the media. The Minister said, her ministry has worked out a  two tier  mechanism, one for the individual channels in tandem with the cable regulatory Act and another to put in place a council.

The Minister said she has written to the Prime Minister expressing her intention to rope in Cabinet colleagues, Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Law Minister Veerappa Moily, to gather feedback on the changes over the media rules. The Minister said following this exercise the proposal will be put before the Cabinet for approval.  Insisting that self regulation is the best method for managing content and taking care of the sensitivities of the audience, the Minister said that under the proposal the affected party could directly make complaints to the Council.

Government proposes to set up  a Committee to be headed by a Former Supreme Court judge to look the Air India's working. The committee will  take up the top management's performance of the national carrier and suggest the way forward. Inaugurating the centenary celebrations of Civil Aviation in the country, the Minister Vyalar Ravi said in New Delhi that workers' problems and the performance of the top management are two different issues and government will adopt a innovative approach for a  turnaround for the public carrier. The Civil Aviation minister assured to consider all issues raised by Air India unions including delay in salaries, wage rationalization and human resource integration. He however, ruled out any possibility of stake sale of the state-owned carrier. Mr Ravi also informed that the low-cost subsidiary of the public carrier will be shifted to Kochi. He also noted that government will create twenty thousand jobs in aviation sector in coming years.

New Delhi has announced  a series of concessions for the least developed countries.  Addressing the inaugural session of the Ministerial level conference of these countries in New Delhi today the External Affairs Minister Mr. S.M. Krishna said that each least developed country will get five additional scholarships under the Indian Technical and Cooperation  programme every year. He also announced setting up of five million dollar fund for United Nations least developed countries programme and another five hundred million line up credit for projects and programmes. This credit will be provided in a period of five years.

India and Malaysia today signed a landmark pact that paves the way for freer flow of trade in goods and services between the two countries. The pact will also enhance investment and economic cooperation between India and Malaysia.  The Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) was signed by Commerce Minister Anand Sharma and his Malaysian counterpart Mustapa Mohamed in Kuala Lumpur. It was signed in the presence of Prime Minister Najib Razak and several leading captains of industry from both sides. After signing of the pact Mr Najib said the CECA will usher in a new era of much deeper economic cooperation between Malaysia and India.

Both the Ministers called the agreement a vehicle that would serve to enhance trade and investment flows and encourage freer movement of goods, services and professionals between the two countries. India was Malaysia's 13th largest trading partner in 2010, with exports amounting to  6.5 billion dollars and imports at 2.4 billion dollars. The two countries envisage that with the CECA in place from Ist of July this year, bilateral trade will accelerate and touch at least  15 billion dollars by 2015.

Japan will provide an assistance of  2,557 crore rupees to India for three projects, including cleaning of  river Yamuna in the national capital. It will also provide soft loans for  Himachal Pradesh Crop Diversification Promotion Project and Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Conservation and Greening Project. The statement issued by the Ministry of Finance  said notes were exchanged in this regard between Prabodh Saxena, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs and Hideaki Domichi, Ambassador of Japan to India.  The assistance has been given as part of the 2010 Japan International Cooperation Agency loan package.

Five members from opposition Telugu Desam and Telangana Rastra Samithi were today suspended for 7 days from Andhra Pradesh Assembly. They have been suspended for disrupting Governor E S L Narasimhan’s address at the joint session of Legislature Assembly and legislature Council yesterday.

The proceedings of the Assembly have been disrupted by repeated adjournments with the Telugu Desam and Telangana Rastra Samithi members protesting against government over Fee Reimbursement and Telangana issues. The trouble started soon after the house met in the morning when the Deputy Speaker N Manohar disallowed separate adjournment motions given notice off by the TDP, CPI, CPM and BJP demanding immediate release of funds to the Fee-reimbursement scheme meant for professional students. He also disallowed another adjournment notice by TRS demanding the Government to move a resolution over statehood for Telanagana. Thronging speaker’s podium, rising slogans against the Government and displaying placards, the TDP and TRS members interrupted the proceedings of the house.

The Rajasthan government will form a new law to check incidents of illicit liquor.  In the state assembly today, the Excise Minister Rajendra Parik said that provision would be made to penalise officials also who are found guilty in case of any death due to spurious liquor.  The BJP MLAs alleged that spirit is being supplied by two companies to other states on fake permit.  Meanwhile, the Supreme Court today said it can order a CBI inquiry if Rajasthan Governement was finding it difficult to investigate the alleged role of state officers in illegal sale of arms. Voicing displeasure over the tardy progress made by the state government in its probe into the case, a bench of the apex court asked the Rajasthan government's chief secretary to file a comprehensive affidavit within three weeks about the investigation carried out by the state Police into the 14 FIRs pertaining to the case.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief,  Mr.M Karunanidhi today announced the alliance with Pattali Makkal Katchi, PMK, in the forthcoming assembly elections.  Speaking to newsmen in Chennai, Mr Karunanidhi said the PMK would be allotted 31 assembly seats and one Rajya Sabha seat. Replying  to a query, he said the Congress has no objection to the alliance.

Senior BJP leader L K Advani apologised to Congress President Sonia Gandhi for a party-appointed task force report, which had alleged that she and her late husband Rajiv Gandhi had accounts in Swiss banks. BJP had appointed the task force on unravelling the amount of black money stashed by Indians in foreign banks and ways to bring it back. The report had alleged that Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi were among Indians who held Swiss bank accounts.  This had led Sonia Gandhi to write a letter to Advani denying the allegation.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has pledged full political, economic, security and defence support to Bahrain and expressed rejection of external interference in the Kingdom’s domestic affairs. Emirates official news agency said this was announced last night after the extraordinary session of the GCC Ministerial Council meeting in Manama. The Council renewed the GCC countries’ support to any member country in confronting dangers posed to its security. 

Gulf Cooperation Council comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have supported Bahrain on handling of its current turmoil. The grouping has also rejected the external interference, in to the internal affairs of the country, which is widely believed as an indications towards Iran. Meanwhile protest organisers in Bahrain have announced more demonstrations in the country to press for their demands. Expressing deep concerns, World leaders are calling for restraints while UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has asked to bring those to justice who are responsible.

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has expressed Washington's deep concern and urged restraint. Similar criticism came from Britain and the European Union, and Human Rights Watch urging Bahraini authorities to order its security forces to stop attacks on peaceful protesters.

Meanwhile, wave of political unrest continued in the region in wake of uprisings that toppled leaders in Egypt and Tunisia. One person was killed and 6 injured in Yemen when police opened fire yesterday on a crowd of protesters in the southern port city of Aden. Another 25 people were wounded in violent clashes between pro- and anti-regime demonstrators in the capital city of Sanaa. Seven people were reported killed in Libya's second city Benghazi during a Day of Anger against Moamer Kadhafi inspired by fiery protests across the region.

In Egypt, pro-democracy leaders are organizing a victory march in Cairo today to celebrate the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule. The Higher Military Council is under pressure from activists demanding the release of political prisoners, the lifting of emergency rule and fair elections. Meanwhile three former Ministers of the Mubarak government have been arrested.

In Afghanistan, at least nine civilians were killed and 30 others injured in a suicide attack in the eastern province of Khost.  Police said the attack took place in a crowded area of Khost city. The dead included six men and three women. The explosion damaged houses and shops in the area.  Police said they became suspicious of the bomber and opened fire. The bomber then blew himself up. The death toll is likely to go up as some of the injured are in a serious condition.

Erasing all its initial gains, in very volatile trade, today, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange stood 14 points, in the negative zone, at 18,493, in afternoon deals, a short while ago. Earlier, in the morning, the Sensex had opened with a good gain of 120 points, at 18,627, on continued bargain-hunting by investors, amid easing food inflation, and firm regional markets. The Sensex has already gained nearly 1,045 points in the past five trading sessions.

The rupee appreciated 13 paise to a one-month high of 45.21 rupees a dollar today. It had closed at 45.34 rupees against the green back in the previous session. Forex dealers said a higher opening of the stock market and dollar losses against a basket of major currency rivals overseas kept the rupee sentiment firm.

Oil prices were up in Asian trade today. New York's light sweet crude gained one cent to 86.37 dollars a barrel while Brent North Sea crude rose two cents to 102.61 dollars a barrel. Analysts said persistent tensions in the Middle East and North Africa continued to push prices higher.
