Vegetarian Diet basically comprises of foods that one get from plants. Vegetarian diet consists of vegetables, fruits, grains, beans, pulses, peas, seeds and nuts. When it comes to vegetarian diet one has to be more careful about the proportional intake as in a vegetarian diet, the plant products are only the source of proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates and all other necessary nutrients.
Categorization of Vegetarian Diet
Vegetarian diet can be categorized as per the eating pattern of the masses:
- The vegan diet is a complete vegetarian diet without inclusion of any animal products in their diet
- The lacto vegetarian diet is the type of diet where plant foods are complimented with dairy products
- The lacto-ovo vegetarian diet includes both eggs and dairy products along with the plant products
Vegetarian Food Pyramid
People taking the vegetarian diet should follow the vegetarian food pyramid. As per the vegetable food pyramid, fatty and oily foods, salt and sweet foods should be taken in minimum quantity possible. Dairy products, seeds and nuts can be taken moderately with two to three servings a day. Intake of vegetables and fruits can be done as per the requirement and quite generously and can be taken upto 4-5 servings a day. Grain products, cereal and rice products can be taken as much as 10 servings a day for people following the vegetarian diet pattern.
Undoubtedly, Balanced vegetarian diet is the healthiest diet option that one can decide to take, but at the same time it has to be decided that any person opting for a vegetarian diet should go for a balanced vegetarian diet plan. It has also been observed that intake of vegetarian diet along with proper exercise regime can keep a person healthier. Healthy food habits and regular exercise is sure to keep one fit and enjoy a healthier life style.
